Oh JD...

[–]stormstar1 0 points1 point ago

A latte! I just got that!

[–]Tystero 19 points20 points ago

Chai tea.

My Indian-ness causes some mild agitation in my mind and soul every time I hear that phrase.

[–]FauxShizzle 8 points9 points ago

He loves the Tea tea, though!

[–]Esquired 3 points4 points ago

Chai (phonetically, at least) also means tea in Russian.

[–]brainsteww 0 points1 point ago

In Chinese and Japanese it's "cha" (Maybe Korean and Viet too, can't remember)

[–]lurking_bishop 0 points1 point ago

Also in Turkish if I'm not mistaken. I'd even go as far as to assume that the Russians adopted the word from there

€dit after a bit of digging in wikipedia: So, apparently, in one chinese dialect the drink was called "cha" and in another "te". I'm assuming that depending on which region the non-chinese folks visited first, they started saying either "Tea" or "Chai"

TIL

same here, i was wondering if in coffee shops in america it's used to mean a specific type of tea? maybe to differentiate from green tea?

[–]Zaev -3 points-2 points ago

'Chai' is used to mean specifically masala chai.

As a curious starbucks barista myself, how exactly did he/she screw it up? Chai's are pretty straight forward. Was it modified? That's all I can think of.

Not trying to paint you in a bad light at all for complaining about it so don't get me wrong (hell I'll say something if my drink is wrong at another store, which is especially fun since I can usually tell them exactly what they did wrong :P), but I hear a lot of stories about "so and so barista messed up so and so drink" and most of the time I'm just like "...how does one even mess that drink up enough for it to be noticeable?". Especially multiple times. Obviously they found a way I guess.

He gave me a Mocha latte or some crap like that on accident and I had to tell him it was wrong and that I had, in fact, ordered Chai. I then waited ten minutes and (respectfully) asked where my Chai was. He then decided that this was the best time to tell me they were out of Chai (rather than when I had ordered in the first place). He was able to pretty closely duplicate a Chai latte in the end by using a teabag, but it took much longer than it should have.

[–]ernie_dingo 6 points7 points ago

sounds like a stressed out hospitality worker went the extra mile and tried to make your drink despite the lack of resources and now you are being a little butt hurt about it.

[–]GoalieSwag[S] -2 points-1 points ago

If he had said "we don't have the Chai mix but I can make you some from a tea bag" or something to that effect as soon as I ordered, that would have been fine. The fact that it took literally about fifteen minutes before he even mentioned to me that they were out of Chai is what annoyed me.

[–]c_perezi 1 point2 points ago

Out of chai? That's embarrassing.

[–]ChuckIT82 -4 points-3 points ago

OP won't deliver, is my bet - former Starbucks Barista myself and i'm very curious myself.

[–]bookey23 4 points5 points ago

It sounds adorable.

[–]mheat 4 points5 points ago

Sounds like he screwed it up on purpose just so he could use that phrase.

[–]timothygruich 4 points5 points ago

When your order is complicated enough to get fucked up by anyone, even a minimum wage employee... chances are, you're the bad guy.

[–]GoalieSwag[S] 3 points4 points ago

It wasn't complicated... I said "Grande Chai Tea Latte." That's it.

[–]H_J_Farnsworth 3 points4 points ago

Quit being butthurt.

[–]FaultyTowerz 2 points3 points ago

Not a minimum-wager, but thanks for saying this. ...and for the OP; I've managed restaurants before, and no-one should be pissed about a miss-communication at this kind of establishment. Think of how many people they interact with. Think of how many different orders there are. Think about how green you were on your first couple of days/weeks at your first job. Just relax, and try to make your own drink everyone in a while to gain some perspective. Also, have an awesome tomorrow!

[–]RubixBoob 2 points3 points ago

Probably because you kept referring to 'him' or 'her' as "it".

[–]ronintetsuro 0 points1 point ago

You know everyone hates you, right?

[–]MadreDios -1 points0 points ago

Chance this actually happened: 5%

Reason for upvote: I liked the pun.

[–]balancedhighs -2 points-1 points ago

If you pull that face after I try my hardest to make your goddamned drink, next time I'm gonna charge you double.
