Ok aside from her size/crocs, am I the only one that thinks this is awesome?

EDIT: I've got nothing against big people, just tired of people not realizing how cool this device is because they're too fixated on her size. Children.

[–]TheManInsideMe 39 points40 points ago

As someone with a disability this is incredible. I've always wanted to go diving but wrote it off as something I'll never do until now.

[–]Boomer84 13 points14 points ago

As someone who has taught disabled divers I can assure you that you don't need that ridiculous and dangerous contraption to go diving.

Scuba diving is considered therapy for many disabilities and depending on your disability it is incredibly accessible for disabled people. Diving actually requires a very minimal amount of physical exertion. If you want some information send me a PM and I can let you know all the options available to you.

[–]ozuri 6 points7 points ago

I actually am specializing in teaching divers with severe physical disabilities. Many of my students are amputees or have other physical impairment that inhibits their movement on land.

If this is something you want to learn to do, it is possible for most people -- not all, but most.

[–][deleted] 58 points59 points ago

no, you're not alone at all! it's why i bothered looking at the comments- i wanted to find out wtf this is, how much it costs, if certification is necessary, and where they can be bought. I would be in this non-stop until i got eaten by a shark or some other cool undersea odyssey type shit happened.

[–]Cheese-Its_Christ 20 points21 points ago

I remember seeing these in Popular Mechanics probably 10 years ago. I though it was easily the coolest thing I had ever seen. I knew I couldn't afford to buy one, so I set out to build one myself. It turns out it is significantly harder to do than my teenage self thought it would be.

[–]chcampb 5 points6 points ago

They are not complicated at all. The way it works is basically a giant clear globe, fiberglassed to a seat with a handle and a turbine. The handle turns the turbine left and right for steering, but the fan doesn't move. There are no controls for the oxygen, it's basically just feeding a constant stream at expected usage into the helmet, and the excess air bubbles out the back (which is slightly higher than the front so as not to obscure the view).

The problem is, you aren't going to go anywhere fast. They are terribly slow. To imagine how slow, stand up, and put one foot directly in front of the other... once every 3 seconds. And that's if the currents don't push you backwards. They also have no pitch/roll controls so they have to be tethered to something.

[–]Cheese-Its_Christ 6 points7 points ago

Awesome, thanks for the info! Though...

They are not complicated at all.

My shitty 13 year old self would disagree.

[–]chcampb 3 points4 points ago

Your 13 year old self had not seen one, or he would agree :)

He may also have gotten himself killed. So maybe this is for the better :)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

lol, you got any pics of your effort? i wanna seeeeee

[–]Cheese-Its_Christ 18 points19 points ago

Unfortunately I don't, as I didn't get very far. From what I remember, the frame was pretty much old 2x4s we had in our garage. I'm pretty sure I had thought I could get away with throwing a fishbowl on top of it all. I'm not sure what I thought I could use as the propeller, probably an old fan or something. I was kind of an idiot.

[–]benreeper 13 points14 points ago

I was kind of an idiot.

No, you were kind of cool.

[–]Cheese-Its_Christ 11 points12 points ago

I'm fairly certain that at 13 years old, the two are very closely related.

[–]benreeper 9 points10 points ago

The magic of being an adolescent.

[–]tomBARCIK 4 points5 points ago

ive done it before! it was fun. i was on vacation in the dominican republic. no requirements. (maybe a height requirement but it isnt much if anything). and it was something like a $30 trip. i dont know if it is for personal use becuase the instructor pulls you down

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

thanks!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

yeah, i saw those, but it looks a cooler to just be chillin' upright like you're on a scooter-bike. thanks, though!

[–]black27696 2 points3 points ago

certification is not required which is why people use them. I've looked them up in the past, they are crazy expensive.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

thanks!

[–]LobaltSS 0 points1 point ago

I went on one of these in Cancun, they were called the B.O.B.

Actually, pretty cheap. And extremely fun

[–]black27696 0 points1 point ago

I meant to buy, which is what I assume he was asking.

[–]MadManuel -1 points0 points ago

If you're certified, you can dive almost anywhere down there for about $35-50 per two tank dive.. And actually be able to move around.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

[–]acog 6 points7 points ago

Here's the actual site. In actual English. That site you linked to is some abomination created via Google translate or something.

It's a nifty idea but if their site is any indication, they're not doing too well. The About Us page excitedly talks about early 2011 as being in the future.

[–]DrBix 1 point2 points ago

The woman's picture on their website is a F***LOAD better than the one in the OP's picture.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

weird, when i go to the site there's no translate or anything happen. it's all in english (though not much said). thanks for the alt link, though!

[–]toxictoastcraft 0 points1 point ago

"... without cumbersome gear or training." Riiiiiiiiiiiigggghhhhhttt.

[–]SirRosie 3 points4 points ago

"On effective commercial use: immersing on 20 mines on depth to 12 metres. For immersing are used: the crane, a platform, etc. (including - from yachts; drawing) see. The cost of one immersing practised in the countries where already AQUA STAR use for commercial immersings (excursion, tourists.) – 70-75 USD for 20 minutes. Superprofitability. 1000 % annual! A payback period at partial (!) loading: from three weeks till 2 months!"

Okay...

[–]darkpaladin 1 point2 points ago

12 meters and you can only look at stuff by sitting? Other than novelty I fail to see what this has over scuba.

[–]turbofast 2 points3 points ago

Do they rent scuba for tourists. I always thought we need to go through training and safety courses.

The scooter seems more like instant sit and go thing.

[–]Skyy-High 1 point2 points ago

Most big resorts will rush you to certification in a weekend or so. It's a crap job and you'll be a terrible diver, mocked and loathed by all the people who spent months on their classes as you screw up the environment in a host of creative ways...but you can do it.

Alternatively, there's SNUBA. No certification required, more freedom to move than this stupid scooter thing, and you're tethered to a boat so you're not going to go off and break something. It's a fine way to get introduced to spending a lot of time underwater...but really, nothing beats real SCUBA diving.

[–]carbonnanotube 0 points1 point ago

On a dive boat in Lake Huron I once saw what we call "Resort Divers" try to dive a 40m wreck in with a 4C bottom temp in a 5mm farmer johns. I have no idea why the operator let them go. We were actually with another charter tied off to them. The female made it to the bottom of the line and gave up, the man was down a little longer and came up shaking.

[–]Skyy-High 0 points1 point ago

Can't tell if diver operator was incredibly negligent or was trying to teach them a lesson...

For the uninitiated, "farmer johns" are a wetsuit that doesn't cover your shins or forearms (or even sometimes your whole arm). It's something you'd wear in the tropics. That man could've died from hypothermia if he stayed down much longer.

[–]carbonnanotube 0 points1 point ago

No actually, a farmer john is a 2 piece, well it is up here anyways.

[–]darkpaladin 0 points1 point ago

That's how I've always heard it. Coveralls style pants with a jacket over top.

[–]darkpaladin 0 points1 point ago

Did they at least have hoods?

[–]carbonnanotube 0 points1 point ago

Yes.

I have done the dive in a 2 piece 7mm. Still much better in my drysuit.

[–]I_ARE_A_DOG 0 points1 point ago

They do, in fact. I went to a dive shop on Catalina and they let me dive with no certification; it was a 1 on 1 dive with a guide. She took care of everything for me except breathing and equalizing the pressure in my nose/ears. Was hella fun, but also super expensive. something like 200 bucks for two hours :/. Totally worth it!

[–]carbonnanotube 0 points1 point ago

You could have your C-card for that much.

[–]darkpaladin 0 points1 point ago

Even with his C-card he'd still need to go out on a charter and rent his gear. I think that's around $100.

[–]highlandprincess 1 point2 points ago

I think it would be cool if you were wheelchair bound or something along those lines. I would much rather scuba dive but it gives them a chance to experience it too.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

HhhHahahahahahhahahahahahaha, awesome. we're gonna be rich, SirRosie! me and you! you and me! we're gonna make it afterallllllll

[–]xtcriott 5 points6 points ago

Me and a buddy did this a few years ago in the Caribbean. One of the coolest things I have ever done in my life. Hands down. Iirc there are only I think 20 or so companies that actually offer this, though it may have risen in number since then.

[–]braunshaver 4 points5 points ago

I feel that if I was gonna wear crocs, this is the situation where I would.

[–]OddDude55 2 points3 points ago

Dat water flow across your toes...

[–]Windows_98 2 points3 points ago

I drove one once. They make you follow a path and your ears pop and it was honestly really amazing.

[–]geyserpj 1 point2 points ago

I had a chance to do this on a cruise. I waited at port for 2 hours and only 5 others signed up. The dive was cancelled. Damn you Cozumel

[–]carbonnanotube 0 points1 point ago

The diving there is amazing. I have never been south, but my parents did 3 weeks in the Caribbean as their honeymoon diving, 1 week was on Coz. The best dives are drifts along the reef, you just hit a depth you like and relax as the current does all the moving for you.

[–]Spartanfred104 2 points3 points ago

did it in the Caribbean and had the worst time ever. had to wait 3 hours to do it for 15 minutes and during it I had a panic attack and had to bail out

[–]jacks392 0 points1 point ago

I also found this pretty interesting. Thank goodness there are still people out there that don't judge based on appearance. :)

[–]CapnMatt 0 points1 point ago

It's kind of disheartening that I immediately thought of it as a fat cart from Walmart rather than a cutting edge submersible

[–]WereDaWiteWimminAt 0 points1 point ago

You and your stupid american stereotypes

[–]mitis 54 points55 points ago

Or an option for the disabled? Or for people on vacation who don't swim well, due to their limited access to swimming?

Or for my lazy ass that realllly wants to justify the cost of owning one someday.

[–]plastiqmanb 5 points6 points ago

This is an excursion called the BOSS. I believe their website is BOSSusvi.com. I was on it and its a blast. Just the way your air is recirculated is magic. No respirators or anything. Just an underwater scooter.

[–]donutsalad 4 points5 points ago

I want one of those... Any source on what they are actually called.

[–]divine_metaphysics 5 points6 points ago

Everyone, look. She's overweight! These are actually really fun. You can go a lot deeper than with snorkeling gear and the air tank last for about 30 minutes. It's a perfect middle-of-the-road option for people who don't want to spend the money on a scuba certification.

[–]YourTokerFriend 4 points5 points ago

Oh my god give me one right now

[–]righteous4131 4 points5 points ago

I'm not gonna lie, this is pretty bitchin'

[–]catnik 6 points7 points ago

Upvote for tiny Nemo!

[–]Dyrty 49 points50 points ago

More like the humans from Wal-Mart go diving...

[–]goblinpiledriver 6 points7 points ago

Wal-Mart really went all out with their pet fish selection experience.

[–]jumpinjohnnycakes 12 points13 points ago

Im not even mad. That is a seriously cool idea.

[–]vinniep 1 point2 points ago

As a veteran diver, I think this is perfect for non-divers. Diving isn't something you can just do after a half hour group lesson. There are a lot of safety concerns, procedures, and physical training required to dive safely and enjoyably. This scooter eliminates many of those concerns, and should be a fantastic way for the average joe to experience the world that divers spend all that time and money to visit all the time.

[–]MadManuel 1 point2 points ago

With this setup do they need to equalize?

[–]vinniep 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but because they are breathing through their noses as well as mouth, it becomes a lot easier and something that can normally be accomplished by chewing gum during the dive. These scooter dives are also normally not very deep, both as a safety consideration and for practicality sake.

[–]Rozeline 83 points84 points ago

I fail to see how it's strange or funny when overweight people just do normal things. If this were a picture of a slim person riding this thing, nobody would think it's funny at all. I mean, wtf, are people so stupid as to not realize that overweight people are just people and do the same things everyone else does??? Oh look a fat person eating a burger! That's so fucking hilarious! Oh, there's a fat person on an escalator! Let's mock them for being lazy while ignoring those skinny people right behind them! It's ok to treat them like mindless animals, because fat people aren't real human beings like us lol!

[–]flagbearer223 72 points73 points ago

Because there was a popular movie in which animated fat people rode floating chairs around instead of walking. This is a non-animated fat person riding a floating chair instead of swimming. There are similarities in this that some people might find comical.

[–]Minderman 2 points3 points ago

:'(

[–]Bloodfeastisleman 5 points6 points ago

But she is also wearing crocs! How can you not mock that?! I bet she uses Bing, too.

[–]Rozeline 0 points1 point ago

Crocs are incredibly comfy, but ugly. I don't know how to feel about them. Fuck bing though. Aol too.

[–]sn5484 0 points1 point ago

Thank you, seriously thank you...

[–]gl77 0 points1 point ago

Welcome to Reddit.

[–]Howard_Beale -2 points-1 points ago

"If this were a picture of a slim person riding this thing, nobody would think it's funny at all."

Wanna bet?

[–]philosopher94 -4 points-3 points ago

Wow are you mad fat?

[–]MasticationMan 4 points5 points ago

I would ride that and I'm not obese.

[–]Guitarable 12 points13 points ago

Yeah, but would you ride the scooter?

[–]spliffandtea 1 point2 points ago

ayyy ooooo

[–]Assmar 5 points6 points ago

Just got a thing for them BBWs?

[–]Regular_Ghost 2 points3 points ago

I saw this one year I was vacationing to Florida. They advertised it as "ride bob!"

[–]chcampb 2 points3 points ago

I went on one of these on our honeymoon. My wife hadn't used SCUBA before, but I had, and neither of us had done this thing. So we gave it a shot.

In general, it felt very slow (ie, it couldn't beat the ambient currents), and I think the oxygen was a little off because I barely made it back to the surface with crazy nausea.

It was definitely fun though. Just not something I would do more than once in a very, very long while. I enjoyed SCUBA a lot more.

[–]249ba36000029bbe9749 2 points3 points ago

So what sort of safety mechanisms are on these things? I assume they are probably positively buoyant so if power goes out it will float to the surface? How long can someone breathe in the bubble without being replenished? How does it prevent someone from surfacing too quickly and getting the bends? Etc.

[–]Tdotwot 0 points1 point ago

I was wondering the same thing. Seeing as the application looks mostly tourist-y, the users, it seems, wouldn't be likely to have the kind of safety training they would get leaning to dive normally. It just looks really dangerous if something were to malfunction.

[–]DrBix 0 points1 point ago

I'd guess they don't let them go much deeper than like 15 or 20 feet max.

[–]249ba36000029bbe9749 0 points1 point ago

I looked around and the range is about 30 feet. Still even 20 feet is enough for bad things to potentially happen.

[–]DrBix 0 points1 point ago

I know. I once had my dive belt fall off when I was about 20ish feet down and rose to the surface like a bubble. The next four hours I spent in hell.

[–]ropepaelgen 3 points4 points ago

I've used this thing pictured. It was for a specific excursion (that I paid for specifically to use) I did on my honeymoon and it was awesome. It isn't just for fucking fat people. I'm actually underweight so fuck this fat people scooter shit.

I'd show pictures but I'd probably be made fun of just like this person in the above link.

[–]spliffandtea 0 points1 point ago

What's it called? where can I buy one? Have you considered weed as method for your weight gain?

[–]nirvanianlaughs 8 points9 points ago

Are those fucking crocs?

[–]Dynamiklol 6 points7 points ago

Crocs? Where?

[–]raeflower 1 point2 points ago

Woah, I didn't know crocs lived in the ocean!

[–]nirvanianlaughs 0 points1 point ago

Lame... So very very lame... But upboats for it!

[–]breadlobster 4 points5 points ago

Camo crocs at that...

[–]IBoldlySayTheObivous 28 points29 points ago

This lady is overweight.

[–]IBoldlySayTheObvious 14 points15 points ago

You spelled your own name wrong.

[–]crusaderofsin 7 points8 points ago

SO BOLD.

[–]DrBix 1 point2 points ago

Thanks Captain Obvious

Ear management is key to successful diving (this too, it would seem)

[–]mrjmf 1 point2 points ago

We have them here on St Thomas. Needless to say I see them advertised for the tourists and just wanna buy one for myself. One day.....one day....

[–]ghostiegirl 1 point2 points ago

This would be an awesome idea for disabled people. Like people who can't walk would otherwise probably never be able to dive without something like this.

[–]ScratchBomb 1 point2 points ago

That actually looks real unsafe to me. It seems like the head part could fill up so easily. am I wrong?

[–]Malikor 0 points1 point ago

yes you are wrong. Ever try submerging a glass up side down in a sink of water

[–]ScratchBomb 2 points3 points ago

i understand that concept. at the same time, the glass has to forced down in order to stay that way. I understand that the riders weight does that as well as the weight of the device. but what I'm getting at is user error. it just seems like someone could lose their bearings and maybe turn too much or something. then whammo water in the head bowl.

[–]opensandshuts 1 point2 points ago

It seems a little unsafe to me too. Like a little nose dive could fill it right up. Also, You'd have to worry about pressure if you sunk too far down.

[–]supermandy 1 point2 points ago

I love how you judge her by her weight while she's doing that and you are sitting on a website in your parent's basement eating cheetos and lamenting the sharp knees of supermodels...

[–]Striss 5 points6 points ago

Scooty Puff junior?

[–]MichaelJayDog 1 point2 points ago

Scooty Puff Junior sucks!!!

[–]Mixcoatl03 2 points3 points ago

Underwater moped.

[–]LobaltSS 0 points1 point ago

B.O.B actually

[–]Seamorepenis 2 points3 points ago

[–]zushiba 2 points3 points ago

We need a /r/fatpeopletryingtoenjoylife or simply /r/fatpeopledoingstuff to consolidate all these pictures of fat people doing things that only normal sized people should be allowed to do.

[–]tiffany43 8 points9 points ago

like living? i know what you mean! how dare they make us look at them! ugh!

[–]Rum_Pirate_SC 20 points21 points ago

Who says that there isn't fat hate on reddit!

[–]_Kita_ 16 points17 points ago

[–]bigjohn426 1 point2 points ago

Ahhhhhhhhhh, crocs! Kill it with fire lack of oxygen!

[–]batmanmilktruck 0 points1 point ago

what is that thing and where can i do this?

[–]CatrickSwayze 0 points1 point ago

Those mini subs are available at Stuart's Cove in Nassau, Bahamas. We bought a DVD of our underwater excursion, and I'm not going to lie, it was extremely fun. You may have also seen Stuart's on Rob and Big, when Rob goes swimming with sharks in the chainmail suit. They offer that as well.

[–]VirginWithAIDS 0 points1 point ago

Can I upgrade to the Scooty-Puff Jr. edition?

[–]ara_p 0 points1 point ago

Dem Crocks

[–]NikolaiDimitri 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure I saw this on 'Dragons' Den'.

[–]Jon-W 0 points1 point ago

Kendra?

[–]zomgitsanna13 0 points1 point ago

As a scuba diver, this makes me laugh.

[–]Logisch 0 points1 point ago

I would consider myself in shape, but why the hell would I go diving when I could diving in style. I wish they would have, pimp my diving scooter - would watch that.

[–]Taco_genius 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone else really want to try that?

[–]mvloddy 0 points1 point ago

And now we don't even have to swim!

[–]EDASBOOTS 0 points1 point ago

Does Walmart have an underwater isle now?

[–]BloodyMess 0 points1 point ago

Slightly different result here if you fall out of your chair.

[–]nerdycoty 0 points1 point ago

Sequel

[–]sonastyinc 0 points1 point ago

Seriously? The noise alone would scare away most marine animals.

[–]idunnothis 0 points1 point ago

i always want to ride those carts at the store but i'm not fat. what can i do?

[–]code_guerilla -5 points-4 points ago

I wonder how much extra weight is required to counteract her natural buoyancy?

[–]Howard_Beale 1 point2 points ago

Not too hard to figure out. Something is buoyant if it weighs less than the volume of water it displaces. So, the difference in her body volume in water minus her weight.

[–]Bigolbillyboy 0 points1 point ago

Haha I get it, because she's fat.

[–]maniac_man50 0 points1 point ago

Really? I don't even find this picture funny...

[–]imakehighways 0 points1 point ago

These people probably break all sorts of coral. boink

[–]dauz3 -3 points-2 points ago

So this is how lazy people go scuba diving?

[–]DrBix 3 points4 points ago

Don't confuse lazy with smart... or wealthy :).

[–][deleted] ago

I bet she's the same lazy woman that uses the motorized carts at Walmart. While all the other people are using flippers lol

[–]Howard_Beale 2 points3 points ago

I've only ever seen one person at Wal-mart using flippers.
