Obesity is a societal problem. Moreover, it is particularly prevalent in low income areas. This mean the answer can't be found in the level of the individual. It's kind of an idealistic idea that it could be, and that idea leads to the concept that large populations of underprivileged people are lazier than rich people. I find that particular idea ridiculous.

You're conflating two problems, here.

"Many people in our society are obese" is a social network problem, a cultural problem, and an economic problem.

"I, personally, am obese" is an individual problem which can be addressed on an individual level.

But "acceptance" is a bad idea whichever problem we are talking about, because it implies we should "accept" the status quo rather than attempt to fix the problem.

It is obvious that the Western World has undertaken a lot of change in the last one hundred years. This has completely changed our relation to food and exercise. Food became cheaper and more plentiful. However, the food available to the poor people was unhealthy, and food deserts appeared in urban and rural areas

This was by design, and it's horrific.

A lot of them have neither the time or the money to exercise, many are supporting families at the same time.

Inability to lose weight has also been linked to genetic features. People who are obese frequently carry "energy-thrifty genes" which are no longer useful in today's world. In addition, there is a disposition on the neurotransmitter level, in which consumption of food increases dopamine levels and is associated with obesity. Other biological factors are linked to obesity. Studies has also found that after people gain a significant amount of weight (and this can happen in early childhood), it can be nearly impossible to lose weight.

I'm not going to sit here and argue that anyone deliberate chooses to be fat, nor am I willing to argue that human beings are omnipotent and can mold reality just by willing it so.

But words like "inability" and "nearly impossible" confuse an obstacle with defeat.

In placing the responsibility on the shoulders of the obese or overweight, you rid yourself (I assume a relatively fit person) of any part in fixing the problem. You accept that you can do nothing.

To quote you, "'acceptance' is the worst thing of all, because it pretends there is no problem."

Fault, blame, responsibility and onus are four separate and distinct things.

Let us assume, for the sake of argument, that you are fat, which is the problem of obesity on a personal level. And that I live in a society where many people are fat, which is the problem of obesity on a societal level.

So we break it down:

You are fat:

• Fault: Partially yours. You are surrounded by food full of High Fructose Corn Syrup and sugar, and with little fiber. Zoning laws have prevented you from living within walking distance of anywhere you need to go. Social customs and advertising encourage you to eat more than you need to. Gluten finds its way into everything. And so on. But your dissatisfaction at being fat has not risen to the level where you make a realistic plan for overcoming these obstacles.

• Blame: Depends who you ask. Some people blame you for your condition, some people blame society. Some are in between.

• Responsibility: Mostly yours. People with the power to influence what goes into food, etc, have shown little inclination to help you. You're going to have to help yourself, or at take the initiative to seek help, and give someone incentive to help you.

• Onus: All you. Being fat is bad for you, not others. You are the one who is being hurt, so the problem is yours to solve.

Can you see the distinction here? Even if something isn't your fault, you're still the one with the problem, so you have to solve it. Situations like this occur all the time.

Let's do me. I live in a society full of fat people.

• Fault: Not mine. Nixon established corn subsidies before I was born. I have little to no political power to abolish zoning laws, or to diminish the popularity of nationally televised spectator sports, etc.

• Blame: Well, you seem to blame me. But I can't think of anyone else who does.

• Responsibility: I have a little bit. I can encourage people to exercise, and avoid fructose. In fact, I am doing so now, by saying that it's not okay to be fat, and people need to exercise. By posting links to Lustig's lectures. And so on.

• Onus: Not me. I'm not fat, and I have the power to stay thin. I am not in the primary group hurt by this problem, so I am not the person with primary motivation to solve it.

But on every level, I reject the idea of "fat acceptance". It's not okay to be fat. It's not okay to be a nation of fat people. And we need to fight against this problem both individually in our personal lives, and collectively in our society.
