ha i love being there when someone has this epiphany for the first time, it's like the realization for tripping. I have to say though, it's a lot of fun to think about.

Most people don't ever realize such things and they are well worth knowing.

Not sure how the "and all you are is a thought" is connected to the rest of this. Anyone care to explain it to me?

My understanding is that Anon relays the tale of how something as seemingly simple as your eye actually has the historical underpinning of billions of years ago - ultimately ending up to your eye through the unfolding of the universe.

The Universe then (ironically and beautifully) unfurled to have an organism that has become cognizant of its unfolding process, which is the human being.

And yet, at the end of the day, with all this history and magnificent we think of ourselves only as something so small as an isolated ego - a process of habitual thoughts. We've come to identify solely with the stream of wandering thoughts and forget about the Mind/Universe from which we came.

Silly, aren't we?

I believe the writer was getting at this: the universe is Consciousness - you are the universe experiencing itself. Thus, everything is cosmic thought-stuff.

The concept of you is no different than the concept of a character written down on a page. They both exist in abstract. The difference is that you are given mobility in the material world, but it's only to provide a means to an end; which scientifically is to evolve into another life form larger and more unified in their inclusion and completion. Humanity is only one stop on the journey of evolution and the concept of the individual you only exists as a byproduct of the ego, which only exists to keep you alive in the most survivalistic sense. The ego, your material body, the universal consciousness are all different.

The ego is the idea of you, the way you see it without any introspection whatsoever. Your every day waking life is the embodiment of your ego and your sense of self. It creates selfishness which is a bad thing, but it provides the gateway to empathy and subjectivity, which are good things. In the end, however, you and your subjective experience are just transient parts of the universe. They may be so fleeting as to not really matter, but your ego does provide a sense of attachment to yourself and the material world, so that you don't just shove off for the next experience.

My personal take on the universal consciousness, which I think we share in unconsciousness of death and sleeping, is just a montage of possible experiences. Experience itself is so non-material, it helps to almost empirically devalue the assumptions we make about the material world being "real." These are phenomena that transcend /r/psychonauts. I highly recommend watching Through The Wormhole. It's by far some of the most exploratory and scientific existentialism that only makes you feel warm and fuzzy about how synergistic the abstract science seems to coincide with a lot of psychonaut concepts about reality. It's amazing stuff. There are episodes dedicated to exploring the concept of a living universe, transfer of consciousness, the illusion of time, higher dimensionality, etc. It really could not be in the wheelhouse of this subreddit any more dead-center without losing mainstream credibility, which it oozes.

That's a realization you have to experience, not merely think.

I thought the writer fumbled the last line as well. I agree with the part right above that says you are the universe experiencing itself.

A human being could be described as a lot of things but just "a thought"? whose thought? that implies there's some third party. am I my own thoughts? I don't think that's right. No, I am energy. I am consciousness embodied. I am the universe.

I think you're right. Thought is almost too minimal when we're talking about The Great Big Thing!

First of all, I can't, for certain, say what the original writer meant. But I can speculate. So then, let me begin by saying this: You are. Go on, say it. "I Am." What was that? That, we have arbitrarily decided to call a "thought." (Anonymous seems to think) You are that. You are the awareness, thought, consciousness, being-ness, Am-ness, and any other word you choose to use in its place. You are awareness and/or (as Anonymous decided to call it) thought.

Rather than thinking of one's self as a/the body, one could try to find a more absolute statement such as: "I am the awareness of the body." It could be seen as a "higher self" if you will.

If we are just the universe experiencing itself then in reality there is really only one thing, and so the perception of ourselves as separate entities is just a mental image, a thought, and not reality.

I take it as the concept of "me" or "you" is just a thought.

technically the matter would make it here a lot slower than the light... our eyes are composed of stars longer dead than life has existed on earth.

Conversely, if you think of the universe the way "Anon" describes it here, you might conclude that each and every thought is really an effing enormously mind-blowing event.
