Such a peculiar guy. Humanity only got one Salvador Dali.

[–]thecritic06 29 points30 points ago

Peculiar, yes. Fascist, also yes. I love his paintings - his skills are indisputable. But the guy himself was a prick.

[–]icarusholmes 6 points7 points ago

Ooh, ooh, please tell me more.

[–]thecritic06 19 points20 points ago

Like does he have a car?

Dali frequently sent letters to fascist despot Francisco Franco applauding the death warrants Franco issued on political dissidents.

Non-relevant fact: Did you know that Dali had a pet ocelot called Babou? Sound familiar? Look at his little spots!

[–]fat_puppies 4 points5 points ago

As stated in his wiki, he wasn't a fascist perse.

Dalí insisted that surrealism could exist in an apolitical context and refused to explicitly denounce fascism.

[–]funkymessiah 8 points9 points ago

I agree, great artist. Piece of shit human being.

[–]icarusholmes 6 points7 points ago

Why? Seriously, I don't know why.

[–]Karmamechanic 3 points4 points ago

He actually followed his own, self produced eccentricities. His ride as an artist allowed a complete tour de farce as a human. He played it to the hilt and it may have been a calculated exaggeration, but...he applauded dictators and was a self professed coward.

[–]powderdd 6 points7 points ago

Ah, good. Sounds like he had more honesty about him than most of us do.

[–]Karmamechanic 0 points1 point ago

Unless you have morals..TRUE!!!

[–]powderdd 0 points1 point ago

Being self-honest and moral are independent

[–]Karmamechanic 0 points1 point ago

His life was out of control. It's not a moot point. He was extremely dishonest. Your first comment is out of touch.

"Ah, good. Sounds like he had more hones..."

No. It is not good. He was a great talent as a painter. He was talented as an artist. It ends there. He was a great fool and his life and successive depressions show this. Read the various biographies. I adore his work, but I'm not living in denial about his life. He was, until it was too late. Then he just suffered at his own hand ( and that of his wife, who was a bitch).

[–]powderdd 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for your input, it deeply moved me.

[–]Turntablemonkey 1 point2 points ago

You are a credit the the human language my good sir.

[–]PlzBuryMeWithIt 3 points4 points ago

HE WAS A GENIUS, motherfucker, A GENIUS!

[–]PlzBuryMeWithIt 10 points11 points ago

also, he was drugs.

[–]thatsmyaibo 1 point2 points ago

I thought that he wasn't really much of a drug user and painted more from different stages of his dreams.

[–]4twenty 10 points11 points ago

One of his most famous (or at least most attributed) quotes is, "I don't do drugs, I am drugs."

[–]meganeggroll 3 points4 points ago

I once read that he would fall asleep with a spoon in his hand over a plate so that when he dropped it when he feel asleep he would wake up and paint his dreams.

[–]Shadradson 2 points3 points ago

This is true. I can only imagine that he learned to severely hate the sound of spoon impacting plate.

[–]dittoalex 2 points3 points ago

It's how he maintained his figure.

[–]thatsmyaibo 0 points1 point ago

I believe that was a TIL on here not too long ago.

[–]PlzBuryMeWithIt 0 points1 point ago

I'm not entirely sure, and it doesn't bother me one bit, whether he would paint under the influence or by the recollection within his fascinating mind

[–]STJRedstorm 8 points9 points ago

My best friend's grandmother dated Dali for a few years in the 60's... I once asked her why they never worked out... she said, "He was a very peculiar fellow." Apparently, your choice of adjective is universal to this man.

[–]totallywhatever 7 points8 points ago

Is she alive? Could she do an AMA?

[–]STJRedstorm 3 points4 points ago

She is fairly senile at this point in her life, but I could ask if she would does some Q&A.

[–]framy 0 points1 point ago

Could you give me a heads up when it comes to that?

[–]DalinianXtacy 0 points1 point ago

Did Dali also have other affairs then too? I know Gala did, and apparently Dali encouraged it...so I guess he must have partook in it as well!

[–]pyxlatedIllustrator, Concept Artist 4 points5 points ago

I heard he once showed up to a party with a limousine full of cabbages.

[–]JohnnyGilbert 5 points6 points ago

What a WEIRDO!

[–]punoying 1 point2 points ago

[–]clovisdied 6 points7 points ago

Panda leg

[–]BerryPop 6 points7 points ago

As an artist he was amazing and unique. As a person.. well.. I guess you can't have it all

[–]aahxzen 3 points4 points ago

as a painter of surreal art, it makes perfect sense to choose such an oddly proportioned pet. Ant-eaters aren't exactly cuddly looking...

[–]GhostsofDogmaSurrealism 0 points1 point ago

He said in his book that he even made his choice of food according to its shape, not taste. Not really a surprise he'd choose a pet like an anteater.

Weirdest read I've ever had. Nothing like it.

[–]McRodo 21 points22 points ago

I love Dali and his art, but doesn't anyone else this is somewhat attention-whorish?

[–]Breadfaux 42 points43 points ago

I don't think you've ever owned an anteater. You must walk them constantly. Dali is clearly just being a good pet owner.

[–]framy 0 points1 point ago

Did you own one?

[–]tfaal 33 points34 points ago

He gets attention, we get to look at his cool pet anteater. Seems fair to me.

[–]JarasM 20 points21 points ago

You rarely become a world-renowned artist without at least some attention-whorish-ness. It's a job basically based on attention whoring.

[–]dasredditore 3 points4 points ago

He's gonna get attention regardless. He's a famous painter. So he might as well do it awesome.

[–]GoatseMcShitbungle 2 points3 points ago

I think this whole post is pretty worthless. A repost, containing no art, just irrelevant idolatry.

[–]xxmindtrickxx 6 points7 points ago

Agreed, I bet he thinks this makes him look cool...

[–]tfaal 49 points50 points ago

And it does.

[–]sgtoox 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, the guy wreaked of a drama-queenesque and attention whoring. Rather off-putting to be frank. Being eccentric is one thing, but blatantly being so purposefully eccentric is obnoxious.

[–]Bluemanze 1 point2 points ago

So were/are Andy Warhol, HR Giger, Banksy (in sort of an anti-whorish kind of way,) and Lady Gaga off the top of my head, along with many other popular artists. After the transition from impressionism to post-modernism, pop culture, surrealism, dadaism (sp?) the artists themselves became as public or more public than their works. Their lifestyles and mannerisms were a major selling point for their popularity.

[–]Arcon1337 3 points4 points ago

You're one reddit... Pretty much everyone who posts is an attention whore.

[–]CalaveraManny 1 point2 points ago

So OP is Dalí?

I loved you on Midnight in Paris!!

[–]10timesone 0 points1 point ago

No more attention whorish than any Kardashian, and wow I just compared Kim Kardashian to Dali.

[–]framy 0 points1 point ago

The attention whore and his ant whore.

[–]Havuk8888 2 points3 points ago

He was a true eccentric- who tend to be narcissistic and follow there own styles.....it's less about attention getting than meeting there own ideals.

[–]GhostsofDogmaSurrealism 2 points3 points ago

He really was. It makes me sad when people call him a fake attention whore... If he wants an anteater, he can have a fucking anteater, everything doesn't fucking revolve around you and how you see him, you know?

[–]dkarlberg 1 point2 points ago

Mother fucking badass.

[–]parallelogram_soup 1 point2 points ago

what is that liquid on the ground?

[–]thecoffee 2 points3 points ago

Water from the sky.

[–]Edgar_Allan_Rich 1 point2 points ago

Clearly that is an ant smoothie.

[–]parallelogram_soup 1 point2 points ago

oh you!

[–]lostmimic 0 points1 point ago

Dear Hipsters,

You are several decades late and have lost the game.

Sincerely,

The rest of us.

[–]danrick 3 points4 points ago

interesting I did not know he had a pet ant eater

[–]jasontimmur 1 point2 points ago

That time of the month again, huh?

[–]justinemelissa 0 points1 point ago

Pimp

[–]ImSofaKingWeToddit 0 points1 point ago

It looks like there are two heads on that anteater - surreal indeed!

[–]pyxlatedIllustrator, Concept Artist 0 points1 point ago

Just how does one care for a pet anteater, anyway?

[–]snoharm 4 points5 points ago

Ants, mostly.

[–]thecoffee 2 points3 points ago

[–]STJRedstorm 0 points1 point ago

Such a Boss

[–]turnitup69 0 points1 point ago

the dream of Christopher Columbus is my favorite painting of his

[–]messer 0 points1 point ago

This is definitely art.

[–]csar_dressingCeramics 0 points1 point ago

He died when he was 42, he looks pretty old in this photo.

[–]gelhardt 0 points1 point ago

I especially like the metalwork of the subway stop. I'm guessing it's one of Hector Guimard's?

[–]heyheylove_87 0 points1 point ago

I'm obsessed with anteaters. How did I not know he had one? They make excellent pets if you know what you're doing. Not so much this variety but the lesser anteater definitely.

[–]penelysseus 0 points1 point ago

This image circulates reddit all the time but never seems to get old. Shows how awesome Dali is

[–]teamhex -1 points0 points ago

What is that liquid on the ground? Pee?

[–]Artimoi -1 points0 points ago

Boss of not giving a fuck.

[–]SpoonHat -1 points0 points ago

There were obviously no fucks given that day.
