Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

This pic isn't in Russia, but in Ukraine.

[–]NeilsErikTheRedd 4 points5 points ago

Can anyone provide some context?

[–]Yonderlane 5 points6 points ago

For all of you looking for context.

[–]random39 3 points4 points ago

Long time lurker first time poster here. I think this is an important issue that has been avoided by the Western media and so I have decided to provide some context. The National Post article does a very poor job of providing real context for this issue. What it basically boils down to is oppression against Ukrainians and Ukraine. For more than 300 years what is present day Ukraine was under Russian influence. Over this period the various Russian governments, tsars, and elites did their utmost to 1) exploit Ukrainian land 2) Utilize the people for their own nefarious purposes 3) Destroy Ukrainian culture and 4) When the above did not go as planned, commit genocide. I will address these four main issues sequentially. 1) For centuries Russian administrations in their various forms have viewed Ukraine as Russian territory and have seen it as their right to exert political, economic, and cultural influence on these lands. This view, although grossly misguided, is still quite pervasive today. Some arguments utilized are that Ukraine is not a real country and that Ukrainians are not a real ethnic group http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1900838,00.html 2) Ukrainians were seen as “little” Russians who were there simply to propagate the “greatness” of Mother Russia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Russia#From_Little_Russia_to_Ukraine 3) Systematic attempts were made to eliminate the Ukrainian language and culture through repressive political policies, along with widespread Russification, and when those failed… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ems_Ukaz 4) Outright genocide was committed to limit Ukrainian independence and destroy any semblance of ethnicity http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor

With regard to your original inquiry regarding context please keep the following in mind. To Ukrainians (i.e. people who speak Ukrainian, are descendants of Ukrainian inhabitants, and follow Ukrainian traditions) this is not about limiting Russian or being in any way, shape or form against Russians or Russia. This is about putting an end to centuries of oppression. Imagine, for a moment, how the English would feel if German policies were responsible for the death of millions of English people followed by the settlement of German natives on English land with demands for wide spread use of the German language in England. This should give you some sense of context.

I’m very happy to see that people are interested in what is going on in Ukraine. Most people assume Ukrainians = Russians and don’t give matters like this a second thought.

Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union and would have been lumped in as part of "Soviet Russia" by Americans during the cold war. Though obviously it wasn't Russia.

It's called "advertising".

[–]tigerdactyl 5 points6 points ago

That should end well

[–]Jarthos1234 4 points5 points ago

seems like a good way to get shot.

[–]Brettg4215 8 points9 points ago

That guy has two right arms and hands.

[–]WaitJustOneSecond 0 points1 point ago

Nope - 2 different guys. Went down this road on one of the previous reposts. Look close - one guys shirt is slightly different color. Also one has a bigger right arm than the other. I think for the closer arm the person that belongs to it is out of the shot.

[–]Forthalord 0 points1 point ago

Maybe, but more than likely he's Dual-Wielding.

[–]Its_Frosty 2 points3 points ago

How is this any more ok than police macing the protestors? People are people...

[–]molrobocop 8 points9 points ago

In america, this would feel amazing. Well, until the guns came out and they opened fire.

[–]happywaffle 1 point2 points ago

Wait, what? Are the police/soldiers completely unarmed or something?

[–]iXRazor 0 points1 point ago

Not Unarmed just it's difficult to pull out a weapon whilst your eyes are on fire.

[–]happywaffle 1 point2 points ago

Difficult, but not impossible. It would be spectacularly stupid to pepper-spray an armed cop.

[–]liquidfist 2 points3 points ago

agreed. Its mostly standard training for officers to be pepper sprayed. Its also commonly trained that when threatened with a "less lethal" weapon, to respond with deadly force. The officer isnt just protecting him/herself, the officer is also protecting a deadly tool. If the officer is incapacitated by "less lethal" weapon, then the aggressor has access to a lethal weapon. which puts the public in danger.

Regarding the picture, its absurd. Definitely a bad idea to use pepper spray in such an enclosed area. Im sure the protesters were affected as well.

[–]EF08F67C-9ACD-49A2-B 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I would imagine the cop pulling out his gun, not able to see, just shooting in random directions on a crowded street. That'd go over well.

I did search pics to see if it had been posted, but obviously I didn't put the right titles in. Next time i'll do a more broader search.

[–]WaitJustOneSecond 3 points4 points ago

karmadecay.com - post the imgur link and it will find it for you.

[–]webchimp32 1 point2 points ago

Not always, I've tried using it to find pics that I've seen on Reddit before and it's not found them.

[–]Levitationist7 0 points1 point ago

Da, when the pepper-spray is produced by the glorious workers of the proletariat, the tables, they are turned.

[–]b_deam 0 points1 point ago

I hope that guy got his ass kicked shortly after.

[–]WreckerCrew 0 points1 point ago

That's a good way to get yourself shot.
