When I saw this on TV after it happened, I remember some reporter asked a local Iraqi guy if throwing a shoe was a significant or particular insult in their culture. He replied that he assumed that throwing a shoe was a significant insult in any culture.

I'm glad it didn't come down to this, but wouldn't you think security would've nailed that guy before he threw the second shoe? Does anybody know how this happened, and what happened to the "assailant" after the gif ends?

It's a pair of shoes, possibly his own. Security doesn't exactly expect that, otherwise they would have everyone take off their shoes. They were probably laughing too hard to actually stop the second one from being thrown.

As for what happened to the guy, according to Wikipedia, he was injured when captured, presumably tortured, sentenced to three years, got his sentence reduced to one year and was released after 9 months for good behavior. He now plans on running children's hospitals and the like. Which sounds oddly similar to some of the stuff bin Laden did after the Soviets left Afghanistan.

My dad saw that happen (he used to work for the President) and he said the guy who threw the shoes was taken out of the building and had the shit beat out of him. Honestly, he's probably dead now.

edit: okay, so obviously no one believes me, I'm not bullshitting but I could care less if people on the internet believe me since I don't really have any proof. Also, the "probably dead now" was just what my dad was when this happened however many years ago, I hadn't researched it at all to see if the guy lived or not.

It actually isn't, my dad was in the Air Force and was a flight attendant on Air Force One (the plane the President flies on) for 14 years and would go on the trips with them, which is why he saw it happen. I was just trying to share some information that was relevant to the gif, I could care less if someone on the internet believe me.
