This reminds me of an old fighter-pilot tip: if the missile doesn't appear to be moving, that means it's heading directly toward you.

[–]POSTS_GIFS 171 points172 points ago

[–]WorstTypeOfScum 56 points57 points ago

Don't let the tips touch!

[–]Bloodfeastisleman 12 points13 points ago

It's a good thing DATA DADT was revoked or they would have been discharged.

Edit: DATA? I have no idea.

[–]anthereddit 7 points8 points ago

You mean DADT?

[–]Bloodfeastisleman 2 points3 points ago

Perhaps my most confusing typo ever

[–]Kryhavok 6 points7 points ago

Didn't ask, told anway.

[–]PizzaGood 2 points3 points ago

Don't Ask, Tell All.

[–]Pregnenolone 1 point2 points ago

Don't ask; tell all.

[–]khag 1 point2 points ago

Did you mean to say "DADT was repealed" ?

[–]im_a_zombie 1 point2 points ago

not even for a second?

[–]EmperorSofa 12 points13 points ago

If I remember correctly those bombs wont be armed until they are dropped from the jet. Even if the dudes were to fuck up and drop them it wouldn't go off.

[–]kuranuk 29 points30 points ago

…you do realize this was from the movie Hot Shots, right?

[–]EmperorSofa 13 points14 points ago

I didn't realize it from the story. I'm just sprinkling around some information.

I remember being a little kid and watching Loony Toons cartoons and I would see characters drink nitroglycerin and spit bombs, or gremlins hit the tips of bombs with little hammers.

I ended up going to the library, this was before I had a dial-up connection. And I ended up looking up how bombs are made and the way they arm them. The memory isn't exact but I just remember the idea that until they go on the plane they are hunks of metal unless you expose them to a fire or something.

I think the librarian still thinks I'm a little terrorist or something.

[–]stupidly_intelligent 10 points11 points ago

Another clue would be the fact that those can't be carried around on your shoulder.

[–]EmperorSofa 7 points8 points ago

Well shit man it's late and i've had a long day at work. I'm barely sparring and processing power to this i'm no eagle eye right now.

[–]stupidly_intelligent 7 points8 points ago

lol, no worries dude. Hope you have a better day tomorrow.

[–]stinky_fudge 2 points3 points ago

Wow. Good on you for not being a complete douche like most Redditors.

[–]MajorVictory 1 point2 points ago

Now I want to see this movie. brb, torrenting it.

[–]unitarder 28 points29 points ago

If the missile doesn't appear to be moving...DO A BARREL ROLL!

[–]daschande 8 points9 points ago

Press Z or R twice?

[–]Hobbes4247791 3 points4 points ago

Proper missile StarFox quote:

"Shoot 'em down, we're being marked!"

Followed shortly by Slippy screaming, 'cuz I'm always too busy laughing at the carrot missiles to aim properly.

[–]SuperfluousMoniker 2 points3 points ago

Correct. Barrel rolls reflect normal fire but you have to shoot down missiles to avoid taking damage.

[–]inkrat 4 points5 points ago

It's interesting how the ball doesn't appear to grow much bigger even when it's headed directly towards "you" until the very last moment when it'd be presumably too late to even duck. I wonder if the reaction time would be even shorter given the distance (and speed to make up for it) for a missile.

[–]LiquorballSandwich 10 points11 points ago

Having 2 eyes goes a long way to aid depth perception in this situation

[–]Electrorocket 1 point2 points ago

Good thing Martok never took up baseball.

[–]Granite-M 1 point2 points ago

Martok would've taken a baseball to the head like a champ, then defeated the man responsible in honorable combat, drunk a gallon of blood wine, and finished the game.

[–]NotaMethAddict 11 points12 points ago

If the missile doesn't appear to be moving, get out of the way!

[–]veryoriginal78 7 points8 points ago

Every single post I click on, you're there... Every single one...

[–]unicorn_zombie 9 points10 points ago

I was thinking about that earlier today actually. Coincidentally, I then went and watched Breaking Bad.

[–]Ceejae 3 points4 points ago

What if it's not moving because you haven't launched it yet?

[–]Marshmelow6 8 points9 points ago

If we're still talking about missiles that means the plane is coming right at you.

[–]joshromea 109 points110 points ago

anyone got a link for the actual video of this?

[–]ddn4t 74 points75 points ago

[–]-SD- 4 points5 points ago

Perfect Linkage

[–]coheedcollapse 5 points6 points ago

Have no idea how this is so far down. I'll take a video over a gif any day. Especially a gif so small.

[–]squee777 3 points4 points ago

Give it time. It was only posted 25 minutes ago.

Sports: Now In 3D

[–]NotaMethAddict 90 points91 points ago

If only life was in 3D like that, it'd be so cool.

[–]RNRSaturday 42 points43 points ago

You just need the right glasses.

[–]reddit-ulous 16 points17 points ago

Nice try Google Glasses marketing manager.

[–]pencilbagger 16 points17 points ago

After a 3D movie, my friend put his glasses on and turns to his girlfriend and says "wow, everything looks 3D!" She replied with "really? let me see." We all had a good laugh.

[–]Barbarus623 5 points6 points ago

Semi-related, but I just felt the need to share. I went to see a movie with a bunch of friends the other night and they had oversold the showing. It was a 9:40 showing and the next one was for 10:10. After exiting the theater, we were discussing how we should exchange out our tickets for the next show. I straight up asked "Well, When's the 10:10 showing?"

[–]nathris[!] 130 points131 points ago

[–]unicorn_zombie 19 points20 points ago

Haha what!!! What lead to that face? Anyone know?

[–]SirDigbyChicknCeasar 12 points13 points ago

He is probably getting checked into the boards right in front of that camera.

[–]PresidentJonStewart 4 points5 points ago

Bingo.

[–]unicorn_zombie 1 point2 points ago

Makes sense!

[–]BigKahunaBurgers 57 points58 points ago

Skating into a camera would be my best guess.

[–]BZ-B 12 points13 points ago

Pretty sure he just got pushed into the glass by another player.

[–]unicorn_zombie 10 points11 points ago

Maybe.. But usually the video cameras are totally behind the glass, aren't they? I think only the photo cameras can get their lenses through in those little holes in the glass. That's a pretty good guess though. I'm really curious!

[–]JayPetey 14 points15 points ago

I would think skating into glass would also yield the same results.

[–]unicorn_zombie 5 points6 points ago

And also make this way more funny if he skated into the glass totally on his own. It'd be just like playing NHL 12!

[–]ENKC 3 points4 points ago

Erm, what's not to get here? The camera was filming him through the boards.

[–]unicorn_zombie 7 points8 points ago

Exactly! Through the glass. I don't think he made contact with the camera, which is my understanding of the above comment. Meh. Whatever. Funny face. I lol'd

[–]bliq 1 point2 points ago

It's the guy that goes down in the beginning of the clip. You can tell from the angle of the camera that it is mounted right above the board, where the glass begins. The guy is on his knees, after regaining balance from being spun from the fall, and hits the boards on his knees and goes down (most likely from pain).

[–]Skinny128 1 point2 points ago

He is the player sliding along the ice at the beginning (the one that tripped the Red Wings player).
Hitting the boards at that speed is probably what made him cringe.

[–]That_Fat_Black_Guy 1 point2 points ago

Carlo! Go Blues!

[–]Me_Yorksta 34 points35 points ago

Yes we all know the Rangers can't hit the FUCKING NET!

[–]inkrat 7 points8 points ago

One hell of a shot considering the size of that lens.

[–]KizzieMage 22 points23 points ago

I flinch every time...

[–]svsvsvs 56 points57 points ago

Lyk dis if u flinch evry tim.

[–]PigDog4 24 points25 points ago

EVERTIM!!!!!!!!! IT'S FUCKING EVERTIM!!!!!!!!!

If you're going to beat the everloving shit out of a dead horse until it is reduced to a quivering, pulpy splotch of its former self, you can at least have the decency to beat the correct horse.

[–]firedroplet 5 points6 points ago

This also kills the camera.

[–]Extraterresticals 150 points151 points ago

They should stop putting the camera in that spot, he hits the ball there every time!

[–]NotaMethAddict 89 points90 points ago

They've broken like 37 cameras already! How long does this video last?

[–]someguy945 24 points25 points ago

Have you figured out how to get the sound to work on yours yet? I've been playing with my speakers and volume controls for an hour now.

[–]Kllez 14 points15 points ago

Any idea how to pause it? I have to pee but I don't want to risk missing the time he'll hit it correctly. I've been watching for a while and don't want to watch it all over again.

[–]someguy945 12 points13 points ago

Your Escape key pauses it, F5 resumes

[–]Tendie 8 points9 points ago

HOLY SHIT

[–]someguy945 1 point2 points ago

didn't expect it to work? :)

[–]Two_Oceans_Eleven 1 point2 points ago

On Mac with Safari, holding Esc pauses and letting go resumes. Thanks for teaching me this.

[–]i_cry_evrytim_ 25 points26 points ago

Man, baseball players these days sure are consistent!

[–]dajuice21122 5 points6 points ago

Actually they keep (relatively cheap) glass clear filters on the front of these lenses because they can cost upwards of $75k. You just saw a $500-$1500 piece of glass break.

[–]Ellington 62 points63 points ago

I have to admit, I flinched like a spaz and almost dropped my laptop when it hit.

[–]am02773 57 points58 points ago

I haven't heard someone use the word spaz since middle-school.

[–]RNRSaturday 16 points17 points ago

Ellington is in grade school.

[–]Ellington 7 points8 points ago

Well, you caught me. I'll go back to homestarrunner.com now. (Grade schoolers still like that, right?)

[–]andreylosev 5 points6 points ago

How can anyone not like it?

[–]Ellington 1 point2 points ago

Yes! I can still play Peasants Quest!

[–]mazterlith 1 point2 points ago

Well maybe you should check out Space Pirates And Zombies then.

[–]cheebromeej 24 points25 points ago

I was there! This is Wil Myers at the MLB Futures game in Kansas City.

[–]Quantum314 4 points5 points ago

He better get called up soon. He's going to be a beast!

[–]Dino168 28 points29 points ago

Now imagine that in HD... Or better yet 3D!

[–]Brak710 53 points54 points ago

It would have missed both cameras if it was 3D. Would have been an awesome video though.

[–]PatrickRand 2 points3 points ago

I would have thought my TV broke.

[–]Kelfox 20 points21 points ago

It had to happen eventually.

[–]YouListening 40 points41 points ago

Think about Multiverse Theory. There is one universe where that's the only thing that happens.

[–]Dino168 22 points23 points ago

That's a lot of broken camera lenses

[–]YouListening 13 points14 points ago

There's an infinite number of universes where that's the only thing that happens and there's no such thing as cameras.

[–]vegetablesurprise 11 points12 points ago

And there is a special universe where I am the ball that is heading toward the camera while I pleasure myself.

[–]Dead_NOTsleeping 11 points12 points ago

I think that's this universe.

[–]Crim91 5 points6 points ago

OUR UNIVERSE IS BEST UNIVERSE.

[–]Jesus_The_Raptor 2 points3 points ago

What about this time? What if this was the only time that they actually hit the ball into the field in that universe?

[–]CEOofEarthMITTROMNEY 1 point2 points ago

That is not the multiverse theory

[–]butwhyohwhy 4 points5 points ago

I like how the EPSN logo flashes at the end (or beginning?..) making it a perfect loop.

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 47 points48 points ago

I really hope that's a freestanding camera, and a cameraman didn't just get nailed in the eye.

[–]MalcolmY 120 points121 points ago

Well it obviously hit the lens.

[–]darkneo86 63 points64 points ago

Which is usually connected to an eye?

[–]MalcolmY 40 points41 points ago

Well, no. There's a whole camera body from the camera lens to the guy's eye operating it. If there was a guy.

[–]darkneo86 39 points40 points ago

I would figure the force of the ball hitting would perhaps project the camera body into the camera mans face, if he didn't react fast enough. If there was a man.

[–]Ausgeflippt 56 points57 points ago

Those cameras weigh like 80 pounds and are on a big ass monopod. They're not going anywhere.

The camera guys are often looking on a screen and not through a viewfinder, as well.

[–]darkneo86 9 points10 points ago

Good to know. That does make sense, actually!

[–]Eviltechie 12 points13 points ago

Tripod. And they wouldn't be using a viewfinder anyway.

[–]Ausgeflippt 0 points1 point ago

No, not a tripod.

They're on a monopod bolted into the ground. There aren't many tripods that have wide and strong enough legs to hold a camera that big and heavy.

[–]Eviltechie 14 points15 points ago

Tripod [1] [2] [3]

[–]Asassinsneed 4 points5 points ago

Win.

[–]MrGoodbytes 11 points12 points ago

Rarely are cameras up to the operators eye. They view it through a screen. You can see it at the top, aimed down to where the operate would be sitting.

[–]rctsolid 8 points9 points ago

Nope. Those cameras are like artillery guns. He or she wouldn't have felt a thing.

[–]Extraterresticals 3 points4 points ago

If that happened, wouldn't the camera have, I don't know, moved a little more after being hit? The thing just bobbed up and down a bit.

[–]peggs82 9 points10 points ago

Nah...not at all actually...

The long lenses themselves weigh anywhere from 45-65 pounds by themselves. They attach to cameras that weigh roughly the same. The camera/lens sit on a panhead that weights about 60 pounds...and that all sits on heavy duty "sticks" (tripods) that weight about 45-50 pounds.

This stuff is heavy....and expensive too. A long lens (86x or 100x) can run anywhere in the $100k-$250k range. Obviously they would have to replace the front element on this, but its not necessarily totaled.

They also get broken quite often.

note - I work in sports broadcast television - with these cameras every day

[–]TheGasMoney 7 points8 points ago

This is usually the type of camera ESPN uses, meaning the operator was probably okay.

[–]Hack0201 4 points5 points ago

they have monitors on almost all professional cameras, they're not looking through a lens. The only possible injury was to the cameramans pride after he shat himself.

[–]snackies 2 points3 points ago

its a freestanding camera, at ever major and minor league baseball field they have big giant nets directly behind the pitcher for this purpose (if its a foul going directly behind the hitter, its probably still going 70 mph or so where as if he chunks most of it it will be popped up more and slower).

anyway, they don't let people back there they just have cameras on cables in that area.

[–]A19M98 2 points3 points ago

As someone who was physically at the futures game, yes that hit the camera behind the backstop that was mechancially controlled and was a on stick...

[–]THEESCHASKETCH 7 points8 points ago

R.I.P 3D tv owners

[–]Lonely_Duckling 5 points6 points ago

I flinched...

[–]Gaaabbers 11 points12 points ago

this was literally posted two days ago.

[–]kiwimonster21 2 points3 points ago

I've never flinched from a gif before. Good job.

[–]SoldMySoulToReddit 7 points8 points ago

REDDIT, Why the fuck is another repost on the front page? SERIOUSLY?

[–]i_cry_evrytim_ 15 points16 points ago

Wasn't this on the front page like 48 hours ago? I'm not sure why I'm surprised...this is reddit.

[–]Prplcheez 7 points8 points ago

I usually don't mind reposts too much, but THIS WAS ON THE FUCKING FRONT PAGE YESTERDAY.

[–]monsda 4 points5 points ago

I haven't seen this before.

[–]kjBALLAR 3 points4 points ago

Dude, what are those odds...

[–]brewmeister58 3 points4 points ago

Pretty damned good considering how many attempts at bat there are.

[–]delivereddit 5 points6 points ago

Are you serious. I saw this only last week. I don't know what's worse, the goddamn repost or the morons upvoting it. Fucking Reddit.

[–]B0RAT 20 points21 points ago

BOOOOO REPOST

[–]snogs 6 points7 points ago

Seriously, this is 3rd time I've seen this in the last few days.

[–]badideagenes 14 points15 points ago

It was just posted like two days ago too. I'd like to think that we can go a week without seeing it posted again.

[–]NoAirBanding 0 points1 point ago

Well sorry Mr. I've Seen Everything on Reddit, I'm upvotting this anyway.

[–]TheBoogieman67 1 point2 points ago

is it bad that i tried dodging the ball as it was coming towards the screen?

[–]runonandonandonanon 2 points3 points ago

That depends, did it hit you?

[–]Froggy_hop 1 point2 points ago

What's that kind of cloudy black fog that rolls into the corner of the broken lens at the very end there?

[–]oblimo_2K12 1 point2 points ago

Elemental Evil

[–]lolo_2000 1 point2 points ago

This cant happen in 3D. You would need two balls to hit both cameras doesnt make sense if it hits only one

[–]DigiornoBane 1 point2 points ago

Fist time I saw this on ESPN I wasn't expecting it all and flinched out of the way

[–]BoobAss 1 point2 points ago

What was worth more, the camera or the shot?

[–]unitarder 1 point2 points ago

The ball hit the camera so hard it turned into ESPN.

[–]nathanthesniper 1 point2 points ago

Did anyone else have the reflex to move their head?

[–]Ryans93 1 point2 points ago

Did anyone else jump?

[–]TomHanks12 1 point2 points ago

Homer Royals fan here! Go Wil Myers, wooh. Futures Game at Kauffman Stadium. Great Day!

[–]NealHatesMath 1 point2 points ago

Not only is this in the wrong subreddit, it was reposted FROM THE CORRECT SUBREDDIT (/r/gifs I believe.)

[–]piratazephyri 1 point2 points ago

"Makes me flinch every time" was the title when this was posted less than a week ago. Come on!

[–]ChefMcGruff 1 point2 points ago

Did anyone else flinch?

[–]paulreddit 1 point2 points ago

THIS IS NOT FUNNY

[–]Quietbetrayal 1 point2 points ago

[–]hanzibonzi 7 points8 points ago

repost...anybody?

[–]bunglejerry 2 points3 points ago

I can watch that over and over 100 times and still find it fascinating.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Repost 17,000 in the last 48 hours. Congrats.

[–]CloseEnough23 3 points4 points ago

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this posted fairly recently?

[–]d1al96 1 point2 points ago

I wondered why the ball was getting bigger ... then it hit me

[–]will60137 0 points1 point ago

I think it just might be the 13 year former catcher in me, but I ducked hard at that, then laughed it off, then felt ashamed.

[–]geezerpleazer 0 points1 point ago

I watched this game!

[–]ThEgg 0 points1 point ago

This must have been fun in ESPN 3D.

[–]browntown87 0 points1 point ago

I imagine that isn't what he was aiming for.

[–]jayhawk73 0 points1 point ago

I was sitting right by this when it happened. It was a mini cam on a boom mount right behind home plate. The filter was destroyed but the lens itself may have survived.

[–]sakredseven 0 points1 point ago

i blinked and flinched when the ball hit the camera

[–]Deathwish1909 0 points1 point ago

Dinkleberg..

[–]DrAstronaut 0 points1 point ago

does anyone else know any links to videos like this? I can't be the only one mesmerized by shots like this

[–]4realthistime 0 points1 point ago

Probably the most exciting thing in baseball since johnson hit that bird...

[–]ThatEricYouUsedToKno 0 points1 point ago

I flinched.

[–]julius1768 0 points1 point ago

I watched this way too many times.

[–]GuessWho_O 0 points1 point ago

flinch

[–]PygmalionJones 0 points1 point ago

How much do these cameras cost?

[–]danielfowler 0 points1 point ago

Close your eyes and point your finger at your forehead.

...that's the sensation this GIF has cursed me with for the immediate future.

[–]Marshmelow6 0 points1 point ago

This is what I want to see at IMAX theaters.

[–]AtavistArise 0 points1 point ago

Just The Tip...

[–]Impulser 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one, though out his childhood of watching sports, waited for this to happen?

[–]SIThereAndThere 0 points1 point ago

FINALLY

[–]Electrorocket 0 points1 point ago

Did Wil Myers have to pay for the camera?

[–]BLATANTLY_UNFUNNY 0 points1 point ago

perfect aim would lead to a homerun.

[–]SirDigbyChicknCeasar 0 points1 point ago

Can anyone explain a couple things for me? What causes that discoloration/weird imaging in the main portion of the screen after the hit and also, how does it keep recording in the top left corner after all that damage? If necessary explain like I am a five year old as I really know nothing about camera technology.

[–]Grambling12 0 points1 point ago

Me and my brother were at this game about 6 rows directly back from the camera. It was awesome everyone went crazy in the stadium after. Will Meyers got a standing ovation.

[–]oddjackbourne 0 points1 point ago

I can honestly say this nearly happened to me once when I was taking a couple of pictures directly behind home base at a high school baseball game, but thankfully a chain-link fence stopped the ball before it had a chance to smash into my face. Needless to say, it scared the shit out of me.

[–]Elquinis 0 points1 point ago

That may be one of the most expensive hits I've ever seen.

[–]batmansunclecharles 0 points1 point ago

I fucking flinched...

[–]Koaxke 0 points1 point ago

thats what we call 3D!!!!! xD

[–]cgowsell 0 points1 point ago

First time i watched this i kind of jolted when the ball got close. Very impressive

[–]PantheraAzandica 0 points1 point ago

Does anybody else get a strange sensation in their head above the eye when the ball is headed straight for the camera? I get the same feeling when my face/head is close to a sharp table corner or near collision with anything...

[–]drewniverse 0 points1 point ago

Air English: When a pool ball comes off the air-hockey table.

[–]DrHawk144 0 points1 point ago

Kauffman Stadium!! Shout out to KC Redditors!

[–]flores1171 0 points1 point ago

3D Gold!!

[–]Lateralus24 0 points1 point ago

That actually scared me for a second.

[–]bw5550 0 points1 point ago

I actually saw this happen live! It was nuts. They showed it on the giant crown big screen and the entire crowd gasped when they saw that view of it.

[–]nixle 0 points1 point ago

Just dropped my phone :) lol

[–]Cantmakemymind 0 points1 point ago

If I watched that in 3-D, there would be a strong chance I would be shiting bricks.

[–]henaye_cochone 0 points1 point ago

My thoughts while watching this .gif:

"-Rreads title and clicks- Lol, it's going to hit him in the nuts. Watch."

-thwak-

"...why is the ball getting bigger? OH FUCK."

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I was leaning towards the screen because the image was small.. I had a bad time..

[–]Markymark36 0 points1 point ago

I'm shocked there's not some short of protection...

[–]A_British_Gentleman 0 points1 point ago

That really made me flinch.

[–]UNKNOWN4825 0 points1 point ago

For some reason I flinched when the ball hit the camera..

[–]ComeSpitter 0 points1 point ago

every one of you flinched! don't lie

[–]PaulofdutyLikeaboss 0 points1 point ago

downvote for repost

[–]randomnormalguy 0 points1 point ago

Is it bad that I still flinched at that?

[–]Yellow_DF 0 points1 point ago

I actually dodged when the animation plays.

[–]TigerWylde 0 points1 point ago

dafuq makes you flinch at a tiny little gif of a ball?

[–]doctor0 0 points1 point ago

I jumped.

[–]bedhead_numbah3 0 points1 point ago

Wasn't there a joke about a guy looking at a little line in the air and it turned out to be a frisbee flying right at him and he got hit in the eye? Someone tell me that joke please.

[–]HaveALooksy 0 points1 point ago

That once happened when I was playing RBI Baseball on Nintendo. Only happened once, never saw it happen again.
