This is so true. But "Thom"?

[–]JANichols89 1 point2 points ago

He knew him personally. Only his close friends called him Thom.

I love Thomas Paine. The Age of Reason is one of my favourite books.

Every time I see this quote I think of the ACLS pathway (The algorithm used during resuscitation, where drugs are administered to someone who is 'dead) It doesn't work all the time, but occasionally it does

Tom Paine is the fucking man.

[–]spitandimage 0 points1 point ago

"TO argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose PHILOSOPHY consists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the dead, or endeavoring to convert an atheist by scripture." What can we all draw from the context of a man whos life was ruined by the rumor that he was atheist?

All I can think of is zombies.

T-Paine

I'm related to him. Pretty sweeeet.

knowing who T-Paine is here is important. In the book the Age of Reason he punches holes in a few diferent religions. He was ruined on a professional level by a man who had never read the book and smeared him on the grounds of him being atheist. He wasn't though he was a deist. This just goes to show the intolerance towards atheists in the 1700s. But again he was a deist. and just so you know when pressed Richard Dawkins said "IF there is a God then it must be a deistic God. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUe0_4rdj0U I'm not going to tell you where but it is in there and if you haven't seen this yet Dawkins and Krauss make a pretty badass team.

I always see shit given when people quote American founders (or early patriots) out of context to give support to religion. This quote may be true but I do not know and would be silly to up-vote and perpetuate what may be a wrong picture of history that just so happens to line up with the views of the denizens of this subreddit.

It would be great to have a rule that any quote posted on r/atheism must be backed up by a source or deleted. It would cut through a lot of the crap about misrepresentation that is way to often the case.

What does this have to do with religion or atheism while this statement can be applied to both sides it can also be applied to a number of things but since you brought it up it would make sends that this statement is pro christian for most of our founding fathers were even Ben Franklin who was considered to be the farther away from christianity than any of the other founding fathers made a speach arguing to keep daily prayer in congress

Not really going to do a whole lot of extrapolating here because I thought it was unnecessary but:

It was posted in the atheism subreddit, the title indicates that it is 'words of wisdom'. The people who browse this subreddit are expected to see what he is saying as wise with regards to atheism. 'Reason' is overall perceived to be one of the main arguments in the atheist arsenal. Comparing a dead person to a person who is unable to argue logically (the fundamentalist) is not that far a stretch when speaking hyperbole.

Any quote, when taken out of context, can usually be stretched to imply many different things, especially when the intended audience is primed to react in a certain way. I was merely suggesting that because of the fact that a source establishing context is important when quoting anyone it would be nice to see this reflected in a group which presumably prides itself in being well-reasoned.
