Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_2aX-784sw

Police dash cam of Meteor over Edmonton, Canada.

Filmed about 5:30pm Thursday November 20th 2008

I remember driving home that night and seeing the flash, but I had no idea what it was. I thought maybe I just stroked out for an instant, but once I got home it was all over the news. It was pretty cool, like someone flicked the sun back on for an instant.

IIRC it actually landed in a field somewhere in Saskatchewan near the Alberta border.

[–]bennyandthejets60 9 points10 points ago

My family and I were on highway 7 heading home and it looked like it had landed only 4 or 5 clicks away. Our estimate was horribly wrong when we heard where it landed.

[–]lordlicorice 5 points6 points ago

I think you spell it "klick."

[–]RJSizzle 5 points6 points ago

If by "you" you mean Canadian, the term was actually started by the US Military. I guess we just stole it.

[–]Csknight53 7 points8 points ago

That's impossible. The Canadians are too nice to steal. They most likely asked permission.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

We asked each other, agreed it would be fine and then robbed everyone blind.

[–]bennyandthejets60 2 points3 points ago

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle you are correct.

[–]Ceejae 2 points3 points ago

Did it leave a large crater? Do you know how big the meteor was on impact?

[–]fubes2000 2 points3 points ago

The meteorite was not very big at all, IIRC. Maybe about fist sized? About the size of a chihuahua's head?

The bright flash you see is most of the mass burning off. The crater was similarly small since it was difficult to find in the wide, flat, open expanse of Saskatchewan. [think Iowa, with wheat instead of corn]

[–]jhc1415 2 points3 points ago

That is really dark for 5:30. Is Edmonton that far north?

[–]Seanothan 16 points17 points ago

Welcome to Canada from November to February.

[–]choddos 3 points4 points ago

At least we don't live in Inuvik and experience the 6 month day period and the 6 MONTHS OF PERPETUAL DARKNESS.

[–]Take42 2 points3 points ago

I'm just in WA, but this is in Winter, and even here when it's mid winter it starts to get dark around 3pm.

[–]german80 0 points1 point ago

Dark around 4pm in the winter in Edmonton

[–]fubes2000 0 points1 point ago

Like everyone else said, yup.

On the flipside, in midsummer the sun doesn't completely set until after 10, and for a short time even 11.

[–]tehvgg 0 points1 point ago

What's great is outside of winter months, we only have like 4 hours of dark haha. Right now sun rises around 4.

[–]justanupvoteaway 1 point2 points ago

It is referred to as the Buzzard Coulee meteorite

[–]Halbjorn 2 points3 points ago

I remember that. It was a pretty wild sight.

[–]Bushybushings 0 points1 point ago

I was in fuckin' guitar lessons that time. The only reason I can remember it is because I remember that Thursdays fuckin' SUCKED.

[–]TharsisRise 72 points73 points ago

[–]Evantron 16 points17 points ago

I demand the source of this!

[–]WhaleTaleMan 32 points33 points ago

I'm gonna put myself out there and say it was a nuclear bomb.

[–]matebeatscoffee 0 points1 point ago

Looks hydrogen...

[–]realigion 12 points13 points ago

Which is still a nuclear bomb.

[–]Twisted_Fate 0 points1 point ago

Thermonuclear ?

[–]matebeatscoffee -1 points0 points ago

TIL :).

[–]nickyjames 1 point2 points ago

BURNED, MOTHER FUCKER!

[–]matebeatscoffee 0 points1 point ago

[–]dilligasatall 4 points5 points ago

I think this is the original video, it's been reversed and cleaned up for the gif. http://youtu.be/ltK7ClQW6Lw?t=1m21s

[–]Lusst 1 point2 points ago

So awesome...

[–]Rydea 0 points1 point ago

thats exactly what I thought...awesomeness at its purest form! hahaha!

[–]lamarer 2 points3 points ago

Pretty sure its from "A Beautiful Mind", but it may have been borrowed.

[–]Ceejae 0 points1 point ago

I don't remember a scene like that...?

[–]Pandajuice22 3 points4 points ago

A Beautiful Mind 2: The Illusions Strike Back.

[–]lamarer 0 points1 point ago

When Nash is being debriefed by Parcher about the threat of communism, he is shown a video of classified information, including a clip of a nuclear explosion's aftermath.

[–]TharsisRise 0 points1 point ago

No idea man. Try Youtube.

[–]canyoushowmearound 1 point2 points ago

It's so cool/scary how the telephone poles and wires start to smoke just from the intensity of the light before the shock wave arrives!

[–]cheechw 0 points1 point ago

I think actually the dust is from the vibration of the earth, and then the shockwave travelling through the air blew the dust away.

[–]TharsisRise 0 points1 point ago

Everyone commenting on this has a destruction boner.

[–]Grwl 0 points1 point ago

Thank you so god damn much for that laugh

[–]datTrooper -1 points0 points ago

Can't stop looking at that...

[–]TharsisRise 0 points1 point ago

As mesmerizing as this.

[–]Sweet_Tangerine50 112 points113 points ago

I was thinking it was a star like in Stardust.

[–]5dollarcheezit 53 points54 points ago

This is a big ol frozen chunk of poopie.

[–]deweyfinn 15 points16 points ago

Man, I ate fries off of that!

[–]EridMeatGrinder 1 point2 points ago

That's a space peanut...

[–]ironGoliad 0 points1 point ago

I like the butt release part

[–]Sgt_Smiles 9 points10 points ago

I don't think its Canada because the meteor didn't slow down to apologize for going so fast and being so bright.

[–]analbiologist 11 points12 points ago

So this is what it feels like to be a dinosaur!

[–]kels15 30 points31 points ago

I didn't know horses had dashboard cams.

[–]fubes2000 9 points10 points ago

They don't, but dogsleds do.

[–]Seanothan -1 points0 points ago

Bahahaha, who would downvote this?!

[–]kels15 1 point2 points ago

Thank you :)

[–]FlowchartDelicious -1 points0 points ago

and for that matter, that horses have dashboards

[–]kels15 1 point2 points ago

You make an excellent observation.

[–]chupacabrando 2 points3 points ago

Oh shit, is there more video/news links about this?

[–]PhoneDojo[S] 2 points3 points ago

Here you go

Edit: better link

[–]man_gomer_lot 1 point2 points ago

Here's a CTV report on it when it happened.

[–]aicanhascupcakez 4 points5 points ago

Should have followed it. If I've learned anything from movies/tv shows it's that meteors are filled with accessories that give super powers.

[–]mbg98 1 point2 points ago

Or the Blob.

[–]mbg98 1 point2 points ago

Or the Blob.

[–]strohmbad 10 points11 points ago

that's no meteor... and I welcome our new alien overlords

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

The worst possible comment I could read after getting back from watching Prometheus....

[–]DaytonaZ33 2 points3 points ago

I watch that and wonder about how that may be eerily similar to what the last humans on Earth see.

[–]SamWalt 2 points3 points ago

I saw one very similar to this while backpacking in Patagonia. I'll never forget the feeling of fear (I had never seen anything like that) melting into complete awe. One of the top moments of my entire life.

[–]fancyunderwear 2 points3 points ago

This was 2008 and there has been no follow-up? The articles claim they were going to try and find it. Wouldn't something that bright indicate that you would see an impact (probably very localized though) with an aerial shot? I want to see the piece of rock (or toolbox, lol) and an aerial shot, damnit.

[–]starcane 2 points3 points ago

i remember that. everyone thought it was Optomus prime because the first transormer movie had just come out

[–]kylewilky 2 points3 points ago

im canadian so automatic upvote.

[–]ChesusChris 7 points8 points ago

THOR

[–]iwantthatpurpledrank 1 point2 points ago

Was looking to see if I was the only one.

[–]Decatf 1 point2 points ago

Combine this with that Toronto propane explosion and you've got some doomsday footage.

[–]lwest340 1 point2 points ago

And here we see a fellow Lantern coming to fight the good fight.

[–]The_Morbid_Toaster 1 point2 points ago

I saw this all the way down in B.C. I thought it was a firework at first.

[–]ocee16 1 point2 points ago

Cue the x-files theme

[–]phis6 1 point2 points ago

This could be worse....Stephen King's Poop Weasels could be on that meteorite.

[–]v3n0m0u5 1 point2 points ago

ALIENS

[–]fishanlers 2 points3 points ago

Meteor? No it is Thor...

[–]hungry138imp 1 point2 points ago

"Meteor" streaking across the "sky"... Yeah right ALIEN SYMPATHIZER!

[–]thisis4reddit 1 point2 points ago

On our last day on Maui, my boyfriend and I woke up at 2am, hustled into our rented jeep and drove up Haleakala - their inactive volcano - to catch our second sunrise. The first time time we ended up seeing a beautiful but cloudy mess of sunrise and there were so many people. This time we wanted better pictures and a better seat.

We arrived at our destination (the second peak from the top) and chose a semi-secluded section at the top of the hill. No one was there. Scott took his time to setup his GoPro and SLR on tripods; there are no streetlights on a volcano and it's damn dark at 4am. We sat on a rock, snuggled close and listened to nothing. I held his hand and whispered, "look at the stars with me." We leaned our heads back and I swear to god, we saw a meteor the exact same size explodes over our heads.

And damn, that sunrise was beautiful.

[–]Blue_Shift 1 point2 points ago

Fireball meteors are the best. I'm so happy I can say I've seen one in my life. It wasn't quite as magnificent as the one in your gif, but god damn was it beautiful.

[–]brluwi 1 point2 points ago

i saw my first one few weeks ago. Also not nearly as impressive as this, but was awesome.

[–]cold_fire149 1 point2 points ago

Nice try aliens.

[–]ninjagato 1 point2 points ago

SUPER MAN IS GOING TO BE CANADIAN!

[–]elias1jose 0 points1 point ago

Damn... Canada always gets the cool stuff...

[–]IZuStY 0 points1 point ago

[–]Alecohol 0 points1 point ago

[–]Paddy_Tanninger 0 points1 point ago

[–]HayHaxor 0 points1 point ago

The auto bots are coming! The autobots are coming!

[–]Drunken-Nose-Picker 0 points1 point ago

That's no meteor!

[–]yonips 0 points1 point ago

I know this is pretty damn cool and all, but imagine if a meteor just fell on your house. That is pretty fucking fucked up, man.

[–]imthetruestrepairman 0 points1 point ago

Is that flash from when the meteor hits the earth's atmosphere? It seems a little low.

[–]Matt872000 0 points1 point ago

I actually saw this one from Manitoba. It was really impressive...

[–]Gui1tyspark 0 points1 point ago

No, pretty sure that was Mjolnir falling to Earth and Stan Lee is trying to pull it out with his pick up truck right now.

[–]CanadianEgg 0 points1 point ago

Was this in Calgary because my brother said he saw something

Go get it! You'll get superpowers!

[–]Reggief -1 points0 points ago

Shit! I remember this. Was driving to hockey when the sky lit up for a second. Didn't think it was anything but a light being flashed at my car until I saw the news later.

My Geology professor was actually one of the researchers who found some of the meteorite where it crashed.

[–]piebraket 0 points1 point ago

It's a UFO, bro.

[–]brando347 0 points1 point ago

i saw this while in my backyard in calgary. It was very cool

[–]SelfRespectingSkitzo 0 points1 point ago

All I have to say, http://bit.ly/NTKxry

[–]jokoon 0 points1 point ago

It looks like it slows down while entering the atmosphere, because of aerodynamical drag.

[–]axegrinder95 0 points1 point ago

For some reason when I went streaking across Canada I got arrested

[–]Majimanidoo 0 points1 point ago

Everytime I see a dashboard cam I think to myself, Why do I not have one of these things. Then I realize I dont do anything exciting even behind the wheel.

[–]dafreeboota 0 points1 point ago

Did it apologize as it landed?

[–]lousyshot55 0 points1 point ago

Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor

[–]muyrec 0 points1 point ago

[–]Jacknuggett 0 points1 point ago

The first thing I would have thought after seeing that is "we're all gunna die"

[–]TheWhite2086 0 points1 point ago

That's not a meteor, that's what the sun looks like in winter in Canada

[–]NTARelix 0 points1 point ago

I was walking with a friend in the forest behind my house one night and the atmosphere lit up like this. I've long wondered what might have caused it.

[–]Endless_Tunnel 0 points1 point ago

Wow

[–]fallingbrick 0 points1 point ago

Superman has finally arrived!

[–]chetti990 0 points1 point ago
