It isn't death that scares me, it's the build up towards it.

[–]binary-love 2 points3 points ago

I'm an atheist and my fear is that when I'm about to die, I'll look back only to realise my life wasn't exciting enough...

edit: relative xkcd.

I like how wise and dreamy this image makes him look. Not ten seconds ago I heard him say "My scrotum is as pink as a baby's cunt" on his podcast.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

Uh, it's not death that's scary, it's the PAIN of death that puts me off.

There are sooo many painful ways to die...

Once you're dead you're fine, it's the actual process of dying that sucks balls.

[–]AManHasSpoken 0 points1 point ago

How would you know? Once you're finished with the process, you're dead.

[–]Jeezafobic 2 points3 points ago

I've watched many people die, both quickly and over a period of months. The ones who died from bone cancer had intense pain that medication could not control--so they spent time groaning and crying and on occasion screaming. being dead is neutral, dying can be worse than you can imagine.

All the weekly front page repeats in R/atheism and you're butthurt I posted something that hasn't been posted in 1/4 a year on my cakeday? COME ONNNNNNN.

[–]LkCa15 3 points4 points ago

Is it just me who is terrified of death?

[–]A_Suvorov 4 points5 points ago

Being terrified of death, although we can logically reason against being so, is perfectly natural. Our species wouldn't have come this far and evolved so greatly if we didn't have some predisposition against death.

Almost every thinking creature today fears death, because we have all evolved to fear death (avoid death might be a more accurate description in the case of some lesser intelligent species). Any genetic line that doesn't fear death is much more likely to die out.

We, as humans, are unique, because our reasoning skills are to the point that many, though not most, can overcome this primal fear.

Even so, when faced with imminent death in the course of daily life, practically every person in the world will fear. Even if we have consciously rejected fear of death, when the gun is in our face, when the train is barreling towards us, we will feel fear. Because though we are highly intelligent, when the shit really hits the fan our conscious minds freeze, and we are directed by our instincts. And our instincts will always fear death. Because if we had not evolved that way, we would have died out long ago.

[–]ENDLESSfallout 0 points1 point ago

Very well put Sir (Or Madam).

I think this fear is most prevalent during the teenage years, must likely during puberty. It is at this point that we realize how precious and fragile Life is. They realize this, and most fear, for sometimes weeks or months on end. I believe almost all humans go through this phase of fear at some point, and I do believe that this helps the person in the long run.

I am currently going through this phase myself, as I am 14. This post has really shaken my fear of Death, so now every time I think about Death, I'll just remember this quote, and think, 'Hey, at least I won't know I'm dead'.

Edit: spelling

[–]mexicanninja23 1 point2 points ago

No.

[–]shimmyjimmy97 0 points1 point ago

that is a good fucking point

[–]Ryan1014 1 point2 points ago

Not as eloquent as Epicurus, but still funny.

[–]DangerHeck 0 points1 point ago

I love this quote

[–]rhuester 0 points1 point ago

This is precisely how I feel. It's hard for some people to wrap their heads around, though.

[–]bageltogo 0 points1 point ago

It's Jim "Jefferies", not "Jeffries" http://jimjefferies.ning.com/

He actually has a somewhat funny story about the reason for that too: http://youtu.be/ZNiGiBfMeh0

[–]marcussantiago 0 points1 point ago

I though the went as one, then the other, because there's another actor with the same name. Therefore you'll find his work with both spellings. I could be wrong, though.

[–]bageltogo 0 points1 point ago

According to that video interview, he added the extra "e" precisely because there is another actor with that name.

[–]A_Suvorov 0 points1 point ago

This is almost exactly what I keep telling people. But they always look at me like I'm just nuts!

The only reason people are nervous/apprehensive/fearful of things is because they dislike the consequences. They don't like how they might feel afterward!

But the great thing about being dead, is that you can't give a shit that you're dead. Because you're fucking dead!

[–]sixpowerup 1 point2 points ago

dude, this is the reason im not athiest. death scares me, death as an athiest. i don't know what to do, if everything would just stop. it'd be horrifying. and this doesn't mean im a slave to christinity, and if i can just get over my fear, then i'd be fine. this means im not about to believe in something just because a ton of people say it's right. because, this thing, it scares me

[–]marcussantiago 0 points1 point ago

As many others have pointed out, you're not really scared of death, you're scared of the dying part, of pain and suffering. Which is perfectly normal and natural. Being dead is like the time you spent before you were born. Remember that? Exactly.

[–]sixpowerup 0 points1 point ago

yeh, i said that. that's why im not athiest. im afraid of death like that, going nowhere. and im not about to believe something im afraid of :P

[–]zap-throwaway- 0 points1 point ago

I get scared by the fact that I will be nothing one day... and then I try not to think about it.

[–]thelordxl 0 points1 point ago

Honestly I cry when I think about it. Nothingness is really fucking scary. I don't want to not exist. Physically I don't care, but no thought. No nothing? I know I wont know it, but, I'm horribly trembling right now typing this.

[–]hueymchavok 0 points1 point ago

any Talkin Shit-heads out there? ;D

[–]HalfRetardHalfAmazin 1 point2 points ago

I saw him live last Saturday. He's fucking great.

[–]MrDoubleE 0 points1 point ago

True Story.

[–]nonsince 0 points1 point ago

Still pretty weird to think that you were here on this Earth for a while and then all of a sudden, POOF, you're gone. for eternity. and nothing you ever did will matter or be remembered when time approaches infinity

Jim Jeffries on reposts.

[–]pointmanzero 0 points1 point ago

i've been saying this for years, why does he get credit?

[–]Zeugirdor994 2 points3 points ago

Because he said it on TV

[–]TheActualAWdeV -4 points-3 points ago

Well, he's a dipshit.

I too am an atheist and I'm fucking terrified of death and dying. "Not scared because atheist" is bullcrap.

[–]Iamgoingtooffendyou 4 points5 points ago

Maybe that is why some religions were started, because people are afraid of the unknown.

[–]TheActualAWdeV 1 point2 points ago

Probably yeah. Fear and confusion caused those rather than any deities. :P

[–]Iamgoingtooffendyou 0 points1 point ago

People have great influences on their religions.

[–]TheActualAWdeV 0 points1 point ago

Not always.

[–]rasputine 11 points12 points ago

Turns out people have different reactions to the unknown, and clearly those who don't share your opinion are stupid.

[–]TheActualAWdeV -2 points-1 points ago

Yeah, you for example. >:U

Kidding, that wasn't my point. I'm just pointing out the false equation used there.

Which I think I clarified in the original post anyway.

And I realise people have different reactions to the unkown. hat was my point. He's the one saying you can't be afraid of dying if you're an atheist.

And it's a bit odd how every random unkown fellow gets lauded as some sort of hero around here simply because he makes a pithy remark that seems deep but when someone says anything about it is bullshit, well he's gonna have a bad time.

[–]rasputine 2 points3 points ago

Notice the pronoun "I" in the quote?

Yeah. It's because he's talking about himself.

[–]marcussantiago 0 points1 point ago

You should listen to the entire bit, there's more. He also questions the desire to be immortal / live forever / the afterlife. Why would anyone really want to live forever? How tedious and insanely boring that would be. I happen to agree.

Life is finite for good reason. It's not about living as long as possible, it's about living as MUCH as possible.

[–]TheActualAWdeV -1 points0 points ago

That's assuming there's a reason for anything. I don't believe that either.

And I'm not going to listen to the entire bit. I do not know this character and I'm not remotely interested either.

[–]stillbatting1000 -3 points-2 points ago

There's a few thousand NDE cases that would refute that.
