A lot of these are intentional, and the rest are bad subtitles.

[–]Icemasta 13 points14 points ago

First one is bad sub.

Second is intentional (Comes from Slayers, guy is immortal)

Third is most likely intentional (I stopped watching Bleach after 60 or so episodes, but the tl;dr is that he's a death god or some shit like that, so he's already dead technically).

Fourth, dunno.

Fifth, intentional. (Rurouni Kenshin, guy bragging is "known" to be fucking tough as hell, getting beat up senseless and still living. In that sense, he's just showing how confident he is in his body.)

Sixth, intentional and could be seen from a philosophical point of view. IE.: assuming true man means an honest/brave man, then he will be remembered and should have influenced a couple of people, thus while he dies, his true manliness or whatever remains.

Seventh, never watched One Piece.

Eight, rurouni kenshin again, dunno who he is talking about, probably intentional once again. If it was someone from his crew, he prolly meant of his crew member, it could make sense for 1 or 2 of them off the top of my head. Could also be speaking about Kenshin. I haven't watched that show in 10 years, so I dunno.

Rest I dunno

[–]Infectious_Cockroach 2 points3 points ago

To this day, Rurouni Kenshin is my favorite anime. In the first scene, I could easily see Sanosuke saying that since he was kind of a bull dog type of character. Very tough, not willing to even let death stop him from his goal.

The second one, he's probably talking about Kenshin and the look in his eyes when he gets serious about a fight.

[–]playerIII 1 point2 points ago

Live action movie to be released soon, as well as a manga reboot and a new anime going from Misaos perspective.

I am excite.

[–]TheBadHatter 0 points1 point ago

Rurouni Kenshin's one of my favorite anime too. I was completely obsessed with it during my early teen years when it aired on Toonami.

[–]Infectious_Cockroach 0 points1 point ago

That's when I first got into it as well, but I couldn't stand the English dubs. I enjoy English subs much more.

[–]lukeman3000 0 points1 point ago

Pop quiz time. What's the guy's name in the eight picture? No search engines!

[–]Infectious_Cockroach 0 points1 point ago

Ohhh man... I haven't watched Kenshin in like two years... I know his first name starts with an S, but his last name is Aoshi or something like that.

[–]lukeman3000 0 points1 point ago

You're really close. Shinomori Aoshi.

I'm ashamed because I had to google it, and I'm in the middle of season 3 : /

[–]DanOkami 23 points24 points ago

I know for certain the Death Note one is bad subs. I watched the entirety of that series, and I do not recall L ever saying something remotely like that.

[–]not_rumplestiltskin 15 points16 points ago

The ones from TTGL and One Piece say exactly what they mean, and some of the others also. The top one is certainly bad subs.

[–]DanOkami 4 points5 points ago

Not discounting those, just sayin' that the Death Note one is bad subs.

The Bleach one seems 100% legit, though. It's something I can see Renji saying.

[–]chanjkh 29 points30 points ago

The context of the Death Note one is that Matsuda got caught overhearing the Yotsuba group convo. Everyone thinks that they were going to kill Matsuda so they have him fake his death (pretending to fall off a building) under the belief that if he faked his death, Kira won't try to kill him later (hence he had to "die before getting killed").

I remember L saying it in the manga. Matsuda even gave a "wtf?" face in the next panel.

Edit: Chapter 42. Just went and checked... >_>

[–]DanOkami 2 points3 points ago

Oh. In that case it makes sense.

[–]m00sician 1 point2 points ago

L ;_;7

[–]orthag 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I was thinking that one actually made sense in the context of the show.

[–]ixxidi 9 points10 points ago

To be fair Renji does have a point. Ichigo has been killed and he's still here :P

[–]cptsir 2 points3 points ago

Yeah this is the case with this quote. It's actually legitimate. Ichigo dies and is brought to a point where other people die multiple times and he still lives.

[–]Diabro3 2 points3 points ago

When reading this, I thought Death Note was the only one where it might actually make sense

[–]not_rumplestiltskin 1 point2 points ago

Forgive me if it seemed that I was accusing. You seem like a man who knows his stuff!

[–]DanOkami 1 point2 points ago

Haha! Thanks, but I'm no expert, just a casual on-and-off anime watcher.

[–]Ckyuii 4 points5 points ago

Actually that sub is from the episode when matsuda gets caught by the yotsuba corporation and has to fake his own death before he is killed by Kira (and before Kira realizes he was given a fake name). It makes sense in context.

I need to get a life...

[–]DanOkami 0 points1 point ago

Indeed. I was mistaken, it's been quite a while since I've watched Death Note.

[–]Ckyuii 1 point2 points ago

It's no problem man. I only knew this because I literally just watched that episode yesterday :)

[–]snarkhunter 1 point2 points ago

Was going to say. I've seen some damn good fansubs, but there are a lot of "the rest".

[–]misterfanwank 25 points26 points ago

Don't believe in yourself! Believe in me! Believe in the Kamina, who believes in you!

[–]JohnComplains 6 points7 points ago

I imagine something gets lost in the translation.

[–]Cptnwalrus 6 points7 points ago

The one from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is actually pretty meaningful...

[–]campushippo 7 points8 points ago

Ebaums? Shame on you.

[–]ThirdFloorNorth 5 points6 points ago

The ones from Akagi and Death Note make perfect sense.

[–]divne 2 points3 points ago

I think that most of these mean that their spirit will still be present when they die. So they would still be alive in their hearts or some bullshit like that.

[–]jamesbiff 2 points3 points ago

Majority of this stuff comes from poor subtitling.

[–]guignoleyes 2 points3 points ago

The one from Death Note (third from the bottom) makes sense if you know the plot. Spoilers for those who don't want to know, but:

What the character there, L, is telling the man he's talking to on the phone is that he needs to fake his own death before he's killed by the bad guys.

Most of those are probably just bad translations, but out of context they might make some sense (the Gurren Lagann one, 6th down, also makes some sense if you understand Kamina.)

[–]SleeplessinOslo 1 point2 points ago

"Immortality... take it... it's yours!"

Amazing line if you get what it means

[–]Phalanks 1 point2 points ago

"The only thing you have to do, is die before getting killed" actually makes sense to me. There are a number of ways to die without being killed. I also feel like it was taken out of context, and that it possibly had something to do with the storyline.

[–]Gneissisnice 1 point2 points ago

There's gotta be some weird quirk to the translations because I can't imagine there being so many different examples of the same horribly bad grammar mistake.

[–]Ryganwa 1 point2 points ago

Idiomatic expressions and transliteration are not always the best bedfellows.

Also, puns. Fuck trying to translate puns in a contextually meaningful way.

[–]SpookyGent 1 point2 points ago

Everyone guessing there's something lost in translation are exactly right. The Japanese have a saying that if someone is tough then they "wouldn't die, even if you killed them". It doesn't literally make sense. This is because it's something called an "idiom". Pretty much every language has tons of them, people just don't notice because they're used to them. Like how you didn't question how phrases can have weight even though I said "tons of them" in the previous sentence.

In the first screencap the character is making the claim that this common Japanese idiom is, of course, literally incorrect. I think he was in some sort of life-or-death situation and was just pointing out the stakes were permanent despite the common cliche. It's actually a very reasonable line of dialogue, so it's a shame it gets laughed at out-of-context with "lol them crazy Japs!" etc.

Oh, and I think the first version of this image only had a few legit uses of "die when he/she is killed" which made more sense, but then with this version it got "beefed up" with similar lines that don't really fit - for instances of characters who fake their death, or have been resurrected, and I think "Shoot her to death, without killing her!" is just the character getting flustered and misspeaking.

[–]Narroo 1 point2 points ago

The exception that proves the rule!

[–]enigmatican 1 point2 points ago

exactly. It's a set phrase that doesn't literally mean the super obvious, rather that they are just really really tough.

[–]ZeraskGuilda 1 point2 points ago

Overkill much?

[–]TheHalfsightedOne 1 point2 points ago

To be fair, Spandam (guy with metal on his face, purple hair) is pretty retarded in the show, so its logical he'd say something that dumb, but the rest of them... -shrugs-

[–]PKfireice 0 points1 point ago

The "You have to die before you get killed" can actually make sense.

[–]Lefty07 0 points1 point ago

i actually recognized like 4 or 5 of those animes...

[–]bluemirror 0 points1 point ago

I like what L said

[–]I_promised_myself 0 points1 point ago

Harry Potter...

[–]rock61992 0 points1 point ago

Reminded me of that Lil Wayne song "3 Peat" "They cant stop me... even if they stopped me!"

[–]Michael_Lightning 0 points1 point ago

Kamina is actually correct in the context of the show.

[–]captainmurdoch1 0 points1 point ago

What show is the 8th shot from the top from?

[–]jcarberry 1 point2 points ago

Unless I'm sorely mistaken, it's the same as the one 5th from the top, Rurouni Kenshin. The character pictured is Shinomori Aoshi.

Fantastic show, even better manga.

[–]No_Warhawkz 0 points1 point ago

"He's been murdered, and somebody's responsible."

[–]ballseymcgee 0 points1 point ago

What anime is the 4th one from?

[–]pizzlewizzle 0 points1 point ago

Some of them are referencing the person being 'larger than life' but on others I'm starting to think the translators aren't fully understanding what kill means (like they think it means to seriously maim really bad or something)

[–]zombi3crunch 0 points1 point ago

actually im sure most of these have more meaning than whats on the surface. to be killed without dying; you may pass but you will be remembered; spirit lives on; ect; ect. (you can kill him but he wont die; his mortal being may be no more but his memories and ideals live on) OR! i could be wrong and the japanese really are just screwy, luv ya hun =3 (japanese/hawaiian fiance might see this)

[–]heartscrew 0 points1 point ago

For the record, Kamina proved what he said.

[–]haemess 0 points1 point ago

Well, that's not enough kill to death these people.

[–]Mr_Moosey 0 points1 point ago

What is the name of the show in the 6th picture? I've seen a few episodes, but long since forgotten the name.

[–]supermonkey1313 0 points1 point ago

That only applies to Harry Potter.

[–]prettymuchdrunk 0 points1 point ago

I was already aware of this type of ridiculously silly writing, but I had forgotten about Ebaumsworld. All those years ago...

[–]Darth2132 0 points1 point ago

Die in Japanese probably doesn't mean exactly what die in English means. Their word probably has a little more to it.

[–]Catmand0 0 points1 point ago

If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you can imagine!
