Reminds me of a joke: What do you tell a woman with two black eyes?

Nothing, you already told her twice

exactly. I really hate the idea that bad things only happen to those who deserve it.

If other posters are ignoring the "God got 'em but good didn't 'e?" vibe, then I would follow their lead with something neutral. Like: "wishing him a speedy recovery and minimal bills." If other folks are laying on the punishment aspect too, then flame away. My favorite is attacking them on their own ground: "you mean to tell me that God sees fit to deliver to you a warning, to provide for you a mostly living cautionary tale about the perils of doubting his omnipotence, and you have the audacity to presume that you are safe from his wrath? That you have so mastered grace, are so complete in your perfection that you need not worry? Poor, arrogant you. I weep for the confident man, the man who thinks himself secure in his mind, just in his standing, for go will strike down the arrogant to matter what the source of their disease."

A great example of why I'd never worship the Christian God, even if he was real.

I'm not you, but I wouldn't restrain myself. I hope you find the path that suits the situation though, as only you can decide how to respond.

Its touchy if you don't want to offend. You may want to go with simple well wishes, but you can push the envelope with some gentle repremands.

"Hope he makes it and all is well, though I hardly think this is the time to interperate God's will."

"I find it a little arrogant of us to think we can interperate all events as 'God's will.' even if you believe he has a plan for us all, I doubt think he places deadly obstacles in front of us to test us or bring us closer to him. That would be old testiment God".

There are other ways to ho about it. Sometimes avoidance is best, other times flat out embarrassment and rudeness works. I think good old shame can do the trick, and it can be done gently if done right.

Until you find out he is paralyzed from the neck down and goes into terrible depression and commits suicide.
