Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

[–]TheMSPaintKing 881 points882 points ago

This is VERY disorienting. I like it.

[–]nrbartman 514 points515 points ago

Then you'll probably like Zander Olsen's Tree Line project.

The picture from the Hungarian forest was from 2010....Zander's pieces date back to 2004....whoa, what if the toxic spill was part of his project...

[–]Yeeslander 99 points100 points ago

This reminds me of some of Andy Goldsworthy's works.

[–]The-Somnambulist 20 points21 points ago

i love his work. it is so meticulous and beautiful

[–]thatoneguy82101 22 points23 points ago

Argh, my brain does not like these

[–]gfixler 18 points19 points ago

Calm down, and look at this.

[–]Lt_Shniz 94 points95 points ago

Yeah, my eyes freaked out for a second. It's like two pictures were cut and pasted together

[–]gregdbowen 49 points50 points ago

It is because the line is exactly positioned on the horizon I think.

[–]MeEatCookies 7 points8 points ago

It almost makes it feel like it's fake because of this (I know it's not).

[–]Pmford 26 points27 points ago

I just said "whoa, nuh uh" very loud to my empty house.

[–]BullyPulpit[S] 13 points14 points ago

Definitely! Almost like an optical illusion...

[–]comosayllama 683 points684 points ago

It was the byproducts that were toxic, not the aluminum. Aluminum is actually pretty non-toxic.

FACT: Even if you drink 1-2 cups of molten aluminum every day, you won't die of poisoning.

[–]Culoomista 1103 points1104 points ago

You'd be dead from the extreme heat and solidifying of the aluminum instead.

[–]comosayllama 1333 points1334 points ago

As you can see, my facts are undeniable.

[–]The_Painted_Man 462 points463 points ago

Aluminum ingestion expert here - this all checks out.

[–]BrainSturgeon 286 points287 points ago

Oh, a fellow endoaluminologist?

[–]Zappulon 266 points267 points ago

Gastroaluminologist here, can confirm molten aluminum does not cause poisoning in the digestive system.

[–]AN_OFFICIAL_BEAR 361 points362 points ago

As a bear, I can verify that this is in fact a Gastroaluminologist.

[–]BEAR_VERIFIER 314 points315 points ago

As a bear verifier, I can verify that this is in fact an official bear.

[–]Tee900 153 points154 points ago

As a kid sitting at a computer I can verify nothing.

[–]TheSeedCraft 114 points115 points ago

As a guy who wasted 20 minutes laughing at the bear, I can verify I need to hoover my ceiling.

[–]Piscator629 12 points13 points ago

[–]DriveOver 3 points4 points ago

As a bear verification specialist, I question your credentials.

[–]Yeeslander 22 points23 points ago

Cave Johnson here - molten aluminum is perfectly safe for human consumption. However, the defecation of molten aluminum has not be sufficiently tested. Keep a plunger handy.

[–]Jorgwalther 18 points19 points ago

Now, is this like American aluminum or British aloomineeum?

EDIT: Like as in akin to, not Valley Girl.

[–]TheSeedCraft 12 points13 points ago

We pronounce it Al-uh-min-yum.

[–]engrey 6 points7 points ago

Aluminum? Given the username I would think it would be lead.

[–]FlowchartDelicious 13 points14 points ago

damn. what a solid movie. time to go watch it again!

[–][deleted] 52 points53 points ago

That's not what I heard. I heard from a dude in the locker room that drinking aluminum will make you jacked as all hell if you combine it with your ordinary protein/creatine/white phosphorus cycle.

[–]BranfordBound 21 points22 points ago

Cheesing is better than that.

You never do get to see her tits, though.

[–]ADangerousMan 7 points8 points ago

I feel like this rhymes.

[–]Tuna-Fish2 15 points16 points ago

There are plenty of aluminum salts that are soluble in water, and no matter what you are drinking, it naturally contains at least 0.4ppm of Al3+ ions. If the water is even slightly acidic, the concentration rises very rapidly.

So while GP was incorrect in his terminology, his point stands.

Excessive exposure to Al has been linked to nerve damage, but as the uptake is limited to about 10ug a day, you need very long term exposure for any ill effects.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

Your kidneys will blow out just about any excess aluminum that you have.

You only need to worry about excess aluminum when you have renal insufficiency or decreased GFR for some other reason..

[–]Vycid 36 points37 points ago

I'm pretty sure that consuming a ridiculous amount of even room temperature aluminum powder (NOT dietary aluminum ions) would kill you. NEVERMIND LOL

Step 1: Aluminum powder reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach. You start burping flammable hydrogen gas and the powder is converted to AlCl3 (6 HCl + 2 Al -> 2 AlCl3 + 3 H2)

Step 2: You die, because aluminum chloride is toxic (LD50 is 380 mg/kg orally for rats). Extrapolating to a 75 kg man, you'd need 0.38 g * 75 = 28.5 grams of aluminum chloride. Because the chlorine constitutes a large part of this mass and is added by stomach acid:

Atomic Weight Cl x 3 : 35.45 x 3 = 106.35 Atomic Weight Al: 26.98

Percent Aluminum by weight: 26.98 / (106.35 + 26.98) = 20.2%

So theoretically the amount of aluminum powder needed for a 50% chance of killing a 75kg man is 0.202 * 28.5 g = 5.76 grams of powder.

(Damn, that's less than I thought. Sanity check?)

We need ~30 grams of HCl in the stomach to make this happen. About 700 mL of gastric juice is secreted per meal, at a molarity of 0.1 for HCl.

This yields 0.7 * 0.1 = 0.07 moles of HCl.

MW HCl: 36.46 g / mol

Total mass in stomach = 36.46 * 0.07 = 2.55 g

I guess you wouldn't die then. You'd get sick, maybe? Derp. I'll leave this here anyway.

Tl;dr DISREGARD THIS I SCIENCED POORLY

[–]Eraser85 4 points5 points ago

To recap, you would need 30 grams of HCl in your stomach to transform all the 5.76gr of alu powder into AlCl3 but you only get 2.55g per meal.

I'm not a chem graduate (instead, I've a Master in CS) but assuming a linear scale factor you would transform only ~0,49gr of aluminium (11,76%) which should be rather safe..

Edit: math

[–]Tossedinthebin 3 points4 points ago

Aluminum hydroxide is injected into people as an adjuvant in vaccines.

[–]Rawrjumping 11 points12 points ago

Mind citing a source with that claim?

[–]bready 27 points28 points ago

Key word is molten, ~660C or ~1200F.

[–]thegouch 308 points309 points ago

[–]Boris41029 1032 points1033 points ago

Amazing, it almost looks like you pasted two photos together.

*for clarity, I'm saying it looks AS IF someone pasted two photos together, not that someone did. But I can see how that sentence could be read in an asshole's voice.

[–]scribbling_des 47 points48 points ago

Looks like that, but its a real photo of real trees that are really half red.

Edit: Just in case everyone missed the source

[–]lordlicorice 172 points173 points ago

It was probably originally a multi-shot panorama which was very badly stitched together. You can tell by the grid of stitch lines:

[–][deleted] 119 points120 points ago

Ah yes, pixels and such.

[–]mcdronkz 35 points36 points ago

Yep. If the picture was real, those pixels would have a little more dimensionality and depth.

[–]slikar 44 points45 points ago

how much more dimensionality do you want from me?

  • Pixel

[–]Worryaboutstuff 706 points707 points ago

[–]RageOverflows 528 points529 points ago

OOOHHHH, now I see it.

[–]butlersrevenge 108 points109 points ago

Yes...I also can see those things that are there.

[–]slikar 24 points25 points ago

They persist.

[–]st_basterd 196 points197 points ago

Looks like tetris to me.

Damnit... now the song is stuck in my head

For some reason this made me want to play Pandemic...

[–]Copse_Of_Trees 2 points3 points ago

Yay, was hoping someone would post this awesome vid.

[–]brandy606 37 points38 points ago

I don't :( what do the boxes mean?

[–]KrustyKreme 77 points78 points ago

Each box is an ominous proof of your own impending death.

[–]haunted_nipple 10 points11 points ago

Creepy. I like it.

[–]mcdronkz 245 points246 points ago

Turns out it didn't actually happen: http://i.imgur.com/shAd6.jpg

[–]RUPTURED_ASSHOLE 75 points76 points ago

So about three fiddy?

[–]twoclicks 138 points139 points ago

It's a schooner.

[–]lumosnox 23 points24 points ago

All I see is a sailboat.

[–]zat1983 13 points14 points ago

You dumb bastard. That's not a schooner, it's a sailboat!

[–]it2d 161 points162 points ago

I can't see what those boxes are supposed to be highlighting.

[–]JewBoySandler 260 points261 points ago

No, I'm pretty sure the tactic is "randomly box things and pretend I'm a genius at this stuff." but I'm not so sure:/

[–]bing_bong 48 points49 points ago

I want to feel better, but I don't know if I do.

[–]JewBoySandler 24 points25 points ago

It's okay, bring it in. Hug

[–]Escheria 32 points33 points ago

There are very faint seams running down the middle of each box. Look for almost-invisible lines. The clearest, imo, are in the middle of the purple crosses and in the upper portion of the upper right box.

[–]drugaddledfiend 5 points6 points ago

Thank you!

[–]RTaynn 2 points3 points ago

Thanks found them!

[–]scribbling_des 73 points74 points ago

Other than possible stitching, this image isn't shopped. These trees really look like this.

Edit: just in case everyone missed the source

[–]superparticular 19 points20 points ago

Nice try, Hungarian Foreign Minister.

[–]RageOverflows 38 points39 points ago

I have no idea what you're trying to point out..but I think you know what you're talking about.

[–]EricRP 18 points19 points ago

The linked image is very slightly smaller than the original available on the site. These are scaling artifacts. Imagine a grid of boxes over the photo where along the gridlines, perfectly horizontal/vertical distortion or blurring appears. Inside the grid however it appears there is even blurring all around. That's what I get from comparing the pictures.

[–]BullyPulpit[S] 247 points248 points ago

Get the full story and see more images here. The photo series documents the aftermath of a 2010 toxic waste spill in Western Hungary, which killed nine people.

[–]mastercylinder2 55 points56 points ago

How are those trees still alive?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]NoNeedForAName 50 points51 points ago

I'm having a hard time seeing how the breaking of holding tanks isn't a spill.

[–]cheesehoof 6 points7 points ago

I guess the waste was held in ponds rather than tanks, still a spill.

[–]CaptOblivious 7 points8 points ago

You can clean up a spill, a flood has to run off.

When it's 3 or 4 feet deep, that's not a spill anymore.

[–]Karnaugh_Map 12 points13 points ago

A dike broke, not holding tanks.

Edit: also, it's hard to make out the top portion, but your "Farmland" photo looks to be from before the incident.

[–]cockdeath 12 points13 points ago

there is a joke here somewhere

[–]taxablemantis 38 points39 points ago

So a dike walks into a bar. Bartender asks "What'll it be?". Dike says "I don't know, I'm broke."

[–]xenoph2 5 points6 points ago

For more pictures, see "Vörösiszap katasztrófa" (Hungarian for "red mud catastrophy").

[–]dreamstatemind 8 points9 points ago

So the flood was not the result of a spill?

[–]MisterCortez 20 points21 points ago

Yeah if a tank breaks and stuff 'flows' out of it, that's what we call a spill.

Source: I'm an oil pumper.

[–]bsteeper 25 points26 points ago

Additional source: I speak English.

[–]OnlySlightlyBent 3 points4 points ago

I can confirm: These people are using english.

[–]dreamstatemind 11 points12 points ago

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. Something about the "No offense to OP but it also wasn't really a spill." kinda grinded my gears because it was, in fact, a spill. And said spill resulted in a flood.

[–]0bsesshun 36 points37 points ago

Soooo, basically I'm looking at a bunch of shit stains right now.

[–]yofog 111 points112 points ago

No. Waste from aluminum production, not human waste

[–]WhyAmINotStudying 87 points88 points ago

I eat a lot of aluminum cans and this looks just like the stains in my underpants.

[–]4_word_replies_only 110 points111 points ago

Those are blood stains.

[–]st_basterd 8 points9 points ago

Yum.

[–]pzrapnbeast 5 points6 points ago

[–]russlo 2 points3 points ago

Yup. Spot on. Nice.

[–]Engineer3227 7 points8 points ago

[–]The_Painted_Man 5 points6 points ago

[–]0bsesshun 19 points20 points ago

Oh, okay. Much better. I was just imagining the poor soul who had to endure the smell while taking the picture.

[–]papa-jones 9 points10 points ago

I'm assuming the guy is on a show and being filmed in a dark room? What show is this?

[–]0bsesshun 13 points14 points ago

Here's the video. Gif starts at 1:50

[–]tweezyb 27 points28 points ago

Yes, it killed 9 people, but how many more gained super powers?

[–]VallanMandrake 7 points8 points ago

A creative way to describe cancer and genetic defects.

[–]sartan 3 points4 points ago

Thanks for citing the article and providing more information behind it. Very interesting - and sobering to realize the volume of material it took to do so much damage.

[–]khag 34 points35 points ago

Ajka alumina plant accident wiki article

TL;DR: Byproduct of aluminum production is "Red Mud" which is held in ponds. It is mostly oxidized Iron, aka rust, which is why it is rust colored. Dam broke, a whole lot of red mud made it into a water source and flooded land and forests.

[–]BullyPulpit[S] 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for the TL;DR!

[–]catpants9001 24 points25 points ago

thats freaky! it messes with my eyes

[–]xTRYPTAMINEx 4 points5 points ago

I could only look at it for 2 seconds before it felt like my eyes were going to water

That cat lived but got killed by a car or something afterwards. I saw another article about it a few months ago.

[–]iamthemantis 19 points20 points ago

[–]Opfailicon 6 points7 points ago

The reason it fucks with your eyes so much is because the demarcating line of sludge on the near row of trees aligns nearly perfectly with the horizon line.

[–]WalleB 9 points10 points ago

Voltree?

[–]silenc3x 5 points6 points ago

I like how he lined up the sludge edge with the horizon line of the forest in the backround. Helps to make it seem almost fraudulent.

[–]mr__moose 3 points4 points ago

anyone else get dizzy looking at this?

[–]nick-greco 38 points39 points ago

That's crazy it looks like a carelessly done Photoshop job

[–]NoShftShck16 2 points3 points ago

Ow my brain, that hurts to look at.

[–]Wolf97 1 point2 points ago

That gave me a headache.

[–]thesishelp 4 points5 points ago

It works well because the picture is taken at an angle that merges the red high point and the horizon into one divisive line that serves to make the juxtaposition between the danger of toxic spills and the frailty/resilience of nature.

[–]plutPWNium 5 points6 points ago

trees still living, bitches.

[–]alphababe259 2 points3 points ago

TIL trees are more resilient than I thought.

[–]TheMSensation 2 points3 points ago

TIL toxic aluminium spills don't affect tree growth

[–]Randyh524 2 points3 points ago

Don't touch the ground it's lava!

[–]dingdongrb 2 points3 points ago

When I first saw the pic I thought I was living in Southern China again. Seems like nearly every city in Southern China painted the tree trunks red. I asked the locals and they seemed to think it had something to do with keeping the insects off but were unsure.

[–]robo4536 2 points3 points ago

hey, in Mexico they were painted white. they also said it had to do with insects.

[–]nerdcorerising 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of the last time I had Chipotle for dinner.

[–]hatter6822 2 points3 points ago

Notice: You must be this tall to pollute the enviroment.

[–]farewelltokings2 4 points5 points ago

Microsoft still has more red rings to deal with than this.

[–]relishthethought 8 points9 points ago

Firstly, it's ALUMINIUM

second its not a 'toxic aluminium' spill

it was red mud which is a byproduct of aluminium oxide refining which contains amounts of aluminium oxide along with several other chemicals.

[–]person66 4 points5 points ago

Hmm... needs more RAINBOWS.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]relishthethought 2 points3 points ago

Technically the American spelling is older. But the international ALUMINIUM industry uses the word ALUMINIUM

I am an aluminium industry expert.

[–]green920 3 points4 points ago

[–]syosm 4 points5 points ago

Is it just me, or does this picture mess with your eyes in major ways?

EDIT: Just scrolled down. I'm glad I'm not alone.

[–]murmanjake 1 point2 points ago

Some high resolution photos of this disaster would have been cool.

[–]Kalashnikov74 1 point2 points ago

How big was the spill? That would have to be a crap ton if it filled a space that large, that high.

[–]GauchoMarx 1 point2 points ago

wow! totally trippy

[–]FullSail 1 point2 points ago

This spill was front page news in the NYT in 2010.

[–]darcygabe 1 point2 points ago

This is crazy. I was actually in Budapest when this happened in 2010

[–]kenny964 1 point2 points ago

Photoshop level : nature

[–]Atomskie 1 point2 points ago

I did some volunteer work in New Orleans after Katrina and there was a high water line on everything, the trees, the houses, telephone poles and it was this dusty, yet solid gray. Very eerie when driving. Inside the houses however, the high water mark could be seen by the fish stuck to the walls. Don't ask me how, but nearly every house had small(1/2"-8") fish stuck to the drywall near the high water mark.

[–]a82288 1 point2 points ago

is there a half red animal back there?

[–]pirateshade 1 point2 points ago

Them trees don't give a fuuuuuuuuuuck.

[–]sorgenvind 1 point2 points ago

I've seen footage of the aftermath of this accident before. Do you realize just how huge that slurry tank must have been? It must have been IMMENSE.

[–]Splinter1010 1 point2 points ago

This makes me dizzy.

[–]Insomniac7 1 point2 points ago

Amazing that the red line even affected the sheep in the background...

[–]jamandspoon 1 point2 points ago

It almost looks like two different pictures.

[–]Mikey129 1 point2 points ago
