It's not so much the bug idea. This work seems to be influenced by a school of Russian Literature in which something extraordinary happened and everyone acted as if it was ordinary. There's quite a famous one about a man who wakes up to find his nose has walked off. He later sees it walking down the street in his uniform. Fucking Russians man... It's a brilliantly simple way display complex sentiments. On top of this there are many links into Kafka's own life, he had an incredibly poor relationship with his father and, ultimately, Metamorphosis is a good way of describing snippets of thought and sentiment from this, while not at all slipping into allegory.

Good link. I've never seen the original version, just the translation that I own. I wouldn't be able to read the original anyway. In mine it actually does say "monstrous vermin", but based on the further description given (and what I knew about the story before reading it) I got the image of a giant bug.
