I just saw this episode last night. Lol. Ted is kind of a wanker for dumping a girl twice on her birthday.

[–]imjonathanblakeSwarley 18 points19 points ago

He's just really busy right now!

[–]a_s_h_e_n 3 points4 points ago

You're awesome.

[–]a_s_h_e_n 31 points32 points ago

Ted is usually kind of a wanker.

[–]uaregood 1 point2 points ago

Which episode is it?

[–]the_one_true_bPuzzles! 2 points3 points ago

[–]imaunitard -1 points0 points ago

WGN at 11:30 "East"? Me too.

o/

[–]leogg_lyl 1 point2 points ago

No, I saw it online. I'm pretty sure we don't have WGN in my country.

[–]imaunitard 6 points7 points ago

Okay. :=( internet high five retracted.

[–]RuafaolGaiscioch 3 points4 points ago

I sometimes wish it was less conventional, like, no laughtrack/four camera setup, but it is DEFINITELY not stupid. One of the smartest shows on TV

[–]Bagel 12 points13 points ago

I love NPH but I can't get past the laugh tracks. Don't tell me when to laugh just make it fucking funny.

[–]DrMcAutopsy 4 points5 points ago

It's super awkward without them. Czech it out. It's from the big bang theory because I couldn't find one for HIMYM

[–]deadpansnarker 6 points7 points ago

What makes that awkward is that they have to wait for the audience to stop laughing to continue on with the scene, much like what would happen during a play. If the show wasn't filmed in front of a live audience those pauses wouldn't be there

[–]greenelephants 1 point2 points ago

How I Met Your Mother is filmed privately then shown to a live audience. Those pauses aren't really there, tbh sometimes I forget there is even a laugh track.

[–]deadpansnarker 0 points1 point ago

my comment was geared towards the bbt clip

[–]greenelephants 0 points1 point ago

Fair enough haha. Nice tvtropes username.

[–]PatiusYOU JUST GOT SLAPPED. 0 points1 point ago

That's understandable. But if I'm getting you right, you don't find HIMYM funny, then why are you here?

Just a question.

[–]Bagel 2 points3 points ago

/r/all and the incessant need to shout my opinion at others.

[–]delusional_golfer 2 points3 points ago

I had the same reaction when I was watching HIMYM and my friend walked in and goes, "Is this men at work?"...Get out.

[–]futurelibrarian 20 points21 points ago

It kind of is? I mean, I like it, but I don't think it is some lofty intellectual show.

[–]AlCap0wned 23 points24 points ago

I actually came here to say this. Someone on this subreddit once described HIMYM as "The worst show that I make sure to watch every week" and that honestly sums it up pretty nicely for me. It's no Community or Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones or Mad Men.

[–]njndirish 18 points19 points ago

But it's still much better than 2.5 men and bbt

[–]Airazz 5 points6 points ago

[–]CFGX 0 points1 point ago

It's pretty ballsy to post this sort of thing in an echo chamber as powerful as a tv sub-reddit.

[–]futurelibrarian 9 points10 points ago

I love the show. I am a part of the subreddit. The show can be pretty dumb a lot of times. I am going to speak my opinion on it. Apparently that means I deserve downvotes. Which is fine, I don't care about karma, but I wish people would actually try to argue why I am wrong, rather than just post reaction gifs and tell me I am being ballsy.

[–]Bionerd 1 point2 points ago

The fact that you're comparably in the positives speaks well of this subreddit, I think.

[–]futurelibrarian 0 points1 point ago

I wasn't at first, which I thought was depressing. But now that I am in the positives, I would have to agree with you.

[–]guitartablelamp 0 points1 point ago

The thing about HIMYM is that it's full of crowd-pleasers, hence the gif-ability of the show. Lacking in subtly and raw writing talent, majoring in trends and what's been proven to work over the last couple of years.

[–]greenelephants 3 points4 points ago

I'd say 2.5 men/2 Broke Girls etc. fit this description better.

HIMYM is so popular because it takes crowd pleasers and puts its own (usually insane) twist on them, e.g. instead of a joke where the ladies man just likes suits a humorous amount (that you might see in Rules of Engagement), they make it into a full-blown musical number, with a crowd of suit-wearing dancers in the middle of New York and all the main characters joining in, just as a fantasy in Barney's head, only for him THEN to decide, after the song has just finished on a gigantic crowd harmony, that he'll just completely contradict him self and say he's given up suits and way so he can bang the chick because "Then again, she is pretty hot."

Only HIMYM would be so bold. Which is what makes it better, even if it's not cleverer.

[–]guitartablelamp 0 points1 point ago

It's the new generation of crowd-pleasing is what it is.

[–]greenelephants 0 points1 point ago

Maybe so, but I still haven't seen that type of writing on any other show. I'm just saying it's perhaps oversimplification to just bung it in with the rest of the crowd-pleasers. It's clever in that it almost always takes what you would expect and subverts it or exaggerates it. It has its own style and narrative voice that is definitely recognisable.

[–]sullipilot[S] -4 points-3 points ago

[–]senorchang14 -3 points-2 points ago

Compared to community, HIMYM is shit.

[–]EatingCake 4 points5 points ago

Please. Community is one of the most overrated shows on television. It's a skit comedy that's incredible when it gets it right, but it gets it right once or twice a season. It's no Louie.

[–]Hackey_SackAny dolt with half a brain - wait no -4 points-3 points ago

Why are you being downvoted? Compared to Community, everything that isn't Community is shit.

[–]ZeGoldMedal 9 points10 points ago

I like to see How I Met Your Mother as the Mac and Cheese of TV Shows. It's simple, always delicious, I'm always in the mood for it and it's hard to screw up (though, very occasionally, someone screws up). It's nothing gourmet, but I always look forward to it, and it will always be one of my favorites. Community falls in that gourmet category, with Arrested Development, Mad Men, and a few others. I'm not always in the mood for it, but it's delicious, takes a master to create, and belongs in a 4 or 5 star restaurant

[–]Captain_Generous 1 point2 points ago

Well said.

[–]redthedaAin't no thing but a chicken wing, mamacita -5 points-4 points ago

Haters gonna hate.

[–]Syphon8 -5 points-4 points ago

It's full of amazingly well written social commentary and life advice.

[–]The_CockamouseIt can fly! 5 points6 points ago

Have faith! My best friend once said that... and then I sat her down and made her watch 3 episodes with me. Now, not only is she almost on par with how much of a nerd I am for this show (she still has to watch season 7) but her entire family is hooked! There is hope!!!

[–]BiGEyE-6 2 points3 points ago

well we can't all be a barney like you.

[–]xHarry777 1 point2 points ago

Our friendship died before it even started </3

[–]evilseed 4 points5 points ago

it is

[–]mappum 2 points3 points ago

I think it's stupid, but I enjoy it quite a lot.

[–]spanglish14 2 points3 points ago

Serves him right!! How dare he...shakes fist

[–]Bionerd 0 points1 point ago

Duh-doy. HIMYM is kind of a stupid show, but for whatever it's faults, and they are not few, it has heart, and that goes a long way putting it above a lot of other sitcoms on the market right now. HIMYM gets mucho bonus points for at least trying some nonstandard storytelling techniques. Other shows (ahem Chuck Lorre ahem) are callously formulaic and risk averse. HIMYM isn't afraid to let their characters be human and unlikable at certain points. As an audience member, I like being pissed off when Ted tries to be a douche, because I care enough about the character to want him to be a better person. I cannot bring myself to care about characters in many other shows, and I watch a disturbing amount of bad television. No matter if a joke or one-liner in an episode happens to be funny or not, I cannot get behind a show that tries so hard to be liked by such broad demographics with flat characters.

[–]illmtK 0 points1 point ago

The show was good for 4-5 seasons but now it's milking its cow. I'm sure his kids don't give a fuck after season 6.

[–]arienh4True story. 1 point2 points ago

I'm fairly sure his kids didn't give a fuck after season one at the latest. Their reactions show as much.

[–]topherg29 2 points3 points ago

They have been using the same reactions for the entire show. (They wouldn't want to pay them to come in for each episode just to do a few reactions)

[–]Wulvaine 1 point2 points ago

There's also the fact that those actors have visibly aged, and it would be a bit awkward if they noticeably grew up while their dad is telling them a story.

[–]Captain_Generous 3 points4 points ago

Teds got some good looking kids.

[–]arienh4True story. 0 points1 point ago

Well, maybe, but even so the kids were getting fed up at the start already.

[–]anitabelle 0 points1 point ago

It really pisses me off when people just won't give it a chance!! I finally had one friend start watching only after her niece started raving about it too. Hooked after a couple of episodes. Got my sisters and niece hooked, but all other close friends won't bother. Except of course my best friend. Never had to convince her about how great it was because she's been a fan all along!

[–]Free_Time 0 points1 point ago

I like everything about this show, except for Ted, he is the reason I cannot watch it. Everything he says and does makes me cringe.
