OK so a quick google has brought up that exact image multiple times which tells me you didn't take this picture but rather found it online (that said though you didn't say you did so it's all cool) however the photo is taken with an infrared camera which is why the trees are purple )not natural) and the water is so blue (also not natural).

[–]StankBird 63 points64 points ago

Thank you for doing the research. Too many people see the pic and think its real without any thought involved.

[–]WaitJustOneSecond 17 points18 points ago

I knew it was fake immediately as it was making facebook rounds a couple weeks ago.

[–]bw1870 21 points22 points ago

Also, the vegetation was all purple - not just one or two varieties, but all of it.

[–]WaitJustOneSecond 4 points5 points ago

Well I shouldn't say fake as much as a repost as infrared pics can depict the vegetation that way.

[–]cdd89 7 points8 points ago

i knew holding on to the belief that it was real would end as soon as i got to the comments

[–]alcalde 0 points1 point ago

That's why I thought they were "fairy pools"... because everything was magically different colors, for some unknown reason....

[–]Oohdelally 2 points3 points ago

My heart kind of broke when I saw it was infrared, because I thought the same thing.

[–]alcalde 0 points1 point ago

I was about to bookmark it in a special subfolder I use for places I have to visit someday, then I read the comments... :-(

[–]iphonephotog -1 points0 points ago

It's not fake, it's IR and colored later. So not entirely real but definitely not fake.

[–]WaltDicksy 1 point2 points ago

I try :D

[–]njp999 0 points1 point ago

God forbid that happen

[–]ThomasRaith 25 points26 points ago

Also, this looks a lot like the Shotover River in New Zealand and not the Fairy Pools on Skye.

[–]WaltDicksy 1 point2 points ago

good catch

[–]XenthisX 1 point2 points ago

WOT Flagged your second link as dangerous. WOT Report.

[–]lebiro 1 point2 points ago

I did wonder why the "Fairy Pools" were a river.

[–]mattindustries 8 points9 points ago

Infrared leaves (leafs if you are looking for a pun) the image with a strange magenta, which is why most people change the image to black and white. You can see where the photographer (or person who found the image) tried to color in the water as blue, but failed miserably around the edges.

[–]UncleFishies 2 points3 points ago

A pun option? How gallant of you, sir/madam.

[–]WaltDicksy 0 points1 point ago

good catch I didn't notice that.

[–]mattindustries 2 points3 points ago

I am ashamed to admit I have used selective color on a river before when the scene looked too boring. Turns out the scene was still boring though.

[–]WaltDicksy 1 point2 points ago

I have no problem with photos being altered in this way however when I posted saying I had googled it and found there had been alterations, OP had literally just posted saying it was legit.

[–]mattindustries 9 points10 points ago

I have problems when it is done badly, or because the scene was otherwise uninteresting (my photo). I am a bit picky though and try to keep even my camera phone shots decent.

[–]WaltDicksy 2 points3 points ago

Upvoting for the awesome photo

[–]sweetluck 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was a fantastic pun.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

OP must have googled "most reposted image"

[–]WaltDicksy -2 points-1 points ago

lol

[–]shockd99 1 point2 points ago

I have been to the fairy pools on the Isle of Skye, and while they are amazing, they are not this picture so thank you for pointing it out.

[–]sensors 1 point2 points ago

And it's also definitely not Skye!

[–]HellsGuardian 0 points1 point ago

Infrared is a 10/10 technique.

[–]iphonephotog 0 points1 point ago

I don't see where he was claiming to have taken it?

[–]WaltDicksy 0 points1 point ago

He didn't. A quick google shows up a whole load of that picture. That kind of proves he just googled it but as I've said he didn't claim to have taken it.

[–]Spam4119 0 points1 point ago

I did the exact same thing lol

[–]GenerousBaggage 0 points1 point ago

I'm glad I know the truth now, but that still breaks my heart. I got really excited at the prospect of purple trees and too-blue water.

[–]seedpod02 4 points5 points ago

Here you go - purple jacaranda trees. I live in a street just like this one. Can't give you the water, tho.

Ed: Pic does not do justice to living under purple bowers - here's a better one

[–]aymers 0 points1 point ago

Wow that second pic looks amazing! Where is that?

[–]anazep 1 point2 points ago

in mexico we have a lot of jacaranda trees. they're my favorite!

here's a photo I took at Monte Albán, Oaxaca.

[–]seedpod02 1 point2 points ago

The ones in South Africa, where I live, are not indigenous, so, if they are from Mexico, thank you for the gift.

Unfortunately we are not allowed to plant them anymore because they are aliens so they've been made dying breed here (though I doubt the SA Goverment will have the will to enforce it because that does not put money in the pockets of the politicians :)

[–]seedpod02 0 points1 point ago

The pages says its from a suburb called Westcliff, South Africa. That's in Johannesburg, and is the suburb next to mine (Parkview). Those trees are still pretty small. Mine are much bigger.

I call them the exam tree because if you have not started studying by the time they begin flowering, you can be pretty sure of failing.

[–]GenerousBaggage 0 points1 point ago

What a sweet man/woman!

[–]Kelsomatic 0 points1 point ago

I am so sad now.

[–]BermudaCake 35 points36 points ago

Having just returned from the Isle of Skye, here's a picture that was taken while I was there. http://i.imgur.com/R1agU.jpg I didn't see any fairy pools around. Skye's an amazing place but there's a distinct lack of purple trees.

Makes me wonder what other rubbish claws its way to the front page.

[–]onering 19 points20 points ago

I was just there yesterday! And I happened to go swimming in the Fairy Pools, here is a picture we took! http://imgur.com/xP3zX

Also, for those going to the Isle of Skye and would like to see the Fairy Pools (well worth it), it's close to the distillery towards Glenbrittle.

[–]JdoubleE5000 2 points3 points ago

For those curious/wondering, it is the Talisker distillery, the only one on the Isle of Skye.

[–]BermudaCake 0 points1 point ago

Oh wow, I didn't realise that the fairy pools were actually a real place, even if they're not purple. Great place, Skye, though. The weather has been so great recently, it's a shock compared to the forecasts!

[–]onering 1 point2 points ago

The trees are not purple (in fact there were not many tree right near the pools), but there was a lot of purple heather in bloom. The picture doesn't do it justice. I just spent a week in Scotland, and the Fairy Pools were definitely my favourite part.

Good lord...

[–]MentalProblems 13 points14 points ago

I love how people on Reddit see Scotland and Ireland as magical locations where everything is weird coloured and put through a filter.

[–]slothenstein 9 points10 points ago

The truth is it's grey and bleak. All the time.

[–]MentalProblems 1 point2 points ago

Yup. Then sunshine for 10 minutes, and then grey and bleak again.

[–]Verifixion 7 points8 points ago

I'm from Scotland and can tell you that this is definitely not on Skye

[–]InternetSam 16 points17 points ago

I wish people would stop posting color edited photos of interesting places.

[–]LOOKITSADAM 3 points4 points ago

looks like an IR filter to be honest, no editing needed.

[–]frobischer 2 points3 points ago

Look up some of the multitude of pictures of fields of heather in Scotland. There you'll find the natural purple you are looking for.

[–]Aethari 2 points3 points ago

I cannot be the only person who saw this and immediately thought of the boundary between Ashenvale and Azshara, north of Orgrimmar... -_-

[–]F1A 0 points1 point ago

Lol'd just nostalgia'd hard.

[–]ladyderpette 0 points1 point ago

Yep. First thought was, "Huh, Ashenvale."

[–]no_love_jerome 4 points5 points ago

i wanted this to be real so bad. so often I would save pics from earthporn, note its location, and remind myself that if i go to said country, to visit the place/landscape. While I was saving this picture I simultaneously and excitedly opened my airlines website to check out fares to Scotland. I closed shortly after reading the comments.

Guess I will never know how much it cost to fly to Scotland.

[–]wanderinglibrarian 5 points6 points ago

I promise you there are many things in Scotland that are more naturally beautiful than an adjusted photo of the fairy pools. You will NOT be disappointed by a trip made to the Isle of Skye. Might I suggest Loch Coruisk on the Southwest side of Skye?

[–]WaltDicksy 1 point2 points ago

Whilst this picture is edited it doesn't stop Scotland from being the most beautiful country I've ever visited (I live here so I might be biased). Anything on the west coast is just amazing but the east coast is fantastic too. If you want mountains and lochs then west coast. If you want some of the most spectacular coastlines in the world then east coast. Or you know...both? :D

[–]WaltDicksy 1 point2 points ago

Just in case you do still fancy Scotland at all here is a selection of pictures showcasing (real) ladscapes and a few castles too :D

[–]Niqulaz 1 point2 points ago

Blatant and vile lies and photoshoppery! You can see clear skies and sun in several of those pictures! That's not possible!

[–]WaltDicksy 1 point2 points ago

The photos were all timed perfectly in the 23.4 seconds of glorious sunshine we get per year.

[–]Tyranus_Rex 0 points1 point ago

4 looks like it was the place where they found one of the 'tall guy' cave paintings in Prometheus. Several of those pictures look similar to flyovers in the movie as well.

[–]WaltDicksy 0 points1 point ago

A large deal of Prometheus was filmed on Skye and (I believe) other Scottish landscapes.

[–]imVINCE 0 points1 point ago

This made me laugh. Thank you. :o]

[–]Gothiks 5 points6 points ago

I hate you more than I hate this fabricated picture.

[–]Perizonium 1 point2 points ago

Mhh Talisker !

Time to load up the kayak.

[–]iAmericA45 1 point2 points ago

Did 2,244 people actually believe that there are purple trees?

[–]eyereport 1 point2 points ago

Don't you lie to me! I saw the Lorax!

[–]Spiffy313 1 point2 points ago

The number of upvotes this really, really fake picture has is concerning to me.

[–]WaltDicksy 4 points5 points ago

my fiance (who I am next to right now) reckons this is photoshopped as she is from skye and goes their often. Not calling you a liar but I am asking if the tree colours have been altered?

[–]pime 6 points7 points ago

Looks like it was taken with some sort of filter, probably infrared, to get the surreal looking colors.

[–]WaltDicksy 2 points3 points ago

Yeah a bit of googling found it was taking infrared.

[–]iphonephotog 2 points3 points ago

It was taken with an infrared camera and touched up later.

[–]sensors 1 point2 points ago

It's not skye, and it's been colour filtered.

[–]Hara-Kiri 0 points1 point ago

Britain isn't a magical world, everything here is normal coloured too!

[–]artmjsdlfgkjts 1 point2 points ago

I'm going to the Isle of Skye next week!

[–]youRFate 0 points1 point ago

the colors have been changed. You can see that at the edged of the water. The green mossy water is purple there. Also the substitution of green with purple has turned the murky water teal. This image has been reposted here numerous times and every time has been identified as fake.

[–]Skizzeria 0 points1 point ago

As someone who's name is Skye, I really love pictures like this. My mom named me Skye cause of how beautiful she said the Isle of Skye was. Sadly, I've never been. :(

[–]kingg2 0 points1 point ago

Looks like something from Farscape.

[–]RosieJo 0 points1 point ago

Speed bonny boat like a bird on the wing, onward the sailors cry. Carry the lad, that's born to be king, over the sea to Skye. load the wind howls. Loud the waves roar... Thunderclaps rend the air. Baffled the foe, stand by the shore, follow they do no dare. Speed bonny boat like a bird on the wing... onward the sailors cry. Carry the lad that's born to be king, over the sea to Skye.

[–]GingerRedbush 0 points1 point ago

This is stunning....

[–]mkaka1 0 points1 point ago

Didn't look like that in Prometheus.

[–]FuckYouAndYourMarker 0 points1 point ago

I have seen this picture doezens of times during this YEAR. =.=

[–]the_narwhal_baconer 0 points1 point ago

That's right, Scotland exists. Britain isn't just England, it's Scotland too.

It's places like this that make me proud to be Scottish.

Sorry, I just think we need to be more recognized. :(

[–]dudeguy2 0 points1 point ago

Nice, I love purple trees ;)

[–]gawright87 0 points1 point ago

[–]JdoubleE5000 0 points1 point ago

One of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

[–]randorolian 0 points1 point ago

No way. I live in Scotland and its never that bright anywhere here.

[–]18-24-61-B-17-17-4 0 points1 point ago

I would love to have a glass of Talisker there...

[–]hgIsAnElement 0 points1 point ago

Colour notwisthstanding, I'm sure this isn't Skye. I used to live there (north of Portree) and have been swimming in said pools, which are ball-achingly cold. See BermudaCakes picture below for what one of the most accessible pools looks like.

[–]TexasThrowDown 0 points1 point ago

For those wondering, the reason the vegetation is purple is because of the infrared sensor used to capture the image. The way this works is that the infrared band is loaded into a specific color gun since human beings cannot (naturally) see the infrared wavelength.

This image has the IR band loaded into the magenta color gun causing the vegetation to appear magenta (magenta, cyan, and yellow are typically used for light capture; that or red green and blue). Because water absorbs infrared energy very easily, the water appears cyan/green in color (if magenta is absorbed from a MCY color gun, then only C and Y remain leaving a green hew).

Now you know!

Edit: Thinking about it, there could also be a number of other combinations of bands that could have been loaded into the guns but that was my first guess.

[–]Pondaq 0 points1 point ago

i don't know if anyone here's taken acid, but uhhhh... yeeeee. this is it

[–]gjamison 0 points1 point ago

That's what Talisker tastes like :)

[–]StickyBunz1 0 points1 point ago

Repost.

[–]PoeticalArt 0 points1 point ago

My family is descended from about 20 miles from there, originally.

[–]inshead 0 points1 point ago

Can you descend from somewhere unorginally?

[–]PoeticalArt 0 points1 point ago

Your question confuses me. Isn't original an opinion in some cases? I could say my family descended from the last city we lived in, technically.

[–]inshead 0 points1 point ago

Well yes I guess we could all say something similar about our heritage. It just came across to me as oddly worded is all.

[–]PoeticalArt 0 points1 point ago

I apologize, sir or madame.

[–]Darkscryber 0 points1 point ago

Here's a picture of the Fairy Glenn about half a kilometer from Armadale Pier. Not much from the picture, it was from the time when we had to wait 24 hours to get our pictures and it costed 10$ for each 24 shots..

[–]CroceaMors 0 points1 point ago

I don't know the place near Armadale, but the Fairy Glen near Uig on Skye is worth a visit. Amazing hillock formations in a beautiful deserted landscape. Apparently, the weird little pagoda shaped hills are the result of natural erosion, though the locals say they are the final resting places of fairy chieftains, or something. http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/1_7/1_7_4l.JPG

[–]OmegaXXIII 0 points1 point ago

(doesn't care if it's real or fake: dl's it and puts it in revolving backgrounds folder that also contains many other make-believe things from video games)

[–]inshead 0 points1 point ago

Looks like I have my next destination.

[–]L1ttl3J1m 0 points1 point ago

Blue water?

I see green water around the shoreline where it's not all white from reflecting the sky, but no blue.

My colour blindness must be getting worse...much worse...

[–]SkyBS 0 points1 point ago

I blame this place for why my name is always spelled wrong.

[–]purplezebra98 0 points1 point ago

Wow.. Just wow.

[–]Dorfus 0 points1 point ago

How has a movie NOT filmed there yet!?!

[–]Kowalski416 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that where "Prometheus" began?

[–]trudysays 0 points1 point ago

This is all over pintrest

[–]Jsemps 0 points1 point ago

That's where my family comes from!

[–]greenfrogs42 0 points1 point ago

Omg, that is Freakin awesome. I so want to go there.

[–]MAD_HAMMISH 0 points1 point ago

Filtered picture, sorry but trees aren't purple.

[–]no_pants 0 points1 point ago

Hey look it's that really fake looking picture of the purple trees that pops up every fucking week on Reddit. sweet man, thanks for sharing again for the 1 billionth time.

[–]YodaMush -1 points0 points ago

THEY HAVE PURPLE TREES?!?!?!

(jk)

[–]NorthernSpankMonkey -1 points0 points ago

Oh hue!

[–]Link3693 -1 points0 points ago

Fairy pools? Now I just need some bottles to catch all the fairies with!
