    My fiancee started out with relaxed hair. Last year she made the decision to transition back to natural. Now that the transition is over, I can't tell you how fantastic it is to actually be allowed to touch her hair or dunk her in the swimming pool.

    She's the first black woman I've ever dated. Very early in the relationship I made the mistake of dunking her in the pool. That was a bad bad bad day.

    A black woman's hair is an emotional danger-zone. It's also time intensive and expensive in its upkeep. Though you may approach her with questions about it, do so with trepidation and tact. She may not want to talk about. Do not touch it without permission.

    Believe it or not, sometimes it's not actually her hair. There are wigs and extensions which may be woven into her natural hair. Good wigs can cost thousands of dollars.

    She may also have her hair relaxed (straightened chemically). This process is repeated every few weeks. It can cost more than $100 per visit to the hair-stylist.

    At some point in the relationship, you may find yourself taking over the payments for the upkeep of that hair. Don't say I didn't warn you.

    Nerdy analogy: Her hair is the motherboard of a very very expensive computer. Keep water away from it, do not touch without a good grounding, and permission of the owner.

      black hair is drier and more course than white hair. it doesn't produce as much oil. so getting it wet makes it very difficult to manage and makes it tangle and fro

      Nope. It's mostly because many black women get their hair 'done', i.e. they get extensions, weaves, perms, and all sorts of other chemical treatments that will get seriously messed up if it comes into contact with water.

      Yeah, but that's not really why at all.

      If your hair is chemically straightened (what is called a perm), getting your hair wet doesn't make it "fro" or tangle at all. The chemicals prevent it from "fro-ing", the tangling part just depends on the last time you had a perm.

      Typically the process of getting wet straight hair to be dry straight hair and presentable isn't always as easy as just blow drying it or letting it air dry. For it to have some volume and not be all straggly at the ends, you have to get it in rollers and sit under a dry then you might have to oil your scalp and wrap it up.

      Who the heck wants to have to go through that in the middle of the week/day/whatever?

      my girlfriend went through more trouble to keep her hair dry when there was nothing in it than with extensions and such. and we had a discussion once or twice about the difference between our hair types. water messes with untreated hair as well

          My ex used to get her hair chemically relaxed every other month and used some weird stuff in her hair to keep it moisturised. The damn stuff made me sneeze. Better than fake hair that falls out.

In Brazil and Caribbean hispanic countries/regions there are significantly more people of mixed African/European descent, while conversely in mainland South America there are more people with mixed Native descent
