The wikipedia page for this illusion has a clarifying gif.

[–]Ihateyourdick 89 points90 points ago

Good news guys, I solved that screwy missing square puzzle. Unfortunately I seem to have summoned Yog-Sothoth in the process; he does not seem pleased.

That goddamn impossible geometry.

He shared a spam link that looks like an ordinary imgur link, like this.

Thank you for making sure I get some sleep tonight.

I was thinking that they hadn't been cut up and aligned to correctly represent the equality. The gif confirmed my suspicions.

For a visual representation of the missing 1 I made back for 4chan some time ago.

is better than wikipedia one

[–]d9-thc 1 point2 points ago

OP (of the gif) should release it to Commons and update the wiki article with it.

[–]zetim 0 points1 point ago

Go for it. May this thread be my deceleration of this gif being released to the commons.

[–]somedudeinlosangeles 3 points4 points ago

Bravo.

My pleasure. Sweet mathematically-sound dreams.

[–]lolsail 32 points33 points ago

The lines on the main diagonal in the second shape leave a bit of space which isn't obvious due to the finite thickness of the shapes edges in the graphic.

Play with this; it'll be much more obvious this time.

[–]Undeniablu 2 points3 points ago

Ahh ha. Its another trick to get me to install Java VM 2!!!

[–]dannyXC[S] 1 point2 points ago

Aha! I saw that in the animation, but I thought that the space between the two curved lines was not enough area to a square unit (I just though it was the a graphical error in the animation). Cool, thanks for the explanation! :]

[–]Askalotl 55 points56 points ago

Fibonacci Bamboozlement!

[–]NathanA01 17 points18 points ago

This is the only excited remark I will ever use again in my life. Mostly.

[–]Askalotl 8 points9 points ago

It's a thing! Apparently.

[–]NathanA01 4 points5 points ago

Day = made.

[–]mbooshay 0 points1 point ago

or does day = night?

[–]Lillipout 6 points7 points ago

This statement can only be followed by a popped monocle.

[–]JohnAbruzzi 7 points8 points ago

Did someone say Fibonacci?

[–]dougie1107 7 points8 points ago

That's the son of a bitch that fingered Abruzzi.

:D

[–]wellthatsjusthurtful 72 points73 points ago

the lines are not strait, you don't see it, but when you rearrange the shapes, these slightly convex and concave lines allow to steal a square from outer space.

[–]jonathanrdt 0 points1 point ago

Stealing from outer space?? Outrageous! The nerve of some people...

[–]fruitylips 14 points15 points ago

My high school geometry teacher showed one of these on the 1st day of class in 10th grade (way back in 1985).

Her point was that you cannot ever rely on a drawing of a geometric idea. You have to actually work out the math knowing the angles and actual side lengths. If you ever tried to do it in class, she wouldn't even look at your work and just mark it wrong.

[–]faaaack 14 points15 points ago

This is the answer, kids. No homework tonight, but you have a test on Friday.

[–]Rithe 1 point2 points ago

Um, only if you are using a pencil and paper or something. Do it on the computer in Autocad and you can visibly see the gap

[–]TheOldBean 1 point2 points ago

Yes because most math classes, especially in 1985, had computers with autocad.

[–]jag213 8 points9 points ago

Fake math. Visually it looks right but there is 1 square missing due to overlap/tiny spaces

[–]eric_the_pyles 32 points33 points ago

This should help: http://i.imgur.com/XwcUR.png

[–]ChocolateStorm 13 points14 points ago

That just makes me MORE confused!!!!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

The quadrilaterals don't fit exactly with the triangles to make a rectangle. There is a little bit of space in between, but the gif just smushes the shapes together and ignores that to trick us.

[–]DaisyDoozer 5 points6 points ago

Sorcery!

[–]Clit_Commander 6 points7 points ago

In other terms: Bullshit!

[–]JonathanWarner 5 points6 points ago

The slope of the angle that cuts the triangles is 3:13 while the slope for the other shapes is 2:6. Similar enough for a low quality .gif but if it were slightly higher resolution you would be able to see the gap in the middle.

[–]severon 3 points4 points ago

Notice how the line bulges in the middle? They are cheating and losing a square in the middle of that. Those cuts dont like up perfectly like that.

[–]yourfacelikesme 2 points3 points ago

TRANSFORMSQUARES. RECTANGLES IN DISGUISE.

[–]linux_add 6 points7 points ago

64 = 65, for extremely large values of 64

[–]Listerdude 2 points3 points ago

You only need a slight curve in the diagonal.

[–]MBSquared 2 points3 points ago

At the end of the gif, notice how the top right parts don't match. It's uneven. Bunk science.

[–]Mopar_Madness 2 points3 points ago

When they broke the square up, they made 2 triangles with a 3/8 slope and 2 with a 2/5 slope. 3/8 and 2/5 are fairly similar, but not exact. This means the rectangle with the "65" area has some holes in it, and the area of the holes combined is 1.

[–]Alt0173 2 points3 points ago

The slopes don't match. You have a sliver missing, which amounts to 1 square block.

[–]scorntwist 4 points5 points ago

I think what everybody is getting at is 'Witchcraft'

[–]throawawayaccnt 1 point2 points ago

The triangles' hypotenuse has a slope of 8/3, or 2.666666.... and the four-sided shape's angled side has a slope of 5/2, or 2.5, so in real life they wouldn't fit together. They change the slope of the lines ever so slightly during the animation to get one extra square of area.

[–]ehitch -3 points-2 points ago

but where does the extra box come from!!! They use the same lines to create a similar image. Where do the new lines come from to create an additional box?

[–]DrQuailMan 1 point2 points ago

check the slopes. 2/5 != 3/8

[–]mbleslie 1 point2 points ago

Deception!

[–]gutsboof 1 point2 points ago

'Math' not even once.

[–]Undeniablu 1 point2 points ago

Sorry. I can't read Mexican.

[–]miss-sawa 1 point2 points ago

just another morning in China's elementary schools.

[–]Smiley007 0 points1 point ago

If im not mistaken, one of the shapes had a line that consisted of more squares. One more in particular. When changed around it was exposed and allowed for an extra square to be added... Wait its not perimeter is it. Crap

[–]saucierlol 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was a mathematical mystery at first, turns out it's just a stupid optical illusion, nothing to see here..

As soon as I saw it was math I gave up. I feel like I'm back in high school.

[–]Listerdude -1 points0 points ago

I could but I'd have to kill you.
