$10 says George Takai shares this on Facebook in 2 weeks!

[–]Major_halil 1 point2 points ago

you're on

[–]Mastrik 1 point2 points ago

Shit, I give him less than a week, he usually posts (reposts?) within a couple of days after hitting the front page of reddit a few times.

[–]minniemousz 25 points26 points ago

Gonna go ahead and state the obvious, it's losing its velvet...

[–]Excentinel 15 points16 points ago

You forgot to mention that all antlered animals go through that every year.

[–]Mayo07J 4 points5 points ago

Wow, some people on Reddit do know what they're talking about rather than assuming.

[–]a4moondoggy 2 points3 points ago

What Reddit is this? I clicked and expected the top post with something like "omg i feel so bad for the deer!" with 300 upvotes.

[–]IAmAnObvioustrollAMA 2 points3 points ago

Omg i feel so bad for the deer!!! Upvote away!

[–]gliscameria 0 points1 point ago

I assume you're both right!

[–]99trumpets 0 points1 point ago

aka all deer.*

(just in case anybody doesn't know that all antlered animals are deer. Including moose, caribou and elk)

*except chinese water deer, of course. The freaks.

[–]scgoodolboy 1 point2 points ago

I am glad I'm not the only one here that realized what was going on. As a hunter it looks like someone missed him by just a couple days. LOL He would have looked great in velvet.

[–]Bennyboy1337 0 points1 point ago

I was going to say the same thing.

[–]irockthecatbox 6 points7 points ago

It's also shedding its velvet. Nothing was harmed in the taking of this photo.

[–]Imperial-legion 16 points17 points ago

Rudolph the red nosed Paindeer. AMIRIGHT GUYS AMIRIGHT

[–]willrd88[S] 3 points4 points ago

Their blood ran red, like his nose

[–]el_bastardo515 0 points1 point ago

Look up the song "Red Snow" by Psychostick. Pretty much exactly about this.

[–]CallMeAnEngineer 4 points5 points ago

You do understand that the deer is simply shedding velvet from it's horns, right? It happens when their horns mature, and the velvet must be rubbed off so the horns become hard, so it can fight other bucks over breeding rights to a mate.

[–]99trumpets 1 point2 points ago

Pedantic biologist here: The proper term is antlers, not horns.

(Horns are what cows/sheep/antelope have. Horns are unbranched, are never shed, grow from the base rather than the tip, and never have a velvet covering. Instead they are covered with a permanent hard layer of keratin).

Terminology aside, everything else you said is right.

[–]CallMeAnEngineer 1 point2 points ago

Ah, I feel kinda stupid now that I didn't put antlers. I'm no biologist, I'm just an outdoorsman. Thanks for clearing that up, 99trumpets!

[–]99trumpets 1 point2 points ago

no prob! Hunters tend to call everything "horns" so you are not alone. Once you look at them biologically though, antlers & horns are very different.

The antler cycle is flat out bizarre when you think about it- basically a controlled bone tumor (it's actually a crazed healing response - it is trying to heal the wound left from the previous antler falling off). Then the bone actually DIES when you give it testosterone. Then the deer is walking around with dead bone attached directly to the living bone of the skull, yet somehow its skull doesn't go necrotic. Then the damn thing FALLS OFF when testo drops - pounds and pounds of calcium wasted. Then the deer has to walk around looking for other fallen antlers, bones, and even turtles to gnaw on to get enough calcium to build the next set. crazy.

(I used to study deer and I still have this totally nerdy fondness for antlers)

[–]CallMeAnEngineer 1 point2 points ago

I agree completely, as I myself have always found antlers to be bizzare. I mean, since they use so much calcium to grow antlers, one would think that evolution would have made it so they remain with the buck for its lifetime. Another thing, is that the deer around here (WV) spend a lot of time in thick brush, and I always wondered how they moved so swiftly through it without the twin anchors attached to their skull getting them stuck.

[–]Tovora -1 points0 points ago

I didn't, we don't have Deer here.

[–]PepNYC -1 points0 points ago

Dats gross when they shed. Does look like they tore the guts out of some unsuspecting hunter though. haha.

[–]hi_blue 2 points3 points ago

Not every picture submitted to r/pics should become a meme.

[–]ObeseMoreece 3 points4 points ago

This deer has killed many a direwolf.

[–]duckduckmooses 1 point2 points ago

Fallow deer, guys. Fallow deer.

[–]352399 1 point2 points ago

Wow, another stunning example of reddit production-line humor. I can't wait till tomorrows random ass picture gets turned into a forced meme!

[–]DPgetsrad 5 points6 points ago

That's a young deer, not a raindeer.

[–]deege515 21 points22 points ago

That's a partlycloudydeer, not a raindeer.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

You can tell by the spots on the fur. My favourite deer is by far sunshinedeer. But stormdeer is a close second...

[–]Bigmarsh96 0 points1 point ago

Reindeer

[–]willrd88[S] 10 points11 points ago

Oh. We're taking memes serious now? I didn't get that memo.

[–]mediocre_lawstudent 3 points4 points ago

meme-o

[–]cypherreddit 4 points5 points ago

[–]sneezybees 1 point2 points ago

Just because it has spots doesn't mean it's young. You're probably thinking of juvenile white-tailed deer. It wouldn't have antlers like that.

[–]fretsurfer12 3 points4 points ago

I think it's an axis deer

[–]duckduckmooses -1 points0 points ago

fallow deer.

Not sure why Axis is getting upvotes. This is an Axis deer. Characterized by a much stockier body, darker fur, a mean looking appearance and a large solid white patch at the throat.

[–]willrd88[S] -1 points0 points ago

Found this under "fallow deer buck" in Google images. The tines or more flat and plated looking. http://www.worldofstock.com/slides/NAN7155.jpg

[–]duckduckmooses -1 points0 points ago

In an older deer they are. This one is younger and still developing.

[–]fretsurfer12 -2 points-1 points ago

Yeah sorry I realized it wasnt an axis. Thanks

[–]estevato 1 point2 points ago

Its an axis deer. they keep there spots.

[–]nomagneticmonopoles 0 points1 point ago

Well, it's close to what I assume we're all thinking of: http://techaddictionblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/rudolph-red-nosed-reindeer-001.jpg

[–]BroomIsWorking -1 points0 points ago

Wow. Two points of fail in one short sentence.

[–]fretsurfer12 -2 points-1 points ago

Nope, nevermind, too many points...is it a whitetail? Massive antlers for a young one

[–]duckduckmooses -1 points0 points ago

Fallow deer.

[–]thatisRON 4 points5 points ago

"They wouldn't let me join in their reindeer games"

Something something Hunger Games...

I'm not in a meme-making mood, alright???

[–]doritos1347 -1 points0 points ago

They wouldn't let me join their reindeer games

Sowe played hunger games instead

[–]doritos1347 -1 points0 points ago

*So we. Dump phone

[–]FirmOrange 1 point2 points ago

I'm sad to say that this meme will not be up and coming

[–]psychroclasm 7 points8 points ago

It would probably work if nobody knew about antler velvet.

[–]Thtb 1 point2 points ago

TIL: Redditors don't know how deers work.

[–]Sopps -1 points0 points ago

Maybe some people just enjoy the joke, you think of that?

[–]Stuarrt 1 point2 points ago

False. That is not a reindeer

[–]nomagneticmonopoles 0 points1 point ago

[–]Mustaka 0 points1 point ago

This version of the image was photo shopped. I found the original.

[–]reindeer73 0 points1 point ago

As a reindeer, this amuses me.

[–]VPinecone 0 points1 point ago

Too many revenge memes... :/

[–]hiddenbutobvious 0 points1 point ago

" I am NOT a Tanuki, I am a REINDEER!"

[–]CaptAlias 0 points1 point ago

It was deer hunting season. Was.

See: Axis deer. Fallow deer.

[–]99trumpets 0 points1 point ago

Several of the European & Asian species keep the spots lifelong.

[–]redops47 0 points1 point ago

should have saved that for christmas for 20x the karma dude xD

[–]willrd88[S] 1 point2 points ago

Don't worry. Someone will repost it around that time.

[–]redops47 -1 points0 points ago

reposts are ok, as long as they are beyond relevant

[–]willrd88[S] -1 points0 points ago

I'll repost it around that time after everyone has forgot about it

[–]redops47 0 points1 point ago

karmadecay never forgets

[–]tromboner378 -1 points0 points ago

[–]Noctarchy -2 points-1 points ago

Just smashing, ol' chap, just smashing.

[–]Vulturas -2 points-1 points ago
