http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/lacingmethods.htm

The actual site it's from. I recommend the helix one, it looks nice and it is the fastest to tighten. But it can result in it pulling on one side more than the other so it works better for tighter shoes.

[–]schiefer740[S] 4 points5 points ago

Thanks for the source! Should've looked for that myself...

My favorite is the hidden knot. You just have to get used to having your knot in your shoes.

[–]DJjoeyJ 3 points4 points ago

had the hidden knot on an old pair i used to have. only had to retie them once in two years of use. worked and looked great

[–]Broken_S_Key 2 points3 points ago

slightly unrelated:

i wore the helix for 2 days on a pair of shoes i brought back into use.

they saw a lot of action and the sides were quite worn. the uneven pull was the straw that broke the camels back and one of the creases on the side split. now theres a 1/4 - 1/2 inch hole on the side. now theyre only going to be used when im matching them to something.

these are the shoes.

[–]Tryghul 2 points3 points ago

Helix is a godsend for boots. My beckmans are a bit hard to tighten up and loosen with the waxed lace. Switched to it as soon as I saw somebody post about that website, and it made the breaking in period a whole lot more manageable.

[–]fiftypoints 0 points1 point ago

I'm in the Air Force and that's how they force teach you to lace your boots in Basic.

[–]SheeEttin 1 point2 points ago

How long ago? I went through a few months back and everything had to be laced almost like this. The only difference is that on the next-to-bottom eyelets, the laces come out instead of go in.

[–]fiftypoints 0 points1 point ago

I think with the way the GI eyelets are that works out to about the same lacing, with the bottom two eyelets like you mentioned.

[–]studder 0 points1 point ago

I've heard that this type of lacing is preferred in that it allows a knife to be run quickly and easily down the outside of the tongue of the boot should the boot become stuck and you need to extricate your foot quickly. Might be a myth as I don't remember exactly where I heard it but YMMV.

[–]fiftypoints 1 point2 points ago

That's an important concern, but I think most lacings accommodate for that.

[–]studder 1 point2 points ago

True, I got about halfway through that post and realized there's a 50/50 chance I'm right or wrong. I put in too much effort at that point and put out the warning lest I be caught full of shit.

Edit: The army uses the ladder method since it allows medics to cut through only one set of laces per row. Fuck yes. Saucey sauce

The premise was if a medic needed to get to your foot, he only had to cust up one set of laces per row. You also only had to tighten and tuck one lace end. Can't say it gave great ankle support though.

Edit: Who's the liar now yurps?

[–]yurps 0 points1 point ago

Heh, you said "Edit:", but there's no star, so you're a liar, naturally.

[–]studder 0 points1 point ago

Well this is awkward now...

[–]yurps 1 point2 points ago

This behavior was expected from a liar such as yourself. Nonetheless, well played, studder, well played.

[–]amartz 2 points3 points ago

Ian's site! I haven't visite it in years! I don't always wear shoes with laces, but when I do, I use the Ian Knot.

[–]Jonno_FTW 0 points1 point ago

I bought his iPhone app, probably one of the best apps for when you're bored on a train and have nothing better to do than fiddle around with your shoe laces!

[–]starbuxed 0 points1 point ago

I have a book called laces. I just had to get it.

[–]uniqlooo 117 points118 points ago

the majority of these are used by preteen girls in junior high on their etnies skate shoes.

k. for your dress shoes h. for your other shoes

[–]checherbud 26 points27 points ago

Yeah seriously. I feel like this image would be of infinite value if it was on the wall of a high school hallway or on the inside of a journey's footware store.

[–]AllezVite 8 points9 points ago

A. For your paratrooper 'jump boots.' it's a tradition in some units and specific color guards.

[–]itsSparkky 0 points1 point ago

Actually a lot of these have military origins.

Several others actually can alter the fit of the shoe. I and G and F for example will alter how the shoe fits and can be really useful for some people.

Or your could be a pretentious twat like many people on this thread... that works too :)

[–]AllezVite 1 point2 points ago

I'm sorry if I came across as a twat. I was simply trying to contribute to this thread. My comment was based on experience that I had while on a color guard. We were permitted to wear boots that had white ladder laces in places of standard Bates dress shoes that one would normally wear with blues. Again, my apologies.

[–]itsSparkky 0 points1 point ago

No, it wasn't you I was getting at... I tried really hard to word it without saying Uniqloo is a twat.

[–]AllezVite 0 points1 point ago

I figured this literally moments after submission. My appologies friend.

[–]itsSparkky 1 point2 points ago

Canadian?

[–]AllezVite 1 point2 points ago

I wish. I'm just an average Floridian, or a Tampon to be specific.

[–]itsSparkky 0 points1 point ago

Heh weird.

Generally Canadians are the only people who apologize for misunderstanding somebody, even though they were apologizing for something they didn't do in the first place.

I would know, I get bumped into by people all the time and say sorry.

[–]AllezVite 1 point2 points ago

Better safe than sorry. Wait. Umm, better sorry and safe than sorry? Hmm... I need a new saying.

[–]teeksteeks 3 points4 points ago

Well that's good to hear. I've need doing H for a while with my regular shoes and was curious what others thought about that style.

[–]astronoob 2 points3 points ago

I use A. for my work boots.

[–]figpetus 1 point2 points ago

Try lacing your normal shoes with the ladder lacing, I think it may just blow your mind.

[–]T-rex_with_a_gun 1 point2 points ago

for H, where is the knot?

[–]Bit_Chewy 4 points5 points ago

Fucking fascist. I bet you wear a suit to work.

[–]SenorFish 1 point2 points ago

time to repost and reap the karma from 9gag. they have karma right?

[–]Todomanna 4 points5 points ago

The exchange rate sucks, though.

[–]bacon_cake 1 point2 points ago

A hidden knot on dress shoes?

[–]antifolkhero -1 points0 points ago

Totally. I only go with checkerboard on my oxfords.

[–]zaronius 6 points7 points ago

The most important variation is missing: straight on top and crossed on bottom (for oxford dress shoes). This is useless

[–]OrangeWool 0 points1 point ago

Any link for that?

[–]zaronius 4 points5 points ago

Sure, I guess it's called Straight European Lacing. It looks complicated but it's not. The point is to have straight on top and make the tension underneath as even as possible. Also, it doesn't matter how many eyelets you have.

http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/straighteuropeanlacing.htm

[–]itsSparkky 0 points1 point ago

Except several of these have very sound uses aside from "looking different"

Several of these have military origins, and can also be used to make slight adjustments to the fit of the shoe.

[–]zaronius 0 points1 point ago

Sure. But they still missed the most important one

[–]xXSJADOo 6 points7 points ago

h is the only one i have ever used. and its going to stay that way.

[–]nickm717 0 points1 point ago

Can you explain how H. works. Where do you tie or what do you do with the extra ends?

[–]JohnoTheFoolish 0 points1 point ago

You tie on one side at the top and tuck the knot and ends into the side of your shoe so that it is hidden.

[–]Keithinator 2 points3 points ago

So what the heck are my Vans? (Just a mess?)

All the other shoes I actually wear don't have laces (at least 80% of the time I wear pink/black Vans Classics)

[–]hamtoucher 6 points7 points ago

Those are H on the diagram, commonly known as "the proper way of lacing shoes"......

[–]Keithinator 0 points1 point ago

Welp, my brains clearly not working today... I thought H alternated which direction the top lace came from (and that that was the proper way to do it) or is that not actualy possible?

[–]r-r-roll 0 points1 point ago

They're H but on the top hole on either side the laces are going from inside to out instead of outside to in. It's a legitimate way of lacing your shoes, don't worry about it. Looks fine.-

[–]Knigel 2 points3 points ago

My shoelace tying guide:

  • Step 1 — fasten Velcro.

[–]Disco_Infiltrator 30 points31 points ago

This shit is stupid.

[–]ChemicalRascal 1 point2 points ago

What this guy said. All he knows, is all he knows.

[–]looksbadman 4 points5 points ago

and a repost of a repost of a repost of a repost

[–]newcomplaint 23 points24 points ago

Coming from a woman, please just lace your shoes like a normal person.

[–]Imumybuddy 5 points6 points ago

ITT No one who thinks it's suitable to have fun tying your shoes in interesting ways.

[–]justinm715 1 point2 points ago

It didn't even come to my mind that there was other ways to lace up these damn things. All but H are ridiculous.

[–]half_shark_alligator 2 points3 points ago

Most of these are extremely juvenile ways to tie your laces. In terms of looking mature and pulled together you should just tie your shoes normally. Only K, but usually I leave the top one (and only the top one, never 2) unlaced, and I just tie it there. I always thought it looked weird to lace them ALL the way up, as I have slim feet and it can make the shape of some shoes change a little too much.

[–]thissuitisblacknot 1 point2 points ago

Over under in and out that's what shoe tying is all about

[–]MaK_Ultra 0 points1 point ago

Mine cross in my shoes I wear with scrubs. Should I change it?

[–]Octopain 0 points1 point ago

Over under is the best. It makes it easier to tighten or loosen, plus I like the look.

[–]sturge2 0 points1 point ago

I went with the hidden knot for my Adidas Ciero Lo's

[–]rossberry 0 points1 point ago

This guide is older than time itself.

[–]Tyroneshoolaces 0 points1 point ago

Tie Your Own Shoolaces

[–]rbevans 0 points1 point ago

What the hell is this? This is far from handy unless your in highsc...actually middle school.

[–]martin8768 0 points1 point ago

this is shit

[–]steinman17 0 points1 point ago

I did the left middle one, it sucks at tightening the middle of the shoe.

[–]kast13 0 points1 point ago

Wow, how this got into male fashion advice is beyond me..

[–]Sensitivity 0 points1 point ago

I think K looks the slickest.

[–]staaan1 0 points1 point ago

No notes on actually tying, just lacing. Just sayin...

[–]fatlace 0 points1 point ago

I haven't seen this since 2003.

[–]MikeGayner 0 points1 point ago

People on here still need help tying their shoes?

[–]Negoblle2 0 points1 point ago

I've been using the N. "Lattice" on every pair of shoes i've owned for the past few years. I actually get tons of compliments on them, but I understand why many redditors think they're stupid. I can upload pics if anyone wants to see them on a real shoe?

[–]A-Type -2 points-1 points ago

Am I the only one who does insides?

[–]absolutsyd 0 points1 point ago

Exactly how my Vans are laced. I think it looks great myself.

[–]ibewritegood -2 points-1 points ago

I'm going to enjoy trying all these now. I'll be up for hours. Thank you.

[–]rkwhitney -1 points0 points ago

I use O on my converse, and have never tried most of the others
