You better sell it for at least 17.6470588235294% more than you paid.

[–]JDUB316 1 point2 points ago

why not 15%?

[–]cuombajj 12 points13 points ago

if you buy it for x and sell it for y, then you will break even when y - 0.15y = x.

0.85y=x

y=x/0.85

y=1.176... * x

therefore the amount you need to add to the price of x in order to break even is 17.647... %

[–]JDUB316 7 points8 points ago

ah, magic ratios. Got it.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

i don't think you've got it... magic ratios rofl

[–]Panjab 0 points1 point ago

Thats the joke

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

no, no its not

[–]xtertristl 0 points1 point ago

Hmm so I buy it for 100 gold then I have to sell it for 15% +1g to make a profit 116g I get 101 gold back from blizzard less the 100 I spent equals 1g profit. you need to remember as the buyer you paid the full price and x doesn't equal .85y it's the full 100%

[–]cuombajj 0 points1 point ago

Nope, if you list your item for 116g you are only going to get 99g back (really 98.6g but it gets rounded I think?). So instead of gaining 1g you are going to lose 1g.

Just think of it like you think of any other tax. If I want to spend $1000 for rent per month on my apartment, and the government takes 30% in taxes, is it going to be good enough to earn $1000 + 30% = $1300? Nope, you are going to be $90 short. Just some basic math.

[–]mnmleon 6 points7 points ago

You would love eve

[–]yarnage 0 points1 point ago

I used the play EVE and I believe this is the reason why I like the AH.

[–]b0red 3 points4 points ago

Typical scenario, buys item, gets excited. Sees that it does less damage than my current item based on the calculations.

This was before I started using the dps calcs...

[–]bongsdontkill 5 points6 points ago

yay, diablo 3, a game that revolves soley around using their stupid AH.

[–]DaGarbageMan 2 points3 points ago

only when you reach inferno

[–]bongsdontkill 0 points1 point ago

which takes all of 3 days playtime.

[–]DaGarbageMan 1 point2 points ago

To some, "all of 3 days" is a lot of time spent on Diablo

[–]MrWinks -3 points-2 points ago

lol, softcore problems. I keep reading how you guys are soooo bored. Jesus. Seriously, step it up.

[–]DaGarbageMan 0 points1 point ago

No thanks, I don't feel like wasting hours of my life just to be crushed when I die to some exploding mob. I learned that lesson in D2

[–]MrWinks 0 points1 point ago

Then save gear. Getting to 60 doesn't take very long. We have this shit figured out. It's a totally different game.

[–]iScreme -1 points0 points ago

When you die to server lag or some other "Stopped moving 15 yards back then ported accross the screen as a graveyard" glitch, I'll be looking for your tears so I can use 'em as lube when I fuck your poodle.

[–]MrWinks 0 points1 point ago

My friend, my main's name is VoidIX. Death is a part of life. And it's very enjoyable when you take the game more seriously. Just like in a video game dying and repeating the level; you improve at it. I can power level to 38 in four or five hours with a friend.

When you die to bullshit, you just lose the gear on you. You save all the old gear you wore to level, and you give that to an alt and repeat. It's real fucking easy, and way more enjoyable.

The auction house is not inflated to a burning pile of shit, too (the way I hear it from you all)

[–]iScreme 0 points1 point ago

And the thought of dying to a stupid glitch or a wee bit of lag makes it all not worth it... I die to these kind of things in SC enough as it is to know that I wouldn't last in HC at any level.

If they allowed me to play SP then sure.

[–]MrWinks 1 point2 points ago

I have not died once to it. If I did I would get upset, but would be back at it within a day or two. Bullshit happens. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you get over it. If you're a musician and fuck up a song because of something like, idk, an earthquake or fire alarm or something, well, what're you gonna do? Start over and shrug it off.

Try it.

Shhhhh. Just do it.

[–]iScreme 0 points1 point ago

...If you're a dentist and you fuck up a tooth, you can just like, oh idk shrug it off and keep going I guess....

Just mocking your bad comparison to a musician ;) (hard to even notice when a musician fucks up while they're on stage... unless you're a vocalist... fuck vocalists though. specifically Avril.)

[–]MrWinks 1 point2 points ago

Dude, hardcore death only affects you. Ruining someone's tooth professionally is not comparable.

[–]xylyze 0 points1 point ago

Not really, you can always use the chat to buy or sell items, but the AH is more convenient.

[–]Slinger17 1 point2 points ago

Imagine my excitement when I found two 500+ LoH amulets for 6000 and 7000, then resold them for 400,000 and 700,000. AH life was very good that week

[–]Recyclebin1417 0 points1 point ago

How do you compete with all the AH Bots? :(

I have never found a good deal.

[–]fuLc 0 points1 point ago

You gotta know the markets. Pick a set of attributes and check them often over a week or so. You'll see a pattern and quickly see the deals.

[–]Kilockel 0 points1 point ago

When you watch the auction house long enough it isn't hard to find good deals.

I don't know about the AH bots you're talking about, (and honestly don't think you do either) but I am able to find good deals on the AH every hour. At least SOMETHING that turns a profit, or is underpriced and useful.

Maybe you aren't paying enough attention?

[–]skysignor -2 points-1 points ago

No kidding, I find something to resell for more money almost every single day. If you ask really nice, I'll tell you the trick to finding them... Okay it's not really a trick, it's just oommon sense lol

[–]p0gmoth0in 0 points1 point ago

do share.

[–]Striker654 0 points1 point ago

You sell to the bots. They love gold find with pickup radius. People occasionally don't price at the right amount and you can get lucky and buy it before a bot does

[–]DeepRoast 0 points1 point ago

Supply and demand sir. At least with the AH you don't have to pay for shipping and holding of the product. Guess you could say Blizz drop-ships it lulz.

[–]Kilockel 1 point2 points ago

Or, you could know that buying/selling loot on the AH isn't actually buying/selling the loot itself.

When you "buy" an item on the AH, what you're really doing is paying Blizzard for a license to use the item, after they have paid the seller for their license. The loot is never actually ours. :(

[–]Kilockel -2 points-1 points ago

You know this is against the ToS if you are doing it entirely on the AH for the sole purpose of profit. No flipping items on the AH.

Now, buy these items in trade chat and put them on the AH and you no longer have a problem.

EDIT: Before you continue to downvote, maybe you should actually read the Terms you agreed to when signing up to play this game. A quote and a link can be found in my reply to MrWinks showing that my statement is factual.

If you don't want to believe it, that's certainly your prerogative, but please do not spread misinformation or downvote the truth.

[–]MrWinks 0 points1 point ago

..can you quote, this, please, Mr. White Knight?

[–]Kilockel 0 points1 point ago

Certainly,

AH terms of use states:

11 - Restriction and conditions of use B. You will not: (iii) use the Auction Houses as an investment vehicle;

You can find that quote here.

Sorry I couldn't format that better. That text though does clearly indicate that "flipping" items on the AH is against the terms of service, since you would be using it as an investment vehicle.

Now, to say that the average player would get in trouble for something like that is pretty outlandish. You'd have to be making a lot of money for anyone to say anything to you, I think.

You can also get around that clause by buying an item, using it for a short while, then selling it. Yes, your ultimate goal is still profit, but it'd be much harder to argue on their end if you actually used the items you bought/sold.

[–]MrWinks 1 point2 points ago

This applies to real world gain, legally speaking. There is no established mentioning of this referring to 'in-game' investment, which implies this is real world only, as the default. This is not real world investment. Also, as a hardcore player with no RMAH, this would not apply to me.

[–]Kilockel -2 points-1 points ago

How is this not real world investment?

Gold, while not available for sale legally yet, has a real monetary value. Note also that the Terms of Use I supplied were for the basic AH, and I believe there is another more specific one for the RMAH. Why would that clause be arbitrarily included if it had no impact on the agreement?

Legally speaking, I think Blizzards lawyers did their homework. Just because the money isn't "real" at the time of buying/selling, doesn't mean it can't be used as an investment. Also, in the terms, they never state that it has to be for real world money, or in-game money. Which means it would have to encompass both.

Blizzard has made it completely crystal clear:

DO NOT USE THE AH TO INVEST

Why would you try to argue against that? You're one of the millions who agreed to that very thing.

EDIT: That's okay, you can continue to downvote the truth. Your disenchantment is mesmerizing.

[–]Dubzil 0 points1 point ago

How is this against the ToS?

[–]Kilockel 0 points1 point ago

Please read my comment to one of the other people who responded to this. I gave the quote from the ToS there.

For your convenience, you can find the ToS here.

Edit: Basically, using the AH as an "investment vehicle" is against the terms of service. Item flipping for the purpose of profit would be using the AH as an investment vehicle.

Easy ways around this are using the item you bought for a short while before selling it, or buying items in trade chat and selling them on the AH.

[–]ZooPants -1 points0 points ago

Bought a ring for 2 mill sold it for 7.5 mill also bought a pair of boots for 400k sold them for 3 million. Was a good day.

[–]ps_md 2 points3 points ago

What kind of stats are you looking for that are returning that much profit? All the items i see on the AH are crap mostly...

[–]MrWinks 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. I'm on hardcore and our market is VERY alive and uninflated.
