except.. those are metallic wrappers. Foiled again!!!

[–]Danster21 27 points28 points ago

actually X-ray can see right through the foil on Pokemon cards but the X-ray vision would also see right through the cards so there is no point in having X-ray vision anyway.

[–]MashTheClash 4 points5 points ago

I just wanted to say that. but IF you had an very sensitive x-ray scattering equipment you could eventual get some hints what cars you have. But thats too much effort.

[–]JaggedGorgeousWinter 2 points3 points ago

Would you be able to detect the presence of a foil card?

[–]Klarthy 2 points3 points ago

If the weight of a foil card is different than a normal card, you may be able to do this with a highly sensitive scale.

[–]DreNoob 2 points3 points ago

That used to be a legitimate strategy in picking packs. But now, most stores have the packs on watch all the time. Some won't even let you pick your own while they hold them.

[–]MashTheClash 1 point2 points ago

To get some information out of x-ray scattering your probe need to have kind of atom lattice. So i dont know exaxtly of what the foil consists but if you have the element, then you can look up if that elements builds up some lattice (or the chemical combination). And if you have elements with a higher atomic number this would be better). There plenty more analysing technics but many need to be "shot" on the direct surface or would destriy your cards : )

[–]Danster21 1 point2 points ago

wouldn't the X-ray scatter in the same way since the cards are made of the same material, everywhere.

[–]MashTheClash 0 points1 point ago

Yes but if you want to search after special cards (out of/with other material) you would see different scattering pictures if the difference in the materials is great enough (or better if one has a lattice and one not). So your result would be only "yes" or "no", if there is a special card in your package.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Technically speaking... Superman was able to control the level of his X-ray vision. Why couldnt the OP ?

I mean, if he could see through the wall, then super man would see through every building, person, and item.

[–]KristinnEs 0 points1 point ago

Superman! The leading cause of cancer in the modern world!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

LOL

[–]Danster21 0 points1 point ago

But remember, Superman is a comic book hero and you cant limit your X-rayness to see through certain things. it's X-ray.

[–]Danster21 5 points6 points ago

nice pun though.

[–]stealthesun 14 points15 points ago

One look at this photo and I remembered what opening a new package smelled like. GLORY.

[–]Marathon_Funk 1 point2 points ago

Whenever I would loose a tooth as a kid, the "tooth fairy" would leave me a booster pack under my pillow. I still remember that holographic Gengar... By the way, to any parents out there, how the fuck do you get that under a kids pillow? I've always been a light sleeper, yet every time I lost a tooth there would be something there! Mysteries of the universe...

[–]DONTUPVOTEPLZ 4 points5 points ago

lol idiot its magic. ever think of that?

[–]universalmind 1 point2 points ago

You only think you're a light sleeper!

[–]Apollo64 0 points1 point ago

If it's still popular in the coming years, I totally wanna put MtG Booster Packs under my kids pillow.

[–]Marathon_Funk 0 points1 point ago

Sooo much better than a dollar or two, one of my better memories from childhood.

[–]stealthesun 1 point2 points ago

Kid stays up with excitement as he will be receiving a gift for losing a tooth. Kid eventually passes out due to exhaustion and the once light sleeper turns into a near comatose heavy sleeper. Parents can now do as they please.

[–]SupermanV2 22 points23 points ago

Wow that took me back. It's amazing how such little things can make a kid so happy.

[–]potatoehorse 9 points10 points ago

About a year and a half ago my roommates and I decided to host a pokemon TCG tournament. Very casual. The snag is that only classic sets were allowed. We were putting together some premade decks for noobs to use if they wanted to give it a go. I also planned on giving the winner of the tournament a booster pack (it was base 2), but I ended up buying 3 or 4 packs to flesh out the premade decks. Me and a buddy carefully picked which ones to open and which would saved to be the prize.

Come the day of the tournament and it rains out and we have to cancel. We decide open the last booster pack. Fucking Charizard.

[–]TheStoof 4 points5 points ago

My dad thought it'd be neat to collect pokemon cards. I wanted all that I could get, and he bought himself a few packs...he got a holo charizard. I cried...on a black leather couch.

[–]ynglv 4 points5 points ago

My sister used to take me and my nephew to the mall. I'd always bug her to buy me some Pokemon cards. Well, one day I get a few packs and she buys my nephew a pack, too. He was maybe 1 or 2. Just buying him them to be cute and so he could have some, too! Like his uncle! I was 8 or 9.

He got a fuckin' holo Mewtwo. She wouldn't let me have it. I still hate her a little bit. щ(ಥДಥщ)

[–]psychroclasm 0 points1 point ago

Yes... happy. Not furious about all the energy cards. Not at all.

[–]Ikarus3426 11 points12 points ago

Holy shit. Seeing those made my heart jump with excitement. Nintendo, you sure do know how to get kids addicted for life.

[–]Beanbaker 1 point2 points ago

Did you ever end up eating that hat?

[–]Ikarus3426 0 points1 point ago

I'll eat a hat when Gabe does an AMA. And when that happens, you'll know, because reddit will implode.

[–]Beanbaker 0 points1 point ago

I look forward to that day.

[–]ZaneMasterX 1 point2 points ago

Why? Those cards are basically worthless. Let me explain why...They arent first edition.

I opened a first edition base booster a couple months ago that I paid $180 for. Didnt turn out as well as I hoped.

Base set 1st edition cards are where its at. I recently sold my 1st edition base booster set that included #1-16 all PSA 9s and duplicates of #2-16 mint condition non-graded. The set included 3 first edition charizards (1 psa 9 and two mint condition (probably psa 8-9)) for almost $5k.

Edit: Proof of my recently sold set.

[–]gones 0 points1 point ago

... Some of us just like to have fun. I got a 1st edition Charzard in one of my first booster packs (thankfully didn't realize it was worth anything at the time) and instead of hiding it away in a box, I took it around with the rest of my cards, played with it, dropped it, bent it, and watched as it ate up fire energies like nobody's business.

But even if it was in mint condition, there's no way I'd sell it - it's a part of my childhood, I love that thing.

And you say it's worthless? Fuck off.

[–]ZaneMasterX 0 points1 point ago

I didnt say it was worthless. That card is your card. It means something. I too have a story about pulling a 1st edition charizard from a booster pack I paid $4.50 for back in the day. Best day of my childhood. I carried it around with pride. I took care of it but I did use it to play with.

All I was saying is those booster packs arent considered valuable because they are base set 2.

[–]gones -1 points0 points ago

Alright, that's fair enough. But common, did you really care about 1st vs 2nd edition cards when you were a kid? All I cared about was getting pokemon with an awesome picture. Hell I learned Ken Sugimori's name when I was like 10

[–]IAmAtomato -1 points0 points ago

Mitsuhiro Arita for me!

[–]BelaKunn 0 points1 point ago

I actually did care about whether or not my cards were first edition when I was a kid. I tried to keep them safe in sleeves but still played them so they are in at least good condition. I've got them in a box in my bedroom still.

[–]RzK 6 points7 points ago

I prefer boobs

[–]IAmAtomato 7 points8 points ago

Bro, there are a several billion pairs of tits on this planet, BUT THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY FUCKING SHINY CHARIZARDS.

[–]UNionized 0 points1 point ago

As a man, thank you for making me feel self-conscious.

[–]Osnarf 1 point2 points ago

Wouldn't you give them cancer or something?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Mutany[S] 5 points6 points ago

How else do you get a Charizard!

[–]koolkid005 -2 points-1 points ago

Sorry to burst your bubble but an entire first edition set is worth about 100$ on eBay.

[–]chatzimcfee 12 points13 points ago

[–]Deekzlol 0 points1 point ago

Impossibru!

[–]Dietcokke 0 points1 point ago

Look at only the first card in each pack? I don't think it would be quite as effective as we would hope.

[–]cjb630 0 points1 point ago

This. How is this way at the bottom?

[–]Sokor 0 points1 point ago

it's where it belongs

[–]someb0dy 2 points3 points ago

HOLY FUCKING NOSTALGIA

[–]Adonej 0 points1 point ago

The fact that these are from Gen 1 makes me happy enough to shit myself.

[–]KindaAccidentally 1 point2 points ago

It's funny because when I was younger, I'd always get my mom to buy the charizard pack, because of obvious charizard fanboy-ism. Despite buying about around 35 of the damn things, none contained him. So, out of spite, I bought a venusaur pack. Low and behold! A fucking charizard greets me as soon as I open it. The joy and rage felt was extreme.

[–]ObliviousDerpMaster 8 points9 points ago

Magic cards [Fixed]

[–]ThaddeusJP 9 points10 points ago

Apparently with a lot of the older expansions (Revised, the dark, fallen empires) you could slowly push cards up one by one seeing the cards through the plastic. Wizards caught on and foiled the packs.

I really don't know where I was going with this.

[–]ObliviousDerpMaster 1 point2 points ago

Sounds like Wizard FOILED their plans!

[–]ThaddeusJP 1 point2 points ago

[–]pariah_john 2 points3 points ago

Id use it for this instead

[–]PhantomSwagger 2 points3 points ago

...couldn't just use your sense of touch?

[–]Mad_Physicist 1 point2 points ago

But superpowers!

[–]ObliviousDerpMaster 1 point2 points ago

What are those!?!?

[–]machzel08 0 points1 point ago

Yea....Don't look at girls or anything....

[–]SensenmanN 1 point2 points ago

I love the bone structure on that broad.

[–]hasteveil 0 points1 point ago

But that would wreck the whole illusion and mystique of having unopened packages, you silly goof.

Oh, and post this in /r/pokemon, you'll definitely get a better reception.

[–]Krum84 1 point2 points ago

you would also give people cancer eventually

[–]Mad_Physicist 0 points1 point ago

Or glare at them, and give it to them sooner.

[–]IncidentOn57thStreet 0 points1 point ago

I need a pokemon card pack simulator because I need to know what's in them or at least have that thrill somewhere else.

[–]BelaKunn 0 points1 point ago

I will from time to time just buy a random pack of cards from Meijers just to see what card I'll get as my rare. It's a cheap thrill to buy as opposed to a lottery ticket.

[–]The_One_Above_All 1 point2 points ago

I would look at scratch-off lottery tickets. Oh, another winner? Nice.

[–]Alltra 0 points1 point ago

holy shit. i still remember the day i got my charizard

[–]GrabSomePineMeat -1 points0 points ago

Forever Alone

[–]DJmerwin 0 points1 point ago

Forever alone. Level - superhuman

[–]alecyo12 1 point2 points ago

Nostalgia boner

[–]asian_ethics 0 points1 point ago

THAT'S what you would do? ಠ_ಠ

[–]themajor24 0 points1 point ago

Pfffft, what else would you do with x-ray vision?

[–]thisismax 1 point2 points ago

Bullshit. I don't care if you're 8 or 108, you'd be looking at boobs.

[–]ohcfolse -1 points0 points ago

I will find you holo charizard...

[–]tuoder -1 points0 points ago

You don't need x-ray vision. You need a scale something like the small and portable battery-powered sort used for measuring out drugs. The foil ones weigh slightly more than the others.

[–]koolkid005 -3 points-2 points ago

Woo, you can make 50 cents! Oh wait, a pack of cards is 3-4 dollars. So unless you collect random shitty foil cards, what's the point?

[–]Aspel -1 points0 points ago

Get on my level.

Also, with a crack scale you can figure out which ones are foil (and which have RFID tags)

[–]SensenmanN -1 points0 points ago

I had a friend that worked at a shop that sold those cards. They used to just weigh the packs. The ones with foil weigh more.

[–]koolkid005 -1 points0 points ago

It's pointless to do so, the average foil card is worth maybe 20-50 cents. Not worth opening random packs for.

[–]SensenmanN 0 points1 point ago

Maybe for shitty pokemon cards. He was doing it with the WoW cards. Idk what all he took, but I know he Ebayed one of those rocket mount things for like $600.

It's a pretty shitty thing to do, I used to love opening 1-2 packs of cards on the weekend. That $3-6 bucks took for eva to earn, lol.

[–]catsconcert 0 points1 point ago

Aim lower.

[–]BigMoney7 0 points1 point ago

Dat smell.

[–]Mikedaman123 -1 points0 points ago

Ahh the days when every card wasn't a fucking legendary

[–]koolkid005 -1 points0 points ago

Because your nostalgia is worth more than the nostalgia of people younger than you.

[–]c_vic 0 points1 point ago

[–]AdmiralPancake -1 points0 points ago

Tell you what I would do with X-ray vision... two chicks at the same time.

[–]I4mTac -1 points0 points ago

You don't actually need X-ray vision. Holo cards actually make the booster packs slightly thicker than packs without holos. So all you really need are calipers sensitive enough to measure the difference in thickness of the booster packs to know which ones have the good holographic cards in them. This is an inside secret to shops that sell individual cards. Avoid buying boosters from these shops, you'll never find anything valuable.

[–]BelaKunn 1 point2 points ago

I'm glad to find out the shop I bought from as a kid wasn't douchey like this. I managed to get an extremely rare first edition holofoil which I asked if they'd buy it. The guy said he would be he recommended I just sell it on ebay instead as ebay would pay at least 4 times more. Got all of my packs I ever bought covered by that Yu-gi-oh card that I would have never had the cards to play.

[–]koolkid005 -2 points-1 points ago

A pack of cards is 3-4 dollars. The average foil card is worth 20 cents maybe.

[–]I4mTac 0 points1 point ago

Depending on which card game it was. I believe my friend used this trick when he was selling Yu Gi Oh cards in High School. Dude made bank selling boosters to little kids. Sold the holos on ebay for waaaaay more than 20 cents.

[–]koolkid005 -1 points0 points ago

Again, I seriously doubt that. The average foil ccommon card is not worth more than 50 cents max. Maybe if he had a lucky streak and got a lot of rare foils, but still, he would have eventually averaged out back to zero if he kept buying packs.

[–]Monk3on3 -1 points0 points ago

Jesus man! You can't go dropping nostalgia-bombs all willy-nilly like that! You could hurt someone!

This shit was like crack, I swear to god.

I still remember a playground fight that ended in parents being called, a principal visit, and bad blood between a couple kids for ages because of a Charizard.

And if you wanted to recreate "Lord of the Flies", all you'd have to do is trap a group of kids on an island in the mid 90's and give a single kid a stash of those packs.

[–]Haragorn -1 points0 points ago

A friend of mine has made a good deal of money weighing Yu-Gi-Oh cards. If you have a fine scale, you can detect the weight variations that arise from the difference amounts of foil on different cards, and get a good idea of what's inside. It's not 100%, but it's accurate enough.

[–]koolkid005 -2 points-1 points ago

All you would be able to do is tell if there were a foil card, maybe. Not what card it was. And the average foil yugioh card is worth maybe 20 cents. A pack is 3-4 dollars.

[–]Haragorn 0 points1 point ago

I don't know the specifics. Perhaps you're right about being able to determine specific cards. But this is certainly a real thing, and he definitely made some money from it. Not a living, but a good amount for the time he put in.

[–]koolkid005 -1 points0 points ago

Not likely, the average foil card is worth about twice it's non foil value. The average card is worth about 20-50 cents. A pack of cards is 3-4 dollars. Nobody's getting rich buying packs of Pokemon cards.

[–]xXRequiemXx 0 points1 point ago

I cannot upvote enough. This is my childhood. Each package with a new level of hope.

[–]Decyde 0 points1 point ago

You could do what some people do and just open the bags before you buy them. I've seen people do this and it was like..... as they put all the cards they wanted into 1 bag and went through you scan. It's about as bad as the people who use to take the caps off 20 oz soda's because it would say instant winner. Switching to the code has probably saved millions in lost soda revenue a year.

[–]BelaKunn 0 points1 point ago

How was that allowed? That would be considered theft.

[–]Decyde 0 points1 point ago

They can charge whatever they want for beverages. Nothing is better than waiting in line for 30 minutes with no drinking fountains and a soda machine near you for $5 a 20 oz and $3 for a 12 oz can.

[–]macleod2486 0 points1 point ago

Um all you need is just to simply use a gram scale. The ones that weigh slightly more have the foils in them. Bam. [edit]:grammar. Damn my lack of sleep.

[–]ktrixter 0 points1 point ago

And this is how you know you haven't "come of age" yet if this is what you'd use your x-ray vision for.

[–]ToMakeYouMad 0 points1 point ago

Seriously you would choose that of all things. You wouldn't chose to help people or use it to win in gambling?

[–]KristinnEs -1 points0 points ago

This thread shows a disturbing fascination with a crappy kids cartoon as well as a bunch of pretty cardboard.

[–]Neoethilan 0 points1 point ago

I know for Yu-Gi-Oh the pack with the rare cards was always in the same spot in an unopened box, if you got to the box before someone else picked that one you could just take the sixth one down on the left and get a rare. (That's an example, I don't remember the actual position)

[–]weltraumMonster 0 points1 point ago

no that would not help... it would look somthing like this i guess http://imgur.com/lt2X5

[–]Rhesonance 0 points1 point ago

I could feel the difference in booster packs with foils in them by resting the pack on my ring and pointer finger and pushing very quickly and slightly with my thumb. 100% accuracy. Never once bought a pack of cards WITHOUT a holo in it.

[–]GeneralGoot 0 points1 point ago

Enjoy your virginity!

[–]C_T_C_C 0 points1 point ago

:D

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I would give my enemies cancer.

[–]d0n0v4n98 0 points1 point ago

Dat smell when you open up a new pack... Oh, sweet mother of God!

[–]Dirtydiscodeeds 1 point2 points ago

Where is the post of the kid who would go to the deli counter to weigh the cards, since packs with holofoil cards weighed more.

[–]koolkid005 -1 points0 points ago

There's no way a deli scale could measure that slight difference.

[–]ironw00d -2 points-1 points ago

Except you wouldn't be able to distinguish the ink on the paper...dumbass.

[–]fallencathedral -3 points-2 points ago

So...how's that virginity working out for you?

[–]LokiLoLSC2 -3 points-2 points ago

I had a friend who would take a small scale to the store whenever going to buy Pokemon cards. He found the packs with the holographic cards weighed a few more grams than the ones without the holographic cards. The more you know.

[–]koolkid005 -1 points0 points ago

I strongly disbelieve this because a Pokemon card weighs less than a gram.

[–]LokiLoLSC2 0 points1 point ago

I suppose I exaggerated the difference in hindsight, but yes there is a small weight difference between packs with holographic cards in them and packs without.

[–]koolkid005 0 points1 point ago

Yes I know the practice, and it's a very poor way to make money because a pack of cards is 3-4 dollars, and the average foil card is 20-50 cents. that's some shitty EV.

[–]LokiLoLSC2 -1 points0 points ago

Well, this was back with the original 150 Pokemon cards. So those cards will naturally gain value over time. The foil card is worth more than a regular card so if the cards were released back in '96 I believe they would be worth quite a decent sum I would imagine at this point in time if they were still mint. Although I do doubt my friend took that into account. He didn't do it to make money, he did it because he liked the foil cards.
