GF: "Where I'm from if someone flashes their lights it means there's a moose on the road."

Me: "Moose or cop, you're still slowing the fuck down."

[–]boredcanadian 6 points7 points ago

Is she from Canada? That's pretty much my experience.

[–]DrubieDaGuru 3 points4 points ago

Here in Alaska, we don't do this much. We do warn for moose and when you don't have your lights on.

"Oh, shit! I didn't see that car until it was almost too late because it's fucking dark out! I better tell them I couldn't see them..."

[–]moop44 4 points5 points ago

I am still in disbelief that vehicles do not require DRL's in the US. I even hate seeing people drive in fog without lights on.

[–]DrubieDaGuru 2 points3 points ago

I have never had a car that turned on the headlights for you when you started it (that's what I assume DRL stands for...).

[–]moop44 2 points3 points ago

Daytime running lights. Being in Canada, it is mandatory. On top of that, I've only ever owned vehicles with automatic headlights that turn on when it gets dark out (or under a bridge/parking garage etc).

[–]TheLastBadger 1 point2 points ago

[–]superhappyphuntyme 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure it's a scam by GM to make you need to buy bulbs more often. apparently they already have Canada on-bored. you can't tell they are on in the day time and they don't do shit at night

[–]canadas 4 points5 points ago

You can easily tell when they are on during the day. I think they a great thing

[–]d4vi3j03 0 points1 point ago

My GMC doesn't just have drl's it has a sensor to tell how bright it is out and turns my headlights on for me. Never even have to worry about accidentally leaving them on. Best thing ever.

[–]Raptor81692 0 points1 point ago

My 2002 Jetta has DRL's.

[–]moop44 2 points3 points ago

Moose, deer and cops. I flash my headlights for all three.

[–]agileaxe99 0 points1 point ago

Since there ain't no moose in my area, I just do it for cops, deer and fallen trees, that seems to happen a lot

[–]elli0tt 0 points1 point ago

I do this with deer. I figure if the other drivers think there's a cop, they'll be driving slower and paying better attention and hopefully notice the deer.

We need a code for this kind of thing though. 2 flashes deer/moose, 3 for cops, haha.

[–]pingthepong 10 points11 points ago

Bear rolling south bound at the 110 in a plain brown wrapper.

10-4 good buddy.

[–]horseflavour 16 points17 points ago

got saved by someone the other day cause of this!

[–]ravingheaven 7 points8 points ago

I regularly flash trucks when there is a cop in a bend.

[–]horseflavour -1 points0 points ago

upvotes for you

[–]white618 7 points8 points ago

Judge in Florida recently ruled in favor for anyone flashing their lights for any reason. He did so under freedom of speech. I do it to warn people of cops, let them know their lights are off at night, etc... never know who you can save by bringing attention to someone.

[–]realigion 1 point2 points ago

Everyone can still expect to get pulled over and ticketed for this.

[–]space_boat 1 point2 points ago

What do they ticket you for?

[–]realigion 2 points3 points ago

Driving with your high beams on or causing a distraction. I forget the technical names, but that's what they amount to.

[–]BrokenStrides 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand why this is a ticketable offense. If you feel like you need to use hi-beams to safely drive, then you need them...

[–]realigion 0 points1 point ago

You can use your highbeams so long as you're not pointing them towards other vehicles.

[–]white618 0 points1 point ago

I turn my low beams off and on real quick

[–]ChrisWGraphics 5 points6 points ago

Thats how i feel when i do it and they wave back.

[–]MaxBullis 5 points6 points ago

My wife always gives me a hard time because she thinks it is a gang initiation to shoot people who flash their lights at you or something ridiculous like that. I still do it for cop warnings and "lights not on" warnings, Gangs be damned.

[–]yostevo052 6 points7 points ago

Your wife brings new meaning to the word "paranoid" to me....

[–]Sciar 1 point2 points ago

That nigga just flash his lights at us? Aight shoot him

[–]definitelygay 5 points6 points ago

I read that story a while ago. Sounded like typical FWD:FWD:FWD:RE:FWD nonsense.

[–]sgtpppr 1 point2 points ago

Because it is. This is one of the older urban legends that even some rational people believe.

[–]jimmyfallonsleftshoe 1 point2 points ago

I had no idea this is what that meant. About 2 years ago I was driving back from the movies with my mom and sis and this guy flashes his lights at me twice. As he does this he stares right at me, I swear he penetrated my soul. I wasn't speeding though. It freaked me out man.

[–]TinBryn 3 points4 points ago

I wasn't speeding though

that's probably why, he wanted to speed, but you were in the way

[–]jimmyfallonsleftshoe 1 point2 points ago

We were going opposite directions.

[–]ArmenianMadeReddit 0 points1 point ago

Mahh niggha

[–]holymojo96 0 points1 point ago

My brother who lives in L.A. actually told me this too

[–]DoctorTinman 0 points1 point ago

As far as I'm aware, new recruits of some gang (possibly Hell's Angels) ride down the highway with their high beams on and their initiation is to track down and kill the first person to flash them. I've only heard of this happening in California, though.

EDIT: Someone further down posted evidence this isn't true. I blame television for feeding me lies.

[–]dap_159 11 points12 points ago

Be thankful for every person who does this. My mother passed a cop and flashed her lights at a car coming her way, it was another police car. Got a ticket. Here is an article with more information and a case study of someone who stood up to it: http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2011/11/16/speed-trap-warning-can-earn-ticket/

[–]jeberry12 6 points7 points ago

Recently though, there was a court case where the judge ruled that flashing your lights to warn someone of a cop is protected speech. http://www.autoblog.com/2012/05/23/florida-judge-rules-flashing-lights-for-speed-trap-warning-is-co/ A judge in New York said the same thing in 2009.

Not saying you won't get ticketed, just sayin' it is technically legal.

[–]Apostropartheid 2 points3 points ago

Technically only in CA and NY.

[–]agileaxe99 0 points1 point ago

last I knew it was illegal in NY. (From upstate where those bastards will hide anywhere)

[–]realigion 1 point2 points ago

It's actually still technically illegal. The law hasn't changed and, obviously, precedent hasn't really been followed (it's not required to be).

[–]TimmyFTW 0 points1 point ago

Truly a disgusting country that twists its laws like this so people can warn each other to stop breaking the law momentarily because Police are near by.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]TimmyFTW -1 points0 points ago

Of course they do but when people are booked for flashing their lights to warn oncoming motorists that Police are up ahead we don't get all up in arms about the denial of free speech.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]TimmyFTW -1 points0 points ago

I'm not criticising or defending free speech. I was just saying the American interpretation is perverted at times.

[–]pio64 1 point2 points ago

The case the cops usually make is that you impersonate a privileged vehicle (fire, ambulance, police), but you can only do it by flashing short-long beams. If you flick your long ones a couple of times, worth fighting in court.

[–]yostevo052 0 points1 point ago

Um ... granted she might not have noticed it was a cop... that was still a funny mistake to me.... I had to laugh ...

[–]canadas 0 points1 point ago

same thing happened to a find. He didn't get a ticket though the cop just said not to do it again.

[–]binarypolitics 0 points1 point ago

It's ok because I'm not your mother and I can see.

[–]dap_159 0 points1 point ago

This occurred after dark and therefore she could only see a pair of headlights coming, not the car. While it is possible to vaguely identify a car by its headlights, it is not a perfect system.

[–]Reeses95 0 points1 point ago

I did the exact same thing. I passed a town cop, and decided to flash the car coming towards me. It was a state trooper. Good guy state trooper left me alone.

[–]cvframer -1 points0 points ago

I came to tell a similar story, without the case study link.

edit: why am I being downvoted? I had to pay 190$ for "failure to dim" after signaling an oncoming CHP there was a CHP I just passed on hwy 140, Mariposa county 2007.

[–]russiangn 4 points5 points ago

In Ukraine people do this habitually

[–]mj0nes 1 point2 points ago

They do this habitually in all of Eastern Europe.

[–]Notyourfaja 3 points4 points ago

Or you know, you could like, not speed.

[–]yourfriendmisery 1 point2 points ago

The weirdest logical disconnect I see on reddit (at least as a civil engineer) are the constant threads about how tailgaters suck dick, but at the time everyone defends speeding. I also find it absolutely hilarious that people think we set speed limits with any type of communication with the police. Your DoT and your police departments are not related at all. Sure maybe at the city level you get some bullshit, but on interstates and US highways the limits are set by engineers, not cops.

[–]TooLongAlreadyRead 16 points17 points ago

Yea, I did this today. The guy flipped me the bird...then got pulled over. Can't say I didn't try.

[–]hazmat_suit_guy 13 points14 points ago

You went back to see him get pulled over?

[–]TooLongAlreadyRead 2 points3 points ago

Nah. Saw the cop at the intersection ahead. This guy starts speeding ahead of me so I flash a couple of times. He flips the bird and keeps going. Cop turns on his lights and takes him down. BAM justice served.

[–]TheLazyRebel 3 points4 points ago

I more often do it for deer or to warn people to be careful up head.

[–]beergoggles69 6 points7 points ago

I drive around flashing my lights so that people think there is a speed camera ahead and slow down.

There's no camera. I just get off on public safety.

[–]jeberry12 0 points1 point ago

By unnecessarily causing a hazard?

[–]ellifaine 2 points3 points ago

I had that happen to me tonight, except it wasn't a cop I was being warned about.. it was a cow trying to cross the street around the next bend in the road.

[–]swaags 2 points3 points ago

i get the same feeling from letting someone merge when their about to get railroaded by traffic. i love the little wave, it's like "ill never see you again but you are a good person and i salute you."

[–]Nada_Nada_Calabaza 2 points3 points ago

This should be taught in driving school. It is more relevant now than it ever has been before, too. With police departments using speeding tickets for revenue rather than safety, motorists absolutely have to stand up for each other every way possible. I consider warning other drivers of cops as a civic duty.

Also, I flash my lights to warn drivers to slow down for any reason, be it a deer, children in street, or police officers.

[–]YeahSmingersDidIt 4 points5 points ago

People do this?

[–]Ihadacow 17 points18 points ago

They've probably done it for you and you just didn't understand the signal.

[–]raycharleseyes 1 point2 points ago

I literally had no idea people did this either..... Is this some kind of practice in certain areas?? I've never experienced this in Chicago

[–]Smil3zG 0 points1 point ago

People do this in Chicago.

[–]OmniDingle 0 points1 point ago

Motorcyclists tap their helmets.

[–]SuspendTheDisbelief 0 points1 point ago

Not a single motorcyclist I've ever met has known this. It makes me sad =(

[–]OmniDingle 0 points1 point ago

Maybe I just know too many reckless dumbfucks, but I thought it was somewhat standard.

[–]Gutterville 1 point2 points ago

I do this every time I drive to university because there are always police hiding around corners.

[–]zkredux 1 point2 points ago

Couldn't you just claim ignorance? My sister's car has the headlight/windshield wiper controls on the opposite side of my car. I sometimes hit the wrong one when driving her car. Considering it's a brief flash, isn't it hard to prove you DIDN'T do it on accident? After all, the burden of proof is on the prosecution.

[–]jeberry12 0 points1 point ago

Have you ever tried to tell a cop who pulled you over it was an accident? "Sorry I didn't realize I was speeding," or "Sorry I didn't see the stop sign," or "I didn't mean to cut you off." That excuse never works, they just don't care most of the time.

[–]Reservoiren 0 points1 point ago

That's still different from flashing lights though. If you want to actually bolster your story you can just shoot windshield water so it sounds more legitimate that you were fumbling around with the controls.

[–]ragnarar 0 points1 point ago

Or "I flashed because a car had their high beams on"?

[–]zkredux 0 points1 point ago

Cops don't decide the law, judges do. This my excuse for traffic court.

[–]CenturyPunk 1 point2 points ago

You use racial slurs?

[–]lord_fairfax 1 point2 points ago

OP your lights are off.

[–]CountFarussi 1 point2 points ago

I suppose this is a bad time to admit I do this when I see someone approaching me at a high rate of speed, just to see their brake lights in my rear view.

[–]DarkoDonnie 1 point2 points ago

Just had this happen today. Awesome! This is just good will and a togetherness of drivers, restores your faith in humanity.

[–]thattaboychuk 1 point2 points ago

Someone flashed their lights at me yesterday while I was going 80 in the left lane (US). They were behind me. When did this become a way of telling someone to go faster? I tend to just brake check the fuck out of people if they're being douchy like that though.

[–]MexicanAirman -1 points0 points ago

As a speedy driver, sometimes we just mean to move the fuck out of our way. But thanks asshole for assuming and potentially causing a wreck.

[–]thattaboychuk 0 points1 point ago

I'm a speedy driver too but I'm not a dick about it. If I'm going to weave I don't get up on peoples' bumpers and flash my lights at them. I don't think I'm the one being an asshole. Brake checking is to keep said tailgater at a safe enough distance incase anything were to happen. Asshole.

[–]yourfriendmisery 0 points1 point ago

If hes already going 80mph, there are VERY few places in the US where he wasn't already going AT LEAST 10 over. If you are going 10 over and people are still trying to ride your ass, fuck them. At that point they are putting people in danger, and most likely if hes going AT LEAST 10 over, hes probably passing on the left anyway. You are the one being an asshole, and you are way more likely to cause a wreck than he is.

[–]bertrob3 1 point2 points ago

I did that to a cop once. Best part was he just flashed back.

[–]celfers 3 points4 points ago

To everyone: please do this and educate everyone you know to do this all the time.

We can make the world a better place if we campaign just as hard for this as we did for the other reddit causes we've done!

Imagine the grief we can remove!

[–]adaniel28 2 points3 points ago

I always try to do the pay it forward when someone flashes their lights. I have this dream that people will continue paying it forward, and the cop frustrated with cars passing doing 20MPH under the limit, decides to leave and go on a doughnut run.

[–]HikariKyuubi 3 points4 points ago

You, me and everyone who can drive fast and not get into an accident because we actually know how to drive fast AND safely.

[–]LOHare 1 point2 points ago

I flash my lights at speeders whether there is a cop or not.

I promote public safety.

[–]jme5343 0 points1 point ago

Download the Waze gps app for your phone. It does the same thing, only better.

[–]kaleidoscopic_prism 0 points1 point ago

More people need to do this! I feel like I'm the only one flashing these days...

[–]dumbgaytheist 0 points1 point ago

Who else guessed it was "his nigga" before hitting the link?

[–]Niatnuom 0 points1 point ago

You know when you've been on reddit too long when you can consistently guess the image macro.

[–]masterwit 0 points1 point ago

This is the 50th time I've seen this photo on Reddit.

[–]Lady_Vox 0 points1 point ago

I can't get a license because of my sight, but I still totally commend everyone that teaches their offspring these unspoken rules of the road.

Also basic thank you waves for all occasions. These things really do matter and don't cost you much more than a handflick.

[–]plutPWNium 0 points1 point ago

fuck you bitch

[–]slapmesilly69 0 points1 point ago

I fuckin love it when this happens! I love returning the favor to others as well!!!

[–]Ryno9292 0 points1 point ago

thats literally never happened to me :(

[–]joemundel 0 points1 point ago

I did this to one guy before and he just flashed his brights back at me and did not slow down and was pulled over..

[–]superficial32 0 points1 point ago

happened to me today, great feeling.

sometimes someone will flash their lights and I don't see the policeman. I always wonder if it's an offduty policeman just messing with everyone.

[–]Drawtaru 0 points1 point ago

I rarely flash my lights at someone. One of the only times I've ever done it was actually yesterday... there was a guy driving 30mph in a 45mph zone and I really really REALLY like going AT LEAST the speed limit, so I flashed my lights at him. He promptly moved over. All was right with the world.

[–]ianramsrud 0 points1 point ago

I think THIS should be civil law.

[–]Jaybleezie 0 points1 point ago

How does he make that look like a toothpick with such ease?

[–]LadyNerd 0 points1 point ago

The repost is strong with this one

[–]KoalaaaBear 0 points1 point ago

I once flashed my lights but it just made the person in front of me switch lanes. I felt like a dick for a good reason?

[–]Zinny19 0 points1 point ago

I don't know about everyone else but whenever I see this photo of Denzel I say it just like him.

[–]5forsilver 0 points1 point ago

Is there any truth to those rumors where gang members kill people who flash their lights at them?

[–]CountFarussi 2 points3 points ago

No one's lived to tell the tale, friend.

[–]Clownskin 2 points3 points ago

No, that is an urban legend.

[–]planeray 0 points1 point ago

Snopes, as always, has your back.

[–]Big_D_palmtrees -1 points0 points ago

Yes but it's mostly in the Midwest to drivers that flash their lights to advise that the others light are out so be carefull the next time you see a suspicious car driving around with it's lights off

You've seen car accidents happen because of cars carrying 100 dead bodies around?

[–]attractive_commenter 1 point2 points ago

No, I've seen car accidents happen because of people warning other people about cop cars, but once on occasion, someone did warn somebody who had a dead body in their car in jacksonville, FL. both men were arrested.

[–]Ben_Jahmin -1 points0 points ago

People usually don't do that in America, or don't understand when I do it.

[–]jeberry12 1 point2 points ago

People do that all the time in America (at least in Baltimore and Kentucky they do). Maybe just not in your part of America.

[–]Ben_Jahmin 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't seem like Northern CA does it...

[–]jeberry12 0 points1 point ago

Maybe it's just here in the east then.

[–]ArmenianMadeReddit 1 point2 points ago

In glendale ca things are different friend

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]FilmRate 1 point2 points ago

Doesn't need to be your high beams, pple warn each other during the day time too. Usually get warned on the highway, North bound cars notice a cop hidden on the south bound route and warn those heading the cops way. Good guy driver.

[–]jeberry12 0 points1 point ago

Actually, technically not illegal. At least not everywhere. Federal courts have ruled it protected speech in at least Florida and New York.
