Funny, I always just saluted people to check for snipers.

[–]Jisaw 102 points103 points ago

I never knew what to do at training exercises. I walked past an officer, saluted, and got yelled at for highlighting him as a sniper target. I apologized, kept walking and come across a second officer. I then get yelled at for not saluting. Fucking butterbars, man.

[–]w00df00t 32 points33 points ago

That's something I did in the same situation. All of our bootenants would get a crisp "good morning, sir! Sniper check!"

[–]rohei 2 points3 points ago

Bootenants?

[–]w00df00t 1 point2 points ago

"Boot Lieutenants". Basically, brand new officers.

[–]rohei 1 point2 points ago

Ah, ok. Makes sense now, thanks :)

[–]impossiblyirrelevant 2 points3 points ago

I don't understand... Would the snipers shoot at someone being saluted a lot because it would show that they are important?

[–]Jisaw 3 points4 points ago

Exactly. Let's take an average Company; there are a hundred or so Privates/Corporals/Sergeants. There is usually 1 Lieutenant and one Captain (officers who get saluted). Shooting an officer is simply more bang for your buck, and saluting one in the field is like painting him with a big red paintbrush. In my example, I was confused because it's a universal rule to NOT salute in training exercises or while deployed. I was pissed off because some "butterbars," a slang term for the lowest officer rank, are too busy being self-important to realize that they may one day be deployed to a warzone.

[–]impossiblyirrelevant 2 points3 points ago

Makes sense. Thank you for explaining.

[–]Jisaw 0 points1 point ago

No problem.

[–]salkz 0 points1 point ago

I guess.

[–]Cheeseburgerchips 17 points18 points ago

that's just.. awesome

[–]jftaylor21 397 points398 points ago

If there is anything video games has taught me, it is a healthy respect for red barrels. Hopefully, the sniper won't hit that instead.

[–]Ecto_1 117 points118 points ago

fake head perk needs to be in fps. With a camera, this way you can look around to see where your opponents are/where they are firing from.

EDIT Some people are saying this wouldn't work. Honestly, I think it would in one of three ways. And here's how:

1) Someone pops the head, you're still alive. The only thing you lose is the fake head and now you may possibly know where they're coming or shooting from.

2) If you can get a good spot it's entirely possible to use this to bait snipers or other players, alerting your teams sniper to where they are or to have someone ambush them when they come to flank you.

3) Sometimes you won't get seen, but you'll see someone first. If you're fast enough you could pop out and clip them quick.

Obviously this would be more tactical. Guys who like to run and gun would not enjoy this perk.

[–]thermal_shock 198 points199 points ago

its in the works for COD-17

[–]Tamaletaint 270 points271 points ago

Thatll be out in two years

[–]Nitro187 64 points65 points ago

It's already in beta stage....

[–]runean 94 points95 points ago

But beta testing would imply the removal of bugs and extensive balancing...

[–]Hydros 43 points44 points ago

Nah Beta Tests are just marketing tools nowadays.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

*days... and then a few hours later a bunch of DLC will come out

[–]always_sharts 22 points23 points ago

with inflation $50 DLC for $99 game

[–]Sporkinat0r 9 points10 points ago

modern warfare 8

[–]gilligan156 1 point2 points ago

currently slated for spring 2013

[–]ImAFuckingMeteor 0 points1 point ago

But currently all their programming efforts are tied up figuring out how to track and display your current win streak instead of just your max. So far the problem is intractable.

[–]Agent_Of_Trantor 1 point2 points ago

There are some things man was not meant to know!

[–]Misk232 28 points29 points ago

Knowing the CoD franchise now, the helmet will have infrared/night-vision and as you level up, the helmet will also come with a pistol with 5 shots, the pistol changes as you lvl from a simple makarov to a full on desert eagle/revolver.

[–]Khuskan 16 points17 points ago

It's not quite the same thing, but a little bit better.

M240 with remote thermal sniper sight

[–]dickcheney777 7 points8 points ago

How do you see shit after the first shot?

[–]I_am_salad 2 points3 points ago

The next upgrade is cryogenic bullets.

[–]Khuskan 0 points1 point ago

I think it's just for show and the system mounts onto the hardware rail, however you would be surprised how accurate heavy machine guns are on the first shot. I seem to recall a m2 .50 Cal holds a high place on the longest sniper kill records.

[–]dickcheney777 2 points3 points ago

Its 10$ if you want the desert eagle helmet handgun DLC.

[–]Misk232 1 point2 points ago

It's $10 for the helmet, 5 for the stick, and 25 for the gun.

[–]LynkDead 10 points11 points ago

Most FPSs these days are so fast paced that by the time the decoy got shot and you stood back up the chances of people still being in the same spot are pretty different. Besides, if you know a sniper/camper has a bead on that particular window it would just make more sense to try and flank them rather than go through that window where they already know you are.

The idea is cool, but I can't see it being implemented in today's shooters at all. Maybe if someone made a slower paced shooter where death had a much bigger penalty.

[–]RogueTaco 14 points15 points ago

so... Counter Strike?

[–]LynkDead 19 points20 points ago

Even Counter-Strike is too fast paced for this kind of system. The rounds are extremely short, it's easy to flank someone, and the penalty for dying is pretty minimal. The closest games to this that exist today would likely be America's Army or ARMA.

[–]Sub-cidal 9 points10 points ago

It's a shame what happened to Americas Army, That game use to be so fucking fun, And then they just destroyed it.

Pipeline 4 life.

[–]dig_dong 6 points7 points ago

I haven't played it in years but Pipeline and Bridge were fun as hell

[–]Sub-cidal 1 point2 points ago

Bridge was a great map too, I preferred the Second version where you could run through the lower part though. It added so much more to the game and it was scary as shit running across the side path.

TBH Both of them are awesome maps. Bridge 1 & 2 and Pipeline are IMO some of the best maps ever made for an FPS.

Hell all of the maps were pretty awesome up to the point when the game started going downhill. I was SO let down with the new version I played it one time for like 3 minutes and deleted it.

[–]LynkDead 1 point2 points ago

I loved the hell out of that game when it first came out. Then people figured out how to nade spam the spawns, and now the new version is too fast-paced and arcade-y.

EDIT: Also, the original had the genius-level decision of making it so no matter what team you were on you ALWAYS looked like the good guys, and the enemy team always looked like the bad guys. I wish more games would do this, or at least have the option for it.

[–]Sub-cidal 0 points1 point ago

I remember the day it was released, I had been watching videos for months. I was PUMPED, But back then you had to pass the MOUT course before you could play on other maps, The MOUT servers were PACKED with people, Some of the best gaming I've ever had.

[–]LynkDead 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, the mandatory training was pretty awesome, as well as forcing players to pass the weapon quals to use the other weapons in multiplayer.

[–]kg333 0 points1 point ago

Although I never quite understood the weird effects that had on the weapons. If I understood correctly, you started out with an M16/M4 that had the ballistics of an AK, and if you picked up an AK, it fired like an M16...

[–]Highlighter_Freedom 1 point2 points ago

No, you used an M16 (or M249) at the start of the round. Stealing an enemy weapon gave you the AK. The same was true for the other side--the weapons they started with (that look like AKs to you) function as M16s while they are using them.

Basically no matter which side you are on, if you are holding a friendly weapon, it works as the American version, if you are holding an enemy weapon it functions as an OPFOR weapon.

Or that's how it did work. Now I think you actually play as OPFOR? I don't know, it's been years.

[–]koltrui 0 points1 point ago

MOUT MCKENNA!!!

[–]Tech_Marauder 0 points1 point ago

http://www.battlegroundeurope.com/

Play this, it fills all the criteria.

[–]deanphilo 0 points1 point ago

my god... I remember this when it was wwiionline.com and despite having the worst engine ever it was mysteriously fun... sort of. I wonder if it's any better now that my computer is a bajillion times faster.

[–]Flytch 0 points1 point ago

How does Counter-Strike fit any of those criteria?

[–]RogueTaco 0 points1 point ago

Bigger death penalty, as in once you die you are dead. I always thought counterstrike would be better if everyone coordinated their attacks and used strategies, but instead my whole team rushes in and dies leaving me as the only guy left :/

[–]Ecto_1 0 points1 point ago

I edited my post kind of as a reply to you, but I figured it wouldn't get seen under yours.

[–]LynkDead 0 points1 point ago

I think someone really just needs to develop a really fun, dedicated sniper multiplayer game. Tricks like this could be part of your kit, along with different camo, scopes, rounds, etc. Everyone knows people love sniping, but no one has made a good multiplayer game centered around it (not counting Silent Scope 2, that game was badass).

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

This would be 100% pointless is most FP these days like COD. More realistic and more teamwork based games like Arma(from what ive heard) would be great to have this in though

[–]A_Wild_Missingno 0 points1 point ago

Good idea but there are so many things that need to be in games that just aren't. Using mirrors to look in corners, breaking holes in walls to go around, things like that.

Games aren't real life; nobody really spends 10 minutes camping someone with a sniper rifle. That's like an entire round. In my opinion, sniping should be taken the FUCK out of every game. The last thing I want to do when playing a game is get randomly killed by a camping whore that my guns literally cannot hit via the bullet programming code. Yeah you can sit there camping for ever like real life, but games are supposed to actually be fun. Waiting is boring for the camper and it's boring for the other people trying to just have fun too.

[–]sgt0pimienta 6 points7 points ago

I bet the sniper's aiming for the coca-cola

[–]styroteqe 106 points107 points ago

I've seen this picture a hundred times, easily. Never noticed the bearded dude chillin in the background until today.

[–]MakeMeNaked 26 points27 points ago

Bearded dude looks like he has a pink shirt on and is taking a "permanent" nap.

[–]styroteqe 9 points10 points ago

haha I can't tell if he's toast or if he's propping himself up to look at his watch.

[–]Dystopeuh 4 points5 points ago

I don't think his shirt is pink, that kind of looks like a red plastic gas can, which he's resting against. His body's on the right (which explains his right arm curled up and his hand resting on his shoulder), and he awkwardly turned his head to look at what was going on.

[–]Kracus 0 points1 point ago

Could be a white shirt... Tie dye that hard way.

[–]crazy1000 0 points1 point ago

If you look closely it appears to be a grayish shirt with something that has a red cover next to him. There is even something black between it and him that it appears to be propped up against.

[–]plsenjy 13 points14 points ago

You can always tell a Milford Man

[–]ahens 13 points14 points ago

I had to go back and look hard to find him.

[–]ghatid 8 points9 points ago

How about the rifle pointed right at the guy? Also, there is a hand holding the bottle of water...

[–]Pony_ 1 point2 points ago

He's really failing his sniper check.

[–]JimmyTango 0 points1 point ago

And it looks like a Barrett .50 at that. If that shit misfires it's gonna be a messy cleanup.

[–]Hovsky 0 points1 point ago

An M95 perhaps?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Me too...

p.s. muzzle check! his own gun is pointed right at himself...

[–]IndustrialDesignLife 4 points5 points ago

Today I noticed that it kinda looks like he has a laser spot on his hip. As if the sniper is watching this from another window like "lol nice try".

[–]jacobo 1 point2 points ago

i've seen this pic with the captiion: definition of trolling

[–]patn 1 point2 points ago

I've never noticed the gun pointing directly at the guy's head.

[–]MisterUNO 3 points4 points ago

Same. This is a very popular pic and I always spot something new everytime I see it. Saw the bearded dude a while ago. Today I just noticed the guy in a gorilla suit walking by.

[–]dontshootiamempty 0 points1 point ago

Or that water bottle floating in the air.

[–]styroteqe 1 point2 points ago

I think the water bottle is sitting on top of a wood block or something

[–]StewieBanana 161 points162 points ago

If the sniper sees that, he's just going to keep firing until a +100 pops up on his display. Not a very good technique IMO.

[–]Andythefan 39 points40 points ago

No marksman bonus? :(

[–]CurrentsConvulsive 8 points9 points ago

Marksman Bonus 348 Headshot Bonus 10 Enemy Down 100

[–]CakeSmasher 5 points6 points ago

Implying that Valve Anti Cheat doesn't work.

[–]pensaint11 21 points22 points ago

this will probably get lost in the comments, but how effective is this? i mean, what if the sniper sees it but cant get a clear shot and doesnt fire? then would everyone think that its clear and go out and then get pinged? also, does anyone actually stick their head out that far for more than 0.5-1 second? i genuinely want to know, not trying to argue or start shit, please be nice internet

[–]MrXBob 8 points9 points ago

No idea how effective it was, but snipers in WWII used this technique a lot too, so I guess it works at least.

[–]mechabeast 4 points5 points ago

what bothers me is what if the sniper decides to call in a mortar on the room you're in?

[–]BStreet 10 points11 points ago

BURN HIM. BURN HIM ALIVE.

[–]P9J0S6 2 points3 points ago

I guess the answer is that a. an enemy sniper is likely not going to second guess a head popping out of a position where he has an idea the enemy is, and b. it's a hell of a lot better than walking into an open area with no idea what they're facing/where the sniper is. Though they are probably already pinned down by the sniper anyways.

[–]Oatcutter 1 point2 points ago

Simple answer: It's more effective than not doing it.

[–]hawks0311 0 points1 point ago

The team holding the fake head have snipers posted elsewhere. They are trying to get the insurgent sniper to take a shot, revealing his position, then the sniper team will have PID (positive identification) as to where the bad guys are.

[–]pensaint11 0 points1 point ago

nice, thank you. that makes sense

[–]unrectifiable 4 points5 points ago

Just performing a puppet show for his buddies on the other side.

[–]d0wnside 3 points4 points ago

Muzzel awareness: Zero

Fucks given: Zero

[–]raging_asshole 10 points11 points ago

Can you imagine being there, laying on your back, knowing that a round could come flying through at any second blowing a hole through you or one of your comrades?

Or imagine being that guy, holding the head, when suddenly you feel a shock run down your arms as the stick is blasted from your hands by a bullet that was meant for your face, sent by some stranger you've never met who doesn't even speak your language?

[–]jeffp 1 point2 points ago

That was so equoulently written but morbid at the same time...

[–]Nerdcubed 1 point2 points ago

No I can't and for that I am truly, truly grateful.

[–]alcakd 1 point2 points ago

who doesn't even speak your language?

[–]kg333 4 points5 points ago

I actually saw a mod for this...watching an engineer get stabbed by his sentry gun is hilarious.

[–]RyanCacophony 1 point2 points ago

I looked it up, this mod no longer works :/

[–]imbritishnotgay 34 points35 points ago

I like it how he leaves his weapon facing him, negligent discharge can hurt ya know.

Edit; grammar

[–]grif392 18 points19 points ago

accidental discharge really is not that much of a thing

guns are not alive; if there is nothing to make the firing pin hit the cartridge, nothing will happen

[–]DankBeard 8 points9 points ago

That's why the military changed the term to negligent discharge instead.

[–]82615632168029 32 points33 points ago

Its hilarious that you guys are commenting on muzzle awareness when there's a FUCKING SNIPER trying to blow his head off. Safety has its relative degrees of practicality. Try clearing a house and practicing garrison style levels of muzzle awareness. Not only is it impossible, its stupid and completely unnecessary. Like PT belts.

[–]Whiskey-Business 8 points9 points ago

but the PT belts look fabulous.

[–]Thisisacoolname 0 points1 point ago

I shine that shit daily.

[–]moanerific 61 points62 points ago

Accidental Discharge or Negligent Discharge.

'Premature Discharge' sounds like a medical condition.

[–]DefinitelyRelephant 19 points20 points ago

There are no accidental discharges, only negligent discharges.

The weapon functions exactly as it should, and when it doesn't, you should've been utilizing proper muzzle awareness to begin with.

[–]moanerific 9 points10 points ago

They were still called AD's when I went through basic in 2003.

They became Negligent shortly before I deployed in 2005.

[–]malcolmreynolds1989 5 points6 points ago

guns don't just go off. the 4 rules are for handling firearms.

[–]Thisisacoolname 0 points1 point ago

But he has a BFA on it...

[–]MrMadcap 2 points3 points ago

I'd be worried that he saw it and was moving to a better position. I'd probably be popping that head over the edge for a good 30 minutes before I'd feel comfortable putting my own ass on the line.

[–]jsmith223 2 points3 points ago

Brought to you by Coca Cola

[–]captaincupcake234 2 points3 points ago

Already seen this in Enemy at the Gates.

[–]Lhabs 2 points3 points ago

Any one else notice the 50 cal on the ground pointed directly at his head?

[–]dysphoros 6 points7 points ago

Can you imagine the feeling that goes through them if that gets shot?

[–]jmc_automatic 12 points13 points ago

I imagine it's something along the lines of "...Well, fuck"

[–]singularissententia 2 points3 points ago

Judging by rifle on the floor, it seems that these guys are snipers themselves, meaning that the "sniper check" isn't just meant to find out if there are enemy snipers, but also where they are.

There is very likely a second soldier in a more hidden position watching for a muzzle flash (which would precede the dummy getting hit).

So to answer your question, I imagine the feeling is this:

"hunting time."

[–]iinventeddice 1 point2 points ago

Wilson!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!!

[–]BHynes92 11 points12 points ago

If it looks stupid but works, it's not stupid.

[–]vekko 42 points43 points ago

Another way to check for snipers is to shout out "MOHAAAMMEED". If they answer "YES?" then there is a sniper nearby.

[–]ScotteeMC 36 points37 points ago

Well shit, if your shout can be heard a mile away, why don't you just FusRoDah the enemy to death?

[–]Aegean 13 points14 points ago

Rumor has it that DARPA is working on this very technology.

[–]tk425 2 points3 points ago

Obscure RB6 reference?

[–]vertekal 1 point2 points ago

YES!

[–]ElGuisante2 1 point2 points ago

I always preferred coming around the corner whilst ducking up and down furiously to dodge bullets. I'm sure this is standard combat training in the military today.

[–]vertekal 1 point2 points ago

If you knew how to leanwalk, you could move about in the open and bullets wouldn't hit you. It was always an argument after every clan match where the losing team accused the winning team of glitching.
