Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

And here's the beautiful view from Baltimore Ave and 10th Street

[–]Yooltide 6 points7 points ago

I probably live 15 ft from this picture... Eery.

[–]millerswiller 7 points8 points ago

Get used to seeing it (on Reddit). It shows up here at least once a year. Also - finally nice to get a break from this heat, huh?

[–]LlamanatorZ 2 points3 points ago

I'm just glad we aren't in Texas, honestly.

[–]danthew00t 0 points1 point ago

Being in Texas, I honestly would be glad to be there.

[–]Yooltide 1 point2 points ago

I'm on a motorcycle solely and it finally doesn't feel like a hot air blow dryer. I even felt goosebumps this morning. I had missed them.

[–]sometimes_i_downvote 0 points1 point ago

As a year round rider from Seattle, Washington, I can't even imagine having that issue...

[–]Downhill280Z 1 point2 points ago

Hey, more Kc people! I'm down in Westport, and I have to agree this drop in heat is lovely. As an aside, do we have our own subreddit?

[–]iFUBAR 1 point2 points ago

r/kansascity

[–]TopherAbe 0 points1 point ago

God, don't you have a computer to fix or a cave to explore?

[–]iFUBAR 0 points1 point ago

So many posts to downvote, so little time

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It was so nice yesterday afternoon, it's awfully muggy today. It isn't 106 though so I'm not complaining!

[–]NextDayAir 0 points1 point ago

more than that... I've seen it 3 times now in the past 2 months...

[–]millerswiller 1 point2 points ago

I'm considering starting:

/r/KansasCityLibraryParkingLot

[–]bethanyj 0 points1 point ago

ThinkGeek posted it on their facebook today. I'd assume it came from there this time.

[–]SquirrelyPants 1 point2 points ago

I just moved to Independence a few weeks ago. I've been super excited to head that way and check it out, but life is busy!

[–]crbill 0 points1 point ago

Library/Board of Trade lofts? I looked at those.

[–]ChaosMotor -1 points0 points ago

Eerie.

[–]Yooltide 0 points1 point ago

[–]dsquaredduffy 1 point2 points ago

Broadway and 8th ova here!

[–]Lukalock 1 point2 points ago

That is so awesome. What a great way to deal with what would normally be a terrible eyesore (parking garage).

[–]jehe -3 points-2 points ago

upvotes for not making a [fixed] post.

[–]jsellout 3 points4 points ago

No, a [FIXED] post would be like if all the books were photoshopped into barbeque sauce bottles or murders or some other Kansas City thing.

[–]aggykryss 0 points1 point ago

I'm moving back to that neck of the woods soon, and I am totally dreading the return to murderland... Here in Hawaii, you can go an entire WEEK without hearing about a murder on the islands... And it's never with guns! It's like another planet, I swear!

[–]breakingrecords 33 points34 points ago

always upvote Kansas City.

[–]chikinboy 0 points1 point ago

Isn't there one like this in D.C.??

[–]suchaloser 22 points23 points ago

That's actually the library's parking garage. As Kansas City has essentially zero public transit, parking was a necessity, but the city decided to make a work of art out of it.

[–]DnWeava 4 points5 points ago

There are tons of bus routes in KC and a bus station across the street from this library. Parking is needed because we aren't on Manhattan...

[–]suchaloser 2 points3 points ago

Yeah I guess I was being unfair to the bus system. KCMO really does have a top of the line bus service to most of the central city area. The problem is mostly the anti-transit attitude the city holds, the lack of any rail-based transportation, minimal inter-city bus lines and the absolutely horrendous public transit in Johnson County (where I live), the Northland, and any of the major satellites (Lees Summit, Blue Springs).

[–]bethanyj 0 points1 point ago

There's a stop up here in Liberty and over by Zona Rosa...Gladstone, too, I believe.

[–]suchaloser 0 points1 point ago

I don't spend much time North of the river, so I'm no expert, but my impression of buses in that area was similar to the buses here in Shawnee, and in Lenexa, OP, Olathe, etc., in which bus stops are extremely poorly marked and spread out so as to be impractical for more than occasional use.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

Are you implying that the KC Mass Transit system is not overly fucked?

[–]DnWeava 3 points4 points ago

the system could use some improvements but it works. The 2 MAX routes are great and I took advantage of the I29 express to the airport last month which was much cheaper than parking at the airport, system is far from fucked as you put it.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

That's debatable.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Well I guess everyone shouldn't have voted down light rail a few years back as well as moving things like Kaufman and Arrowhead downtown. It seems we as a community prefer driving through urban spawl.

[–]ILL_Show_Myself_Out 53 points54 points ago

It's an 18 story building.

[–]publiclibraries 17 points18 points ago

Um. what.

[–]jsellout 7 points8 points ago

/thread.

[–]goldbowlofawesome 4 points5 points ago

FUCKIN FUCK WHAT DID HE SAY?

[–]bethanyj 0 points1 point ago

It was a picture of 4 different colored spools of thread.

[–]Probablybeinganass 5 points6 points ago

That's not an imgur link.

[–]ciavs 1 point2 points ago

[–]inside_sucks 14 points15 points ago

If you look closely at the stairs leading to the entrance they are books stacked on top of each other. The library itself is converted from the old First National Bank.

[–]needleRick11 5 points6 points ago

What is this!?!!? A school for Dinosaurs?

[–]CoyoteStark 18 points19 points ago

Wow this library sucks. There's like 10 books and there's no way you could fit them in your car, let alone read them.

[–]skiierman 2 points3 points ago

First they build it for ants, now they are building it for giants. WHY CAN'T WE GET IN THE MIDDLE!??

[–]ArkadiusMaximus 4 points5 points ago

When I see classic books like this it always makes me wonder what books from our generation will be up there.

[–]rthunderc6 7 points8 points ago

There will be no books, just stacks of Kindles and Nooks.

[–]urmahgrrdberks 0 points1 point ago

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Never Let Me Go, The Road, Remainder, Atonement, Home, White Teeth.

This is just a list from a contemporary literature class I'll be taking.

[–]ArkadiusMaximus 0 points1 point ago

The Road and Never Let Me Go are amazing.

[–]thunderbrother -2 points-1 points ago

Twilight.

[–]fuelvolts 6 points7 points ago

Does it bother anyone else that Romeo and Juliet is such a long "book". It's not that long of a story.

[–]Contrapaul 1 point2 points ago

Maybe it's just the large print edition.

[–]heytheredelilahTOR 2 points3 points ago

As an interior design student and an architect geek, I freaking love this! Now I feel ashamed that I've not heard of this building before now.

[–]Keiserwillhelm -2 points-1 points ago

As a (junior) architect I really, really hate this. I can't be the only one that thinks this is a little gimmicky / kitchy can I?
Check out the kansas City art museum's new addition by Steven Holl for something a little more elegant.

Link for the interested.

Edit: removed some douchey-ness. This post sounds really stuck up, apologies around

[–]millerswiller 2 points3 points ago

As a (junior) architect, you should learn to appreciate the usage of whimsy. Check out Sambo Mockbee's work.

Or, on a larger scale, Copenhagen's airport:

http://themetapicture.com/copenhagen-airport-in-denmark-is-shaped-like-a-paper-airplane/

Sure, this sort of thing can get carried away. But I'd much rather look at something that's a bit 'different' than something that's more predictable.

[–]Keiserwillhelm 0 points1 point ago

I regret my post but here's me trying to explain it anyways ( I also just saw that this is not the library but the parking garage, which makes this a little more palatable for me)

I enjoy playfulness in architecture when its appropriate and really do like mockbee and the rural studio's take on vernacular design and construction methods. There are some Japanese firms that go to town on with stuff like slides ramps, hidden parts of buildings, guest bathrooms that are purposely difficult to use etc.... BUT that's far removed from the postmodern dressing up of a library as a bunch of books. I'm all for thinking outside of the box, but for me, the most predictable thing you could do is design a library that looks like a bookshelf. Once you 'get the joke' there's not much left to the building. I think you can do more than that with architecture and should do more. Maybe i'm just reacting to the Robert Venturri in this.

[–]millerswiller 0 points1 point ago

No worries. I'm a fan of imagination in architecture (Gehry's MIT work / Safdie's work / etc) and I'm sure you see a lot of that in your every day work.

It would be one thing if it was different just for the sake of being different but if it adds a bit of visual interest and does so in a way that won't get tired after first viewing, then I think it can work.

Anyway . . . judging by the number of times the KC Library Parking Garage appears on Reddit and tons of other blogs, I think some people get some joy from it.

Cheers!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

You learn pretty quickly not to talk about architecture in /r/pics. You get downvoted to hell really quickly as soon as you oppose the way the building looks. I spent hours defending my point of view about the school of music that looks like a piano in China one time. Never again in /r/pics

[–]heytheredelilahTOR 0 points1 point ago

I guess what attracts me to it IS the kitchyness.

[–]Glorfon 2 points3 points ago

The Kansas City downtown library is great. But that's actually the parking garage in this photo.

[–]mrob0t 2 points3 points ago

That picture must have been taken a while ago (or during winter time) because I just drove by it this weekend and those trees out front were much larger and obscuring most of that side of the building.

[–]Timmyc62 2 points3 points ago

Kansas City, Kansas, or Kansas City, Missouri?

[–]crbill 2 points3 points ago

The library is in KC, MO

[–]JakeLV426 2 points3 points ago

I imagined a Library in Kansas city would be on fire

[–]Garanik 1 point2 points ago

Romeo and Juliet is way too thick.

[–]lisan_al_gaib 1 point2 points ago

What is this.... A CITY FOR ANTS?!

[–]DynamicImpulses 2 points3 points ago

I work right next to the library and enjoy walking past it on my lunch break. Beautiful building.

[–]Idol_Luna 1 point2 points ago

I live in KC, and I haven't been there yet

[–]fellowyellow 0 points1 point ago

You must go! That place is so beautifully built, though kind of chilly inside.

[–]Idol_Luna 0 points1 point ago

I like chilly, maybe I'll go today if I get out of work early enough

[–]spacedude86 1 point2 points ago

The scale of that Romeo and Juliet hardcover is slightly exaggerated.

[–]Hreinzi 0 points1 point ago

Good Books

[–]ThunderNathan 0 points1 point ago

I live about 20 mins from this picture. Fun, fun.

[–]abbazabbaGCM 0 points1 point ago

KC PRIDE!

[–]TeckdPersonage 0 points1 point ago

ThinkGeek posted this same pic on facebook today. They said it is a parking garage.

[–]shulmaneister 0 points1 point ago

is it kcmo? or kck?

[–]SnacktimeKC 0 points1 point ago

A friend walked there and sat down at a computer terminal, the seat was soaked with urine. It was a long walk home.

[–]Jimmigill 0 points1 point ago

Where is this?

[–]Contrapaul 0 points1 point ago

In Kansas City, I'd guess.

[–]Jimmigill 0 points1 point ago

Clearly.

[–]Korben_Da11as 0 points1 point ago

I park behind Fahrenheit 451. Baker Vawter Building. Woo!

[–]ssk211 0 points1 point ago

romeo and juliet is not that large...

[–]jax1492 0 points1 point ago

i have seen this on reddit now 5 times ... either i spend too much time on red... na must be a repost

[–]brianjaygilmore 0 points1 point ago

Kansas City really is a beautiful place. They spend a (comparatively) high amount of their city budget on art, and it shows.

[–]anelson1419 0 points1 point ago

My sister lives directly across the street from these in the "Library lofts", she gets her morning coffee and watches the homeless people that sleep in the stairwell of the parking garage.

[–]DPAS 0 points1 point ago

THIS WAS ON THE FRONT PAGE TWO WEEKS AGO

[–]purplezebra98 0 points1 point ago

I live near Kansas City and I've never seen this.

[–]Eurydemus 0 points1 point ago

When's it my turn to repost this?

[–]stupid_name 0 points1 point ago

I parked here a few weeks ago and had a meeting next door...

I'll close the door on my way out...

[–]CarlosMontoya 0 points1 point ago

I just took pics of this for work and now those trees are so big you cant even see a lot of the books

[–]CarlosMontoya 0 points1 point ago

Wait how many people here live in/ near KC? or at least who's willing to admit it haha, cuz i do

[–]tiggerspencer 0 points1 point ago

that is the neatest idea i have ever seen

[–]AtticaTay -1 points0 points ago

I'm waiting for someone to complain that the Twilight Series doesn't 'bless the entrance'.

I like how neat stuff popped up in the area after I moved away.

Or, maybe it was always cool, and I was too young and cold/hot with the crappy weather to ever notice? Though I do miss me a good thunderstorm/tornado warning.

[–]RockChalk808 -1 points0 points ago

I live near this and had no idea it existed :(
