[–]FleeterHelms 495 points496 points ago

Obligatory "Got with" = "tortured and raped" comment.

[–]carlfartlord 255 points256 points ago

It's is pretty academically dishonest to conflate a washed up rock star with the world's most notorious rapist.

[–]Very_High_Templar 123 points124 points ago

If we don't observe history, Asia could fall victim to a mass rape from a washed up rockstar again!

[–]random_account123456 30 points31 points ago

Steve Howe nooooooo!!!

[–]hisham_hm 15 points16 points ago

But it was the heat of the moment!

[–]TootyTheFeeble 5 points6 points ago

And now it's stuck in my head. How long will it be there? Only time will tell.

[–]deviationblue 2 points3 points ago

Didn't get stuck in my head...I'm the sole survivor.

[–]baconatedwaffle 9 points10 points ago

I never knew rape was so metal until I watched Detroit Metal City

[–]SweetNeo85 1 point2 points ago

Come to think of it, has anyone seen Kevin Cronin lately?

[–]jcarberry 1 point2 points ago

Welcome to /r/nocontext

[–]Keyserchief 41 points42 points ago

What's the difference between Bret Michaels and Genghis Khan? One is the world's most notorious rapist, and the other is Genghis Khan.

Not technically accurate, but fuck it.

[–]heylittlebuddy 18 points19 points ago

i wonder if genghis khan but fucked it

[–]freestyle6R 10 points11 points ago

It would be 1.5 if he hadn't!

[–]KennyLoggnsDngrZone 11 points12 points ago

It's hard to have a great rock comeback these days. Don't be so hard on Khan. He's trying.

[–]Azartic 8 points9 points ago

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!

[–]le_utilisateur 2 points3 points ago

Not sure if Magicka or Star Trek reference...

[–]Azartic 1 point2 points ago

Both.

[–]NotaMethAddict 6 points7 points ago

Bret Michaels needs to step up his game.

[–]offmyrocker 3 points4 points ago

bret michaels didn't make it his mission to rape as many women as possible

[–]Bacontron 2 points3 points ago

I know, what a shame to Genghis Khan

[–]ziplokk 3 points4 points ago

Genghis Kahn is not a washed up rock star!

[–]SteiniDJ 0 points1 point ago

I remember reading that this was not from the Smithsonian, but rather some student working on a school project.

[–]GuamPolice 0 points1 point ago

If we don't learn from History Channel, we're destined to repeat History Channel...

[–]G0VERNMENT -1 points0 points ago

I know Julian Assange is nothing like Bret Michaels...

[–]mrdeadsniper 8 points9 points ago

To be fair, it does say Historically "Hardcore" I am pretty sure rape is only less hardcore than snuff.

[–]childeroland 6 points7 points ago

Raped, yes. Tortured, no. The Mongols didn't torture during Genghis Khan's reign.

[–]froibo 7 points8 points ago

If I am remembering correctly, ghengis was very civil, he only allowed his clans to pillage and rape to keep them happy.

[–]FleeterHelms 11 points12 points ago

This is true. They also asked politely if they liked anal, and respected their wishes.

[–]TheFlea1 0 points1 point ago

and called them the next day.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

Just FYI, relative to how long human beings have been having sex and evolutionary biology, that is the standard in "getting with".

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

Got a source on this? It's commonly held, but I don't think it's well supported.

[–]njm1314 18 points19 points ago

You want a source that rape and pillaging are the historical norms? All of recorded history perhaps?

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points ago

How about we act like adults and cite sources?

[–]sje46 10 points11 points ago

The claim was that rape was the primary way that humans reproduced, not that it was very common. Everyone agrees it was very common back then. But was most sex forced?

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

All of recorded history perhaps?

That's the second worst citation I've seen in a long time.

[–]njm1314 0 points1 point ago

Second worst?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Someone in AskReddit was saying that white people were the first to realize that slavery was wrong, and when asked for citation, replied "The civil war".

[–]blanketyblanks 0 points1 point ago

he may have been a sensitive lover, we'll never know.

[–]letmetellyouhowitis 0 points1 point ago

so is this actually true???

[–]FleeterHelms 8 points9 points ago

How do you think conquerers took over a civilization? By killing off their men and impregnating their women to carry their bloodline.

[–]smartalco 117 points118 points ago

[–]justbecausewhynot 34 points35 points ago

Only 3? Damn.

[–]imericrife 40 points41 points ago

They actually weren't sponsored by Smithsonian. It was just some art student who wanted to make some designs for a project. http://www.behance.net/gallery/Smithsonian/376305

[–]GameDay98 4 points5 points ago

Get rich or die cryin.

[–]DrRedApple 13 points14 points ago

That 50 cent and teddy comparison is just such complete BS. Curtis got shot 9 times and one bullet went in his face. He survived to tell the tale. He deserves to brag about it, even though he hasn't in years.

Teddy got shot in practically a bullet proof vest that just barely failed to stop the bullet. (yes i know it was a book)

EDIT: it was a case, not a book.

EDIT2: It was a speech, not a case, or a book.

[–]dekuscrub 12 points13 points ago

That's nice. He was still aware that he had been shot and didn't leave the stage, speaking for 90 minutes while bleeding profusely.

[–]CozyAsian 12 points13 points ago

It wasn't a book. It was a folio of his speech and his metal eyeglasses case.

[–]DrIanBiro-Pen 2 points3 points ago

I'm pretty sure if anyone got shot nine times with one bullet speeding through their face and tearing apart their muscle, they'd talk about it a lot. Also, it's 50 cent's job to talk about that, it's in one of his tracks, you know, he preforms them on stage.

[–]slaughterhouse_809 10 points11 points ago

50 cent was shot at 9 times only 3 bullets hit him.

[–]alecyo12 1 point2 points ago

It was his 70 page speech folded in his pocket.

[–]Jaf207 0 points1 point ago

Some kid in my history class said the 50 Cent one before. I hope they make more of these.

[–][deleted] 182 points183 points ago

That would explain my love of spears, axes, and fire.

[–]nukeforyou 77 points78 points ago

dont forget a predilection for little fur hats.

[–]J4k0b42 37 points38 points ago

And knocking people's houses down with bulldozers.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points ago

And bypasses... you gotta build bypasses.

[–]P8ntBal1551 17 points18 points ago

You know how much damage that this bulldozer will get if i just let it roll over you?

[–]strothgar 15 points16 points ago

None at all?

[–]electric_creamsicle 0 points1 point ago

Alright, I'll get up, but you have to lie down in front of it for me. My friend is babbling about going down to the pub anyway.

[–]StrykerVenom 4 points5 points ago

We'll see who rusts first.

[–]Phil_J_Fry 2 points3 points ago

I mean, it's a Bypass - It's got to be built and it's going to be built

[–]freerangehuman[!] 22 points23 points ago

and sturdy tiny horses.

[–]iamthemanohdamn 14 points15 points ago

and rape.

[–]_pHy_ 6 points7 points ago

and my axe?

Edit: Haha, it's silly how this gets upvotes...

[–]Spider_Rapist 0 points1 point ago

Oh wow I didn't know I was part Mongol!

[–]EonSemal 50 points51 points ago

Me too! Welcome home brother! We have missed you!

[–]ryan067 61 points62 points ago

WE ARE THE .5%

[–]EnigmaEcstacy 12 points13 points ago

Do you consider horse blood a food of choice?

[–]Someguywithaquestion 15 points16 points ago

Fun fact, the vast majority of Europeans are related to Charlemagne.

Link

[–]TheseIronBones 18 points19 points ago

Fun fact, statistics indicates that you are related to pretty much everyone, much closer in time than you think.

[–]aryon984 1 point2 points ago

Religion indicates we all came from Adam and Eve. Therefore we are all inbred.

[–]crackdog 0 points1 point ago

As a European I am fine with this.

[–]Zeike 0 points1 point ago

Funner fact: Every European, American, and each and every Velociraptor are related to Charlemagne.

[–]bibimbab111 54 points55 points ago

As a former history major I just realized now what a great subject this would've made for a senior thesis.

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points ago

Not really. You don't have to go back that far in history and you have a decent probability of being related to almost everyone.

Genghis Khan lived about 800 years ago. Let's assume that a generation procreates about every 20 years. So, that's 40 generations. If we assume no inter-breeding, etc., that would mean you would have 1.1x1012 ancestors at that time. That's about ten times the number of people than have ever existed. Obviously, the actual dynamics of procreation are more complicated.

Edit: Comical misspelling.

[–]Mooseheaded 41 points42 points ago

inter-breading...

So like ... you put the breadsticks inside the pita pocket?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

Exactly.

[–]abledanger 1 point2 points ago

Now you're playing with grains.

[–]obso_lee7 5 points6 points ago

Which is why it would make a great senior thesis. You don't choose something that everyone already knows. You research something new.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

You research something new.

What's the "something new" that you'd propose researching here? Especially from a historical standpoint (but also from a biological/scientific standpoint), there's nothing much new here.

[–]GalacticNexus 1 point2 points ago

I read somewhere, linked to from a similar conversation as this, that everyone that was alive in Europe in 1400 (I think that was it, but not sure) is related to everyone currently alive in Europe, or no one.

[–]scatterbii 0 points1 point ago

BUT THEN- the Holocaust.

[–]TheSystem_IsDown 0 points1 point ago

The fact that you are related to a lot of people does not disprove the fact that Khan had a shitload of kids, and that you have a much higher probability of being related to him than someone else from his era.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

You're right, which is why I didn't say it did.

[–]TheSystem_IsDown 0 points1 point ago

So we're agreed then that the original point stands, and your comment was completely superfluous. Cool.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Not quite. The original point I replied to was that it would make a good thesis topic for a history degree. I still completely disagree with that statement based on the fact that Genghis Khan's prolific raping is already well known, as is the fact that he is a common ancestor to pretty much all of Asia. Unless paraphrasing Wikipedia passes for thesis material these days. I was simply pointing out the fact that it's not that difficult to find someone who didn't rape a thousand women who is also a common ancestor to a large portion of today's populous just based on simple mathematics.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

This theorized relatedness value becomes less startling as a sexual conquest when one realizes exactly how many people the mongolian dynasty killed. At a time when the world population was estimated to be roughly at 240 million, Ghengis Khan's empire expanded into what is now europe, the middle east, and asia, killing 40 million people in the process. He took a massive chunk of the human gene pool out, significantly increasing the genetic contributions of the mongolians, all of whom were very closely related due to inbreeding. So, I'm sure he had sex with quite a few women, but that value is more a statement on the inbreeding of the mongolians and the absurd casualties caused by the mongolian expansion.

[–]TomCruzader 25 points26 points ago

"Ghengis Khan conquered all of europe, asia, and africa"

no he didn't.

[–]zanzou 25 points26 points ago

Yeah, I laughed when I read that. Might as well have said that Ghengis Khan invented Australia and sailed to the moon.

[–]electric_creamsicle 1 point2 points ago

But that can't be true. Kim Jong-il did all of those things.

[–]zanzou 0 points1 point ago

Just to be clear - more than one person has sailed to the moon. Don't believe that Korean propaganda.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

my bad. faulty memory. it's been edited.

[–]jabedude 7 points8 points ago

Ghengis Khan conquered all of europe, asia, and africa

wut

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

my bad. faulty memory. it's been edited.

[–]Amaelamina 0 points1 point ago

Why on earth did you post this four times?

[–]YouListening 0 points1 point ago

The .5% is that you have a direct male lineage to Ghengis Khan by the way.

[–]DerKuchenMeister 8 points9 points ago

Dan Carlin's HARDCORE HISTORY

[–]CylonInALabcoat 3 points4 points ago

Latest episode Wrath of the Kahns I and it's fantastic.

[–]jaytrade21 2 points3 points ago

and it is only a part one. More to follow soon.

[–]Krivvan 1 point2 points ago

Also highly recommend Death Throes of the Republic.

[–]mefuzzy 2 points3 points ago

Just discovered this few weeks back, anything else similar to it?

[–]pujus 2 points3 points ago

If you're into Roman history, these two are usually well regarded:
History Of Rome
12 Byzantine Rulers

There's also another podcast by Dan Carlin, focused on current politics:
Common Sense

[–]mefuzzy 0 points1 point ago

Cheers, not particularly a fan of his political series but the historical one is bang on what I think I'd enjoy.

His take on the Roman period was fascinating to say the least.

[–]sje46 0 points1 point ago

I actually just finished History of Rome (discovered it a week before it ended after 5 years!), and almost finished all the free Hardcore Histories. I guess 12 Byzantine Rulers is next? Any others you would suggest?

[–]Zelcron 15 points16 points ago

There are a few more, and, while awesome, they aren't really from the Smithsonian.

[–]dsoltesz 2 points3 points ago

Dammit. I would have liked to have seen the Smithsonian handle this better. They could embraced it, prepared for it, and taken advantage of the free attention without coming off as uptight prudes. Once the box was opened, there's no putting everything back. Might as well ride it with grace.

I'm Irish so I don't think that applies to me

[–]turchx 26 points27 points ago

Actually it does anyway

[–]heresyourhardware 0 points1 point ago

You should look up Niall of the Nine Hostages, most fecund man in Irish history, and possibly second worldwide after Genghis Khan.

[–]LeGarretteBong 2 points3 points ago

I, a red-headed jew, am related to Genghis Khan but didn't know it until about ten years ago. Imagine my surprise when walking into my extended family reunion...

[–]powerpuffgirl 2 points3 points ago

I wouldn't call rape hardcore.

[–]Soljah 22 points23 points ago

how many times must I see this reposted?

[–]wingie 52 points53 points ago

All of history is a repost.

[–]heavyfuture121 31 points32 points ago

"Those who don't learn from history are bound to repost it."

[–]wingie 10 points11 points ago

All of history is a repost.

[–]thewhoiam 4 points5 points ago

All the world's a stage,

And all the Redditors are merely reposters.

[–]OneTinSoldier 1 point2 points ago

"Those who don't learn from history are bound to repost it."

[–]seventowerdays 2 points3 points ago

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repost it.

[–]mxmm 1 point2 points ago

I know this is pedantic and perhaps this is misguided, but is there anything that cites the 0.5% chance? I feel like if he has millions of surviving descendants, he would almost immediately have the [almost] the entire world as his descendant. I would think this would especially be true in today's internationally oriented world. Even if this 0.5% figure is true, wouldn't it expand extremely quickly over the next 100 years or so?

[–]DevinTheGrand 2 points3 points ago

Everyone from Europe is descended from Charlemagne. So you don't even need to have had thousands of children for this to be true. It's probable that pretty much everyone with a single European or Asian ancestor is related to Genghis Khan, 0.5% is an extreme low ball.

[–]Rumorad 0 points1 point ago

Seems like sensationalism to me, too. It has been maybe 30 or more generations since then so that means 0.5% seems incredibly low actually and even a small number of children should easily mean hundreds of millions of descendants.

[–]cl3v3rus3rname 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, if you live in Mongolia.

[–]DevinTheGrand 0 points1 point ago

0.5% is actually extremely low. It's probable that every human with an European or Asian ancestor is related to Genghis Khan, putting it at around a 60-70% chance you are related to him.

[–]asdfghjkl92 0 points1 point ago

i heard 1 in 6 people, 0.5% seems like it would be true of almost anyone who had a few kids in the middle ages.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

.5% ? that's huge.

[–]katycat55 0 points1 point ago

Here is a better representation, it is estimated every 1 in 200 people alive atm are related to him.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

What about American's not of Asian descent?

[–]katycat55 0 points1 point ago

What would that have anything to do with it? Obviously Americans not of asian descent wouldn't have his genes but doesn't change the fact, it just means a lot of those that do are in the areas he conquered. Still means 1 in 200 people have his genes

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Oh forgive me, I thought you meant 1 in 200 people on this entire planet had his gene's....

[–]Krivvan 1 point2 points ago

if I had 50 red balls on one side of a box and 50 blue balls on the other side of the box that still means that 1 in 2 balls in the box are red.

[–]Liberalguy123 1 point2 points ago

Stop using apostrophes like that. Christ.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Yes! Annoyed you!!

[–]katycat55 0 points1 point ago

That is what I meant! But where those people are concentrated are only the areas Genghis Khan conquered. For example it is estimated that 16 million males carry a Y chromosome that can be traced backed to Khan, just so happens all those males live in former mongol areas.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Sweet

[–]DevinTheGrand 0 points1 point ago

The actual figure is probably closer to 65%.

[–]TheDudeAmI 1 point2 points ago

Dan Carlin did an awesome podcast about Ghengis Khan. Highly recommended.

[–]bue_row_krat 1 point2 points ago

Fuck genghis khan, murderer and rapist just like Mohammed and Tamerlane.

[–]Grimlock69 1 point2 points ago

Bret micheals also has a pet clothing line... Your argument is invalid

[–]M0b1u5 1 point2 points ago

In fact, the probability is more than 70%.

My family tree goes back solidly to 937AD. If you look at the number of ancestors you have by the time you get back to 1000AD, that number is about 12 times the population of the planet.

Pretty much all it takes is one asian, and one black man to travel 1000 years ago - and you're related to them directly.

Certainly all humans are descended from a group of no more than about 200 people approximately 100,000 years ago. And the intertwining on the human line has been going on since then.

I would guess that there are no humans alive today who could claim an ancestor that no other human had.

[–]cohrt 0 points1 point ago

how does it go that far back?

[–]DumbMuscle 1 point2 points ago

I'm half Polish, with my grandmother's family from far enough west of Poland that the Mongols got that far. My chances are considerably higher!

Plus the other side of my family is from Yorkshire, so I'm probably a fusion of Mongol and Viking!

[–]Arkanicus 2 points3 points ago

You probably have a raping skill over 9000!

[–]toodrunktofuck 1 point2 points ago

Do they have even one yota of self respect?

[–]sefert 2 points3 points ago

Hard core history with Dan carlin is covering Kahn now. Highly recommended podcast.

[–]Jeoffry_Baratheon 2 points3 points ago

"Kahn" is a title, not a name...

[–]PushTheLittleDaisies 4 points5 points ago

He raped and impregnated terrified women all over eurasia, that's so totally hardcore, bro.

[–]loch_ness_lobster 2 points3 points ago

Can't argue with Ween... but what you said about Ghengis makes him extremely hardcore.

[–]Commode 5 points6 points ago

yeah, Brett Michaels is crazy like that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Then again, we all share a common ancestor, so we're all related

[–]IHeartPallets 1 point2 points ago

-" You're related to Genghis Kahn? Thats so cool, how?" -"Well you see a long time ago, one of my ancestors was, um... raped"

[–]slash178 0 points1 point ago

What agency? This is great.

[–]letdowntourist 2 points3 points ago

I've a sneaking suspicion this is student work.

[–]Cintax 0 points1 point ago

It was a student art project. It was never an actual campaign by the Smithsonian.

[–]beerbitches 0 points1 point ago

I wanna know how many women ghengis was with!!

[–]internetguy789 0 points1 point ago

Does any one have the whole set ?

[–]MAGNUM777 0 points1 point ago

being Chinese, this percentage is probably significantly higher for me

[–]load_up_on_hummus 0 points1 point ago

So can someone calculate a rough estimate of how many people khan had sex with?

[–]JerryMau5 0 points1 point ago

So ummm, im mongolian

[–]Spiro_Agnew 0 points1 point ago

NEWT GINGRICH CHEATED ON THREE OF HIS EX WIVES

REPUBLICAN HARDCORE

[–]GrandmasterPotato 0 points1 point ago

Read that as 50%

[–]facetothedawn 0 points1 point ago

If by "got with" they mean rape - then yes

[–]IcyNudibranch 0 points1 point ago

Same with Ramses II of Egypt, though I'd presume that percentage is much, much smaller.

[–]DrDreampop 0 points1 point ago

Bret Michaels has a pretty good flavor of Snapple. And it's only 10 calories! I don't think Genghis Khan can top that.

[–]Ragnalypse 0 points1 point ago

Smithonian reposting reddit content? Come on, they can't be that desperate.

[–]spoleto 0 points1 point ago

Right now on Bret Michaels Wikipedia page, it has him born as Bret Michaels McPooPoo. I had never heard of him before this post, so I can only ASSUME it's a joke...

[–]happy_jihad 0 points1 point ago

Technically, everybody is related to everyone else. We are all cousins.

[–]Stillwatch 0 points1 point ago

Fuck yea! Uncle Ghengis....

[–]JonathanWarner 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't ethnicity play a role in my likelihood of being related to him? Surely in Asia the chances are significantly higher.

[–]Nucking-Futs 0 points1 point ago

But if you arent asian, that number drops significantly.

[–]thratty 0 points1 point ago

All these Historically Hardcore images are really cool, but there were only a few of them. How many times could they possibly be reposted?

[–]audacious1 0 points1 point ago

[–]senoritabrandita 0 points1 point ago

So approximately 35 million people alive today are his descendants. I like the maths.

[–]rice_bowl 0 points1 point ago

There is a 100% chance that I have seen this posted here at least 3 times.

[–]malefizer 0 points1 point ago

I have two parents wo have two parents, makes 4 ancestors in the 2nd generation if Mr. Khan lived around 33 generation before me the people in this generation I would be related to are 233= 8.5 m people. which where not there. ;-P

[–]Zorbotron 0 points1 point ago

Assuming an average of 25 years per generation we are roughly 32 generations removed from Ghengis Khan. Shouldn't the probability we are related to ANYONE from that era be pretty high?

[–]nick041 0 points1 point ago

They should just say Brett Michael's is a douchebag.

[–]YouListening 0 points1 point ago

No, no, no. There is a .5% chance that you have a direct male lineage to Ghengis Khan.

[–]sydneygamer 0 points1 point ago

7% if you live in South East Asia (notice that that is not 0.7, it's 7).

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

This is some seriously good advertising for learning and stuff. And it's so true, real history is awesome.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

HAHAHAHA don't forget Bret Michaels now makes dog clothing BWAHAHAHAHAHA what a fuckin sellout.

[–]Zeike 0 points1 point ago

This just in from science:

Unless you're from another planet, there's a 100% chance you're related to Genghis Khan.

Just for the record, if my math isn't wrong, that should be 350,000,000 people. A large majority of which are living in Asia.

The statement of Ghengis Khan is false.. it was propaganda. Im not getting into it with more details because if i argued every point on the internet id have a full head of gray.

[–]mullownium 0 points1 point ago

No, not just related. There's a 0.5% chance you're a fucking descendant of his.

[–]theheartofgold 0 points1 point ago

I loved that episode of Radiolab.

[–]Creag 0 points1 point ago

This is ridiculous the farther back you go the more likely you are related to the individual. Also Relevant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3sTzLXtojo

To be fair, Genghis Khan also killed a lot of men as well. Pretty easy to spread the seed when you destroy the competition. One of history's greatest pimps indeed.

any particular reason you posted this four times?

[–]turchx -1 points0 points ago

NOW HOLD ON HERE. This is incorrect in two ways:

1) Genghis Khan raped women (pointed out by FleeterHelms)

and

2) There's a 100% chance we're related to Genghis Khan as with all other living things as we all originated from a single organism---NOW HOLD ON---if that sounds too out of the way for you and absurd, then what about Ghengis Khan's parents, siblings, cousins etc. and their individual offspring, certainly the more accurate thing to say is that there's a .5% chance you're descended from him

[–]alexmace 1 point2 points ago

Not sure why you're being down voted, because you are technically correct.

Everyone is related to Genghis Kahn. I believe the poster actually means there's a .5% chance you are descended from Genghis Kahn.

i have a friend who's last name is Kahn. is it safe to say he's one of Genghis' descendants ?

[–]Krivvan 0 points1 point ago

Nope, since Kahn is a title.

[–]TacoSalad33 0 points1 point ago

Well I guess it is accurate. I am actually related to him, through marriage though.

If I remember correctly my grand uncle who was the head historian of Connecticut before he passed away, he said I am related through blood to a French Princess who was forced into marriage to him at a young age. I still love History!
