My dad asked me why I had a lighter and I told him it was to light ladies' cigarettes.

He told me I shouldn't date girls who smoke.

I told him I was just looking to get laid.

Never spoke of it again.

[–]MongoAbides 77 points78 points ago

If true, that's a surprisingly smooth answer.

[–]WhyHellYeah 31 points32 points ago

I was 21 at the time, but yep. Went over well. Didn't openly tell my dad about smoking weed until I was about 28. He didn't want to try it.

[–]MongoAbides 1 point2 points ago

By the time I tried weed I was an adult anyway so it didn't really matter.

[–]karmavorous 46 points47 points ago

What's worse is when one of your parents come to you and ask if you have a lighter (to light a pilot light or something) and before you can realize the implications of your actions, you whip one right out of your pocket... and it says "A friend with weed is a friend indeed." on it.

My dad pocketed that one. He laughed his ass off at it, but then stole my sweet weed lighter.

[–]Anomander 19 points20 points ago

That, my friend, is why you stick to the classic blank lighters.

The habit of playing Prometheus is pretty hard to override, so it's safer to have a lighter you can afford to have your boss or your folks see.

[–]srob101 22 points23 points ago

But I got a really cute kitty lighter... it makes me happy...

Edit: Added picture!

[–]karmavorous 4 points5 points ago

I didn't even actually buy that lighter. I tried to explain that to my dad, I think that's part of why he laughed. It was seriously a joke that me and my ent friends were passing around. We'd hide it somewhere in each others' cars and houses. It was like a curse if you had it.

Of all the cannabis slogans I'd buy a lighter with, "Friends with weed..." is at the bottom of the list.

Needless to say, my father didn't believe that either...

[–]professional_here 12 points13 points ago

If she smokes, she pokes.

[–]MudHouse 10 points11 points ago

Same reason I always used.

[–]Raidersfan666 1 point2 points ago

I use one of those extended lighters for my bong. Not only does it allow you ultimate control and comfort when lighting bowls, but if Parent's ask it's for the grill. Provided you have a grill...

[–]DillonMcD -1 points0 points ago

I string the marimbas at my school, i just say that i need them to burn the tips of the strings for all the marimbas..

[–]sindustrial777 84 points85 points ago

Ah fireworks. Much safer than weed

[–]marinclaric 13 points14 points ago

Dont forget cliff diving as well

[–]Steined 8 points9 points ago

Fireworks are Illegal in my state too. Yet the answer would work for me too...

[–]Sir_Jeremiah 0 points1 point ago

Colorado?

[–]Steined 0 points1 point ago

NY

[–]MansHumanity 25 points26 points ago

incense

[–]juicyJ03 15 points16 points ago

bonfires can also be an excuse.

[–]montroller 16 points17 points ago

Am I the only one whose parents would be more concerned if I told them I was lighting fireworks and bonfires as opposed to smoking with friends?

[–]snowskier 22 points23 points ago

You're obviously not from the south

[–]Chasincows 13 points14 points ago

conservative parents say no

[–]bakedaslays 5 points6 points ago

Probably.

[–]verteUP 1 point2 points ago

You must live in a bereft place.

[–]montroller 1 point2 points ago

I have never heard anyone describe California as bereft... maybe not the best word choice but thanks for using it because now I know what it means. :)

[–]OfThriceAndTen 19 points20 points ago

I use this argument.

Man has struggled with lighting fires for tens of thousands of years. I right now, in my pocket, have fire. You never know when you'll need it.

[–]LiquidB0Omerang 2 points3 points ago

This is the best answer ever.

[–]Quasm 0 points1 point ago

Horribly made, but somehow that just makes it even better. Thank you for this, it has made my day.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]OfThriceAndTen -2 points-1 points ago

Just a time traveling machine.

[–]crystal_castles 6 points7 points ago

I've done this EXACT same thing. Evaded my parents with the ol' "Fireworks" number

[–]maroonlife 5 points6 points ago

I tell them that I think it's always a safe idea to be able to start a fire. Wether i get lost, dying of hypothermia, or if i need to smoke.

[–]StarshipAI 4 points5 points ago

I was a single digit-old kid when Aliens came out. I vowed to forever carry a lighter for the rest of my life when Ripley use one to set off the fire alarm, thus saving their lives. Aliens.

[–]Ourliv 6 points7 points ago

I also keep a Swiss Army Knife on me nearly all the time. I say I like to be prepared. Truth is, both are quite useful outside weed.

[–]TheMagicStik 7 points8 points ago

I buy lighters all the time, didn't know there was an age limit (16 Florida)

[–]bsonk 0 points1 point ago

There isn't. Some chains have a store policy they enforce where they lump lighters in with tobacco products and you have to be 18 to buy them. They lose business to stores that don't have this policy.

[–]Bee-Yonce 6 points7 points ago

He is holding that word perfectly.

[–]skurhse -1 points0 points ago

left pinky is behind the s, so no.

/buzzkillington

[–]Bee-Yonce 1 point2 points ago

I appreciate your attention to detail sir.

[–]skurhse 1 point2 points ago

in other words, Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder. :P. ~uptokes!~

[–]HollaWho 2 points3 points ago

Or if you have your own place, and your parents visit. The lighter is for the pilot light.

[–]limesonapony 2 points3 points ago

I had about 8 lighters in my cars at one point (yay costco!). My mom went into my car for some reason, came back with all my lighters and was all "I KNEW it! DRUGS!" My excuse was that I needed them at the barn (I have a horse and was there for a couple hours daily) to burn ticks and light the ends of ropes on fire so they don't fray. But the most important reason is to ignite a small equinopin that you use to make the pastern stand in a more upright position, aiding in the collection and scope during extensions. All of that was a) completely false and half made up words and b) made no sense at all. She never asked again.

[–]Drgrthumb 45 points46 points ago

you know you might not be old enough to smoke weed when.........

[–]crisk21 40 points41 points ago

Oh yes I forgot about the non-existent age limit for smoking weed.

[–]Golhec 38 points39 points ago

When you cannot buy a lighter or smoking material (18+) then its a pretty good indication that you probably shouldn't be smoking weed. Of course, there is no law on what age you have to be due to the act its self being illegal.

[–]kyle_rayner_ion 39 points40 points ago

We can buy lighters at any age in Texas

[–]gandalf5166 11 points12 points ago

Except at 711. They won't sell them to minors(or at least, they're not supposed to).

[–]prose-before-hoes 6 points7 points ago

In CT, I'm 16 and I buy lighters all the time. I've only been carded once, when there was a new guy, and when I said I didn't have a card he was like, "whatever, buy it."

[–]marinclaric 6 points7 points ago

Im now smarter

[–]Dammit182 4 points5 points ago

Really? I once got carded whilst buying a pack of lighters in Texas. And the guy behind me said "Whoawhoawhoa... Theres an age limit on buying lighters?!"

[–]kyle_rayner_ion 1 point2 points ago

Haha, you didn't get in any sort of trouble though right? The youngest age that I bought lighters was 14, so I am sure they do not sell to 9 year olds. Anyways, about a fourth to third of restraunts, still give out match books (preferred method of badassery). Pick them up as you walk out.

[–]Dammit182 2 points3 points ago

No, I was 18 and had my ID. And that sounds like a good idea. There have been too many times when I couldn't find a lighter in my house and have had to resort to matches.

[–]Kenster180 4 points5 points ago

And Oregon

[–]Golhec 3 points4 points ago

Well being from the UK the laws here are 18+, I realise this will be different in other countries and will vary state to state in the US.

[–]kyle_rayner_ion 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, laws will be laws people will be people, and ents will be ents. I love how we all come from different walks of life, and still can meet together (figuratively of course) and discuss a common interest. Have a good one! :)

[–]Zomgski -1 points0 points ago

Definitely not true, but good try.

[–]kyle_rayner_ion 1 point2 points ago

Its not like this is a far fetched idea. I have never been asked, and never knew it could be illegal until I read this thread.

[–]SheldonFreeman 5 points6 points ago

Lighting birthday candles at a family member's party. "Where's a lighter...?" Me, not thinking: "Here ya go." "...why do you need a lighter?" "Uhh...I don't know?"

I immediately assumed it was a situation like that. Why would you assume OP was asking a parent to purchase the lighter? I would think that's far less probable.

[–]Aj45 5 points6 points ago

There are definitely kids under 18 that are mature enough to make the decision to smoke and handle it. In general though, 18 is a pretty good "rule."

[–]BuckeyeBentley 6 points7 points ago

Just because you can/cannot buy lighters or tobacco doesn't mean your parents would approve of it. My Mom would probably flip her lid ten times harder if she knew I smoked cigarettes over knowing I smoked weed. And I'm 24.

[–]Golhec 0 points1 point ago

I though the original post was more aimed at having to think of an excuse of needing a lighter, which would only apply to younger ents. I smoke both cigarettes and weed. I smoke openly in front of my parents. My mother knows that I smoke weed and is fine with it, my father has an idea but I cant imagine he'd be happy with it. I'm 21.

[–]Skeeow 1 point2 points ago

When I was younger (~17) I was buying a lighter at a gas station and the lady at the counter said she didn't like selling lighters to minors, but it was legal so she did it anyways. The guy behind me offered to buy me a blunt if I needed it, but I just told him that I preferred glass and walked out of the store.

[–]thisiscameron 11 points12 points ago

16 year old here, and I buy lighters all the time. I can't buy cigarettes, rolling papers, any of that shit but nobody ever tries to card me when I'm just buying a lighter. And if weed were legal, I highly doubt that 18 would be the age to buy it, it would be 21.

Personally, I think if someone is old enough to afford all of their own trees, then they're old enough to smoke.

Now, enough with my little "underage" opinion. Let the downvotes commence

edit - The way I view it, it should have to do with maturity, not age, and those 2 things do NOT go hand in hand.

[–]Aj45 2 points3 points ago

Except that when you're a teenager you spend a lot of money on trees that you should probably be saving. I'm not saying all teenagers are bad with their money, just maybe a little less responsible sometimes. This is from experience, I'm 17 and whenever I get a paycheck the first thing I want to buy is a fat sack of weed. It takes a lot of self control to budget it properly.

[–]thisiscameron 6 points7 points ago

A small percentage of my paycheck goes toward weed, and I don't understand how this has anything to do with being a teenager. At any age, there's always going to be something else you could've spent your cash on that benefits you differently.

[–]Aj45 -1 points0 points ago

It doesn't matter if I spend all my paycheck on weed or cheeseburgers. The point is that, as a teenager, you don't make as much as someone with a full time job, you aren't as familiar with the concept of budgeting/saving, and it is easy to blow it all on something that is very appealing at the time but doesn't have long term value. I'm not questioning your ability personally, I spend money on weed too. I just don't think that it's a valid argument that because you can afford it, you should be able so smoke it when there are so many other factors.

[–]thisiscameron 2 points3 points ago

I can see why you think that way, but I still disagree, different views of life I guess. I always think that people should be allowed to make their own decisions as long as it doesn't harm anyone else. If someone wants to do something stupid, I'd warn them of the downsides but it's not in me to stop them from doing it. edit - To a certain extent though, if a 6 year old wanted to try heroin and I had control over whether they did it or not, I wouldn't let them.

[–]Pugduck77 1 point2 points ago

Odd that you jump straight to heroin. Are you implying that you'd allow a 6 year old to smoke weed?

[–]MongoAbides 1 point2 points ago

Let the downvotes commence

Any time people ask for downvotes I give em...

Anyway.

You need to face the fact that your brain just isn't fully developed. It's not that weed is horrible for you, or that you can't be responsible enough to use it, but you just can't be trusted well enough to make any serious decisions yet. To have that limited decision making while inebriated is worse still. It's just not an ideal condition for someone at a young age. Some occasional weed at a party isn't so bad, but there are better things for you to do with your money....like save it up, because you'll need it pretty badly in the not too distant future, in a way that you probably can't fully grasp yet.

That's not condescension either, it's just reality. That's what youth is like for all of us.

[–]SheldonFreeman 0 points1 point ago

Yes people, wait until your mid-20s when your brain is fully developed. (sarcasm...not that it's a bad idea, just that there's nothing special about age 18)

[–]Major_Small 4 points5 points ago

[The prefrontal cortex] gives an individual the capacity to exercise “good judgment” when presented with difficult life situations. Brain research indicating that brain development is not complete until near the age of 25, refers specifically to the development of the prefrontal cortex.

Source

Hate to tell you, but your idea of sarcasm is closer to reality than you think.

[–]SheldonFreeman 1 point2 points ago

I suppose I wasn't clear, and he didn't specifically mention age 18 either. So I guess I was attacking a straw man...but I've seen people say "Your brain isn't fully developed" and "Wait until age 18" in the same breath, even while knowing the brain doesn't reach maturity until your mid-20s. You certainly never see anyone say "Avoid all mind-altering substances until age 25." My parents are anti-weed and they put me on concerta all day for several years. My point is, if you're going to tell teens not to smoke weed, hopefully you're not under 25 and smoking or drinking ever. I was being sarcastic by suggesting that the average person might choose to wait til age 25 before drinking alcohol or smoking weed. I'd rather share experiences with the rest of my culture than wait until most people are settling down, for what could very well be a negligible difference in brain function. During the years when people are making connections and trying to advance in their careers, you're not going to parties, or you're going and having an awful time because drunk people look like total idiots when you're sober. There are downsides to waiting til 25 is all I'm saying. Maybe it would benefit you if you're hoping to be a bodybuilder or work for an anti-drug campaign.

[–]Major_Small 0 points1 point ago

Ah, gotcha. Misread your post. I see what you meant now.

[–]MongoAbides 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, 18 isn't really special at all, but at the point that your life is now handed over to you entirely, it may as well be.

I don't mind some occasional pot, I feel like I indicated that, but I think it's a bad idea for kids to worry about spending their money on weed.

[–]thisiscameron 1 point2 points ago

I disagree completely. I have no responsibilities at this age besides school, and I'm able to simultaneously smoke and get good grades, so it doesn't even effect that. This is the only age where I won't need my money for other things, such as rent and food, as my parents provide these things. I'm still saving up money also, it's not like I spend 100% of my money on weed. Sounds like you must've had a different experience as a youth and that's why you think this way, but please try to speak for yourself.

[–]MongoAbides 2 points3 points ago

This is the only age where I won't need my money for other things, such as rent and food, as my parents provide these things.

Which is why it is such a good idea to continue not spending much of it.

Sounds like you must've had a different experience as a youth and that's why you think this way, but please try to speak for yourself.

Was I speaking for Kevin across the street?

The human brain isn't even fully developed at the age of 18. Teenagers are literally less capable of long term decision making.

[–]bakedaslays 0 points1 point ago

I really feel like half the people on r/trees that say, "You shouldn't be smoking as a teenager" smoked as a teenager.. I mean that's when I started smoking, my parents started smoking, and most of my friends started smoking.

[–]MongoAbides 0 points1 point ago

It's not when I started smoking, and I'm kinda glad because it would have wrecked what little money i had, as a teen, and it wouldn't have helped my school problems.

[–]bakedaslays 0 points1 point ago

I know that not everyone started as a teen. I didn't mean for it to sound like I was suggesting that you did, sorry. But what I know is myself and many other people that smoked a lot in their teens turned out fine, unless it held me back from my full capabilities that I am not aware of, if so I don't really mind because I'm content with my life and my past. In my opinion, it all comes down to the person.

[–]MongoAbides 0 points1 point ago

The way I look at it, if a kid can't even get his own lighter, he probably has more important shit to worry about. If I had kids and they occasionally got high at a friend's house or something, that's not the worst thing in the world. But I feel like it's a waste of their money, and the fact that they're already in a position to make bad judgement calls doesn't endear me to the idea of hindering that further.

People are ultimately going to smoke if they want to, we're all just going to have different opinions on what constitutes responsible.

[–]bakedaslays 1 point2 points ago

Agreed. There are a lot of those kids now with the mentality "Yay weed is totally ok, so let's just smoke all the time and not worry about our grades or future."

[–]Valadar917 0 points1 point ago

I don't believe you can make these decisions based on someone's chronological age alone. Some people are more mature and developed than others, that's just a fact. I'm more mature than some 20 year olds and I'm 17. Not to be arrogant though.

[–]MongoAbides 0 points1 point ago

Right, but the human brain isn't developing, even in to the 20s. The young human mind is literally less capable of long term decision making. Yes, person to person there are variations. I known grown adults that shouldn't be trusted with their own lives, and yet they have kids. But it's a lot easier to just limit the ways people can detriment themselves until they're at peak capacity to deal with it.

[–]Valadar917 0 points1 point ago

People will use it despite there being an age limit though. We just need to teach responsible use and not go the abstinence-only route.

[–]MongoAbides 1 point2 points ago

We just need to teach responsible use and not go the abstinence-only route.

I don't think disagrees here.

[–]RoamingLoser -3 points-2 points ago

Why would it be 21? 18 is much more likely, seeing as how cigarettes are at 18

[–]HairyDuck 7 points8 points ago

I feel like 21 is far more likely, because the age at which you're allowed to buy alcohol is 21.

[–]Sttmb12r -5 points-4 points ago

What do you need lighters for with alcohol? Motlov?

[–]HairyDuck 1 point2 points ago

I mean buying weed when it's legal will probably have an age requirement of 21, not lighters.

[–]Forestisinthetrees 0 points1 point ago

*Molotov

[–]impossiblyirrelevant 2 points3 points ago

Marijuana is (I believe this is the correct term) a mind-altering substance, just like alcohol. Therefore, the age would most likely be 21, even though both alcohol and cigarettes are far more dangerous that weed.

[–]RoamingLoser 0 points1 point ago

Yes, that would make sense. I agree, then.

[–]conrad141 -1 points0 points ago

Cigarettes are not more dangerous than weed. More harmful? Yes. Dangerous; no.

[–]Aj45 2 points3 points ago

If by dangerous, you mean the immediate effect it has on you, then I disagree. Weed doesn't make you want to go do dumb shit in the way alcohol does. And it alters your mind more than cigarettes but not necessarily in a dangerous way. Plus, I think he used dangerous having the same definition as harmful, which you used.

[–]conrad141 1 point2 points ago

I believe alcohol is more dangerous than weed, but cigarettes have never, or if so extremely rarely caused a persons death by means other than degrading their health over time, while there are still many people who die as a result of people being high and doing stupid things such as driving. Dangerous means that there is a risk of something being harmful, not that it is harmful. Cigarettes are harmful 100% of the time, but hardly ever dangerous. Weed is rarely harmful, but includes a slight risk with misused, making it dangerous.

[–]Stratigon13 1 point2 points ago

Cigarettes are dangerous because they degrade health over time. I would argue that weed degrades health slower (if used with a bong or preferably a vaporizer) making it less dangerous than cigarettes. Another concern is driving while high which even though I have never had a problem with it, I am fairly sure that your reaction time is slowed. So as long as driving while high is illegal, i would say weed is safer.

[–]el_lobo 0 points1 point ago

You must be some sort of morality expert. For real, there is no youngest age, it's about maturity. And I'm not gonna allow society to put a limit on it in my mind.

[–]SnazzyNannersz[S] -2 points-1 points ago

I can buy all the materials even weed from smoke shops. Hiding it from my parents is the only challenge and there is no age limit so yeah.

[–]Rountree85 -2 points-1 points ago

Work on your grammar and sentence structure.

[–]christhelucky -1 points0 points ago

Your in a forum that's subject is weed, and you being a grammar nazi? Really?

[–]Rountree85 0 points1 point ago

You're in a forum in which the subject matter is weed and you're being a grammar Nazi? Really?

Fixed that for you. There's no need to sound like a dumb ass.

[–]SnazzyNannersz[S] -2 points-1 points ago

No smoking is awesome shut up.

[–]BbCortazan 2 points3 points ago

There isn't an actual age limit on it obviously since it's currently illegal for everyone (in most places) and I admit I started smoking shortly before my 18th birthday. That being said, smoking weed while you're under 18 an your brain is still developing is probably not the best idea.

[–]cbdckr 0 points1 point ago

Actually there is, and anybody aged 1-999 can not legally smoke in the Federal United States

[–]10ioio 9 points10 points ago

I can't wait until my 1000th birthday!

[–]ESmitty8 2 points3 points ago

Incense.

[–]skeletorcares 2 points3 points ago

How about because fire is the most versatile tool in the world?

[–]BeerPowered 1 point2 points ago

And the funniest toy.

[–]BurningKarma 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, you can burn things with it, and uh.... well, other stuff too I guess.

[–]Insomn 2 points3 points ago

"Hey Insomn, why do you keep going to the shop for matches?"

"Uhmm... We're having quite a few BBQs, we need them for that".

God I love(d) summer.

[–]bookzilla 2 points3 points ago

Why are you using matches? Ffs, get yourself a lighter!

[–]Insomn 0 points1 point ago

Funnily enough, I had a Clipper for my entological fancies. Loved that little bastard.

Lost it on a midnight session with friends. :(

[–]bookzilla 1 point2 points ago

Dude, that is a sad, sad story.

[–]jetpackfuel 0 points1 point ago

Personally, I like using matches to smoke more than I like using lighters. You don't get much of a gas-like taste when you take a hit...

[–]onbin 1 point2 points ago

I grew up with candles and incense in my room, so they've always let me keep lighters up there.

[–]snowsoftJ4C 1 point2 points ago

I say it's for burning off loose strands on clothing so I don't have to rip them out.

[–]Golhec 5 points6 points ago

I think if you're not old enough to legally buy a lighter then you shouldn't be smoking weed.

[–]MrPudding28 8 points9 points ago

I went into a store at 15 and bought a zippo, bottle of fluid, and a pack of flints no questions asked.

[–]skeletorcares 1 point2 points ago

That's not what he's saying, he's saying his parents see his lighter (already purchased).

[–]getajerb 4 points5 points ago

This guy had super ancient alien weed

[–]Quasitoko 2 points3 points ago

Good excuse for the one time of year when it works haha

[–]GrammarBeImportant 1 point2 points ago

Two. Also works around new years.

[–]Quasitoko 0 points1 point ago

Noted.

[–]masterofdarko 4 points5 points ago

I had my lighter sitting on my desk and my mom asks me the exact same thing

[–]HATERS_SHALL_HATE 0 points1 point ago

What did you tell her?

[–]Katalidae 1 point2 points ago

Being female, when my mom asks why I have a lighter, "It's to help soften my eyeliner so it will go on more smoothly." She just gives me a funny look and goes on about her business.

[–]ProG87 0 points1 point ago

Cobwebs.

[–]monkeylard 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I uhh, like to play with uhhh... lighters!

[–]spirit-of-the-times 0 points1 point ago

I just say I need them to light incense

[–]obstreperousartist 0 points1 point ago

shoulda got a mflb :}

[–]fiddyfell 0 points1 point ago

Incense for me buddy, I burn a lot of that stuff any way.

[–]EPIC_BAGELS9000 0 points1 point ago

Why not just drive to a gas station and buy one yourself?

[–]JfreakingR 0 points1 point ago

My friends think I'm MacGyver, I can't disappoint them.

[–]Grunnieking 0 points1 point ago

When I told my parents what it was for, bonfire.

[–]jedijesus 0 points1 point ago

How does one become an Ancient Aliens expert?

[–]sourapples 0 points1 point ago

"Campfires"

[–]kkkilla 0 points1 point ago

This would have never been an option for me seeing as my hometown never has sold fireworks. Feelsbadman

[–]realmsofatyro 0 points1 point ago

my mom wouldn't accept candles. yeah, she wanted me to use a candle lighter.

[–]putcreativenamehere 0 points1 point ago

Done it before. Awkward, but not hard.

[–]mh33zy 0 points1 point ago

I am actually used to carry a lighter since I was 11 or 12(didn't even thought I would ever smoke in my life, I was still a believer of all the anti drugs propaganda), just because it can be very useful from time to time.(I also used to be somewhat pyromaniac)

My parents would be more pissed off with me playing with fireworks than smoking. But both are so fun!

Honestly, this is half true.

[–]sogwennn 0 points1 point ago

My mum asked me that yesterday. "Because. It comes in handy." Before that it was "I like fire :D"

Heh heh. My friend and I used 'fireworks' as a code term for trees on July 4th when talking around my little brother. Heh heh.

[–]vinegarstrokes420 -1 points0 points ago

Always said I just liked to play with them... guess they were ok with having a pyro son

[–]ichill -1 points0 points ago

I always say it's to burn things, works everytime.

[–]midgent -1 points0 points ago

Why do you tell your parents when you need a lighter?

[–]joeyisexy -3 points-2 points ago

every. single. time.

[–]Doctor_of_Recreation -2 points-1 points ago

Even before I smoked, I always kept a lighter on me. You never know when you'll need fire.
