That really depends on the continuity. The current movie Batman isn't really a brilliant inventor, not by a long shot. Basically, everything he uses is stuff his company has created or something he ordered from another company. As for Tony Stark, he's a brilliant tactician (something he learned from Captain America, as well as his fighting skills), but in the Ultimate universe, I do believe he has quite extensive martial arts training.

Mainly, they're both rich, want to help, and either invent or buy the most awesome toys possible to do that. In Batman's case, he's ALWAYS a badass fighter, in Iron Man's, he's just got a really kickass suit of armor.

Although the money helps, what I like about both heroes, but especially batman, is that they're superheroes basically by force of will. Yes, the money helps. But they're not aliens, not bitten by radioactive spiders, they're human. They're incredibly well equipped humans, but they're still just human. The things they go toe to to with are superhuman, and the things they fight along side are superhuman, but they're not. Iron Man's suit makes him essentially 'super', but while Batman /has/ a lot of gadgets, most of what he really relies on is the fact that he will not give up until he's forcefed you a can of whoopass, and will willingly headbut his way through a brick wall out of sheer determination.
