As a brit who was in the south on the 4th of July wearing a shirt with the union jack on I disagree, I drank so much moonshine and JD I think I got alcohol poisoning.

[–]Rodeostud65 16 points17 points ago

As a Southerner, I like you.

[–]insaniaeternus 8 points9 points ago

I got that response from a lot of people :D

[–]borickard 2 points3 points ago

I read that in a southern accent.

We had a couple Canadians who donned American-flag colored shirts, destroyed a bottle of Jim Beam, and were working on ways to insert the word "like" into their speech.

It's the kind of holiday with mass appeal to cultures who value drinking holidays, such as basically every other English-speaking nation in the world.

Honestly, for me it's more like what you guys probably feel about my grandma's birthday... a sort of 'that's nice for them'.

4th of July is the day America threw a hissy-fit, bought a motorcycle and ran away from home.

Why couldn't you be a good child, like your brother Canada? It's got universal healthcare, gay rights and paid attention in school; it can spell 'colour' and 'favourite' properly.

[–]Newbian12 23 points24 points ago

I know we aren't as well behaved as our goodie two-shoes brother Canada. Who by the way has never had a girlfriend. I'm just saying.

[–]blast4past 1 point2 points ago

I dunno, it looks like it Might start shacking up with Iceland and Greenland.

( they may adopt the Canadian dollar for some reason)

[–]Potential_Pandemic 13 points14 points ago

Actually, most of the Brits (who I work with) I've asked see it as the day they "let us go," instead of it being a day where they lost.

Some have even said that Britain has "never lost a war."

[–]fargin_bastiges 13 points14 points ago

That's the same logic as saying the US didn't lose in Vietnam. Losing political will is tantamount to losing the "regular" way.

[–]CaptainYoshi 4 points5 points ago

I don't really think Britain wanted to lose the colonies.

[–]Hybernative 6 points7 points ago

Britain didn't want to lose the Middle-American colonies, but there were more valuable colonies and closer, more important wars to fight at the time.

[–]wagedomain 5 points6 points ago

People say the same in the US about their wars.

As a Brit living in the US, I like to think of July 4th as the day a bunch of Englishmen came together and built something great.

But then I look around me and wonder what the hell Americans did with what we gave them. :(

[–]kourtbard 0 points1 point ago

They did get us back during the War of 1812, where they burned Washington...

[–]BurningWater -1 points0 points ago

In all fairness we were fighting the French in America mostly. Why continue to go to America to do it if we could just go 21 miles over a channel.

[–]BCP6J9YqYF6xDbB3 -1 points0 points ago

It's the day we disassociated ourselves from you.

[–]MattWilliams_10 4 points5 points ago

Truthfully the day passes by like any other. The only place I hear about it is here on Reddit and even then it's limited.

[–]Danielcdo 0 points1 point ago

I didn't even know 4th of July was USA's independence day before reddit

[–]JakJakAttacks 7 points8 points ago

Fuck that. Any time there are fireworks, BBQ and booze is reason enough to party.

[–]n00bskoolbus 14 points15 points ago

Or every non-american on reddit.

[–]YaroLord 2 points3 points ago

Not just british, but everyone who wasn't born in the states.

[–]Phoequinox 1 point2 points ago

What's the context of this image?

[–]RosieJo 1 point2 points ago

I don't know why they'd care. It's not as though not being attached to you has any effect on their lives. Do Americans like to think that they are plagued by regret and bitterness?

[–]coolbeaNs92 1 point2 points ago

If he's feeling like he doesn't care, then I agree. Only place I heard about the 4th of July celebrations was on Reddit.

[–]enginedriver 2 points3 points ago

To be honest most people here don't even think about it, it's not even a blip on the radar. Sorry to burst your bubble, you'll understand in a hundred years or so.

[–]Tori1313 1 point2 points ago

talked to one who worked on british airways...got awkward when he asked me how i was gonna celebrate.

[–]R7F 1 point2 points ago

The only reason I waited as long as I did for that to load is because I got lost in Colbert's eyes...

[–]69facesoflove 0 points1 point ago

It's a little late, but I feel that way so often I'll let it slide.

[–]Muskers 0 points1 point ago

I thought he was gonna pop it for a sec.

[–]QuiteCross 0 points1 point ago

It'd be more apathy behind the whole 'FREEDOM' and more 'Sweet, fireworks and booze. Why wouldn't I be up for this?'

[–]SlimyTurnips 0 points1 point ago

That about sums it up.

[–]BCP6J9YqYF6xDbB3 0 points1 point ago

As a Brit, I spent my 4th of July in Canada, eh :)

[–]Derpeh 0 points1 point ago

I thought he was going to pop one with his pen

[–]danhendricks 0 points1 point ago

why are we still posting shit about the 4th of July on the 8th?

[–]pacman529 0 points1 point ago

sauce?

[–]dontlookatmyprofile 0 points1 point ago

Losing the US was probably the best thing to happen to the British

[–]CorporateImperialism -4 points-3 points ago

what about americans that stopped buying into patriotic propaganda as 8 year olds?

[–]delboy83uk -3 points-2 points ago

If you just paid us the taxes you owe us you woundnt need to bother with it at all.
