In Alice's defense, she's like 7.

[–]Inessia 12 points13 points ago

and she was not a princess or anything like that

[–]csolisr 0 points1 point ago

Actually, the first game of the Kingdom Hearts saga plays with that very fact.

[–]Inessia 0 points1 point ago

Relevant? No.

[–]feureau 55 points56 points ago

She looks and speaks awfully mature for 7 though...

EDIT: I went looking for the original model for Disney's Alice in Wonderland to find how old she was when they made the film but to no avail. Does anyone know/can find this info?

[–]lightslash53 73 points74 points ago

The book that alice in wonderland is based on a girl that Lewis Carol knew, and she was ten when he started writing the book.

[–]Kogitsune 21 points22 points ago

Right, Alice Liddell. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Liddell#Origin_of_Alice_in_Wonderland

On 4 July 1862, in a rowing boat travelling on the Isis from Folly Bridge, Oxford to Godstow for a picnic outing, 10-year-old Alice asked Charles Dodgson (who wrote under the pen name Lewis Carroll) to entertain her and her sisters, Edith (age 8) and Lorina (age 13), with a story.

[–]iamagainstit 1 point2 points ago

It was also largely written as a metaphorical criticism of the state of theoretical mathematics of the time.

[–]feureau 1 point2 points ago

There's been a theoryhypothesis floating around that Lewis Carroll was actually a pedophile.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Carroll#Suggestions_of_paedophilia

EDIT: I said hypothesis, not that I agree with it or think it's true. My knowledge is limited to that horrible section of wikipedia article. Just wanted to throw it out there to see what people think.

[–]gluskap 63 points64 points ago

Yes, and the theory comes from crackpots and yellow journalists. Carroll was not a pedophile, and accusations that he was are derived from our modern hysterical culture of irrational fear of everything.

Carroll's photography of young girls was openly published for the world, and there was never any suggestion then that there was something wrong with them. But we are stupidly hysterical about child nudity these days.

[–]cantstopthe 44 points45 points ago

In the victorian era, there was a vogue for photographing naked children - it went with that whole cult of childhood thing that they had going on where children were considered to be innately angelic, pure and innocent, and victorian's enjoyed art reflecting and idealising that. There was no sexual connotation.

Without that cultural context, Carroll's pictures would seem odd. But obsession with children was a societal thing.

[–]wonkydonky 15 points16 points ago

cult of childhood thing that they had going on where children were considered to be innately angelic, pure and innocent

Had they like, never met a child before?

In the words of heavy metal god, Dave Mustaine, "There's no one more cruel in this world than children. They'll make fun of you and torment you for the smallest little thing. They're demons." (Largely paraphrased to the best of my memory.)

[–]5omnifer 18 points19 points ago

From what I recall, the Victorian sentimental view of children as little innocent angels was actually kind of progressive and had Rousseau as its original champion.
Formerly, you had a lot of people viewing children as a) objects owned by their parents to be treated as the parent saw fit, and b) proof that humans were born in sin and wickedness and needed harsh measures to become civilized.

[–]orthag 0 points1 point ago

Man isn't born into sin but into social ignorance. Children don't know how to act in a prosocial manner. They say mean things, they blurt out secrets, they blather incessantly, these are things that through life we learn not to do, because society finds it impolite.

[–]CitizenPremier 0 points1 point ago

And some idiots tell kids that honesty is the best policy and that they should never lie. Must be a mindfuck for those kids when they realize how untrue that is.

[–]bastian1343 2 points3 points ago

If kids make fun of you, you can safely blame their surroundings.

If kids are generally being selfish assholes, you can blame being a mammal.

[–]TheWalrusWizard 1 point2 points ago

Do to recent events, I think that "god" title should be demi-god.

[–]Zincorium 2 points3 points ago

You were expecting Victorian 'sensibilities' to actually make sense?

[–]angrystuff 0 points1 point ago

Only the ones they drugged with opiates.

[–]CitizenPremier 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure there were still people jerking it to the pictures though. There have always been masterbators.

[–]manixrock 6 points7 points ago

From the wiki article:

This possibility has underpinned numerous modern interpretations of his life and work, particularly Dennis Potter's play Alice and his screenplay for the motion picture, Dreamchild, Robert Wilson's Alice, and a number of recent biographies, including Michael Bakewell's Lewis Carroll: A Biography (1996), Donald Thomas's Lewis Carroll: A Portrait with Background (1995), and Morton N. Cohen's Lewis Carroll: A Biography (1995). All of these works more or less unequivocally assume that Dodgson was a paedophile

Doesn't sound like "crackpots and yellow journalists".

Or ar we going with "he created something nice, so he can't be a pedo".

[–]gluskap 7 points8 points ago

No, we're going with "there was not a single accusation of pedophilia from his entire lifetime," but a few cranks today have lurid imaginations.

[–]Torger083 2 points3 points ago

Mi'kmaq?

[–]pdx_girl 5 points6 points ago

The theory has much more evidence beyond the multitude of nude photos that he took. He would take long walks alone with the girls even though they were not his relatives. That is a weird interest for a grown man no matter what time period he lived in. He never got married or adopted children of his own. He was friends with little girls but not little boys--he specifically said that he liked 10-year-old girls, not boys or younger girls. Also his relationship with the family of "Alice" suddenly became cold when she was 11. Pages from his diaries were deleted after his death and his family refused to speak about him.

He did have an interest in photography in general, but it was very heavily skewed towards photographing young girls. 50% (~1,500) of his surviving works featured young girls. Even if lots of his works were lost, that's still a hefty number. If he was just doing it as part of a fad to capture their innocence, you'd think that he'd eventually feel that he exhausted the subject or become bored of it and move on. Who takes 1,500 pictures of kids who aren't even their own, especially in a time when taking pictures was difficult and expensive?

I'm not saying that he was necessarily a pedophile. However just because it was a fad then to be non-sexually-interested in children doesn't mean that pedophiles didn't exist too. His actions were not normal for his time.

For example, even then, this was not a normal thing for an adult man to write to a 10-year-old girl (a different one from Alice): "Extra thanks and kisses for the lock of hair. I have kissed it several times - for want of having you to kiss, you know, even hair is better than nothing."

http://www.nytimes.com/1999/04/02/arts/photography-review-girls-loved-him-pedophile-or-not.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2001/oct/29/gender.uk

[–]gluskap 7 points8 points ago

You have skewed things dishonestly. He didn't have some kind of weird fascination with little girls, he was simply close to his friends' children, who were girls. You make it sound like he had dozens of little girl friends. He didn't.

Not a single piece of "evidence" you present is anything but an innocent detail. So he didn't marry or have kids. So what? So his friendship with "Alice's" parents broken down? Happens every day. His family refused to talk to the press? Good for them, I wouldn't want my family talking about me to the press.

Do you know what a pedophile is? They are sexually attracted to children, and some of them sexually assault children, neither of which Carroll was ever once accused of until recently by a bunch of fucking hacks.

[–]pdx_girl 2 points3 points ago

You are the one who is skewing things. For example, the debate over this is not a new creation rising from modern hysteria. It dates back to the early 1930's.

I am showing that there is ambiguity and that the other side does have significant evidence, which include facts that I've listed for you and cited. You haven't given my any proof except that taking nude pictures of kids wasn't terribly unusual in those days.

Do I know whether he was a pedophile? No. Is there evidence that points to him being one? Yes. Is it definitive? No.

[–]crazyoldmarquis 9 points10 points ago

It was the same girl who voiced her: Kathryn Beaumont. She was 14 at the time.

[–]feureau 0 points1 point ago

Awesome. Thank you

[–]Fluttershhy 4 points5 points ago

Well Alice in Wonderland was originally written in the 1800's, so I suspect that most young children would have spoken a bit more... maturely, I guess you could say. Although I don't know for sure. :)

[–]my_name_isnt_clever 2 points3 points ago

wat u tlkn bout

[–]a4moondoggy 1 point2 points ago

best not to dig too deep into that....

[–]narky1 1 point2 points ago

Oh, I actually thought it was an r/trees rating and I was wondering what drugs they had if Alice's adventure only rated a 7/10.

[–]feureau 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the attempts, but I didn't mean the Alice character or whom she was based on, but when Disney made the animated film, they had an Alice model dressed as Alice who will act the entire film and they recorded it and used it as reference. I meant that model.

[–]buddascrayon 0 points1 point ago

There is in fact a "Wonderful World of Disney" episode in which they present the girl who voiced Alice as well as being the physical model she was based on. I believe it's on the DVD of the movie.

[–]elvisliveson 0 points1 point ago

many a 7 year old is more mature than full-blown grown ups baby-sat by a tv.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

This is just how the upperclass talk. Their education starts sooner, they are exposed to a large vocabulary from a young age. They are primed for life, primed for intelligence. Primed to succeed in this world they have created.

[–]feureau 0 points1 point ago

I'm reading this as my brain picture you speaking with the thousand yard stare...

... the shit you've seen... it's like tears in the rain...

[–]AliasUndercover 2 points3 points ago

Sorry, if Alice found love, Chris Hanson would be the Mad Hatter...

[–]sociomaladaptivist 4 points5 points ago

Too old.

[–]irawwwr 2 points3 points ago

Just enough.

[–]AholeKevin 1 point2 points ago

Pandora Hearts anyone?

[–]midnom 4 points5 points ago

Ariel is only 16, that is not much older IMHO.

[–]paranode 8 points9 points ago

Yeah only 9 years and more than twice the age. But yeah...

[–]Weynard_Muldrake 6 points7 points ago

So is Aurora. But Disney doesnt let the characters get all sexualized till they are 16.

[–]enaidyl 3 points4 points ago

I thought that Snow White was 14, though I can't actually find anything confirming this. She was 7 in the Grimms tale though.

[–]FatZombieMama 4 points5 points ago

To be fair, the Disney Snow White doesn't fall in romantic love with anyone.. she just sees her prince one day and BOOM, destiny complete.

[–]enaidyl 1 point2 points ago

I haven't seen that movie since I was really little, so I don't actually remember much. I was just saying what I thought I had heard about her at some point.

[–]FatZombieMama 0 points1 point ago

Fair enough. :)

[–]Curtalius 0 points1 point ago

Also, shes way more interesting of a character than any of the others.

[–]Rekabek 0 points1 point ago

All other disney princesses "i'm in love" mulan "F*#% love I'm gonna save china" Alice (and myself) "I love my kitty"

[–]read_know_do 0 points1 point ago

Seven and a half, to be exact.

[–]JakJakAttacks 0 points1 point ago

7 to be exact. In the book (which the film is based off of) it's her 7th birthday.

She's 7 and a half in the sequel.

[–]read_know_do 0 points1 point ago

You're right. I was thinking about Through the Looking Glass.

[–]hoosty 0 points1 point ago

Alice? Alice? Who the fuck is Alice?

[–]BenCelotil 4 points5 points ago

Almost too obscure for this lot.

[–]Torger083 0 points1 point ago

I have an argument with my dad about it every time I visit.

[–]DIP_MY_BALLS_IN_IT 23 points24 points ago

Lesson learned: doing lots of opium alienates you from people.

[–]narcolepticGOAT 1 point2 points ago

I heard Alice in Wonderland was about the K hole... not sure if its true though.

[–]PointyStick 6 points7 points ago

Given that the book predates the invention of ketamine by 97 years and the Disney animated film predates the invention of ketamine by 11 years, I'm going to have to recommend that you work on your critical thinking skills.

[–]narcolepticGOAT 0 points1 point ago

I never said it was true that's just what I had heard! I was pretty sure they weren't right though. Thanks for clearing that up.

[–]chainsaw_juggler 0 points1 point ago

Louie? Is that you!

[–]compto35 10 points11 points ago

I just read this whole thread without seeing a single reference to Alice liking pussy. I'm proud of you guys.

[–]daidandyy 17 points18 points ago

Now I think everyone will understand why Alice is my favorite Disney character.

[–]denim_vest 9 points10 points ago

What about Mulan? She was around just to be a bad-ass and fuck shit up.

[–]darwin2500 1 point2 points ago

Didn't she marry some jackass she'd talked to like 3 times at the end of the movie? I always found that to be the most insulting one because it was so tacked-on and unnecessary.

[–]mjskhblflsch 2 points3 points ago

No, her commanding general just showed up at her house to have dinner. They don't become really romantic until the sequel some time later. They're engaged in the beginning and get married later in.

[–]Yamz 7 points8 points ago

That is why Alice is the highest tier of princesses in the Disney universe. she has drank from the brim of madness and has nothing to lose or to keep her back from saving people

[–]opey99123 5 points6 points ago

Isn't Alice like 12 or 14? something like that?

[–]brittanyjordan51 10 points11 points ago

Alice was 7, according to the books

[–]GophaKyorselv 22 points23 points ago

That's like 1 in dog years.

[–]woeisem 5 points6 points ago

WHERE THE FUCK IS ARIEL???

[–]kyle2143 5 points6 points ago

[–]moose_man 5 points6 points ago

[–]claudesoph 9 points10 points ago

What is the one right above Alice??

[–]Veganasuarus 18 points19 points ago

I think it's Tangled (Repunzel).

[–]vxx 17 points18 points ago

I feel like I am the only one who hates that Ehrmagerd "meme" so much that I cringe every time I have to read it.

[–]NULLACCOUNT 3 points4 points ago

It's one of the few memes/advice animals I like. Then again I also like dolan and tim and eric.

[–]Stingerfreak 2 points3 points ago

You're not.

[–]Tim_Kaiser 1 point2 points ago

You're not alone.

[–]feureau 5 points6 points ago

When they announced they're making Rapunzel and had shots of the title "Rapunzel" released, I was so excited. Then several months later, I was at the theater to see some movies with some friends and while we're picking which movie to see I saw the title (in the display thingy they have) "Disney's Tangled" and I was like, huh... never heard that one before. Probably one of those cheap shitty disney movie and the other screens wasn't very pallatable, so we were like, yeah, let's see a shitty disney film, I like disney, so we went in.

I nearly flipped several minutes in, when I realized this was the Rapunzel film. And I was WTF? Why did they call this Tangled?! And I flipped when the movie was fucking awesome.

TL;DR - THEY FUCKING RETITLED THIS TO SOME SHITTY TITLE!!!

[–]Ifunctiononkitkats 14 points15 points ago

They did it because Flynn Rider also has a substantial role in the film, it's not all just Rapunzel. They also did it so as not to alienate boys.

[–]swuboo 1 point2 points ago

They also did it so as not to alienate boys.

I imagine people who hadn't read the story were also a concern. After all, the when the American public looks for movies to take their children to, films with unfamiliar German-sounding titles aren't generally high on the list.

[–]pyrocord 5 points6 points ago

Wouldn't a lot of people know the tale of Rapunzel though? I'm not saying everyone does, but you would think a sizable amount of the population knows a little bit about fairy tales.

[–]swuboo 0 points1 point ago

Sizeable, yes, but when you're making a movie (especially a kids' movie) you want to reach as many people as possible.

There are plenty of folks out there whose only real experience with Fairy Tales outside of Mother Goose is, well, Disney movies.

[–]sailingonward 8 points9 points ago

Tangled. Girl cuts her hair and it turns brown, which is why she looks different.

[–]FatZombieMama 1 point2 points ago

Why did it turn brown?

[–]sailingonward 3 points4 points ago

Cutting her hair broke the magic spell that was cast on her, or something.

[–]imMute 8 points9 points ago

Admit it, you only said "or something like that" to make it seem like you haven't seen the movie a dozen times. I'm 22 and I've proudly watched it while my much younger cousins did other things.

[–]my_name_isnt_clever 1 point2 points ago

I haven't seen it yet. If it's on Netflix I'll watch it tomorrow.

[–]FatZombieMama 1 point2 points ago

Oh. Thanks. :)

[–]victordavion 1 point2 points ago

Cutting her hair also made her look hot.

First cartoon I ever almost fell for.

[–]drosengix 3 points4 points ago

Fuck you guys. Alice is 7 and a half years old, exactly.

[–]victordavion 3 points4 points ago

Because when you're 7 and a half, that half actually matters a shit ton. Ask any 7 and a half year old.

[–]drosengix 2 points3 points ago

They'll tell you they don't like boys, they like Netflix and birds.

[–]RockBandDood 5 points6 points ago

Age aside.. Is it not interesting that Alice's mind is the thing explored in this movie, and arguably, the depth of her thought? While the other princesses are what we could consider to be one dimensional?

Theres societal expectations built upon them, while Alice, we are exploring the depth and incongruities of the human mind, and in the same film, we avoid the arguably simplistic and classical love story?

Is it that the story of Alice is not, on it's face, sexist, while the fiction of these other females is, indeed, sexist?

Alice didn't need a male as her reward, herself and her own mind were enough, as I think, hopefully, in a good world, many women wouldn't need. We are just crawling out of a world where women needed men. An entire half of our species was subjugated to male power, thought, design, and media. Alice should be celebrated as a story that breaks these twisted and perverted traditions.

[–]gattofila 2 points3 points ago

I have no idea what you just wrote but it sounds very analytical. Upvote for you dear!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Basically, Disney Princess movies are sexist because they rely on the woman's only desire/goal to be a man. Alice doesn't have that, she wants a lot of things, like a normal human, making her a really great and dimensional characters.

[–]gattofila 0 points1 point ago

Ah, thank you. :D

[–]Epershand 4 points5 points ago

Dude, is it just me, but did Tangled kind of push the envelope in terms of Disney's vanilla romance in their movies?

[–]Ifunctiononkitkats 7 points8 points ago

how so?

[–]Epershand 0 points1 point ago

It just seemed like they were much more obvious with sexual innuendo and suggestion. But this may just be because kids are more 'mature' at a younger age.

[–]Ifunctiononkitkats 3 points4 points ago

I understand. It seemed like the characters were a lot more sarcastic and suggestive. I like tangled, as the protagonists seemed a but more mufti-faceted and there was obvious character development.

[–]imMute 7 points8 points ago

It was definitely different from previous disney movies, but I never picked up on alot of innuendo..... maybe I'm just dense.

[–]VivatRegina 5 points6 points ago

Alice isn't a Princess and was a little girl, of course she didn't end up in love.

Alice must be a redditor

Good ol' Alice- the last Disney movie to have an original plot (not in that no one had thought of it before, it was a book. I mean it's not some brainwashing tool for little girls).

[–]Schnydz 0 points1 point ago

Alice is also much younger. In the books she's like 7 and I get the feeling she's 14 or so in the movie.

How are the first five at all comparable with Alice? Alice isn't a Disney Princess, unlike the rest, and she is around half their age.

You're Alice? There was something I needed to ask you...

[–]jorellh 0 points1 point ago

Can you stand on your head?

[–]ibejammin 0 points1 point ago

If she's still into cats, she's too young for you bro.

And yet Alice was far and away the best character of any of those girls. Mostly because she didn't try to define herself through a man. She had a character outside of "Someday my prince will come."

I named my cat after Alice's cat, dinah :)

[–]BaconKlan 0 points1 point ago

Snow White's prince charming looks like Rosie O'Donnell.

I saw this on facebook like a week before I saw it on Reddit :(

[–]Cubeface 0 points1 point ago

dafuq is Pocahontas.

[–]tenkei 0 points1 point ago

Disney love is pretty fucked up and unhealthy. You're better off with the cats.

alice's got lucy, molly and mary jane

[–]henrysherman 0 points1 point ago

But if I could only watch one of those movies for the rest of my life it would be Alice in Wonderland!

[–]Olivier_Wilde 0 points1 point ago

You mistyped crazy cat lady.

[–]SuperSchmyd 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure I've seen this 4 times in the last week, all in the same sub.

[–]Mamameah 0 points1 point ago

im Alice too !!!

[–]domo-loves-yoshi 0 points1 point ago

She was 7 in the first book and 71/2 in through the looking glass, but if we are talking about the girl these books were based on then lightslash53 is correct she was 10 I believe when he wrote Alice in wonderland!

[–]Neffer 0 points1 point ago

The guy I like posted this to my facebook page. Needless to say I wasn't thrilled.

You know what? Good on you for choosing cats. The myth that everything will be fine and you'll get your Happily Ever After if only that man will fall in love with you is bunk, dude. The Princess ideal is limiting and insulting; it defines fulfillment for a female as a landed male provider. The life of a Princess is bland and boring, right? Play dress up, escape the confines of your (step/evil) mother's house for the warm security of your husband's house. Alice went to Wonderland, goddamnit, and saw and did some awesome shit. No wonder she chose a cat instead. You don't see Alice in those horrifying "Disney Princess" gimmicks they sell to young girls to inculcate them into pliable domesticity. Alice is off eating mushrooms and talking to disappearing felines of questionable integrity.

[–]Narroo 0 points1 point ago

That's actually a pretty odd looking cat.

[–]Mypenisblack 0 points1 point ago

Spoilers for Tangled?

[–]n1cejob 0 points1 point ago

Dude, is it just me, but did Tangled kind of push the envelope in terms of Disney's vanilla romance in their movies?

[–]ScratchBomb 0 points1 point ago

That may also explain why alice is the best
