I still don't understand the big deal about a football coach moving a tight-end to a wide receiver. too soon?

[–]killadelphia4 20 points21 points ago

That joke is older than the victims.

[–]Korin6 8 points9 points ago

Too bad everyone seems really butthurt about it.

[–]annoyinglyclever 1 point2 points ago

This whole thing is just a pain in the ass.

[–]SeveredBanana 1 point2 points ago

We like to have fun here.

[–]Vicious_Seraph 1 point2 points ago

"Don't fight it" laughed my ass off, I love Robot Chicken but don't catch every episode so somehow I missed this.

[–]CoyoteStark 1 point2 points ago

It's funny because he's going to die in prison.

[–]Pappy1193 1 point2 points ago

This is quite a touchy subject.

[–]apullin 5 points6 points ago

There is nothing in the world that is funnier than when the scandal came out, there was a big riot over his firing. We had finally arrive at it: people thought that football was more important than the actual laws, even ones protecting children.

[–]nmp12 2 points3 points ago

The gathering downtown was over the fact that he was fired before anyone really knew what the hell was going on. It was mostly people who, six days earlier, went to one of the cleanest universities in the country, and needed to find SOME reason to gather and be with each other. That's basic sociology. Unfortunately, as with any university, there are idiots. Here's what happened:

About 60 people got pissed off at news anchors for (and I watched this happen) walking into a group of students, throwing their arms up, and shouting, "C'MON! Do something exciting! You're angry!" They then eagerly filmed as a couple PSU students and a couple high school students pushed a van on its side.

The funny thing is all the people who are bemoaning Penn State students, faculty, and staff for not doing anything, when in reality they do nothing to change the patterns they conform to which promotes silence and obscurity pertaining to underage sexual assault. Hilarious.

[–]adamshell 0 points1 point ago

Just a point of clarification-- Jerry Sandusky retired from Penn State in 1999. He was not fired in November of 2011. That was Joe Paterno, the man about whom the Attorney General of Pennsylvania said he did exactly what he was supposed to not even a week after he was fired.

I'm not saying the riot was good (it wasn't) or that pederasty is good (it's not), but there are highly charged emotions about this and almost no one's looking for the truth or to help the victims-- just someone to blame.

[–]dick_rot -1 points0 points ago

What people might you be referring to here?

[–]Aksama 1 point2 points ago

Penn State students. Some of them.

[–]dick_rot 3 points4 points ago

At least you recognize that it isn't all students. I'm an alum and while I recognize that Joe Paterno was been able to do more and should have done more, the man made an immensely positive impact on thousands of students' lives.

Also, at no point did any student that I've ever known think that football was more important than something of this magnitude. I wish people would stop saying that shit.

[–]Aksama -1 points0 points ago

But there were a lot of them. There were tons of people out in the street supporting this guy. I don't give a shit how positive an impact he had on thousands of students lives, he's still an awful person.

[–]Starchild94 2 points3 points ago

I'm sick of penn state getting a bad rep for one persons actions. I'm a student who's more than proud to attend this school, and just because one man fucked up (or a few), doesn't mean the school is bad.

[–]lentzy 4 points5 points ago

As someone who grew up in State College went to, graduated from (this year being my senior year), and has been around Penn State my entire life you all have absolutely no idea the emotions the student body and alumni were going through.

To those saying we're a bunch of bumbling idiots (Who apparently all attend one of the best universities in the country?) :

Have any of you even seen pictures of the candle-light vigil for the victims that over 10,000 of us attended? This was started and executed by two current PSU students.

Did you watch the Wisconsin game where the entire crowd of over 100,000 people wore blue in support of child-abuse awareness?

Where were you when PSU alumni raised over half a million dollars for RAINN?

And now we get called a 'cult' or a group of lunatics over a football coach? If you truly believe that you are not paying attention to anything we have been doing. Why? Because you read deadspin and think you know what's been going on.

The actions of those responsible will end in their punishment, in this life or the next, but to say that "Penn State" (which is not two football coachs, and three executives) supports child abuse is the grossest overstatement you can make about the whole situation.

[–]Xiomaraff 0 points1 point ago

lol @ one of the best universities in the country.

[–]FuckYoureShit 1 point2 points ago

I like how you gush over Penn State students

but say nothing about the actual victims in this situation.

[–]lentzy 0 points1 point ago

Candlelight vigil for the VICTIMS, blue out for the VICTIMS of child abuse, half a million dollars for RAINN which is one of the largest NPO's in the world dealing with the VICTIMS of child abuse. You're right. I should've said victims more so maybe you would understand it.

[–]mirrislegend[S] 0 points1 point ago

Nobody is harshing on you guys. It's not your fault that you idolized a man, when you didn't know his full story. (not sarcasm)

If you knew both sides of him from the beginning, would you ever have gotten so attached, or even liked him at all? Obviously not. Now that you know it all, you should feel negative about him.

And it's evident that you do. His fall from grace is hard to take for someone in your position. But you did and are dealing with it (the aforementioned emotions).

When people stand up for him, it's not because they thing he is great anymore. It's because they cannot reconcile his change from hero to demon. He IS a demon, but such a momentous fall from such a high pedestal, is too much for many worshippers to take. Thus, they minimize the fall, to make the change less extreme, and thus more bearable. They minimize his fall by marginalizing his crimes. It is these people, who are so devoted that they cannot accept reality, that we mock and scathe.

[–]lentzy 0 points1 point ago

You really can't call him a demon from what we've seen. The emails we've seen can be taken a thousand different ways. The "we talked with Joe" part could mean the meeting that we already know took place between Paterno, McQueary, and Schultz, or it could as you say hint at a larger conspiracy. The fact is we don't know and it's frustrating to see his image burned across the country when we simply do not have a full picture of what happened.

[–]nmp12 0 points1 point ago

You seem to be speaking of Sandusky, not paterno? Am I right in that, because no one in this town supports Sandusky in any way, shape, or form...

[–]Guanren 0 points1 point ago

Wow, really? I had no idea. 10,000 people went to a vigil? 100,000 people wore blue at a football game? Before I wanted to know how a program held up as wholesome and all-American could conceal a child rapist, and what kind of attitude would make people continue to defend those individuals even after the full story came out. But alumni raised half a million dollars for a charity, so forget it.

This must have been really be hard for you, to find out that one of the longtime coaches liked to have naked fun times with little boys, and other coaches and administration found out, had a number of meetings and then told themselves everything was fine.

[–]farzyness 2 points3 points ago

Fellow Penn State grad here ('09)

I obviously wasn't on campus when it all went down last year, but it was one of the most emotional moments of my life. Nuts.

[–]ilikecommunitylots 0 points1 point ago

Greatest overstatement made in this whole thing was you saying psu is one of the best universities in the country

[–]gl77 3 points4 points ago

Remember when this story broke and everyone was pissed that the media dare say anything bad against the almighty and holy Penn State football administration? Especially Joe Paterno? Yea, that was pretty funny.

[–]Switchsquatch 2 points3 points ago

Remember when the story broke and people actually cared about the children instead of trying to smear?

[–]gl77 3 points4 points ago

Nope, not right when the story broke. Don't you remember all of the Penn State students busting their asses to defend the honor of good old Joe Pa and Jerry? It was all over the TV. As if they could do no wrong.

Riots in support of Paterno.

[–]GodShitsBlood 9 points10 points ago

Remember that time on Reddit we all made sweeping generalizations?

Come on, man. Use your head. Yes, a lot of evil happened at PSU and a lot of people made bad decisions (students reaction to Paterno's firing).

But don't wrap in the students, alumni, and staff who rallied for firing of those involved in the scandal and coverup, those who raised millions of dollars to increase awareness for such awful situations, and those that just straight up had nothing to do with this and want nothing to do with this other than those that committed the crimes to pay for them.

[–]Olukon 1 point2 points ago

Remember that time that humans were rational? Me neither.

[–]gl77 0 points1 point ago

people defended Paterno for not speaking up about it because it might tarnish their precious, precious football program. Football in America has reached levels of unhealthy obsession.

[–]jmcf91 2 points3 points ago

This is actually a phenomenon brought on by too much commitment to an organization. Paterno felt he was doing the right thing by not following up on these accusations/behaviors. Though I personally feel that Paterno is just as guilty as Sandusky for my own reasons, this type of behavior isn't uncommon. There are recorded cases in New Jersey where troopers were being accused of pulling over minorities more often than white people. The troopers then started 'ghosting' meaning they continued to pull over minorities but instead put license plates of cars owned by caucasians to make it appear that they were not pulling people over because of their race. It really has nothing to do with American obsession of football.

[–]GodShitsBlood 0 points1 point ago

That's not it.

[–]DawsonsBeak -2 points-1 points ago

this is true.. Evidence is supposed to be released this week that is "tough" on Paterno though.

[–]Windows_97 4 points5 points ago

20 people were charged during the "riot" and only 2000 students were downtown out of a total student population of roughly 40,000. Please tell me how the acts of a few represent the majority: most of you redditors are into this concept.

[–]afrobat 0 points1 point ago

This guy explained what actually happened quite well.

In reality most of the people were more pissed at the fact that the news wasn't covering the actual person being charged, Jerry Sandusky, and instead was trying to find a scapegoat at the time. Note, this does not have anything to do with Joe was innocent or guilty or anything. At that time there wasn't really any information as to what his involvement in this was, what he did do, and what he did not do.

[–]Switchsquatch -5 points-4 points ago

Oh right sorry, you weren't there when the story actually broke. Only after the mass media picked it up did they make sure it was about Paterno.

[–]gl77 1 point2 points ago

it was about him, partly. Because he knew about all of the shit that happened and absolutely refused to contact the police. Instead claiming to have made a half assed attempt at reporting it to campus police and when they didn't act, he did nothing more. He's every bit as guilty as Sandusky in my book.

[–]Switchsquatch 0 points1 point ago

I guess it's a good thing they don't listen to people who only watch CNN and call themselves 'knowledgeable' then.

[–]RedditsRudestMan -5 points-4 points ago

Paterno was the only innocent one.

[–]woofers02 -1 points0 points ago

Almost as funny as penn st. students rioting when they fired Paterno for covering up child rape.

[–]NothingWrongHere -4 points-3 points ago

I dont remember that at all

[–]giantasparagus 0 points1 point ago

MAD magazine. Never fails to deliver.

[–]RedditsRudestMan -1 points0 points ago

Joe Pa was the only person who did was he was supposed to. Here's an analogy.

A guy (mcqueary) observes an old woman getting viciously beat and robbed by another guy (sandooskee). Our observer could have stopped what he saw going on but he just turns heel and runs away. The next day our observer goes to an old man (Joe Pa) and says something to the effect of "I may have seen another guy strike a woman in an alley yesterday". The old man takes our observer to the police (spanier, curley, and shultz). The police tell ol' joe pa everything in fine and to go away. Meanwhile the cops join the asshole(sandoooskee) in beating women.

FUCK ALL OF YOU. I AM DRUNK

WE ARE PENN STATE

DOWNVOTE ME FAGGOTS I ACTUALLY WILL BE PISSSED
