All the dots are the same speed throughout the image but whenever you put your fist in the middle it shortens the visible distance that the dots travel but maintain the same speed but it seems like the dots are moving faster because the time they are visible is shorter. Scienced

The irony of this post is that it is actually incorrect, so your "science" must have been bullshitted. If you make a little triangle window with your hands, you can slow down the gif by looking at nothing but the center. Or, the more important part, you can block out everything except a small sliver from the center to an edge. Using this technique, its easy to see that there is a gradual increase in speed as you move from the center. Scienced

It's still an optical illusion nonetheless. It's not like your computer is sensitive to the proximity of your hand. By shortening the time you see the dot moving across the screen it appears to be moving faster. It's as simple as that.

optical illusion. Your fist is covering up the slower particles, so you only see the faster ones on the edge.
