Every time that this is linked, I am obligated to open in a new tab and let it play in the background.

Mostly because tunnel snakes rule.

Mandelbaum! Mandelbaum!

[–]Bertrand_Hussle 3 points4 points ago

You think you're better than him?!

[–]razorcollector 107 points108 points ago

He is deadlifting what looks to be about 75 lbs. He looks to be maybe 10 years old, and probably weighs about that much. That is actually pretty impressive to be able to match your body weight in any lift. It takes a lot of time to build up to that. His posture could be improved, but he's 10...I'm sure he'll get better.

TLDR: this is actually impressive and is not mediocre at all.

[–]myweedishairy 32 points33 points ago

It is impressive, and he's probably just doing an activity he enjoys with his dad, and he's good enough to do it in a competitive setting. I think it's cute, and I hardly think it's fair to call him a douchebag.

[–]Pinyaka 14 points15 points ago

No one said douchebag.

[–]Bford -5 points-4 points ago

Not in this thread, but I don't doubt someone said it here...

Edit: Oh FFS, reddiquette people! Someone explain the downvotes or I will just continue to make these comments and upset you.

Also, this wasn't directed at anyone, just to be clear.

[–]Schroedingers_gif 52 points53 points ago

That is actually pretty impressive to be able to match your body weight in any lift.

When you're 10, yeah.

[–]trazeee 15 points16 points ago

Don't know why you're being downvoted, this is true.

[–]Zenn1nja 2 points3 points ago

I'm pretty sure you can't lift 300 pounds.

[–]mangatroll 6 points7 points ago

deadlifting your weight is actually really easy. just saying...

[–]qwerty0805 3 points4 points ago

DYEL?

[–]godofallcows 8 points9 points ago

A deadlift? It really isn't that hard. To pick up, but it will fuck your back up with bad form.

[–]Dentarthurdent42 23 points24 points ago

Interesting placement of punctuation...

[–]igetript 7 points8 points ago

I'm guessing he was using a phone and double spaced on accident.

[–]godofallcows 0 points1 point ago

igetript got it right, using a phone lol.

Also fucking cool username. /r/DontPanic

[–]Schroedingers_gif 2 points3 points ago

My deadlift max is only 275, but I'm also 6'6" 180.

[–]Khaze 8 points9 points ago

Any power exercise is a lot harder when you're that tall. If you ever happen to need an excuse.

[–]Anticitizen-Zero 2 points3 points ago

Mine is 365, 5'6" and 155. Form is everything.

[–]Schroedingers_gif 4 points5 points ago

Being a manlet can't hurt.

[–]CQReborn 1 point2 points ago

Isn't it easier when you are shorter? Not to insult your PR, thats' what I'd heard from my lifting days.

[–]Anticitizen-Zero -1 points0 points ago

No, that's why there's modified form for tall people.

[–]IAmYoda 1 point2 points ago

Also being tall (6'5'', 250lb- ~25%bf), mine is 310. It's the one lift i excel in. Everything else im terrible (especially benching).

[–]TheGoomba 19 points20 points ago

He's 10 so this doesn't really apply to him specifically but, deadlifting your body weight is a simple task and is unimpressive by any means. Lift for a month or 2 and you should be able to deadlift your own weight. OHP would be very impressive, bench takes a bit of work, squat and deadlift should be able to pass bodyweight very quickly.

TLDR; Starting Strength.

[–]PatAunces 2 points3 points ago

Isn't his form off? Or is mine? I don't think you're supposed to be using your back that much, right? He's barely bending his legs.

[–]VulgarityEnsues 1 point2 points ago

His is way off, knees bent should be bent and your shoulder blades should be tight.

[–]Kaniget 3 points4 points ago

He also didn't lock out.

I can't believe I got sucked in to critiquing a 10 yr old's lifts.

[–]DreadPiratesRobert 4 points5 points ago

How are you thinking that's 75? I'm no expert but it looks like a 35lb bar and maybe 5-10 pound weights

[–]TheTritium 5 points6 points ago

15 lbs of weights on each side looks like.

[–]DreadPiratesRobert 2 points3 points ago

Oh yeah, I didn't see the second plate on it

Damn impressive

[–]ramiregr 15 points16 points ago

Olympic Bars are 45lbs + 15lbs x 2 = 75 lbs

[–]TheCouchWhisperer 3 points4 points ago

those look like 10lbs plates

[–]thekonny 6 points7 points ago

looks like a ten and a five to me

[–]MyMomSlapsMe 2 points3 points ago

That bar looks thinner than any 45 pound bar I've ever used, and those plates are tens at the most. I'm not saying that isn't impressive but I'm guessing at the most that's 55 pounds.

[–]DreadPiratesRobert 0 points1 point ago

I know Olympic bars are 45 but they also have lighter bars

[–]thunderblumpkin 17 points18 points ago

The place looks like a competing environment, i'm sure the bar is 45.

[–]trazeee 9 points10 points ago

That's a 45 lb bar, sonny boy.

[–]razorcollector 2 points3 points ago

Exactly. I'm saying 45 lb. bar. because of it being competitive.

[–]DreadPiratesRobert 0 points1 point ago

Fair enough, I never did competitive weight lifting

[–]cyberslick188 0 points1 point ago

It may be impressive for his age, I don't really know, but in terms of an adult male, it's not impressive.

Being able to match your weight isn't an accomplishment in many lifts. If your max deadlift, leg press, or squat was your own weight you wouldn't be considered strong.

If your bench was your own weight you'd be on to a start, or if your clean and press was you'd be impressive, but most of the full body lifts aren't impressive at your own weight.

Just thought I'd throw it out there.

[–]TheGoomba 2 points3 points ago

You shouldn't be getting downvoted. Squat and deadlift at bodyweight should take maybe 2 months of lifting to achieve. Bodyweight bench is starting to get towards "strong", and OHP at bodyweight is probably pretty damned good. Must be getting downvoted by the redditors who don't even know how to execute a deadlift.

[–]JasonGD1982 0 points1 point ago

No shit. You must have been a genius when you were ten years old.

[–]FlyingPasta 0 points1 point ago

He's way younger than 10, and weighs way less than 75lb. I had a 10 year old brother 2 years ago, and the kid in the gif looks much younger. And lighter.

[–]geebs61 1 point2 points ago

There is no way that kid is 10.

[–]FlyingPasta 1 point2 points ago

I know, right?! He looks way younger.

[–]cyberslick188 -2 points-1 points ago

Looks about 10 to me, and he's a solid kid, so he's at least 75lbs.

Anyway, for a kid, yes this is strong, that's not the point I was making. I'm not sure why you are even responding to me with this.

[–]FlyingPasta -1 points0 points ago

You said matching your weight is unimpressive, and I pointed out that, in my opinion, he weighs way less than 75lb.

[–]cyberslick188 0 points1 point ago

Lol, my very first sentence says its probably impressive for his age, I'm talking about adults.

Did you even read it?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]razorcollector -2 points-1 points ago

Did saying that make you feel included in the discussion?

[–]ramsrgood -1 points0 points ago

lifting to your weight to your waist isn't all that impressive. not to be mean to the kid, but that's not very hard.

[–]MindlessDreamer -1 points0 points ago

Hey, doesn't doing weights like this at a young age affect your growth or something? I'm sure he does a lot of other training too.

[–]Nick51705 15 points16 points ago

I was always told that doing weights at a young age can stunt your growth. Isn't this bad for the kid?

[–]loluwrong 27 points28 points ago

not true at all

[–]Nick51705 22 points23 points ago

Another lie I'll have to unlearn :(

[–]UnicornPuppy 25 points26 points ago

It doesn't "stunt growth" but that doesn't mean it's necessarily good. Before bones are developed enough it can be rather bad for joints, particularly when you don't show good form (which the gif kid doesn't, nor would any kid, they don't care about form).

[–]Mr_Titicaca 11 points12 points ago

I feel like it definitely stunted my growth. I was growing a lot in my teens, but I kept putting hard hours of workouts everyday. I was going to extreme lengths to gain muscle and definitely overdid it. Afterwards, I stopped growing.

[–]ArseAssassin 4 points5 points ago

I like how this is the downvoted comment, compared to the one that cites no proof at all.

[–]wanderingtroglodyte 12 points13 points ago

To be fair, this isn't proof either. This is anecdotal evidence. Not to mention that growth spurts, um... stop.

[–]SwiftyLeZar 0 points1 point ago

Anecdotal may not be particularly reliable, but an assertion backed by anecdotal evidence is better than one backed by nothing (e.g., the other post).

[–]Mr_Titicaca 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I don't get the downvotes. Not saying I'm right, but just my uneducated guess in my own experience. I was taller than my parents when I was 13, 14, 15. Then as the workouts got more intense, I actually began decreasing in size and now I'm shorter than my parents. Again, it may be due to something else, but I always assumed it was my lack of proper workouts and horrible stances when lifting.

[–]FlyingPasta 3 points4 points ago

How is it possible to decrease in height? Maybe your posture or something? I don't think your bones can shrink from weightlifting.

[–]Mr_Titicaca 0 points1 point ago

I have no fucking clue FlyingPasta. I'm sure my posture contributed to it, but I definitely decreased in height.

[–]FlyingPasta 0 points1 point ago

By how much?

[–]Mr_Titicaca 1 point2 points ago

I was about 5'9, 5'10. Now I'm 5'7, 5'8 if I have awesome shoes. Again, it may just be that my posture fucked up my back, but who knows.

[–]FlyingPasta 1 point2 points ago

Eh, an inch isn't too bad, could be chalked up to a margin of error. Even if you did shrink, it wasn't drastic.

[–]Mr_Titicaca -2 points-1 points ago

No, it wasn't drastic. But I was 5'9, 5'10 and had been continually growing before when I was around 14, 15. I'm now 26 and I'm 5'7. Maybe I just stopped growing?

[–]646e72 -1 points0 points ago

Yes, this is why everyone who grew up on a farm is 4 feet tall.

Lifting heavy apparently raises your testosterone, so I'm willing to bet that lifting during adolescence will probably help with your height a small bit.

[–]geebs61 0 points1 point ago

HAHAHA!

[–]Imnolongerlurking 45 points46 points ago

Man, the neckbeardedness of reddit is really shining through in these comments today...

[–]bluemangrope 4 points5 points ago

I think this is probably the funniest GIF I have ever seen.

[–]LadySakuya 15 points16 points ago

The kid's reaction after putting it down... So cute.

[–]Tspyder90 1 point2 points ago

The Mandelbaum Great Grandson

[–]fubusmaximus 2 points3 points ago

That kid is going to fuck up his back.

[–]Sano1 7 points8 points ago

Terrible posture, needs to bend the knees and lift with his legs or he is going to kill his back.

[–]HimmelFahrt 2 points3 points ago

there does exist a straight-leg deadlift:

http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/Hamstrings/BBStraightLegDeadlift.html

(good site, by the way)

[–]ytsejam214 0 points1 point ago

Not to mention how rounded his back was to start out... that kid's gonna have back problems if he doesn't straighten up his form.

[–]DrollestMoloch 0 points1 point ago

Even though the deadlift is a compound lift, the actual leg involvement isn't that significant compared to back involvement.

Put it this way- you think a strongman is going to let his kid learn to lift the heaviest lift with incorrect form?

[–]Sano1 2 points3 points ago

While it is true the legs are as important in a deadlift, you still need to use them, this kid didn't even attempt to use them and while I would think a stongman wouldn't let his kid use an incorrect form, he did.

[–]DreadPiratesRobert -3 points-2 points ago

Exactly what I was thinking, pretty impressive though with how small he is

[–]BamaCrimsonTide 0 points1 point ago

Why the hell do all of these neckbeards hate weightlifting so much? Some of the nicest people I've ever met were in the gym. And on a side note, that kid needs to arch his back!

[–]geebs61 0 points1 point ago

Where are all these neckbeards complaining at? I think you saw one or two comments and started making wild generalizations.

[–]loyalchivette 0 points1 point ago

Adorable.

[–]stevonyx 0 points1 point ago

Sauce?

[–]Kiiren 0 points1 point ago

...should he be lifting that with his back?

[–]uk2knerf 0 points1 point ago

No, but he's like 7, my form was shitty till I got a real coach at like 13.

[–]BreakRulesGetCoins 0 points1 point ago

Mediocre? That kid can deadlift more than I can.

[–]cbake4 0 points1 point ago

I freak out every single time that i see this gif because that kid looks exactly like me when i was that age and it makes me think someone took my DNA and cloned me for some nefarious purpose.

[–]sonastyinc 0 points1 point ago

Not hating on the kid but he didn't even lockout properly.

[–]McSteezeMuffin 0 points1 point ago

That kid is gonna be such a douche when he grows up.

[–]Markymark36 0 points1 point ago

Wow. Terrible form. And that's probably about 30 lbs max

[–]pokeyjones 0 points1 point ago

I can see that kid's future, and it has an awful lot of bar fights in it.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]dan2737 2 points3 points ago

Are you jealous or something? That kid is adorable.

[–]FairlyLargeLineman -2 points-1 points ago

I really hope people don't encourage weight lifting for children.

[–]poundpoundpound -1 points0 points ago

Yay child abuse!

[–]PotatoMusicBinge -2 points-1 points ago

Oh man, look at all those upvotes! At this rate you'll be strutting like a peacock till St. Swithin's Day

[–]MedievalKnieval -2 points-1 points ago

Flexes arms afterwards but lifted with his back... lol
