    There's still no logic. 'Life' is said to start when the sperm meets the egg, in the case of those who are against abortion. A sperm cannot ever become a child on it's own. So swallowing doesn't really stop life.

    I meant the logic in the author's head, assuming that they were arguing against the status of a fetus as a life by conflating the potential life of the fetus with the potential life of an unfertilized sperm. So the argument being advanced is that a fetus is closer in kind to a sperm than it is to a born human. That's kind of a ludicrous assertion, but it could be logical, if you accept the lines being drawn.

    This did not deserve that much thought.

      I'd say that a fetus is very different from an embryo. If we're going to be entirely legitimate, we'd have to say that eating an embryo is cannibalism.

      But that still doesn't properly frame the debate, because cannibalism is simply eating human flesh; the abortion debate is over whether or not the embryo is a 'person' with the attendant rights, not whether or not an embryo is human flesh (which it clearly is).

      I like to think pro-life and pro-choice activists prefer to just choose the most emotive, sensational way to present their issue. You get pro-life people saying "you're murdering babies" and the pro-choice side saying "you're trying to deny women rights", when really it's one (albeit not simple) issue that covers both, the whole "When does it get rights?" thing. The people claiming infanticide or oppression rarely care to actually debate.

      Problem is it's not really an objective or measurable thing. It's really subjective, the decision of when it gets rights; it needs to be reasoned through. There's also the matter of implications - if abortions were illegal, some people would be getting them anyway, with less safe methods.

      Did you even think about what I said? I said that if you are determined in what you want to achieve - for example, if you are pro choice or pro life - the underlying issue (in this case, when do we call a human being a human being, does a fetus get human rights or not) is often of secondary nature to you or you don't even think about it because you already know what you want to think. This is the case in most political issues, thinking about the philosophical aspects tends to question peoples' beliefs.

      Your two options at "resolving" the issue is A winning, or B winning. Most people who are trying to get their way see it as a two-sided thing, which it isn't. It is a single issue with a single question, one that must be carefully examined before finding a solution. But that does not work as long as two groups try to get their way without even looking at the issue. They want to win. They want abortion legal, or they want it illegal - they want to win. I didn't meant that they merely pursue the thrill of a victory, of course - just that they want to have it their way.

      If a complex philosophical conondrum must be resolves, all involved must acknowledge it. Those who are pro-life must agree that a woman has to have control of her own body and that forcing something on her like that is bad. Those who are pro-choice must acknowledge that, whether a fetus is a human being or not, killing it is also bad, especially as it grows older. That's a discussion that can not be resolved, so to speak, "in battle".

        Actually, a sperm cell left alone is not human, because it will not grow to become a human. However, a Zygote (egg cell fertilized by a sperm cell), left alone in the mother, will grow to become human, so it is human.
