It's actually probably not. There are some people with a skin disease that get temporary welts from light pressure.

[–]IceCreamThief 52 points53 points ago

It's also called dermatographism because you can write on your skin.

[–]ItchyPube 9 points10 points ago

How exactly do you write on it?

[–]IceCreamThief 10 points11 points ago

Usually a fingernail is enough pressure to make the skin raise.

[–]mattindustries 8 points9 points ago

Probably a pencil (eraser).

[–]quaste 3 points4 points ago

Anything pointy will do. It usually vanishes after a few minutes.

[–]monkeymynd 2 points3 points ago

I have this issue, but it comes and goes. When my skin is inflamed, it doesn't take much at all to write on my skin. You can use a fingernail, a fork tine, a stylus, pretty much anything. You don't even need to use much pressure...no need to break the skin at all. Just lightly scratch the surface and it will raise up within 10-15 minutes.

[–]BuggedMei 8 points9 points ago

My boyfriend has this. Our girlfriend and I use our DS styluses to write on him.

[–]nightwing2024 25 points26 points ago

Our?

Go on.

[–]BuggedMei 15 points16 points ago

Big happy threesome relationship. Boyfriend struts around like he's the king of the world.

[–]Iced_TeaFTW 0 points1 point ago

I know this feeling, feels good, doesn't it? I think we all feel a bit smug that we recognize something that is not socially the norm and yet works great for us. Upvotes away!

[–]ItchyPube 0 points1 point ago

He is... He is, indeed.

[–]HysteresisLoop 1 point2 points ago

Haha yes I did this! I used to dig my nails into my arm to make wird crescent patterns...

[–]sephiap 1 point2 points ago

So, TIL after the use of my phone's stylus that I have dermatographic urticaria. Woop. Life is full of surprises eh.

[–]hdcs 56 points57 points ago

I had idiopathic urticaria for a few years a while back. This just makes me writhe in sympathetic, itchy, hot pain.

[–]TurdsMaGee 38 points39 points ago

Woah woah woah. I FOUND SOMEBODY ELSE WHO'S HAD THIS! HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Was yours chronic?

[–]crackerjim 194 points195 points ago

you guys had the same rash? that's acute.

[–]ramotsky 24 points25 points ago

You are being a bit obtuse with that pun since it's not a rash.

[–]crackerjim 10 points11 points ago

I rubbed TurdsMaGee the wrong way with my rash statement, so i'll take that as a sine to change the topic of the puns.

p.s.: totally a rash.

[–]nixonrichard 8 points9 points ago

You did the right thing ending this pun thread because it hurt TurdsMaGee's feelings.

Good on you. HIVES FIVE! UH OH, PUN THREAD IS BACK GUYS!!!

[–]The_game_is_over 1 point2 points ago

let's be rashional please.

[–]TurdsMaGee 7 points8 points ago

Fuck you bro, I was hospitalized my entire childhood, almost died more than a few times, and would be basically paralyzed with the swelling for weeks at a time. And it would happen anytime I caught a virus, which happens.... All the time. Luckily puberty took care of it and I grew out of it, but that shit wasn't much fun

[–]fwerp 30 points31 points ago

Pat pat Sorry to hear it man. I think crackerjim may have been making a joke but people on the internet often forget that not everything is funny to everyone. Especially when it has to do with something like this.

[–]Ftumsh 66 points67 points ago

Don't pat too hard.

[–]Schwarzwind 5 points6 points ago

Your comment was so simple and well placed that it satisfied my craving for reddit, and at 5:12AM I can finally sleep. Thank you sandman.

[–]TurdsMaGee 1 point2 points ago

Ha, wow, an actually apology on the Internet. You know, your not so bad fwerp, one day I hope we share a beer

[–]deelawn 16 points17 points ago

people being nice to one another... i thought this was /r/trees until you said beer

[–]BeforeTime 1 point2 points ago

There's nothing I like more than getting fired up on beer.

[–]fwerp 5 points6 points ago

Anytime, my friend. Anytime!

[–]ellimayhem 0 points1 point ago

Did anyone else hear this in Mario's voice?

[–]70stang 6 points7 points ago

I had this as well! This is crazy. I've never met anybody else who did.

[–]TurdsMaGee 13 points14 points ago

I just met you, and this is crazy.. We all have had the same disease.. So who's got the epinephrine and Benadryl.

[–]Relvnt_to_Yr_Intrsts 2 points3 points ago

heyheyhey I just learned the other day that there's a class of medications called mast-cell stabilizers that might be more effective than benadryl and epi for your welts (as a preventative not a treatment). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cromoglicic_acid and/or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketotifen. I'm not a doctor or anything, but just putting two and two together and wikipedia says it's effective.

Anyway, I just met you and this is crazy, here's some pharmacology, call your doctor maybe

[–]pfffftt 4 points5 points ago

I don't know much about epinephrine and Benadryl but I masturbated a lot when I was a kid.

[–]barset 1 point2 points ago

I'm not certain but those would probably make terrible lubricants for your masturbatory routines. I'd suggest a nice lotion or hand cream.

[–]OuchthathurtMe 0 points1 point ago

I had the same thing after my second child was born. It was excruciating. Kept getting passed around from doctor to doctor - nobody wanted to be responsible for treating a mom with a newborn. Massive rounds of several types of antihistamines, and it finally went away.

My sympathies to anybody dealing with this, especially chronically. It's crazy-making.

[–]DrewViolet 2 points3 points ago

Ugh. I've had it for almost a year now. Horrible.

[–]rmcnamaraa 2 points3 points ago

Holy shit. I've never found anyone else who has this. And mines chronic

[–]TurdsMaGee 0 points1 point ago

Yeah this is weird, is there some function of reddit where we can all just go talk about it?

[–]Simnol 1 point2 points ago

It's quite common you know... speaking of which. :)

[–]Sinnic 1 point2 points ago

I have it too! I actually kinda like it.

[–]HysteresisLoop 1 point2 points ago

I had this too! I grew out of it a few years ago, but it sometimes comes back for a few months at a time. I remember classifying the rash into the colours- pink was ok, red was fucking itchy and white was like HOLY FUCK MY SKIN IS ON FIRE IN SO MANY PLACES. It used to get worse when I had a cold too. For me it was linked mainly to food allergies, though. I have some pretty grim pictures of it from when I was 8 or so.

[–]JuannyCarson 1 point2 points ago

I have chronic urticaria. Had it for 5 years now, it's a bitch sometimes but the medication takes care of it.

[–]Sawgon[S] 1 point2 points ago

Can I take credit for bringing everyone together that had this? Also one of you guys should do an AMA or just a Reddit post about your condition.

[–]AVTRHNTR 1 point2 points ago

Mine is Chronic. I can draw simley faces on my stomach, and write stuff on my arms. I'm wierd.

[–]Aloisia 1 point2 points ago

I have urticaria too, only on my legs though. Mine's heat related. Sucks major wang.

[–]RedditAvalanche 3 points4 points ago

cholinergic uticaria here feels bad man.

[–]trivo 1 point2 points ago

I've had cholinergic urticaria for about 7 years. I don't have it anymore, it just went away by itself. Anyway, what I found to greatly relieve the symptoms (itching, etc) is to break a sweat regularly, best by some aerobic exercise. You see, because urticaria is caused by an increased release of histamines, if you avoid the itching by avoiding getting hot (say, for days), histamines will pile up in your body, and then next time you do get hot, they will all be released at once, and you will have a huge swelling, itching, etc. I once almost fainted from the itching/pain when I went to the store after several days of staying indoors. But, if you push it every day, then every time you do it, you will have smaller itching, but you will also force histamines to be released, thus preventing them from accumulating in bigger amount, so if you have to do something in the sun or in some hot space, the symptoms will be much easier on you. This really helped me and once I started doing it, I was able to do stuff normally, and even though I did get the itching, it was completely mild and tolerable and didn't prevent me from doing stuff as before (like having sex, for example).

[–]Scramblesthecat 1 point2 points ago

Yeah man I've had that for a while now, whenever I rub my face even a little it looks all red and like I'm mad or something.

[–]Sawgon[S] 0 points1 point ago

Hey guys. Posted this and went to bed so that's why I haven't replied to people (not that this is an AMA or anything).

I didn't know about that disease! It's interesting to say the least. Is it harmful? How did you get it? How can it go away?

[–]thechrisreese 4 points5 points ago

My wife had this after my first daughter was born. We have not been able to find out what it was (no doctors because it's not that serious). Thanks Reddit, now I showed her what is wrong.

[–]kkidfall 2 points3 points ago

That's it! Thanks couldn't remember the name.

[–]Cinnamon_Altoids 1 point2 points ago

So this is what's called! I just thought my skin was just extra sensitive. I spent many study halls in high school 'drawing' on my skin and would come up with pretty intricate designs. They go away in like 15 minutes.

I once fooled a friend that I got attacked by an animal by dragging my nails across my chest. To his credit, it did look like I was half-mauled.

[–]MikeHawk7 0 points1 point ago

So that's what it's called! My dad and I have it and never knew what the condition was. Thanks!

[–]Biscuitaddict 0 points1 point ago

I have this, recently it's not as strong though. The welts last for around an hour.

[–]themikeoftruth 0 points1 point ago

HEY!!! It's that thing that I have!!!!!!!!

[–]redleader 1 point2 points ago

We are the 5%

[–]Duskblade95 16 points17 points ago

Like me! my skin welts from the slightest irritation. I went swimming at the lake one time and the water was kinda cold so when I got out my back looked like I have been beat with a whip. Of course I didn't even know and this one lady saw me and started freaking out and asking my parents if I was diseased.

[–]Shyviolet 1 point2 points ago

hahaha when I was in kindergarten the teachers took me aside one day and asked to see my stomach because my skin was so easily welts and it mottles in the cold. I still don't know if they thought I had chicken pox/measles or if they were planning to report my parents for beating me.

[–]ramotsky 2 points3 points ago

Correct. I have it. It's not as severe as that but a simple scratch with all five fingers looks like someone took a rake to me.

[–]Vicious_Violet 1 point2 points ago

I have it too. I can write my grocery list on my arm with my fingernail. Looks freaky to everybody else, but doesn't bother me.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

I've had a few "high-fives" on my back in the space of a few seconds. I welted up and the imprint was visible. Not quite to this extent. I know that this swelling could well be the result of one mother fucker slap. And whoever did that was a fuckwad.

[–]heimdal77 2 points3 points ago

Came to say this... But ya they can literally write on their skin with fingernail and it will swell up to make the raised words or drawing. The one real bad thing though is it can be very itchy, I know from first hand experience..

[–]Sapphires13 1 point2 points ago

I have delayed pressure urticaria. Basically this means that any prolonged pressure against my skin (light or otherwise) will cause hives to form within several minutes.

Things which have given me welts: elastic waistbands, bra straps, wearing shoes, resting my mousing wrist on the desk, leaning on my hand, sleeping one position too long.

It's almost completely controlled now with Claritin, thankfully. However, I still often wake up all itchy and irritated from it. Fortunaty the hives go away in a few minutes once the pressure is gone.

[–]cocoabeach 1 point2 points ago

I never knew what it was called. I had this but gradually outgrew it. Didn't completely go away until I was in my late forties.

[–]USAF503 1 point2 points ago

I've been 5 stared hard enough it broke the skin. It definitely won't do that normally, no matter how hard you're hit.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It's actually probably not what? Who are you talking to?

[–]peachesandballz 0 points1 point ago

I've had dermagraphism since I was born. My pediatrician said I'd grow out of it by the time I was ten... I'm nineteen now, and it's still going strong, haha. Whenever people would find out that I had it, slaps like this and scratches from other people were not uncommon.

[–]themikeoftruth 0 points1 point ago

I don't get it from pressure, it's from abrasion

[–]beanso 0 points1 point ago

Then again, it could hurt a lot. Doing this to others was popular for a while in highschool, and I did it to a friend outside on a cold day and he got a similar mark. My hand tingled for most of the day.

[–]JBooom 0 points1 point ago

It's more of an allergy to one's own skin. In any case, it's fun at parties.

http://i.imgur.com/pNNkB.jpg

[–]steevee16 0 points1 point ago

Never knew there was an actual disease for it, just thought I was a sensitive pussy bitch, my friends made me think the same.

[–]hazard2600 0 points1 point ago

Yup! It's called Dermotographia..oh crap. Someone already posted that. Well, I have it to. Back in school, kids in gym class would come up from behind me and draw art on my back. It doesn't take much pressure at all.

A Dr once told me that the T cells in my system are hyper sensitive so they look at any sort of trauma and immediately go after it. Causing the welts. Great if you ever get cut because generally the welting stops the bleeding. You heal quicker, but get much more scaring. And it itches like crazy for some reason after a slap like that.

It seems to fade a little bit as you get older. as I am 35 now. It doesn't welt up nearly that much any more.

[–]ukiyoe 140 points141 points ago

[–]Ashmen 36 points37 points ago

4 1/2 months too soon.

[–]Witnessed 72 points73 points ago

They must have seriously messed up on that high five.

[–]freakinhippies 41 points42 points ago

I like to think that he actually has a retractable hand in his back, and that massive welt is simply it not being able to go completely mesh with his back.

[–]Periculous22 0 points1 point ago

Should have waited for the next generation. They fixed that bug, and also included wifi!

[–]lmaoctopus 19 points20 points ago

Holy histamines, Batman!

[–]lullabyrequiem 11 points12 points ago

I currently have huuuge welts almost all over my body for no particular reason (it's called Non-Specific Urticaria). It would look so much cooler if they were hand-shaped

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]lullabyrequiem 0 points1 point ago

I take antihistamines 9 months of the year for hayfever, so they don't help much. When it happens I go on shot-term course of high strength cortisone tablets. Takes the welts down within hours but the side-effect is awful insomnia. Hellooooooo Stilnox! :)

[–]Yesohmigosh 11 points12 points ago

Castiel probably raised him from perdition.

[–]ImportedItalianNylon 9 points10 points ago

The Hamburger Helper guy is a dick.

[–]jj_yossarian 1 point2 points ago

What do you mean? He gave him a pat on the back.

[–]cormier1989 71 points72 points ago

haha I had an ex who had sensitive skin so I use to slap her on the ass when she was naked to leave my handprint. dont worry she liked it.

[–][deleted] 73 points74 points ago

Don't worry. We like it.

[–]zen_monkey 1 point2 points ago

Pics or it didn't happen.

[–]lullabyrequiem 2 points3 points ago

And this is why I scroll through the comments before posting :) Have an upvote, sir.

[–]red_280 12 points13 points ago

He was raised from perdition.

[–]worldisbetternow 6 points7 points ago

Ah, anyone remembers the girl with Dermatographic urticaria who did a thread on Reddit and wrote/created things on her skin based on comments?

edit: I cannot find the link

[–]meek-seek 3 points4 points ago

is it just me or does it look kinda warped in some areas as if it had been hit multiple times?

[–]funnyhowlifeworks 6 points7 points ago

It looks more like an extreme skin response to anything touching it, maybe some form of welts/hives.

[–]tonywb 2 points3 points ago

Looks like we share a rare skin condition, it's called dermographism. It's kinda cool but annoying too.

[–]Duskblade95 3 points4 points ago

I agree. as someone who has it, going swimming at the beach or lake when the water is cool and knowing you'll come out of the water with people staring at you because you're covered in welps sucks. But I tend to ignore mine, most of the time my parents noticed welts that I didn't and most kids at my highschool think it's cool for some odd reason.

[–]corpusdelenda 6 points7 points ago

Nobody uses the hand welt to draw a turkey? What a wasted opportunity.

[–]ddoubletake 1 point2 points ago

Someone did, look a little higher in the thread :)

[–]cjZombie 2 points3 points ago

Did Castiel raise you from Hell too?

[–]saumuribiz 1 point2 points ago

I was thinking its Dean from the back ~

[–]JafBot 2 points3 points ago

Dermatographic urticaria, I have it, idiopathically.
I can be in a nervous situation and BOOM I start itching and get really hot.
Sometimes I get a light graze and boom thick welt appears.

I can skin write and all sorts of shit, it's quite a cool thing.
EDIT: That's my arm, if you can't tell.

[–]mifune_toshiro 3 points4 points ago

What a mean, sausage-fingered person.

[–]Arex123 1 point2 points ago

It's called dermographia! I have this as well; that slap would not have needed to be seriously painful to cause this.

[–]nitcanavan 1 point2 points ago

LOOK ALIVE!

[–]henry_sellers 1 point2 points ago

That's called a red hand of Ulster where I come from!

[–]keelhauld 1 point2 points ago

[–]omplatt 0 points1 point ago

Gave my friend a 5 star like that but on his stomach. It lasted a week.

[–]dorky2 0 points1 point ago

I don't have that skin disease where you welt easily, and I have had a handprint like this on my butt. It looked worse than it felt. I don't know if it's different on your back where there's less padding, but it's not so bad on the ass.

[–]Aleywashernameo 0 points1 point ago
