What was really cool was on the PS1 version, once the map loaded, you could open the disc tray, put in a CD, and you could listen to your own CDs while playing that level.

[–]bbg2g 48 points49 points ago

Tony hawk games did that as well.

[–]TMobotron 119 points120 points ago

Yeah but why would you ever want to with Tony Hawk soundtracks?

[–]zeppelinofled 8 points9 points ago

tony hawk 2 was a such a good sound track!

[–]mykicksncharge 34 points35 points ago

TIL

[–]AustNerevar 22 points23 points ago

You could also insert the first game while playing the sequel, and then play the original levels from the first game with the cars and characters from the second. That was so freaking cool!

[–]The_Gentleman786 4 points5 points ago

There was a sequel?!!!! Damn my European location!!!

[–]buddahmonk 124 points125 points ago

[–]Vaelem 34 points35 points ago

Had to watch the entire video to relive it. Thank you.

[–]pande152 6 points7 points ago

Ahhh what was his vehicle... a 68 jefferson or something like that. He was my char of choice

[–]BigClifty 11 points12 points ago

This game looks amazing for the n64. During that "bass quake" the ground actually deformed. Pretty advanced for the N64. I wonder if I can still find it at an oldschool game store anywhere.

[–]Miserlou57 2 points3 points ago

Quite possibly the most satisfying special move in the history of gaming, ever.

[–]Rswany 2 points3 points ago

Can't go wrong with the '73 Leprechaun!

[–]Gilgamesh195 288 points289 points ago

I remember in the sequel that the stages changed if you did certain things. For example, in the manor stage if you destroyed the floodgates the entire level would flood, or in Arizona if you destroyed an observatory a meteor would crash and if you went to check on it a giant space ant would come out and start wrecking shit.

They don't make games like these anymore... Thank you so much for the memories.

[–]bigshocka 64 points65 points ago

You could launch into the air in the Florida map.

[–]AustNerevar 8 points9 points ago

I loved launching up up there! Was so much fun! You could find all kinds of weapons and shit up there.

[–]RogueA 55 points56 points ago

Could also blow up the nuclear reactors on that one stage, twelve year old me got so much enjoyment out of that.

[–]Tofusteak 38 points39 points ago

You are now on a terrorist watch list =P

[–]RogueA 19 points20 points ago

:(

[–]AwesomeFacebookYes 37 points38 points ago

You're off of it now. Homeland Security's only weakness is adorable emoticons.

[–]KangarooLemonade 17 points18 points ago

The ant part made me nostalgia.

[–]Beetrain 13 points14 points ago

Vigilante 8: Second Offense

[–]MauiWowieOwie 4 points5 points ago

So mhch of this. I loved that game. The schoolbus was definitely my favorite.

[–]human_gs 8 points9 points ago

TIL observatories keeps us from dying to meteors

[–]Brian33 577 points578 points ago

This game was THE SHIT!

[–]dboy999 121 points122 points ago

Fuck yea dude i spent hours playing this on my N64

[–][deleted] 59 points60 points ago

Me too. I used to rent this game quite often, it was cool. Seriously makes me wish that N64 had online connectivity, that game would have been bee hive bus good online.

[–]Since_been 27 points28 points ago

bro you can totally play project 64 online. LETS FUCKING DO IT

edit: LFM TO ACTUALLY DO THIS

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

How does it work? Does one of us host the game, we both control a split screen, but the other person looks at a streaming video of the hosted game? That actually sounds, like fun. Like it could be done with a large group of users, who can watch and talk about the game between turns.

[–]Mcshivers 32 points33 points ago

Agree 100%. I am not ashamed to say I spent a vast amount of time with this game in comparison to twisted metal.

[–]AmsterdamUG 24 points25 points ago

I did as well. The single player on vigilante 8 was a lot better imo.

[–]mauro8342 43 points44 points ago

THE SHIT!

[–]ness96 25 points26 points ago

THE SHIT!!

[–]Shnead 30 points31 points ago

of you

[–]NeonSummer 25 points26 points ago

Someone plug that 4chan leak.

[–]EmergencyMedical 7 points8 points ago

My god, I remember playing this all the time at my cousins house. I was talking to my brother about it the other day, but couldn't remember the name.

[–]xStagief 3 points4 points ago

That was my first thought. I remember this game from when I would play with my dad when I was young. I forgot the name of the game until now!

[–]panda_assassin 52 points53 points ago

BEEEEESSSS

[–]raginghamster 15 points16 points ago

your weapons are USELESS AGAINST THEM

[–]Aniluk 14 points15 points ago

Best level for the BEEEEESSSS. The Farm Although I think he says SWARM instead of bees.

[–]Qaidiil 55 points56 points ago

One of the most glorious games I ever played on the N64.

[–]komodotkom 53 points54 points ago

i can never forget that chick with the afro: "I might be half human, but I'm all woman.."

[–]Nomida 1 point2 points ago

I really want a video clip of this, it always cracked me up. Can't seem to find one :(

[–]LATKE_IN_MY_TUCHES 7 points8 points ago

[–]ImmatureIntellect 43 points44 points ago

So many hours spent on this game! The sleepovers were great! Getting into fights with the older bro...good times, good times.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]pfitz6 2 points3 points ago

Sounds like nhl blitz or w/e that franchise was.

[–]anotherdeadhero 2 points3 points ago

Could be Wayne Gretzky 98 or something, would hit the yellow arrows for hard checks, man that game was so simple and fun.

[–]alphaEJ 42 points43 points ago

This and 2nd offense were the shit back then for me

[–]Argoti 36 points37 points ago

2nd Offense was so great. Especially the title song.

[–]hawkofglory 7 points8 points ago

i remember when we got a rocket to launch at one of the levels it was awesome

[–]Ghost_Layton 4 points5 points ago

I still sing that song sometimes at work.

[–]Taylor586 5 points6 points ago

The levels were so awesome in 2nd offense. And how the cars could get upgrades and drive on water and such and the event things that happened like that meteor that crashed into that crater and a giant ant came out, etc. Great game. I wanna play it now :(

[–]SeedyOne 43 points44 points ago

I was all about Interstate '76 on the PC. Damn I would love a decent remake of that.

[–]jslacks 13 points14 points ago

Yeah, I76 was amazing. Including the soundtrack.

Edit: Sample track on Youtube

[–]GilThielander 5 points6 points ago

I kept the music disk in my '84 Monte Carlo when I drove around in high school. What a great game.

[–]Mineshaft_Gap 5 points6 points ago

That's because it was a massively superior game.

It was a more detailed combat, had good voice acting at a time when it was still a rarity (John De-frigging-Lancie, man!), it was far more of a celebration of the '70s, rather than making fun of them, the opening titles were truly awesome, I could go on.

It is, apparently, on GOG...

...never get out of the car.

[–]BlackFallout 36 points37 points ago

Down, Down, Up, R2.

Fuck yea. Played this on my PSone the most.

[–]dennis_pennis 5 points6 points ago

Having 2 special moves for each weapon, and the combo system added quite a lot of depth to the game.

My favourite tactic was screening my mates, when I saw them driving too slow I would use the mortar special 'turtle turnover' ( ▽ ▽ ▽ r2) to flip their car, then unleash hell with the other mortar special (▽ ▽ △ r2) plus a normal mortar plus clyde's lightning special. That 3 hit combo would pretty much leave anyone on half health... ahh the memories.

[–]AlertAtheist 268 points269 points ago

I actually preferred Vigilante 8 to Twisted Metal...

[–]NextTimeonDBZ 49 points50 points ago

Both were amazing, but V8 came out later and had MUCH better controls. My god is TM2 is so floaty, and the series fell off until Black.

Honestly, why couldn't people play both? It's not like the market for car combat games is crowded.

[–]schwab002 17 points18 points ago

I played both. Despite the controls for TM2 it's my all time favorite. Vigilante 8 was definitely sweet too.

[–]Polonimisev 10 points11 points ago

The controls for Vigilante 8 were great but I prefered the twisted metal 2 story. I played so much just to know what happened to Axel when you finished the game with him.

[–]schwab002 5 points6 points ago

Yep. Also, the game was quite hard which kept me coming back!

I'd always play co-op with my friend, and if we ever died in LA we'd reset the game immediately. We only allowed 1 death in Moscow, otherwise we'd reset as well. I wasn't allowed to use remote's because I was always a bit too trigger happy, and would blow myself up too often, so my buddy almost always took those.

Falling off buildings in NY or Icebergs in Antarctica was the bane of my existence. Holland was such an awesome shit-show (still difficult as hell). I have some very fond memories of blowing up the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

I recently tried TM2 again with my friend on his PS3, and we could barely get to Holland. I don't know how we beat it so many times...

[–]PandaGoggles 12 points13 points ago

Seconded!

[–]bryntheskits 4 points5 points ago

Somewhat relevant, I never played the first Vigilante 8 but I played the sequel, Vigilante 8: Second Offence. Man I loved that game, I can't find it anywhere :(

[–]My_Cool_Name 4 points5 points ago

There is a vigilante 8 hd on the xbl arcade.

[–]bryntheskits 2 points3 points ago

wow how did I not know this, thanks!

[–]Roxasnraziel 34 points35 points ago

This game truly was a lot of fun. Disco, aliens, hippies, and the wanton destruction of all of the above. This and Rogue Trip are my two favorite auto-combat games, but Rogue Trip is damned-near IMPOSSIBLE to find.

[–]sigint_bn 14 points15 points ago

Rogue Trip was gone from my collection. A friend borrowed it, and never returned it back. I ask about it sometimes whenever I meet him, and his wanton disregard of it makes me want to kill him again.

[–]FolloweroftheAtom 4 points5 points ago

Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012...

HOLY SHIT, I JUST REALIZED, ROGUE TRIP HAPPENS IN 2012!

[–]sedated14 9 points10 points ago

EFFIN' A. Rogue Trip was the shit. Remember there was a hidden vehicle, the UFO? Shit was righteous, killed lotsa people with that. And that remote controlled missiles was awesome.

[–]GuilleX 22 points23 points ago

BEST. GAME. OF. MY. WHOLE. LIFE.

[–]Gilgamesh195 15 points16 points ago

THE UFO...!

[–]scmathie 14 points15 points ago

LIGHT'NIN'!

[–]dukefan779 10 points11 points ago

I forgot all about this fucking game until now!!! Great game!!!

[–]rxninja 10 points11 points ago

ENHANCED WITH 8MB RAM EXPANSION!

[–]Jaydels 12 points13 points ago

Anyone ever play Beetle Adventure Racing for N64??? The definition of a hidden gem...

[–]DancesWithReddit 19 points20 points ago

SOMEBODY ELSE ACTUALLY FUCKING PLAYED THAT GAME!!

[–]AgentUmlaut 6 points7 points ago

I may be half human, but all woman. How I remember that character's selection voice is beyond me.

Houston 3!

[–]GuilleX 6 points7 points ago

This was not-doubt-at-all THE game of my infancy. I'v played this in the Playstation like no other game ever... and every single memory is still healthy. Thank you OP.

[–]BruisedWillis 6 points7 points ago

Vigilante 8 was so great, I wish a new one was released....

[–]AugustSun 7 points8 points ago

That moment where you could RIDE ON THE FUCKING BLIMP IN THE CITY LEVEL. SO AWESOME.

[–]TGBambino 6 points7 points ago

Fuck that! Interstate 76 was the best!

[–]gunzerker 5 points6 points ago

probably my most played N64 game, even over goldeneye. SWAAAARRRMMM

[–]Bandit1379 5 points6 points ago

Had this for the PlayStation, fucking loved it. Such an awesome game.

[–]MegaMasterSneaky 6 points7 points ago

DYNAMITE!!

[–]jeffydomer 10 points11 points ago

Also, Rush 2049 for N64 had a ton more features than the arcade version. 4 player split screen battles with my brother and our friends, is how we spent our summer vacation.

[–]crashohno 3 points4 points ago

Loved that game! Had it my freshman year of college, played every day with the roommates.

[–]jeffydomer 4 points5 points ago

Oh man, and do you remember stunt mode? There needs to be more games that have winged cars.

[–]crashohno 2 points3 points ago

Landing it was like 90% dumb freaking luck. So many awesome memories. I loved that game. I found a dreamcast at the local thrift store for 10 bucks, miraculously got it working and ordered Rush 2049 from Amazon.

[–]omgwtfbbq7 2 points3 points ago

My elementary school buddy's mom was in the credits of Rush (I forget which one) and she got an arcade version (full blown machine) of the game along with the PS1 versions a month or so before they shipped. It was the shit. Had the same deal with all of the Crash Bandicoot series during the PS1 era, minus the arcade and later with the Armored Core series. Too bad he moved.

[–]two2tone22 4 points5 points ago

dat secret level

[–]eSsEnCe_Of_EcLiPsE 2 points3 points ago

there were 3 secret levels and they were all the shit!

[–]3njoi1t 4 points5 points ago

OH THE NOSTALGIA!

[–]bilbro_swaggins 4 points5 points ago

I LOVED this game. Those green power-ups were the shit. I hated the bee's so much

[–]samred92 5 points6 points ago

I have this for Dreamcast but I've never actually played it because it doesn't support VGA display. Is it worth pulling out the standard A/V cable in order to play?

[–]deathofthesun 7 points8 points ago

Hell yes it is. One of the main reasons I kept a Dreamcast.

[–]ransomnator 3 points4 points ago

SWWARRM!

[–]GarrettSucks 3 points4 points ago

Im pretty sure everyone who ever played this game, never thought anyone else knew what it was. I LOVE THIS GAME!!!

[–]AC-M 5 points6 points ago

This and Road Rash were my favorites.

[–]russbaker37 4 points5 points ago

If I had to choose, Rush 2049 was the best "car-shooter" game. Although, it was mainly a racing game, the battle mode was so much fun.

[–]Daydu 3 points4 points ago

Nobody, NOBODY had shit on Loki.

[–]Coldara 2 points3 points ago

loki was shit, you could dodge his special by simply driving fast

[–]jacobish 3 points4 points ago

Spent endless hours with my friend setting all the bots to the school bus. Oh the memories...

[–]Henshin_A_JoJo 3 points4 points ago

fuck yeah man

[–]willtodd 3 points4 points ago

Beeswax: "I'm gonna sting ya real gooood!"

[–]Hector_Kur 4 points5 points ago

I fucking love that vehicle combat was its own damn genre. The 90s could be really fun when they wanted to be.

[–]brokeNtoken1 4 points5 points ago

I am sad that you said substitute. I spent an heinous amount of time enjoying this and second offense. I played hours of the twisted metal series as well, however the Vigilante 8 series will always by my favorite of the vehicular combat genre. The playstation version had some great advantages as well. If you inserted the disc for the first game on the map selection screen of second offense, you gained access to all the maps. You could even remove the disc during the game to insert any of your own cds for a customized sound track.

[–]MetalicAngel 3 points4 points ago

Oh, please! This was mine: Streets Of Simcity

[–]TSammich 2 points3 points ago

Interstate 76 was better

[–]RiNgO70 5 points6 points ago

There is a remake of it on the xbox LIVE arcade.

[–]STEELIX 7 points8 points ago

because its TERRIBLE!!!

was such a shame...I bought it thinking it would be the shit, played it once then...never played it again

[–]Brutal_Angel 4 points5 points ago

But no one ever, plays it! even if only 400 ms points!

[–]RiNgO70 6 points7 points ago

True, I bought it, played it once, and NEVER played it again.

[–]Fulller 2 points3 points ago

Lightnin'!

[–]OG_Hash 2 points3 points ago

You have rekindled my childhood

[–]MAY_15_2012 2 points3 points ago

Played it a few times, but the twisted metals were intense.

[–]DucSteve 2 points3 points ago

Bonus about this game was me learning how to properly pronounce vigilante.

[–]Sanosuke97322 2 points3 points ago

I forgot to return that game and was charged a late fee that was more than the cost of the game, so my mom just bought it. Best oops of my life right there.

[–]MomirV1g 2 points3 points ago

I remember this from memory because we didn't have a memory card. jtbt7cfd1lrmgw unlocks everything.

It is now my password on many sites (modified heavily from original form)

[–]mstrmatt 2 points3 points ago

Played this and Twisted metal on the ps1. Legendary games.

[–]rmorley1 2 points3 points ago

I love this game. Still have my copy for PS1 but I no longer have a working PS1 and PS3s don't play PS1 games. WTF!

[–]andysaxman18 2 points3 points ago

Fucking LOVED thissssssssssssss and 2nd offense!!

[–]lilianvoss 2 points3 points ago

Spent around 500 hours playing this with my younger brother. Best days of old.

[–]blair9123 2 points3 points ago

I PLAYED THIS SHIT SO FUCKING MUCH.

Did anyone else get to play as the UFO?

the jeep with the rockets on the back was my favorite.

[–]stinger503 2 points3 points ago

Man, the hours I spent playing the game so I would have the story videos completed in order...

[–]IHeartAmber 2 points3 points ago

Does anybody remember this gem?

[–]essenseVA 2 points3 points ago

The robotic chick in the Palomino was the best

[–]mygrinderisjammed 2 points3 points ago

I just registered to profess my love on the internet for this game.

I love you,

Love, me

[–]sharkmeet 2 points3 points ago

Interstate '76 made this game look like shit. This one was good too though.

[–]Endyo 6 points7 points ago

Only the super cool played this

[–]Metallion66 6 points7 points ago

This game was hands down way better than Twisted Metal.

[–]STEELIX 2 points3 points ago

Better than twisted metal!

[–]PlayerUno 1 point2 points ago

I would kill to own this on my N64 today :( Used to play in endless amounts of time with my best friend.

[–]SirDerpingtonThe3rd 1 point2 points ago

loved this game.

[–]samiami 1 point2 points ago

dude, I was just thinking about this game earlier at work! I was going to post something about it on here, but you were probably posting while I was thinking, bastard wizardry. Tis a great game.

[–]SmilingMason 1 point2 points ago

I guess I would say the violence is toned down in that game, but doesn't it curse quite a bit? I could just be imagining it, it has been well over a decade since I played it.

[–]xiggy 1 point2 points ago

This was a great game, but it never occurred to me, were there 7 Vigilante games prior to this one?

[–]partycentralsupplies 2 points3 points ago

V8 refers to an engine configuration. A V configuration with 8 cylinders.

For the record more cylinders = more better. :D

[–]Dimatizer 1 point2 points ago

This game was so much fun. Played with Shiela. You get the special and both kinds of rockets then just spam fire and switch weapons at the same time to get crazy multipliers. You wrecked enemies so fast that way.

[–]Pippkorn 1 point2 points ago

I remember playing this game as a kid, I sucked at it but still thought it was fun. So awesome too see it again!

[–]FatefulThoughts 1 point2 points ago

I still have the cartridge. On the shelf next to mario party. I always used the hillbilly in the camper truck.

[–]ImShawn 1 point2 points ago

DUDE. So much nostalgia. I never owned the game though. My mother would let us rent video games sometimes, and this was always our first choice. None of us really had any idea how to play the game, then again, if I remember right, all you did is crash into shit. We'd stay up late and milk the little time we had with the game dry.

[–]Hudek 1 point2 points ago

Right in the nostalgia. Thank you for the childhood memories.

[–]Dip_Shit 1 point2 points ago

Why...couldnt you play twisted metal?

[–]TehSvenn 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I remember trying to drive 2 cars at once in multiplayer, just by myself. I was definitely trying to re-enact that shitty music video Ride Wit Me. DON'T JUDGE ME!

[–]dantaeos 1 point2 points ago

I love you.

[–]FrostFire626 1 point2 points ago

This was better than the twisted metals in some ways.

[–]I_Do_Not_Lie 1 point2 points ago

"you have the right to remain silent...permanently"

[–]mr-scratch 1 point2 points ago

love the second one. fully upgrading all the vehicles was so satisfying, and an awesome game mechanic. love that it completely changes the vehicle appearance.

[–]CloudCircus 1 point2 points ago

Why couldn't you play Twisted Metal? You were allowed Twizzlers weren't you? "We're twisted and we like it," or so the commercial went.

[–]Juanathin 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit that game. Whenever I went over to my friends house when I was younger we would play that instead of do kids stuff. Greatest game ever.

[–]itsgucci_brosef 1 point2 points ago

all i remember from that game was the one lady character who said, "I may be half human, but I'm all woman"

[–]sir5ur 1 point2 points ago

i played this, TM3 and TM2. Loved both titles so damn much. I am sorry you couldn't play twisted metal my friend, it made for some good times.

[–]goldenjoehead 1 point2 points ago

EARTHQUAAAAAKE

[–]SlyCanadian 1 point2 points ago

Still have this downstairs. It's time to bust out the N64!

[–]DrCoquenbols 1 point2 points ago

I had both, but I always loved Vigilante 8 because it showed semi-accurate bullet holes when the base machine guns shot you.

[–]Pocketcheeze 1 point2 points ago

Did anybody beat the game and unlock the alien?

[–]Pocketcheeze 1 point2 points ago

Did anybody beat the game and unlock the alien?

[–]PlatypusTickler 1 point2 points ago

I had this for Play Station.

[–]LINCKING 1 point2 points ago

I played twisted metal, and because i was my bestfriends no.2; i always had to be mr.grimm.

i am mr.grimm to this day

[–]Nomida 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I don't care what the Continue? guys think, this game was great. Really makes me wish I could play it again actually.

[–]Cub147 1 point2 points ago

Thank you! Hell yes!!!

[–]kilbert66 1 point2 points ago

V8: Second Offense was better, though.

[–]emo_kakyo 1 point2 points ago

I could never play violent video games when I was a child, so this was my substitute.

[–]jvardrake 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for taking the time to let us know.

I, for one, will sleep better tonight knowing that I know.

[–]superdookieness 1 point2 points ago

[–]ericleeparker 1 point2 points ago

this game won't work on my emulator :(

[–]StainMcGorver 1 point2 points ago

OMG! YESSSSSS! <3

[–]therealpsychx 1 point2 points ago

Oh, God. Yes.

[–]kobra207 1 point2 points ago

I may be half-machine, but I'm ALL WOMAN... Game rules...

[–]SpeakEasyOR 1 point2 points ago

"I may be half human but Im ALL woman."

[–]ace2049ns 1 point2 points ago

Omg! I never had this one, but I had the second one. It was my favorite game for Dreamcast besides the sonic games. I now have it on an emulator on my PC. I fucking love this game!

[–]BlindRob 1 point2 points ago

STEEL GOPHER!

[–]Ryan8905 1 point2 points ago

This game was better that twisted metal

[–]ArtemisLives 1 point2 points ago

Lightnin'!!!

[–]TrashCrap 1 point2 points ago

I played Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012

[–]leitz010 1 point2 points ago

White lightning!

[–]rumblez 1 point2 points ago

Could never forget the commercial either.

[–]electric_drifter 1 point2 points ago

WE NEED A REMAKE!

[–]jihad_dildo 1 point2 points ago

Anyone here had the Twisted Metal Party CD? The one with TM 1,2,3,4.

[–]Muffinviking 1 point2 points ago

GRIDLOCK!

[–]fumabomb 1 point2 points ago

"I MAY BE HALF HUMAN... but i'm all woman ;)"

[–]OMallyRed 1 point2 points ago

JTBT7CFD1LRMGW. And trust me when I say that's from memory.

[–]Andy_T 1 point2 points ago

TIL that Alexander Ovechkin chose the number 8 after this game..

[–]FireBreathingElk 1 point2 points ago

[–]CalicoLime 1 point2 points ago

So many years of raging at the school bus and breaking out in a cold sweat when you hear Beezwax shouting "Kill Em!"

[–]eviltane 1 point2 points ago
