I loved the ending. although the last 30 pages or so felt a little rushed

[–]plasterofparisDistrict 4[S] 21 points22 points ago

I do agree that it was kinda rushed, but it was nice nonetheless. I've been arguing with my friends since yesterday because I was the only one who didn't think Katniss was being a bitch.

[–]Wrongchoicechooser 9 points10 points ago

why'd they think katniss was a bitch? If anything, Gale was being bitchy for just ditching everyone for his nice job in district 2.

[–]Mizubaws 7 points8 points ago

I had hoped Gale would die. That guy is just a major dick.

[–]KingKidd 3 points4 points ago

From the perspective we see, he's never really understood IMO. He's much more than Katniss ever expected him to be and isn't who she thought he was.

[–]Chichi778 0 points1 point ago

It's no her fault she didn't exactly "love" him. He let her know at the last minute! I'm really glad she chose who she did. I was going to be pissed otherwise. I also liked that it was a bittersweet kind of ending.

[–]dscott7 -1 points0 points ago

Parallel Novel from Gale's perspective?

[–]RavenWriterDistrict 11 9 points10 points ago

I thought this was the Avatar the Last Airbender Subreddit for a sec, and since the seasons are referred to as "books," I was a bit confused when you started talking about pages of the book...

[–]2011StlCards 1 point2 points ago

LoK and Hunger games are basically all Ive done the last month

[–]SMac127 2 points3 points ago

Month well spent

[–]2011StlCards 0 points1 point ago

damn straight! Except tonight's game sucked

[–]BrilliantHamologist 32 points33 points ago

I thought it was perfect. It acknowledges the victors' continued struggle with PTSD and their commitment to work towards healing.

[–]cac2976 17 points18 points ago

I can't think of an alternate ending without it feeling cheesy. I thought the series ended well.

[–]Dionbry 20 points21 points ago

I loved the ending because it was so realistic and just tragic. Here is an analogy my friend had for book 3.

"It's like you buy this piece of chocolate candy and you're getting really close to the center and you're all excited, but it's not a chocolate or caramel center it's this generic strawberry flavor. You're surprised but not pissed off and you like it ok just you had hoped for the chocolate but your life will go on because it was just candy and it was still good."

[–]caitlinreid 5 points6 points ago

Realistic?

[–]aggie1391District 5 17 points18 points ago

Being forced into a fight to the death twice, a few battles, and seeing your sister killed? Crazy PTSD, which I think is reflected in those last few dozen pages.

[–]plasterofparisDistrict 4[S] 3 points4 points ago

Maybe you should put a spoiler tag on those.

[–]crazeguy 6 points7 points ago

You've already said that this was about the 3rd book.

[–]Dionbry 6 points7 points ago

Well if you're sibling died and your world was crushed you would probably be depressed for the rest of your life

[–]dontuthinkimwittyTT 12 points13 points ago

I liked the ending because I thought it was fair. Fans got the Kat & Peeta they wanted, but at a high price.

Agreed with the rushed part though

[–]dscott7 -2 points-1 points ago

I didn't want Kat and Peeta. She screwed over Gale.

[–]TeganNichelleDistrict 12 8 points9 points ago

Nope... I loved it... I think it ended the only way that it could, and exactly as it should. Obviously a little longer epilogue or lead in to it would have been nice. But I was happy with the ending. Especially after how dark the final book had been up until then.

[–]TheMoonandAntarctica 9 points10 points ago

Kinda yes.

I don't understand why people say it's realistic. Most things resolved too quickly for it to be realistic. Gale for one, katniss never has to make an explicit choice. He's just written off (though I think there's a message in there). This happens again with the whole Snow thing. I was anxiously waiting to see if Katniss would make a morally correct decision when it came to killing him, but she didn't even have to. We don't even find out how he's killed. Seems like a cop out. Also, the rebels win the war way too easily. One of my favorite parts of the books was Collins' realistic take on war. She was able to portray the conflict without making it dry. I understand that it's a young adults book so you can't expect her to make war seem too brutal but jeez they won that war in a matter of months.

On the bright side, I liked most of the book up until Boggs dies. I also loved the last page.

Sometimes I think Collins had a deadline and was pressured to fit the book under 400 pages or so because of the targeted readership. Feels bad man.

[–]Wrongchoicechooser 2 points3 points ago

i thought snow died from being crushed on his pillar due to the swarm of people around him or something? but yea she didn't really make a lot of the actually take over of the capitol clear.

[–]TheMoonandAntarctica 0 points1 point ago

Its never really established. He's either crushed to death or died from that cough. What if that had happened to any other character? Say if you didnt know if Prim was killed by the bombs or by a lose shot to the chest or if Coin was killed by katniss or maybe she had a heart attack. See what I mean? Seems like a cop out. Snow was an important enough character, kill him or don't.

[–]LockeVanishDistrict 3 2 points3 points ago

Collins didn't do Finnick proper justice. I also disliked how Gale, Katniss's mother, and Haymitch just disappear and/or never talk to Katniss again. It was really disappointing that she was so utterly alone for such a long period of time (before Peeta shows up).

[–]nomegustanosleepDistrict 4 21 points22 points ago

yes

[–]rainbowtutucoutu 6 points7 points ago

Preach! It was a realistic conclusion. It didn't need sparkles or a house with a white picket fence where there is no sadness.

[–]LockeVanishDistrict 3 5 points6 points ago

How do you know the houses in Victor's Village don't have white picket fences?

[–]plasterofparisDistrict 4[S] 5 points6 points ago

Liked* I'm sorry. :(

[–]avatizer 6 points7 points ago

I think it's by far the best section of the series. I was so worried we'd get a cop out happily ever after for everyone ending, so I was all the more satisfied with what we got.

[–]lilianegypt 0 points1 point ago

That was my thing. I'm really glad that it didn't end with a "happily ever after" and I think that is what bothers a lot of people. But I don't understand how someone can read through three books of this young girl constantly fighting for her life and the lives I those she loves (starvation and fights to the death...serious business) and somehow expect everything to turn out all right. I thought it was way more realistic to portray her as alone and traumatized and, in a way, settling for Peeta. There was no great love story, and many important characters died. I really enjoyed that aspect of it. So to me, the ending was great.

[–]_Shin_ 3 points4 points ago

Third book was fantastic. A lot of my friends complained about not having that perfect happy ending where the winner always wins and the guy gets the girl. The primary focus was not a love story, and the way it was ended hit me harder emotionally than any other ending would have. In a writer's point of view, if was done very well. Can't complain using a reader's narrow perspective.

[–]IceLeggerDistrict 2 2 points3 points ago

I really didn't enjoy the main character Katniss until the end of the book, so yes I loved the end of the third book.

[–]Darkest_97 1 point2 points ago

I didn't have a problem with the ending per se. I disliked how it rushed to get to the end and everyone kinda died quickly.

[–]Wrongchoicechooser 4 points5 points ago

it took me like three times to finally realize that finnick, actually finnick, had died. I really didn't think she would have killed him, especially so quickly! ;-;

[–]shesrightyouknowDistrict 4 1 point2 points ago

He didn't die ok he is with Lupin and having a grand old time.

[–]macswishbliketDistrict 13 1 point2 points ago

I liked it. It was bittersweet for me but I thought that it fit the end of the series well.

[–]rebekahelisabeth94 1 point2 points ago

I adored the end of the book. I was so angry throughout most of it because everything that could go wrong, did, but I feel like the very end sort of fixed that. I'll never get over what happened to those characters, but really, it was the only way to end it to make it a good story, and have the reader be happy.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

I dont think anything she could have done would have made everyone happy but i personally thought it was slightly rushed but i still loved it.

[–]angelsinsDistrict 12 3 points4 points ago

I didn't realise anyne had a problem with the ending. I would have loved to hear more about Katniss and Peeta's life, but I also would have liked to hear more about between Hogwarts and the snippet at the end of Deahtly Hallows, so, whatever. I figure it did what the author intended!

[–]kayleighkilljoyDistrict 4 4 points5 points ago

I liked it too :).

[–]HiggyBabyDistrict 8 3 points4 points ago

I loved it!

[–]Psychozoa 1 point2 points ago

You are not. I absolutely loved the series as a whole, I predicted the ending and I was very pleased with it.

[–]your21girl 1 point2 points ago

I loved the way it ended.

[–]KISSOLOGYDistrict 2 0 points1 point ago

Post a direct link to the image, not imgur. This way i shows up better with RES

[–]plasterofparisDistrict 4[S] 2 points3 points ago

I'll keep that in mind, thanks!

[–]fitroxDistrict 13 0 points1 point ago

I can't image a different ending. In the very end you see that her life was full of violence and rage. She was used and manipulated over and over and just watched everyone she loves die. She "saved" the future but chose for pacific life back in 12.

[–]dazy143District 4 0 points1 point ago

Agree. I know a lot of people who don't like the third book too. At first, I was taken aback by the ending and had to let it sink in, but by the second time I read it I liked it. The ending is a bit rushed and may seem confusing to some, so I'm hoping to movie will do justice and maybe show what's going on other than Katniss's PTSD.

I've read and seen much worse and unfair endings before. At least Collins showed us that life does go on instead of leaving the book on a entirely depressing note.

[–]BagOnuts 0 points1 point ago

I liked the ending result, but not how it was executed.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I liked the ending, however Finnick's death made me cry :(

[–]AlexisVonTrappe 0 points1 point ago

I liked the ending it seemed like realistic to me. And I love Peeta so of course I am glad they ended up together.

[–]salazar_slytherin 0 points1 point ago

The plot twists towards the end of the novel could've led up to another novel, which I would've appreciated. I liked how it ended, though. The epilogue? Well, all epilogues are stupid.

[–]that_jerrykid 0 points1 point ago

The book was amazing! The creativity was well thought out. It was just the last couple of chapters that were insanely rushed. But the last few paragraph was perfect.

[–]skybison_derpette 0 points1 point ago

i always wanted her to be with peeta, but it was just so depressing!

[–]JesusPits 0 points1 point ago

Yep you are...

[–]urmik1999District 4 0 points1 point ago

I was seriously going to make this and you beat me to it! Hat's off to you! But yeah, I loved all of the third book, and people usually hate it, it's sad actually.

[–]magic_is_mightDistrict 12 -2 points-1 points ago

Yes, you are the only one.

[–]lebanon100 -5 points-4 points ago

I feel i am the only one on teem gale. I thought they should have been together from the start. Peeta seemed cute and nice but definetly not husband material luke how it ended. He seemed more like the guy you crush on on highschool. He seemed fake too. All the haters of gale can downvote this haha i dont care. Just puttinf out my feelings

[–]I_Spell_You_Smell 2 points3 points ago

You probably meant to say 'definitely'.

[–]lebanon100 -1 points0 points ago

Yeah. Sorry I was in a hurry and really wanted to put what I thought out there. I knew someone was going to comment about my spelling haha.

[–]Wrongchoicechooser 2 points3 points ago

I think gale would have been the right choice for a healthy katniss. But peeta seems to make more sense for her after everything they went through together and how they both changed.

[–]lebanon100 -2 points-1 points ago

I slightly agree. I mean they went through a lot together her and Peeta, but Katniss was never healthy. She almost died a lot of times from starvation. Gale helped her through that. Gale helped her through YEARS of her life while Peeta only helped her through less then 1 year!

[–]brandonpb 1 point2 points ago

Peeta saved her life initially with the bread. Had that not happened, there would be no Katniss for Gale to help. I also don't think Gale would have been necessary for her survival all those years. While he did help get extra food, I think she could have survived on her own.

[–]lebanon100 -1 points0 points ago

But she would have gone crazy in the process. Gale was there for her to talk to and supported her.

[–]BigMacWithGreenBeans 1 point2 points ago

And then his bombs killed her sister. Because of that, things would never have worked out.

She and Gale might have gone through a lot, but what she and Peeta went through together in the arena twice and him thinking she's a muttation was much greater.

[–]lebanon100 -1 points0 points ago

her and peeta seemed like they should have been friends

[–]angelsinsDistrict 12 1 point2 points ago

Downvoting for not being able to type, not for your opinion.

However, I think Gale is a little too angry for Katniss, and that she absolutely made the right decision. Peeta mellows her, and he does make her a better person, and she knows it.

I also hate the Team Gale/Peeta/Edward/Jacob/Whoever-the-fuck-else thing. It needs to end.

Edit: I can has grammar now?

[–]LockeVanishDistrict 3 5 points6 points ago

Downvoting for not being able to type, not for you opinion.

not for your opinion. FTFY.

Otherwise, I agree with what you said.

[–]angelsinsDistrict 12 2 points3 points ago

...O_o oh god, thanks for pointing that out.

[–]lebanon100 -4 points-3 points ago

Yeah sorry about the typing!! And yes, Peeta mellows her out at some point but Gale and her went through a lot also. The whole "team" thing though doesn't really come from Twilight. People choose sides for a lot of things like war, fights, who they like more, t.v shows, ect. It just happens that in this case, it's a movie.

[–]angelsinsDistrict 12 -1 points0 points ago

I don't really care where it comes from. What bothers me is when people use it to pick sides for something that isn't a game or a battle. It just sounds so ridiculous and childish to me, and I'm sure lots of people agree.

[–]lebanon100 -2 points-1 points ago

Wel the book sort of made it a fight for who katniss was going to chose..

[–]cmhooleyDistrict 8 -1 points0 points ago

Nope, I loved it. The only dislike is I thought Finnick's death was unnecessary.

[–]AlexisVonTrappe -1 points0 points ago

Death of a loved character is necessary for a good book. I think sometimes it reflects real life in that life isn't fair even if we want it to be or even when we think people deserve a happy ending.

[–]cmhooleyDistrict 8 0 points1 point ago

That's what I think Prim's death is good for. I feel Finnick's was just unnecessary and almost forced.

[–]AlexisVonTrappe 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I could see that. I cried when he died.

[–]DiabolicPantsDistrict 13 -1 points0 points ago

Yes.
