Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Here's what we should do. Fly the best, highest quality camera's we can to the moon or mars along with some nukes, and create some really awesome desktop backrounds.

[–]ne1av1cr 6 points7 points ago

Why? That's the question that comes to mind every time I see this picture.

Does it have that general shape or if not that shape, that general structure each time? Is the structure actually a structure or is it just randomness my monkey-brain is imposing upon it?
If you set off two 'identical' bombs would they look just the same at this point?

[–]jlewTheEgr 5 points6 points ago

Its roughly spherical, which would happen for any bomb in a stable, uniform atmosphere. The spikes at the bottom edge are actually tendrils that ran along the supporting wires for the tower.

[–]ne1av1cr 1 point2 points ago

Oh, that's fantastic! I was wondering about the spikes!

[–]jlewTheEgr 0 points1 point ago

I don't remember where I learned about that, but I'll see if I can't dig up the source.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rope_trick_effect

Perhaps not the most reputable source ever depending on who you ask, but definitely an easy to understand description of this effect.

The wiki article does a good job explaining the "mottling" effect you see. I personally couldn't understand it but maybe you can:

Basically it's do with how the shot cab is ejected and vaporized.

[–]TrollDruid 4 points5 points ago

The things protruding at the bottom must be the heat advancing on the wires (better conductors of heat) that helped support the tower in which the bomb was sitting.

[–]Araneidae 1 point2 points ago

Not conduction, radiative absorption. As the wiki article linked above explains, painting the wires black increases the effect, silvering them eliminates it.

I wish that we could still carry out over ground nuclear tests now that we have imaging tech that's so many orders of magnitude better than what was around back in the 40s-60s.

[–]Usakar 5 points6 points ago

Let me put it like this:

Chernobyll was a joke in terms of gerneral radiation compared to the "testing times" in which it was way higher. Fokushima almost isn't worth mentioning compared to the atmomic testing times.

So probably not worth it.

You're right of course, but the images would be awesome.

I cannot comprehend the thought processes behind detonating hundreds of nuclear devices within the borders of your own country (United States).

[–]phsyco 9 points10 points ago

We like explosions. BIG explosions.

[–]thanks_for_the_fish 0 points1 point ago

Because 'MURIKA, darnit.

[–]KaJashey 0 points1 point ago

Well we started with other people's countries. Japan, Pacific islanders, Bikini Atoll, Then we brought it home where we could have more supposed control. We even tested other people's weapons for them on our own country.

It is just insane. The Nevada test site is one of my favorite things to find on google earth. Show people the cratered moonscape of the underground tests and let them know we did this to ourselves. Every hole that "went atmospheric" has a body count we just don't know exactly what it is.

[–]mikeynerd 1 point2 points ago

This makes me wonder if the Big Bang looked similarly...

[–]pizearke -2 points-1 points ago

The big bang happened over the course of many, many years.

[–]HotDamn18V 0 points1 point ago

This is what a metroid looks like.

[–]xNateDawg 0 points1 point ago

So how big is it at this point? Are those towers in the background?

[–]ShadowofDeathnote 0 points1 point ago

it looks like a metroid

[–]drlullabye -1 points0 points ago

It looks like a metroid
