hoowww??

[–]morrison0880 65 points66 points ago

That's how lightning works.

[–]z57 28 points29 points ago

this is how science!!

[–]listn2moremetal 3 points4 points ago

Physics.

[–]listn2moremetal 2 points3 points ago

To answer it a bit directly (I'm no expert, so I'm going to be as basic as I can), essentially the lightning's electrons move toward the ground. Once it approaches grounding, the charge from the earth essentially jumps up the stream of electrons left behind in the wake of the lightning strike.

[–]JewBoySandler 1 point2 points ago

[–]RowdyMcCoy 3 points4 points ago

Wow... and to think how fast that was in real time.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULIGHTNING!

[–]warr2015 1 point2 points ago

Sorry to hijack, but I was there! It's from the railroad bridge on the hudson called "Walkway over the Hudson". I was there when he took the picture!! Oh my god I'm freaking out about this I'm sorry :) I knew I had the best view in the world this year

[–]flissss 121 points122 points ago

Poughkeepsie?

[–]TTcosmicCR 38 points39 points ago

Yes, taken from the walkway over the Hudson.

[–]numonestun 6 points7 points ago

ARG. You know... I'm looking at that bridge... knowing that I know it. Gave up after 30 seconds. Its only the MHB, which I spend 4 years rowing under in high school. Fail. (amazing shot, btw)

[–]happyhappyjoejoe 1 point2 points ago

I spent two years rowing under it!

[–]atomichumbucker 8 points9 points ago

I was in a boat just off shore of peekskill, the lightning was isolated to a single large cloud, the rest of the sky perfectly clear. The combination of fireworks and lightning was amazing. Im glad you got this shot, it really is great.

[–]Greyscale88 14 points15 points ago

I'm from Poughkeepsie and I saw this on my friend's Facebook. WHO TOOK THIS?

[–]enjoytheshow 20 points21 points ago

Googling "little fish photography" might be a good start. Just a guess.

[–]Veryfancydoily 4 points5 points ago

after some research I think little fish photography is a lady in upstate NY, so I am assuming she took it, I'm also in Poughkeepsie.

[–]The_Govenment 1 point2 points ago

Im from close by and that sounds about right, I wish I had gone to the walkway, I defiantly will next year

[–]MegainPhoto 1 point2 points ago

I defiantly will next year

It's the only way to go.

[–]jhunt04 1 point2 points ago

Walkway over the Hudson credits 'Mike Pescetti' on their Facebook post of this.

[–]Mcfggy 7 points8 points ago

I saw this from Newburgh, in a parking lot at Mount Saint Mary's. The show was absolutely insane (once it stopped raining), it was like god decided to amp up the fireworks himself.

[–]flume 13 points14 points ago

Woo Hudson Valley!

[–]mrshankly01 1 point2 points ago

upvotes for the hudson valleyians.

[–]The_Govenment 1 point2 points ago

Yeah!

[–]desheik 5 points6 points ago

I saw from Staatsburg that you guys were having both fireworks AND lightning. So that makes sense.

[–]The_Govenment 1 point2 points ago

Kingston was too

[–]cuteintern 2 points3 points ago

I thought that bridge looked familiar.

[–]nycska 1 point2 points ago

Indeed. My great great grandfather had a rather large hand in building that bridge!

Correction, he helped build the bridge the picture was taken from...

[–]Takaian 1 point2 points ago

I can almost see my college from there, lol. The lower right corner is riiiight on the edge of campus I believe

[–]krsvbg 332 points333 points ago

The exposure and vibrancy look alright, but that watermark... man, work on that.

Stupid font. Silly brand name.

Nice shot though, kudos to you. Needs some work, but the basics are pretty good.

[–]Khuskan 140 points141 points ago

What is it with amateur photographers, no matter how skilled they are, and inability to choose a nice looking watermark instead of some ugly font?

[–]shotdead7 47 points48 points ago

amateurs starting out look at other's watermarks and say "oh that must be what i need to look professional" and slap it on all their images to try and look more official.

[–]Khuskan 52 points53 points ago

It still doesn't make much sense. They've got the artists' eye to pick out such beautiful shots, but when it comes to fonts and simple logos they fall flat on their faces.

I appreciate they might not have the ability to do the graphics design part, but surely they recognize when something is ugly and detracting to the image?

[–]japanthony 33 points34 points ago

You'd be surprised that the more you work on a single image the more blind you become to seeing it's faults.

[–]dankhimself 1 point2 points ago

That's true. I've scrapped some of my shots because they look amazing until I totally lose direction with it. Even starting over stops working after awhile.

I'm just an amateur, but I spent tons of money on gear, so what makes or breaks my images comes down to whether or not I can process it correctly. I've spent tons of time practicing, but I still need a lot more time studying. Photoshop is overwhelming with all of those layers and settings.

[–]PublicAccessNYC 4 points5 points ago

Trust me, as someone who started out illustrating, then learned graphic design, and now photography, talent in one does not overlap onto another as much as it seems it should.

[–]DominoTree 39 points40 points ago

Seriously. That is goddamn terrible.

[–]gman243 5 points6 points ago

Yea but it's doing its job. I mean, who wants to claim ownership of a photo with such a shitty watermark?

"Hey bro, I took this awesome picture." "Sweet bro, but that shit down in the right looks gay." "Oh you're right bro, now that I think about it I didn't take this picture."

Watermark accomplished.

[–]daskrip 5 points6 points ago

At least that watermark is in the water, where it should be!

[–]JustinTime112 15 points16 points ago

Not to mention the size and opacity of the watermark. If your water mark is taking up nearly half the width of the picture, and it is so opaque that you notice it right away, you are doing it wrong.

[–]miranimous 2 points3 points ago

This was the very first thing I noticed upon opening this photo.

[–]Circ-Le-Jerk 53 points54 points ago

I want a print, where can I get one and can you ship to EU?

[–][deleted] 58 points59 points ago

And would you print it without that awful watermark?

[–]VGChampion 124 points125 points ago

You do realize people watermark previews, not prints right?

[–]yes_they_do_do_that 69 points70 points ago

I did realize that.

[–]Pyro627 44 points45 points ago

You aren't the guy he asked, though.

[–]yes_they_do_do_that 101 points102 points ago

Yes, I did realize that.

[–]MeoMix 1 point2 points ago

You are a badass, though.

[–]Triette 1 point2 points ago

[–]yes_they_do_do_that 2 points3 points ago

yes they do.

[–]Triette 1 point2 points ago

Yes, they.

[–]SilenceIsGolder 1 point2 points ago

Yes,

[–]Snaperture 53 points54 points ago

I wonder why Little Fish Photography would put a watermark on their photo. It's not as if Little Fish Photography could gain any recognition or exposure for their company by placing "Little Fish Photography" at the bottom of their photo. It's not like someone is going to see "Little Fish Photography" as the watermark and think "I should go see if Little Fish Photography has any more photos I might like". I highly doubt anyone would ever see this photo and go looking for Little Fish Photography's Facebook page. On July 6th at 12:37 EST only 9,000 people had voted on this photograph from Little Fish Photography, probably only 15,000 or so people saw it. Why would anyone put a watermark on their photo? It's beyond me.

This message was brought to you by Patrick Duffy Photography

[–]DeviousMrBlonde 5 points6 points ago

I don't think the point was that there is a watermark at all, but that it's bloody horrible in and of its own right. At least the logo on her site is non-offensive. It's obviously a fantastic photo and Little Fish deserves all the extra traffic they get because of it. It's one of those things where you see something so lovely with this little detail at the other end of the scale that almost ruins the whole thing. Almost.

[–]Snaperture 9 points10 points ago

No.. There is a snobbery in the biz about watermarks in general, of any kind. It's usually other photographers bitching about them. Usually photographers that never drive any business because they are so concerned with "the purity of the art" and have no idea how to promote or run a business. It doesn't matter how classy, small or opaque you make a watermark, people will bitch about it. It's not like it's a TMZ watermark that covers the entire photo. It's serving its purpose and doesn't interfere with the photo. That's all it's supposed to really do.

[–]dblan9 1 point2 points ago

I like your photography.

[–]purenitrogen 1 point2 points ago

Clicked the link, pictures of children and babies everywhere. No badass lightning fireworks.

[–]gameyharp 1 point2 points ago

The first thing I noticed.

[–]PhinixPhire 1 point2 points ago

That has to be an intentional crop. Cute, I must say. =D

[–]lurked 4 points5 points ago

I knew I couldn't be alone noticing this.

It makes the shot even better.

[–]turbodreamer08 13 points14 points ago

Poughkeepsie??? MHB?

[–]hobble420 72 points73 points ago

Where is the reflection on the water?

[–]funkyshit 221 points222 points ago

The reason why the reflection does not appear in the water comes from the long exposure. While the direct light from fireworks and the lightening gets captured from the camera sensor, the blurry reflection on the water gets cancelled by the long exposure.

Actually, I have no idea what I'm talking about.

[–]beacon_ 62 points63 points ago

You are correct.

[–]jinklmun 28 points29 points ago

Since its long exposure, i call bullshit on the "perfect timing" thing.

[–]Anus_Blender 33 points34 points ago

Lightning photography is always long exposure. I'm not sure why people think it requires perfect timing.

[–]PDAisAok 1 point2 points ago

Not always. Unless you are using some serious ND filters during mid day storms you need to use triggers like this.

http://nerotrigger.com/

[–]fullautophx 21 points22 points ago

By "long exposure", it appears that it was around 1/2 to 1 second. Any longer and the firework burst would be a blurry mess. So, pretty good timing?

[–]jinklmun 1 point2 points ago

Fair enough, i'll agree to that. Your logic is undeniable.

[–]jaqq 1 point2 points ago

Exposure time is probably <1 sec here. Still a pretty lucky shot.

[–]acidvolt 1 point2 points ago

That's exactly what I was thinking...I was looking for this comment

[–]shelldog 19 points20 points ago

It's a vampire lightning bolt.

[–]Zeomax 6 points7 points ago

The file doesn't have EXIF. Care to share the F stop, shutter speed and ISO?

[–]littlefish90[S] 12 points13 points ago

Shutter speed was about 3 seconds on a tripod, the f-stop was at 7.1 and the ISO was set low to 100

[–]brohani 3 points4 points ago

I was wondering the same thing. Also, what camera and lens did you use? Any post processing? Would love to learn how to take pics like this one. Thanks for sharing!

[–]Barbarus623 24 points25 points ago

I posted something like this yesterday... Nobody liked it.

[–]my2penniesworth 4 points5 points ago

ok, here's my pity upvote for you and your picture ;)

[–]Sniper_Extreme 2 points3 points ago

I liked it!

[–]littlefish90[S] 53 points54 points ago

Thanks for the great response everyone. If people are interested in prints send me a private message and I'll see what I can do.

[–]ineffable_internut 35 points36 points ago

You might as well just quit photography here while you're ahead. It doesn't get much better than this.

[–]rsplatpc 5 points6 points ago

If you want to nit pick he cut off the top of the firework burst, do it again next year! :-P

[–]OneCello 4 points5 points ago

What kind of camera/lens did you use?

[–]KallistiEngel 6 points7 points ago

I'm more curious about his settings myself, but that would also be nice info to have.

[–]Fmeson 1 point2 points ago

Long exposure, possibly bulb. White balance so that everything is red. Use the largest aperture that preserves sharpness across the frame. Certainly shot on a point and shoot and not a dslr.

It really doesn't get more complicated than that. In blub mode you just wait for both a lighting strike and a firework to go off before closing the shutter.

[–]stopit 35 points36 points ago

wasn't an iphone or he would have told you.

[–]KimJongIlSunglasses 5 points6 points ago

I'm a vegetarian.

[–]KRamJellytube 1 point2 points ago

is that george washington bridge looking north?

[–]littlefish90[S] 12 points13 points ago

nope its the mid-hudson bridge. Photo taken from the walkway over the hudson looking south

[–]SuperToker 2 points3 points ago

WooHoo repping the Hudson Valley on the front page. My parents saw the fireworks from the walkway bridge as well and they Loved it! Fantastic photo; it will look great hanging somewhere.

[–]DominicDom 1 point2 points ago

You should read post this over to /r/exposureporn they love this type of stuff

[–]Gengar1221 1 point2 points ago

Hey littlefish - do you have a website or something I could buy the prints from? You have only been a redditor for two hours and would prefer to go through something a little more official.

[–]TayRay420 4 points5 points ago

There was a lightning storm during the South Africa's show at the 2009 Celebration of Light in Vancouver. Seen here and here

[–]CountChugula 14 points15 points ago

Not bad but where is the shark jumping out of the water to eat the guy dangling from the helicopter?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Anyone else notice the grumpy old man's face on the right of the lightning?

[–]dcwj 18 points19 points ago

I love that there's the same colour scheme throughout the picture as well.

[–]goldenboyphoto 20 points21 points ago

Hate to be snarky, but that's called lack of white balance.

[–]lahwran_ 7 points8 points ago

or it's colorized on purpose.

[–]mojorisin2592 56 points57 points ago

Hate to be snarky, but I don't give a fuck.

[–]KanyeBakingCookies 7 points8 points ago

Badass photo, but that watermark is terrible. That font... Eugh.

[–]vipre 36 points37 points ago

the watermark ruins the picture

[–]BrendanJB 49 points50 points ago

As an amateur photographer who has had images stolen, it is a pretty crappy watermark. Not terrible, but it's obnoxious, poorly styled, and detracts from the image. Not only that, it's completely unnecessary. If a person likes your image and wants to see more of your stuff, your name or your website in small font in the corner is more than enough.

Watermarks do nothing to prevent someone from stealing your image if they really want it, unless you cover the entire image with one; and even then it's still possible with enough work. You want to know how well cornered-watermarks prevent image stealing? This well. I did that in 10 seconds in Photoshop; clone stamp, sample area, one brush stroke. That doesn't even take in to account that the thief could just crop the image above the watermark.

If someone wants to steal your image, they will. But a fan of your work will enjoy your stuff that much more when it is a clean, unmarked image, or with a classy little link at the bottom. If you want to sell your images, don't post high resolution versions of them on the internet. If you want to let fans know where they can find more of your stuff, a small, subdued link does far more than an ugly watermark.

As an example, here is a photo I took the other day. If you search, you can find my name, but it doesn't scream at the viewer, "HEY LOOK I TOOK THIS PHOTO! ME!".

[–]heroinhero 7 points8 points ago

Yeah, those people weren't even going to pay for your photos either. At least when they steal it, it increases your exposure as a photographer somewhat. Especially if your work gets stolen often.

[–]skyrider55 7 points8 points ago

"I did that in 10 seconds in Photoshop; clone stamp, sample area, one brush stroke."

I just press the delete button and photoshop automagically fills in the area to perfection.

[–]ziatonic 1 point2 points ago

Exactly my sentiment for years.

[–]I_like_boxes 1 point2 points ago

It's not even a successful watermark. I was trying to find a version that still had the EXIF data intact, so I was looking for their website or blog. There are a lot of Little Fish Photography businesses. I had to do a reverse image search to find the original posting on Facebook. Sadly, it didn't have what I was looking for :(

I agree on the small watermarks though. I usually avoid putting mine right on edges or corners (but do sometimes), but I'm pretty good at putting it somewhere that won't bother viewers at all. Clone stamp would easily remove them, but crop tool won't usually. Cloning takes a little longer, so I'm counting on people's laziness.

[–]eroverton 1 point2 points ago

I know nothing about photography but I think this sounds like really good advice. I just wanted to mention that you're replying to someone's reply, not the OP, so there's a good chance the OP will miss your comment in all of these responses. You should address this to him/her directly; I think s/he'd be glad of the advice! :)

[–]The_Blurst_Of_Times 1 point2 points ago

This guy fuckin' gets it. Gigantic watermarks have turned me off of countless pictures. A watermark like the OPs immediately paints the picture in a bad light, so thank you for taking what you do seriously.

It's not about becoming an internet photography celebrity, it's about sharing your pictures.

[–]organised 1 point2 points ago

Came here to say this, what a shame. :/

[–]elfishwebbly 11 points12 points ago

You should post this in /r/PerfectTiming

[–]Viteunic 4 points5 points ago

i dont think this is a "shot of a lifetime" and if so, not many more shots will be had.

[–]Miceli123 1 point2 points ago

OP: what was your shutter speed? My shots of fireworks always blur

[–]littlefish90[S] 7 points8 points ago

Shutter speed was about 3 seconds on a tripod, the f-stop was at 7.1 and the ISO was set low to 100

[–]oellawappa 2 points3 points ago

Awesome photo, crappy font T.T

[–]SilverPhox 4 points5 points ago

Where is this? Love the shot

[–]justdweezil 17 points18 points ago

Not gonna lie: horrific watermark ruined the picture.

[–]LobsterTaco 25 points26 points ago

Shot of a lifetime.

Ruined by huge awful watermark.

[–]Mugros 13 points14 points ago

Red color cast and ugly watermark.

[–]mixolydian02 5 points6 points ago

Awesome shot, reminded me of this gem

Fireworks, Lightning, and shooting star:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/leighton9999/fireworkslightning-1.jpg

[–]rustyrobocop 2 points3 points ago

Piece of cake, you should've tried the same in San Diego

[–]Jammku 2 points3 points ago

Great way to ruin the photo with your bullshit watermark, faggot.

[–]kristeom 2 points3 points ago

Mike Pescetti took the photo. Go like his page http://www.facebook.com/LittleFishPhoto

[–]Oddidea 2 points3 points ago

I don't get it.. This has been over-processed and so much detail has been lost. That watermark is wretched as well. Work on your post processing and you'd have a result that's better than people saying "ooh, pretty lights".

[–]pestilence46879 11 points12 points ago

Looks like the mid-Hudson bridge. That shit was awesome. Fireworks on one side, lighting on the other.

Also, this looks photoshopped. There are no mountains that run parallel to the bridge. I can't see the outline of the walkway either which should be clearly visible since those fireworks were bright as shit. The lightning storm was also well east of the river by the time the show started as well. This picture was taken looking north too I presume.

Edit: here's a couple daytime shots from the walkway looking south. http://i.imgur.com/0Wlsq.jpg http://i.imgur.com/qmCho.jpg

Edit 2: I really gotta stop looking at shit on my phone before I open my mouth. Now I can tell exactly where you were standing.

[–]f1nnbar 8 points9 points ago

No. Looks like it's taken FROM the Walkway, looking south toward the bend in the river where the mountains are on the west side.

[–]thingamabobs 2 points3 points ago

You are correct.

The lighting looks like it's coming out of Zeus' eyeball!

Soon there will be a forest fire and then the debate, was it the fireworks or the lightening...

[–]betherelol 1 point2 points ago

This would be perfect for, well uh.../r/PerfectTiming

[–]FatNerdGuy 1 point2 points ago

Think that watermark is intrusive enough?

[–]Cognus911 1 point2 points ago

shhhooooopppppeeeeeddd?......

[–]inFeathers 1 point2 points ago

Comic sans...? Really...?

[–]nostrongfeelings 1 point2 points ago

And then they had to ruin it with the watermark.

[–]sitch123 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, this would be a good time to retire. Doesn't get much better than that.

[–]mrtobo 1 point2 points ago

Is that comic sans' older sister in that big watermark there?

[–]Amberleaf 1 point2 points ago

And another one!

Can I just say a few things as to why I think this is photoshopped:

  • no reflection (important)
  • op is very vague about camera settings (particularly the exposure time)
  • it just doesn't look right (perspective wise), firework burst should be much higher.
  • capturing a firework bust & lightning in 3 seconds? (possible but very unlikely)
  • where were the fireworks shot from? (the barge in the river?)
  • where is the smoke from the fireworks? (was this the first photo of the night - even luckier!)

All these question could be answered if the op would simply send the original RAW file to one of the admins (or me) for verification :-).

If I am wrong I apologise in advance.

thats the money shot!

[–]outstar 1 point2 points ago

shot of a lifetime ruined by watermark...

[–]HIPPOisSKEPTICAL 1 point2 points ago

You could probably sell that for lots of moneys. There are people that spend their whole lives trying to get a decent picture of lightning. This one is amazing.

[–]jerthebear 1 point2 points ago

I'm guessing that this is not perfect timing but is, in fact, multiple images stacked together. It's certainly possible that this was accomplished in a few second exposure. Probably not though.

[–]ratfacechirpybird 1 point2 points ago

What, no lens flare?

[–]Jdruu 1 point2 points ago

Nice to see a local picture. Go Hudson Valley!

[–]rsingles 1 point2 points ago

I would like you to know, this picture causes me to buy the upgraded reddit pic app on my ipod immediately. I wanted it so badly as my wallpaper. This is the most beautiful picture I have ever seen. Thank you very much.

[–]netgamer7k 3 points4 points ago

Yay! A big fat, ugly watermark on it, so I can't have it as my desktop background!!! I love you, artist! (or photographer?)
