Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

'Spomenik' is not a name, it actually means monument.

How can a monument be abandoned?

I don't think that the word "abandoned" really applies in that context.

I was wondering that too, was someone living in these at some point? Also, the one in the thumbnail looks like a tie fighter

During the 1960s and 70s, the then Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito, commissioned several memorial sites and monuments called ‘Spomeniks’ dedicated to World War II battles, and concentration camp sites. Designed by different sculptors and architects, the strong and powerful blending of art and architecture come together in these monuments to convey the sense of confidence and strength of the Socialist Republic. However, after the dissolution of the Republic in 1992, they lost their symbolism and importance and no longer attracted the millions of visitors a year it once did.

Today there are hundreds of them scattered throughout villages and rural landscapes in the former Yugoslavia. Once the site of pilgrimages by schoolchildren, military veterans, patriots, and mourners who had lost family in WWII, these monuments are today rarely visited.

These pictures are taken by Antwerp-based photographer Jan Kempenaers who travelled the Balkans photographing these eerie objects.

Still visit them when I go especially when you have had families serve and be killed

i'm from here, and these really are great and monumental. it says abandonned because when yugoslavia bursted into crazy media propaganded civil war no newely formed nationalist state wanted to do anything with them as they represented the unity between our brotherly nations. many of them are devastated and parts are being sold as secondary raw materials, but recently there are some efforts to fix them and let them shine in full glory.

In Soviet Russia monument watches itself.

Very impressive stuff. Built (or commissioned) by a madman, but I'd like to see them in real life nonetheless.

[–]joost68 1 point2 points ago

You can call Tito dictator (which he was) but calling him a madman is simplistic. Are you from the former Yugoslavia?
