Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

In the first watercolor class I took, I learned how to do this and it blew my mind. So simple, and the effect is so beautiful.

So... how do you do it? In simple terms! That is really neat.

[–]dorky2 61 points62 points ago

You just paint the shape you want with clean water, wait for the paper to soak up the water, and touch the right places with the ink or the paint. It's a very simple concept, the only trick is that you have to practice doing the ink at just the right moment when the water has soaked into the paper so there's no pooling, but hasn't yet begun to evaporate so you still have clean edges.

Now I can't wait to see all of the shitty posts tomorrow of people trying this.

This one looks like you... with breasts."

Steve you are funny.

[–]BitOCrumpet 5 points6 points ago

Thanks for the explanation! Even knowing how, watching it happen is still magic.

[–]dorky2 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, and there's more going on in this one than just what I said. The artist has left some standing water on the birds' torsos and the beak on the left, to vary the texture and value, and has also masked off areas to keep them white. Obviously this is someone who's very skilled and experienced.

Fuck, typed a long reply and then lost it to a mis-click.

basically just a few additions, which i will summarize rather than re-type : the technique is called wet on wet, and though the basic functions are often taught to beginners, it is a type of 'directed chaos' and therefor controlled use is generally considered an advanced skill. exquisite works done with this method alone require so much practice that many people who haven't put in the time try to call it a gimmick - that of course is a weak argument insofar as medium does not define content - it only modulates it.

also, $50 says they're working on gessoed ceramic in vid, not paper. It flows better, has no problem with warping (the typical cause of pools), bleeds less, and holds up better to blotting (since you can only blot the surface, and the pigment is working as a deeper stain).

Thanks for sharing that! I actually have an art degree with watercolor as my main focus, but you know more about this technique than I do. I know there's more to it than what I said, but they did ask for a simplified version. The principle is simple, but you're right, something like this takes a lot of practice and skill, and it's not a 'trick' or 'gimmick.'

My mind is being blown by something so simple yet seemingly requires a bit of skill to do properly

Been subscribed there for a long time. I don't smoke weed, but that subreddit is still awesome.

[–]zeekar 0 points1 point ago

[–]jphive 10 points11 points ago

This is awesome...I think I'm going to have play around with this when I get home.

[–]misterwizzard 50 points51 points ago

That's what I say every time I take a piss at work.
