Look at it this way, do you tell stories about the 2011 fireworks? No. 2010? No. 2009? No. And so on. Will you tell people that you were at the 2012 SD fireworks show and enjoy the looks on envy on their faces years from now? Yes.

I'd rather have something remarkable to remember. Life needs punctuation.

EXCLAMATION PUNCTUATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was the first year in like 7 years that I decided to go to local fireworks instead of facing traffic at Coronado. Not sure if I missed out on something spectacular.

Damn straight! I hated watching the news with all the tourists being interviewed bitching: "I came all this way on vacation to see it and it was a waste. I hate san diego now. What a rip off" Shut up and go back to South Carolina.

First off, I would have loved to see it (I was in Santee with my girlfriend's family). When we were watching fireworks, all I could think about was "Nobody comes to watch this show, they come to watch the finale". I would have rather skipped the 17 minutes of one dumb explosion at a time and watched the sky catch fire for 30 seconds.

Second, IT IS FREE YOU WHINERS! This is a $250 thousand show, put on by OUR city for you to see for free.

I have to admit something. I hate summer for one reason; the tourists. They drive like crap, they jam pack the beaches and all the popular places, and then complain over this? Just go away and let us enjoy where we pay WAY to much to live.

I was all fuck yes this is awesome. Then my pyrotechnic boner went away when it stopped. Forever.

I'm out of town right now. I imagine the feeling of, "Oh my God, this is the best beginning of any show I've ever seen. WTF are they going to do to build up from here?" followed by..."Oh...I guess that was it then."

I think most of us who put no effort into the show think it's awesome. I've seen some pretty HD video of it and as fireworks displays go (I'm a vet and once you've seen a building destroyed by laser guided artillery some of the magic of "fireworks" tends to go away) it was fantastic.

That said... were I a family man and were I to go to the effort of dragging my ass out there and getting a spot early in the day and doing to whole family outing barbecue thing and all that and they capper on the day was that 9 second fireworks display... yeah I'd probably be a little pissed.

In short I understand both sides of it. But I think the people who are mad have a right to be. Their tax dollars do pay for the show... and it wasn't what they bargained for.

Free fireworks next year and we are allowed to put the money to other things. That's what the settled at.

Right, my girlfriend and I spent the day on Coronado. It was to end with a bang, watching fireworks over the bay. We were a little disappointed.

Thanks for seeing it both ways.

Ah I wish. It was during the Gulf War back in 1991. We were on the Iraqi Border and I and one of the guys on my track spotted a jeep leaving a border station as we approached it.

It was two pretty big buildings, one main border crossing building and one garage for maintenance of the military vehicles kept there. And there was an oil derrick pumping oil on the far right of the main building. Because why not... it's the Middle East?

We were just privates so we didn't know the "war plan" was us sneaking around to the side of the Republican Guard to cut their retreat and supply lines from Baghdad. All we did was report what we saw.

Next thing we know we're getting interviewed by a general. They sent a squad of standard infantry (I was T.O.W. Infantry) to investigate and they found nothing but tracks and wild dogs. So the general sent the Forward Observer track up, they marked the main building with their laser... it was dark by then and I was about 5 football fields away but the buildings were big so I could see them clearly.

Then a loud whistle. And then BOOM! Blew everything to matchsticks. Second biggest explosion I've ever seen.

It's one of those things that we will PROBABLY NEVER be able to see again. Just awesome

I was watching the fireworks in San Marcos, so I missed it. Honestly, I'm pretty bummed. The videos make it look so awesome!

[–]c1namber 1 point2 points ago

I do feel the same but only because I was in one of the high rises downtown. I'm sure the couple hundred thousand people that crammed the shore line didn't feel that way.

I was on Shelter Island and loved all 25 seconds of it. We walked about 1.5 miles from our family's house in Liberty Station to the grassy area near the Bali Hai. Would I walk three miles round trip to see less than a minute of that again next year? Absolutely!!

Left El Cajon and drove down to Seaport Village around 6pm. Paid $10 bucks for parking. Walked around seaport village and bought coffee ($15) and then cookies ($5). Walked over to the pier and sat and waited. Everyone was standing around me so I didn't have a clear view of the first volley. Stood up, started dicking with my phone to try to get a good picture. By the time I was ready to take a shot, the burst was gone. FML

[–]MnkyKing 2 points3 points ago

Got to a good spot pretty early for the show, had a camera and tripod ready to go to get good photos of fireworks, so nope. Pretty disappointed.

[–]SourCreamWater 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was rad, but I didn't go and set up a blanket and a cooler and chairs at 6 AM and sit there...which is funny anyway.

[–]original186 0 points1 point ago

So what happened? Was it planned to be so short?

[–]schitzngiglz 2 points3 points ago

That's what she said.

[–]schitzngiglz 0 points1 point ago

But no, to my knowledge it was some sort of accident haa

[–]sizko_89 0 points1 point ago

I was there and it was more like 5 seconds, most people only got to see the smoke cause there was no notice for it and it was early.

[–]scarletbanner 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone have a link to footage of it? It sounds far better than the fireworks slow closest to me (which was cancelled due to very high fire risk).
