"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb.

[–]CJ_Guns 9 points10 points ago

I actually finally watched the movie this scene is in, I found it...charming?

[–]HotRodLincoln 4 points5 points ago

There's one with a comically over-sized umbrella. I find that one even more...charming.

I think it was yellow, maybe the villain is also the mother.

[–]Pizzaguy276 0 points1 point ago

It was black! And Batman climbed to the top, and just said: "Well, there's nothing illegal about this!" IT WAS BLOCKING THE ROAD.

[–]HotRodLincoln 1 point2 points ago

[–]Pizzaguy276 0 points1 point ago

...Oops... Nice though...

[–]Darklugia 0 points1 point ago

This is my all- time favorite Batman movie. Batman uses fucking SHARK REPELLENT. He saves the UN. Awesome.

[–]iDadeMarshall 1 point2 points ago

I love these old batman shows. The penguins laugh was awesome

[–]j1x1 0 points1 point ago

This is actually from the movie. It's a masterpiece.

[–]Tin_Whiskers 4 points5 points ago

FTFY: "Some days you just can't get rid of a bob-omb." ;)

[–]ALLCAPSON 3 points4 points ago

I just said that to myself when I saw this, and wanted to comment this. Have an upvote for beating me to it.

[–]slightlyasleep 6 points7 points ago

NO CAPS?

[–]DroolingIguana 5 points6 points ago

He makes heavy use of the Shift key in order to type lowercase letters.

[–]ALLCAPSON 7 points8 points ago

I JUST SAID THAT TO MYSELF WHEN I SAW THIS, AND WANTED TO COMMENT THIS. HAVE AN UPVOTE FOR BEATING ME TO IT.

[–]Isaac_Shepard 1 point2 points ago

agreed

[–]Eat_a_Bullet 0 points1 point ago

I love this scene. Watching Batman run down a crowded street with a Looney Tunes-style bomb while people go apeshit is one of my fondest childhood memories.

[–]SWOLLEN_CUNT_RIPPER 27 points28 points ago

The most terrifying moment of my childhood.

[–]MTVButtpluggedInNY 6 points7 points ago

Sweaty palms just seeing that fucker.

[–]Shippoyasha 9 points10 points ago

Absolutely terrifying until you learn you can cheat the system by tossing around the key like a rugby ball.

[–]Christian627 23 points24 points ago

Fuck that guy. Traumatized my cousin and I when we were 4.

[–]silverwolf761 11 points12 points ago

The Sun in SMB3 did something similar back then, but honestly he's quite a pushover and much less imposing than the mask (who's name escapes me atm)

[–]DroolingIguana 19 points20 points ago

The sun can be defeated with a well-aimed Koopa shell. The mask has no such weakness. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear and it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead (or until you drop the key.)

[–]aprofondir 6 points7 points ago

Actually you can get him. If you let him chase you around somewhere you can find a freeze powerup, you pick up the freeze, while previously you have collected 4 cherries, and now, go pick up a 5th. Now, you get the star, and you can finally kill that son of a bitch.

[–]silverwolf761 1 point2 points ago

Exactly right. Back in the day though, it scared the shit out of us and we'd just avoid it (which isn't really very hard at all)

[–]nrxia 7 points8 points ago

The mask guy's name: Phanto. True story.

[–]silverwolf761 0 points1 point ago

yep, that's it. Couldn't remember it for the life of me.

[–]damnshoes 0 points1 point ago

This will be my new gaming name! :D

[–]aprofondir 1 point2 points ago

I think that FUCKING face is called Phanto or something

[–]najeezy64 2 points3 points ago

as if this was worse than the piano

[–]sathed 2 points3 points ago

Dunno why you're getting downvoted. The piano in Mario 64 scared the shit out of me. I still think Phanto wins though. Nothing gave me nightmares like Phanto did.

[–]Boolderdash 0 points1 point ago

Piano gets you with the jump scare, but Phanto has the sheer terror of being chased by something you know you can't fight.

Fuck you Amnesia, Mario bros 2 did it first.

[–]ScreamingAloudInside 15 points16 points ago

I'm outta the jar, I AM OUT OF THE JAR! LEAVE ME ALONE!! :(

[–]Arbybeay 1 point2 points ago

They follow you out of that hell hole?! I never escaped.

[–]cjhazza 36 points37 points ago

Man Mario 2 is weird compared to all the other games. It was very much a case of "I have no idea what I am doing"

[–]myhandsarebananas 30 points31 points ago

That's because in Japan, Mario 2 was basically just super hard mode of the first game. They thought that would be too hard and frustrating for other markets, so they took some other game and basically just swapped out the sprite to be Mario instead of whoever the main character was supposed to be.

[–]kmeisthax 121 points122 points ago

That game was called "Doki Doki Panic", and it's history is slightly more interesting than you mentioned.

After publishing SMB1, Miyamoto considered designing a game based around vertical scrolling as it's successor. Of course, it was developed as a much different game with different characters, becoming a game called "Doki Doki Panic". Meanwhile, a secondary team at Nintendo began work on a more direct sequel to SMB; this is the Japanese SMB2.

Nintendo of America saw the Japanese SMB2 and a number of people at the branch hated it for a few reasons. First, yes, it was bloody hard, compared to the first game's really polished difficulty curve. But it was also a mission pack disguised as a sequel. It's like going from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The most radical visual change in the game was an updated tileset - which, in my opinion, looked worse. It has that "early NES feel" where the artist draws metatiles without considering what they look like next to each other, which is amateurish.

Japanese SMB2 had some new features, mostly to hinder the player's progress. Poison mushrooms, long chasms that have to be navigated with gusts of wind, and a few other big difficulty spikes. But ultimately it looked and played the same as SMB1. I personally consider it an inferior sequel because of it's blatant unoriginality, and NoA agreed, so they took Doki Doki Panic, changed the sprites of the four hero characters to be Mario characters, and thus we got International SMB2.

The home branch of Nintendo was not made unaware of the switch. In fact, they released the modified international release in Japan as "Super Mario Bros 2 USA", which would indicate that Nintendo proper approved of the change. And Nintendo of America did wind up releasing the Japanese SMB2 - in the form of additional content for future SMB1 releases, in both All-Stars (Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels) and the GBC port (Super Mario Bros For Super Players).

Miyamoto himself has commented that his favorite Mario game is International SMB2 / Doki Doki Panic. And many enemies from Doki Doki Panic / International SMB2 have been inserted into the Mario canon of enemies - most notably, Shyguy, who reappears as early as Yoshi's Island (if not earlier).

SMB3 did not suffer from this problem, primarily because development was headed by Miyamoto, and thus it was a much superior sequel to Japanese SMB2, and NoA didn't feel the need to confuse us about their parent company's games. There's a bigger variety of enemies, the art is much more aesthetically cohesive, the level design is more varied and interesting, and all the other things you would expect from a sequel.

[–]reverendnathan 11 points12 points ago

Great write-up. I wonder if Mario cannon reflects too strongly on it's developers liking the concepts of older, higher acclaimed games too strongly. I really liked the level selection concept in Super Mario Galaxy, but in Galaxy 2 (and like every other game since) has reverted to a style closely resembling SMB3 (not even like SMW, but SMB3).

There were some pretty clever, original characters and design concepts from Super Mario Sunshine... haven't seen anything from Delfino Plaza in the Mario cannon again, save Smash Bros. The star system in Galaxy 1/2 is very reminiscent of 64, perhaps a little too so, where some critics call it too much of a 64 clone. And lets face it, New Super Mario Bros should really be called "We remake SMB3 and updated the graphics, it's not new but a return to the old".

Not that this is ruining anything. Galaxy 2 was phenomenal, I liked New Super Mario Bros. Certainly the whole franchise has fared better than Sonic did when it's 3D transition era wiped away (Heroes, as far as I can tell, come to a point about 60% through where the game cannot be completed further -- and the game up until that point was lackluster). But maybe the next Mario game could try something even just a bit different.

[–]jaredisawesome 2 points3 points ago

Sonic Generations is great. Maybe not as polished as Galaxy 2, but still a damn good game. I feel like 3D sonic finally has his feet on the ground. I expect the next game to be fantastic.

[–]pootiecakes 1 point2 points ago

I understand why so many are so hesitant to give Sonic another chance after the past several abominations that have come out...but if you can't enjoy Sonic Generations, something else must be wrong. That game is FANTASTIC.

[–]belflandluvr 0 points1 point ago

The next two main series Mario games are New Super Mario Bro. 2 and U, I believe.

[–]APeacefulWarrior 4 points5 points ago

It's worth mentioning that there was more changed than just the hero characters in the creation of the US SMB2. They went through and updated a lot of the graphics, mostly turning static tiles into animated ones, and also added new features like the powered-up jump. Also a couple bosses were added, IIRC.

It was more like Doki Doki v2.0, rather than just a small adjustment. In fact, if you go back and play DDP after playing SMB2 it pretty much feels like an unpolished beta.

[–]leetdood 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I remember seeing an article or something about that, the animations and stuff just were so much better in the end.

[–]Wazowski 3 points4 points ago

...they took Doki Doki Panic, changed the sprites of the four hero characters to be Mario characters, and thus we got International SMB2.

DDP was itself based on an early SMB2 prototype. Production had stalled because the vertical scrolling was difficult to implement, so they shelved it and made the "Lost Levels" game. The SMB2 prototype was repurposed to make DDP, then later re-repurposed for the US version of SMB2.

Everyone seems to think SMB2 is based on DDP. In reality it's the opposite. DDP is a bastardized Mario game, not the other way around.

[–]daRoach 1 point2 points ago

You hit the nail on the head.

The echo I always hear when someone brings up Doki Doki Panic is "ER MER GERD SUPER MARIO 2 IS SUCH A RIP OFF!!"

If they would take the time to research what really happened, they could understand that this is the real deal.

[–]Wazowski 2 points3 points ago

And many enemies from Doki Doki Panic / International SMB2 have been inserted into the Mario canon of enemies - most notably, Shyguy...

Bob-omb has done a lot more than Shyguy.

[–]HorseSteroids 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, although the basics of the game are the same, they did more work than just throwing Mario sprites into DDP. [link]

[–]Machin_Shin 6 points7 points ago

You can still play the Japanese version though, it is called "super mario brothers, the lost levels."

[–]thebigger 4 points5 points ago

Beating Lost Levels is, imo, the greatest "achievement" in gaming history. You need to beat the game 3 times through to get to the final secret level.

[–]OmegaVesko 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of Ghosts n Goblins.

Dear god that game was hard. The SNES sequel was also really good.

[–]Thick-McRunFast 1 point2 points ago

I wasted so many quarters on that game at the pizza place. I never made it past the second level.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Wait, what???

[–]thebigger 1 point2 points ago

http://www.ign.com/cheats/games/super-mario-bros-the-lost-levels-wii-963870

edit: sorry 8 times, not 3

The Lost Levels follows a similar style of level progression as its predecessor: eight Worlds, having four levels each. At the end of each world, Mario or Luigi navigates through a lava-filled castle, culminating in a battle against Bowser.[8] The first eight Worlds are numbered 1-8, while the remaining four—earned by completing the game eight consecutive times—are lettered A-D in the original Disk System version.[6] It is still possible to bypass parts of the game by exploiting warp zones, but unlike the previous game, two of The Lost Levels′s warp zones return the player to earlier levels.[7][14] Completing Worlds 1-8 without using a warp zone allows the player to access "Fantasy World" (also known as World 9), a repeating bonus stage that is similar to the "Minus World" glitch from Super Mario Bros.[10]

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Well the "Lost Levels" is hard, especially that wind level. That last Bowser's castle is damn near impossible... Still a much more entertaining game than Mario 2.

[–]BathofFire -1 points0 points ago

I wouldn't say super hard mode. I played Mario bros 2 a lot when it came out when I was 5 years old and it was just as hard as 1 (which is not hard) but a million times more fun.

[–]rawbertson 2 points3 points ago

Mario 2 is not Lost Levels.

[–]silverwolf761 3 points4 points ago

That's one reason I love it though. The game is such a welcome departure from the rest of the series and stands as it's own beast (yes, I'm aware it wasn't initially a mario game, but a mario game it became, and a mario game it shall remain).

I don't play it as much as I do SMB 3 or SMW, but I love the visuals and the music (although I kind of wish they had expanded on the dark world aspect. If they make a sequel and do that, it could be amazing)

[–]norealpurposehere2 1 point2 points ago

True but a LOT of mario conventions came from it. Shy Guys got their start there, among others.

[–]aprofondir 0 points1 point ago

Also, in the ''lost levels'' aka the original Mario 2, it was the first game where Mushrooms had eyes, a feature that stuck with the series to this day.

[–]jrmy004 8 points9 points ago

Comedy gold.

[–]big_dirt 7 points8 points ago

Holy shit, I remember this from the old YTMND days!

[–]herpty_derpty 2 points3 points ago

Is it weird that I get nostalgic over YTMND memes?

[–]pootiecakes 0 points1 point ago

I will cherish those days forever. A shame it has died.

[–]badgrafix 2 points3 points ago

Just started playing Spelunker today, this GIF properly depicts my experiences with that game. Just substitute key with a knocked out girl or a golden statue.

[–]mudpizza 1 point2 points ago

Fuck that face thing

[–]casact921 1 point2 points ago

No, this is what it feels like playing Mario 2.

[–]EtanSivad 1 point2 points ago

Love this gif.

Also, I made this video once just to mess around with greenscreen effects.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YANyi_zY-M Basically trying to capture what it was like to be a kid playing SMB2.

[–]laserfire 3 points4 points ago

It feels like you're Batman trying to get rid of a bomb while running through crowded city streets?

[–]nburghmatt 4 points5 points ago

yes

[–]inthatshirt 0 points1 point ago

Those mask motherfuckers. The bane of my existence.

[–]Mathlete86 0 points1 point ago

It's 2:30 am by me and here I am giggling like a schoolgirl at this .gif. Bravo.

[–]joshykins 0 points1 point ago

Oh man, I remember the first time I watched this episode, must have been back in the late 80's. I remember feeling such anxiety!

You forgot the ma-...there it is

[–]snags 0 points1 point ago

everytime i hear of mario 2. i'm reminded of how much effort i put in it only to find my saved game obliterated, thanks to my sister removing the cartridge improperly...resetting everthing. sigh...

[–]aprofondir 0 points1 point ago

[–]branran 0 points1 point ago

Half of the time you can just grab a monster and power jump to where you have to go... If you have Luigi that is.

[–]dookieface 0 points1 point ago

aw man mario 2. i don't think i've beat that

[–]baserunner107 0 points1 point ago

i used to be so scared of that shit when i was a kid but mario made my childhood

[–]ecimevoli 0 points1 point ago

There's a way to kill him, you need to start with 4 cherries and 4 vegetables, now go somewhere with a time stopper and cherry nearby, grab the time stopper, then grab the cherry, quickly get the star and murder the bitch!

[–]OneWhoSleepsWithCats 0 points1 point ago

My favorite batman movie by far. That was funny as shit.

[–]beerleader 0 points1 point ago

Can't believe it's the first time you see this picture. It's been on the internet for many years.

[–]Slashbackred 0 points1 point ago

This game was so different from the other ones but it was still a great game.

[–]Lukers_RCA 0 points1 point ago

WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN IT WAS ALL A DREAM. BULLSHIT ENDING

[–]kerred 0 points1 point ago

[–]vbl 0 points1 point ago

Man do I love Mario 2. It was downright magical for the time.

Wish I could upvote twice.

[–]unoriginal_name_42 -1 points0 points ago

If you drop the key, the weird face thing stops chasing you. You can just pick the key back up immediately, and he'll stay gone. It does kind of feel like cheating though.

[–]DroolingIguana 12 points13 points ago

He doesn't stay gone. He never stays gone.

[–]Thick-McRunFast 2 points3 points ago

He definitely comes back. It's not really cheating. .

[–]neonshadow 2 points3 points ago

Wrong

[–]stone500 1 point2 points ago

He comes back after you pick up the key again. However, if you wait a few seconds before picking up the key again, it takes him longer to get to you (up to a certain threshold, that is)

[–]Raneados -1 points0 points ago

Fucking possibly the oldest gif on the internet

I am disappointed in all of you.

[–]DrHarby -2 points-1 points ago

the cancer...it burns
