I love these shared cultural experiences. This is something I always noticed while watching Scooby Doo as a kid, but never considered that anyone else had. And now I find out there's this:

Scooby-Doo: Trap doors, curtains hiding monsters, vases that activated secret passages, paintings with moving eyes, it was everywhere. Quasi-subverted in the theme song, however, with an obviously-background-painted Scooby-Doo covered in bubblegum, which is cleared away by an animated tongue to reveal the lighter, animated Scooby.

I love the future.

Why are lighter objects animated where darker ones aren't? I kind of have an idea but don't know a god damn thing about classic animation.

Fairly sure the lighter ones are drawn and the darker ones are painted in some way. At Disney(not entirely sure) they made pre-painted backgrounds on one sheet and everything that had to be animated on another. This way they don't have to paint the background all over again for every frame.

I've always noticed this too, just never thought to share like OP. I still look for it today. That's why I like Hayao Miyazaki films, the conspicuously light patches are very hard to notice, because everything is drawn so well.

This has always been something I've treasured about Miyazaki films - the 'conspicuously light patch' is much damn harder to spot, if at all. Everything in his movies looks like it's about to move, and in many cases, it's going to. The only times this isn't true is in moments where the background is CRAZY detailed or painted, and in Ponyo, which compared to his other works seems rushed and cheap animation-wise.
