This is known as "gaslighting" and can be extremely entertaining (for either party) and/or extremely damaging to the person being gaslighted.

Something like this is probably not harmful unless the person has a prior medical condition (depression, etc), but doing it for more than a day could have serious side effects.

As much as I would love to be a target of this myself, I cannot endorse ever doing it to other people. The chance of damaging the person involved is just too high.

[–]alamb277 10 points11 points ago

what if the person freaks out and thinks he has to die to get out of the coma??

[–]Gen_McMuster 4 points5 points ago

than the experiment is a success. and you go to jail

[–]ErsatzCats 4 points5 points ago

Would it be advisable to let the target in on the prank a little while after it's over? I'm sure that would prevent any harmful side effects.

[–]Tommelot 10 points11 points ago

surely the past tense is gaslit, right?

[–]jarebear 9 points10 points ago

Lighted and lit are both acceptable past tenses of light, and here I'd guess lighted would be more appropriate since the term gaslighting comes from the play Gas Light.

[–]Graucsh -1 points0 points ago

Sometimes "lighted" is required. Observe:

/7 My bonnie leaned over the gas tank,

the height of its contents to see.

I lighted a match to assist her...

Oh bring back my bonnie to me /7

[–]CopperAlbatross 7 points8 points ago

Well the term comes from the movie "Gas Light" and my knowledge of correct tense grammar gets a little fuzzy when it comes to proper names, so I'm going to keep going with gaslighted. I really have no clue though.

I did wonder the exact thing as I was writing it down.

[–]I_CAPE_RUNTS 1 point2 points ago

On a related note, gas light was Angela lansbury's first movie, she was 18 and played a slutty maid

[–]AlisonCreates 1 point2 points ago

I agree with this. As someone who is slightly mentally unstable, this would set me off for a considerable amount of time.

[–]Renmauzuo 103 points104 points ago

Y'know what this pic totally needed? That superfluous motivational border.

[–]elderezlo 28 points29 points ago

You're waiting for a train...

[–]Waldere 19 points20 points ago

a train that will take you far away

[–]Heterokaryon 15 points16 points ago

You know where you hope this train will take you

[–]Waldere 10 points11 points ago

but you don't know for sure

[–]Spagneti 3 points4 points ago

BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER!!!

[–]Waldere 3 points4 points ago

Because you'll be together

[–]RUN_BKK 3 points4 points ago

BWOOOOOOOOM

[–]daschwa 2 points3 points ago

[–]JohnAbruzzi 71 points72 points ago

Why no more than three. Get the whole planet to do it and ruin somebodies life.

[–]a594109 45 points46 points ago

I agree, get like 50 friends, have this guy losing his mind by lunchtime

[–]JohnAbruzzi 135 points136 points ago

50 friends? Never mind.

[–]Adios_numero_two 1 point2 points ago

Best I can do is like.... carry the 5, square root it, add 5..... 1.

[–]broden 17 points18 points ago

If your 50 friends span many age class and race demographics, the better.

[–]SmurfRockRune 8 points9 points ago

No one on the internet has 50 friends...

[–]Moyer -1 points0 points ago

i have 95 friends on xbox live insert forever alone picture

[–]LynkDead 0 points1 point ago

Seems more likely it should have read a minimum of three.

[–]BritishMongrel 77 points78 points ago

just a tip if you really want to break them, rather than getting 3 friends get 3 random people/aquaintances: If you have 3 white college students doing it the believability of it being real is a lot lower than a bunch of people of varying ages and ethnicities.

Just imagine it: first a typical white male IT student does it, the victim is thinking "Hmm that was weird, must be a joke", a few hours later an old black guy waiting for the bus stop stops him and does it, now the victim's weirded out, finally while the victim's about to get home he passes a family walking a dog, a little girl suddenly runs away from the family tugs on the sleeve of the victim and says "wake up mommy/daddy" then runs off back to her family again... now the victim is an emotional wreck not only questioning reality but thinking they've got a family waiting for them

But in all seriousness don't do it.

[–]REXXT 33 points34 points ago

Please use your powers for good.

[–]BritishMongrel 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure how fucking with someones head to the point of a mental breakdown can be used for good but I'll consider it...

If only for the opportunity for creating the superhero "The Mindfucker"

[–]Wheres_Wally 0 points1 point ago

that's some supervillain shit right there.

[–]shouldgotafalcom 53 points54 points ago

3 friends? That many? This is reddit my good man

[–]donpapillon 34 points35 points ago

The use 3 very good disguises.

[–]Pelican_Fly 35 points36 points ago

The has always been good with disguises.

[–]mythcaptor 2 points3 points ago

You should introduce me to the sometime. He sounds like a cool guy.

[–]Rainfly_X 1 point2 points ago

Well yeah, the fights the aliens and doesn't afraid of anything.

[–]slashsigh 104 points105 points ago

This is a little dangerous if the person happens to have some sort of psychological disorder. They may very well try to "wake up" by either hurting/killing themselves and/or others around them. It sure is a funny idea though.

[–]Saerain 6 points7 points ago

Best to target people you know well, using people they don't, rather than targeting strangers with your friends.

[–]Ax3boy 42 points43 points ago

Don't be such a party-pooper.

[–]slashsigh 27 points28 points ago

Seriously, I know a guy who talked about the idea of "waking up" from this world because he believed it was all in his mind. It turned out that he was schizophrenic, and his "wake up" involved an attempted murder of his parents. Luckily he didn't succeed but he was still forced into temporary imprisonment, therapy and eventually medication for the rest of his life. You never know what some random stranger is like.

[–]LegoClaes 11 points12 points ago

In his defense, he was never disproved. Maybe killing his parents would have solved EVERYTHING.

[–]Colori 4 points5 points ago

"I know a guy" ...

[–]bjbyrne 2 points3 points ago

This one time at psycho-camp...

[–]yellowpride 1 point2 points ago

He's an expert in metal disorders. Mind if I...

[–]alu246 2 points3 points ago

Was laughing at the post. You killed it.

[–]RaccoNooB 6 points7 points ago

When you're done, all of the people who are into it, should probably walk up to the poor fella' and tell him it was a social experiment or something. If you tell him/her it's a joke they would probably get mad (if they were fooled by this). So by saying it's a social experiment and that they couldn't be aware of it they might(don't take my word for it) understand why you did what you did.

Or leave him/her alone and let the conspiracy thoughts grow...

[–]bananas16 0 points1 point ago

I can't imagine people would like being experimented on against without consent more than they'd appreciate a joke.

[–]RaccoNooB 0 points1 point ago

I guess experiment would be too much of a loaded word...

[–]theboymiles 15 points16 points ago

bit dangerous aint it?

[–]duvakiin -5 points-4 points ago

how?

[–]hokiepride 4 points5 points ago

Someone suffering from a mental disorder such as schizophrenia may be put over the edge and be driven toward self-harm or even suicide.

Edit: Thanks for the downvotes guys, it's not like my father had schizophrenia and was susceptible to something like this or anything.

[–]duvakiin -1 points0 points ago

oh i didn't think about that

[–]sadsafariman 20 points21 points ago

my friends and i did this in the Dallas airport. the man had no initial reaction, the second person made him look surprised, the third time he started freaking out. this made our 7 hour layover so much better

[–]deathdonut 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, there's no telling what actually contributed to his breakdown considering this was DFW.

[–]naffarama 4 points5 points ago

Maybe best for a friend of a friend of a friend to be a target so you can sort of know they won't go on a spree of some kind.

It needs to be subtle though, first person should be rude, just say "wake up" after (literally) bumping into them. Next person should hint, "You need to wake up" and eventually someone should do the whole coma line at the end of the day.

[–]Tubatu 2 points3 points ago

Tried it. My friend who did it with me almost got in a fight over it (he was the third one.)

[–]thetardis_isonfire 1 point2 points ago

For once I saw something on facebook before seeing it on reddit...

[–]LoriStrode 1 point2 points ago

This probably cause me to have a panic attack after awhile.

[–]Ifunctiononkitkats 1 point2 points ago

For a few months, my roommate would imply I was in a coma every so often, but casually dropping hints in conversation, or as I was falling asleep. Evil genius.

[–]Bradp13 1 point2 points ago

My friends and I actually did this to a friend of mine over the course of a few days. We would subtly say weird shit in the middle of convos "You're sleeping Shawn", "Wake up Shawn". He got so fucked up, it was hilarious.

[–]ItsDanimal 2 points3 points ago

And what happens when the person wakes up and we cease to exist because they reality we live in was created by their subconscious?

[–]magic_city_man 0 points1 point ago

But you're dreaming too.

[–]argh_minecraft 3 points4 points ago

Someone needs to film this challenge. I would really enjoy watching this.

[–]SquidManHero 2 points3 points ago

It's a repost, but I still like it. Upvote.

[–]DjManEX[S] 18 points19 points ago

If I had known it was a repost I wouldn't have posted it. Sorry.

[–]SleepyAstronaut 19 points20 points ago

Don't worry about it, the votes take care of it

[–]electrocuted 2 points3 points ago

Pretty sure i saw it on the front page earlier today. Maybe i'm losing it.

[–]Rainfly_X 2 points3 points ago

Or maybe you just need to wake up get some more rest tonight. You're looking tired.

[–]hokiepride 0 points1 point ago

This may or may not be real.

[–]greenaru 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't do this myself but I'd really like to read about more people who've done it!

[–]smokecat20 0 points1 point ago

I usually would reply "Shhhh... I know...they're watching..."

[–]CapnCrayg 0 points1 point ago

If your goal is to piss people off, you will succeed.

[–]thevideoclown 0 points1 point ago

Until he punches you to see if anyone reacts

[–]Thechariot7 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one who wouldn't be freaked out?? 90% of what strangers say to me confuses me anyway and I give it no second thought

[–]Tony_fe 0 points1 point ago

Giving someone an existential crisis seems more than a little rude...

[–]Ifunctiononkitkats 0 points1 point ago

This should be done by the cruelest flash mob ever.

[–]johntiger1 0 points1 point ago

We should do this to someone, but get everyone they know to get in on it. Later, if they start asking outside their personal circle of friends and family, we should get the entire world to do it. If everyone does it, does it become true?

[–]markman71122 0 points1 point ago

Can someone please do this and record it, please.

[–]occupied_throne 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like this involves an entire day of stalking a random person...

[–]Rosenthal 0 points1 point ago

TIL about gasslighting, could it be considered assault without a deadly weapon?

[–]Roboyo 0 points1 point ago

Challenge accepted. Will get pics for you all.

[–]KWiP1123 0 points1 point ago

This gave me chills. I find matters of perceived reality vs "actual" reality really intriguing, in college/high school, I found myself right a lot of short stories on the matter.
