Jeez, where do you live? It's hard to find a real christian where I live (Netherlands)

[–]notxjack 4 points5 points ago

[–]Zamb97[S] 3 points4 points ago

actually it's canada, but i've been going to a christian school for the past 4 years so i kind of forget that other atheists actually existed up here, being the only atheist in the whole school.

[–]Jean-Emile 2 points3 points ago

I live in northern New Brunswick, quite possibly one of the most bigoted places in Canada. I was delighted to find an awesome girl who I could have intelligent discussions with (rational discussions are usually lost amongst a sea of gossip around here). We have now been going out for a year, and I am currently saving my money to buy her an engagement ring.

[–]Zolken35 1 point2 points ago

It's bad up in northen N.B? It's lovely down in the south of N.B.

Saint John says hi.

[–]Jean-Emile 0 points1 point ago

I'm from Bathurst, yup, the town that flew the Anglo-Society flag in their town hall. I've met people who were ready to kill someone for being gay and where you're language can get you beat to death. On a more positive note, I love southern N.B! I've lived in Fredericton for a while and the people there were way more interesting and tolerant.

[–]Zolken35 0 points1 point ago

Oh I love it down here! I remember hearing about that!

[–]wojtek858 1 point2 points ago

Congratulations!

[–]Jean-Emile 0 points1 point ago

Thank you! :)

[–]mrlanious 1 point2 points ago

Aren't threesome in the closet? So ... are you basically hiding your non-belief?

[–]reidhasguitar 1 point2 points ago

It's funny how my Dutch maths teacher keeps talking about how everyone in the Netherlands "accepts Jesus into their hearts". Maybe now I know the real reason he left.

[–]mrlanious 1 point2 points ago

Bullocks. Or he's from the Dutch Bible Belt, Staphorst or something. Wherever he's from, it's secularising at a very rapid rate.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, America is jacked up. You are lucky to live in the Netherlands, you all have things figured out! Same with Norway.

If you only knew how truly fucked up our country is...it would blow your mind.

[–]mrlanious 2 points3 points ago

Oh but don't make a too romantic picture of the Netherlands, haha. Norway is quite a bit ahead but hey, it's got loads of oil.

In fact I realise very well how fucked up the US is. It's so sad to see such a great country fall prey to a bunch of greedy bullies. I have to admit I'm far more scared of the US than I am of Iran as it comes to the state of the world. The US is has so quickly become so corrupt it's almost hard to believe. Hang in there!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Spoken like a true American.

[–]mrlanious 0 points1 point ago

Haha, I lived in Greensboro, North Carolina for a year as an exchange student about 17 years ago. I'm a little bit American I guess. I even was in the ROTC, following the advice of my host brother. Hey, I was a 15-year old boy ;-)

[–]Robolenin 13 points14 points ago

I have a crush on Carl Sagan

[–]Crab_Allen 31 points32 points ago

Living in America sounds bizarre.

[–]TheNerdbiscuit 24 points25 points ago

Churches. Churches everywhere.

[–]Enlightenment777 6 points7 points ago

All Hail Zeus !!!

[–]ergocogitosum 8 points9 points ago

This is sad.

[–]RitaM21 0 points1 point ago

very sad :(

[–]Ron_McNeil_DeSagan 50 points51 points ago

Now you both can circlejerk together and never find out how sex works.

Congrats.

[–]Troll_Analyzer 5 points6 points ago

Oy, this is my favorite type of troll - the grey knight!

Now, I'm sure you've heard on other specials about white knights rushing to the defense of the bullied, but the grey knight loves to participate in parody rather than the immediate defense. But this grey knight is an awesome specimen, because even though Ron_McNeil_DeSagan is technically a troll, 'e's a funny troll. That means that the post gets upvotes - and attention!

You can tell that it's a troll post because there's no invitation to dialogue. Indeed, emphasis on the two of them not knowing how sex works, reference to circlejerking, and the obviously sarcastic congrats, are all telltale signs of an attempt at eliciting an emotional response from the OP and others. The intended effect, I believe, is a sense of violation at being so belittled for a comment. So our troll is a very strong baiter; we're lucky to have folks like Zamb97 around, who laugh at the joke rather than falling prey to an attempt at self-justification.

I'd say that while we could bag Ron_McNeil_DeSagan and really bring a nice specimen to Melbourne, we're better off leaving him in the natural environment. Remember, kids, not all trolls need to be bagged; some play a key role in the natural regulation of the environment.

[–]Ron_McNeil_DeSagan 6 points7 points ago

I'm the love child of Ron Paul, DeGrasse Tyson and Carl Sagan.

[–]Troll_Analyzer 1 point2 points ago

This one's actually sort of friendly!

I'm not willing to pronounce this fella totally approachable, though. Beneath that nice verneer are some mean claws. You expose an opening, and yer done for!

Now, Ron_McNeil DeSagan has identified itself to those too slow to catch on the obvious reddit circlejerkery. It's a natural defense to try to justify the actions being taken on here. Now, obviously, nobody CAN be the real lovechild of them, so it's like a child identifying his or her haloween costume. So watch out, don't get caught up in discussion over this - it's a veneer of conversation designed to try to get us caught up in something. Or, perhaps worse, it's an attempt to end the conversation on such a pointless angle, in order to make us look like we misidentified it. But don't be mistaken.

I'm gonna put my thumb up its backside to see if it's had a healthy diet. That'll tell us if the ecosystem is functioning as it should. Ever since reddit traffic went up, a lot of trolls have been eating junk food, and it's thrown the ecosystem into turmoil. That's why conservationists are more important now than ever.

[–]Ron_McNeil_DeSagan 2 points3 points ago

My diet consists of FreedomTM Fries, LibertyTM Waffles, and unregulated milk. :)

[–]Troll_Analyzer 2 points3 points ago

Okay, I'll break character for you. I like you.

[–]Ron_McNeil_DeSagan 1 point2 points ago

You should like Freedom, that's what Ron McNeil DeSagan Grasse-Paul is all about!

Have some LibertyTM Dollars, not that Fiat McFunnyMoney

[–]DuckTruck 0 points1 point ago

Oh my, how deep does this troll go? I'm looking down the rabbit hole.

[–]Modokon 0 points1 point ago

Not Blue Waffles?

[–]Ron_McNeil_DeSagan 1 point2 points ago

Only if the Free MarketTM offers them.

[–]Modokon 0 points1 point ago

Maybe you missed that... Google Blue Waffle disease, but please make sure you are not eating...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Three of my favorite people! I like you.

[–]Zamb97[S] 8 points9 points ago

you made me laugh, have an upvote

[–]Ehsaun 1 point2 points ago

Fuck you

[–]Ron_McNeil_DeSagan 0 points1 point ago

You have my blessings of LibertyTM and ConstitutionalityTM

[–]blattkube 9 points10 points ago

Gosh i'm glad that i live in germany. No one assumes that their date could be not an atheist. "You believe in what? Oh and you think you don't need to drink alcohol to have fun? Well, bye bye"

[–]BagOCrisps 2 points3 points ago

It's really not as prevalent here as it seems on reddit. Most people who claim a religion drink, screw, and party.

If you go to a church here, the crowd is generally older. Visit America some time and judge for yourself :)

Edit: Urban areas are probably better than rural of course

Similar story, except I thought she was one of the most religious people I knew for the past 3-4 years. Turns out she was faking it because she thought I was religious too

[–]perfect_exceeder 2 points3 points ago

Since I'm living in godless commie China, all my crushes are atheists.

[–]Mattycore 1 point2 points ago

I envy you

[–]supermonkey1313 7 points8 points ago

Pretty sure mine is too. Science is his favourite subject, he's a vegetarian (I've noticed more atheists than religious people are vegetarians), and I sort of seem to have an instinctive repulsion from religious people anyway.

[–]Zamb97[S] 14 points15 points ago

It's not that I wouldn't go out with a religious person, it's just that it's a lot nicer to not have to tiptoe around certain subjects, least ye accedentially spark a religious debate

[–]LeetroyJnkns 16 points17 points ago

You have excellent A-dar.

[–]supermonkey1313 8 points9 points ago

Yeah, and you know what's weird? I don't filter my friends by religion or anything, but everyone I've been friends with since maybe fourth grade has been atheist/agnostic.

[–]abenton 1 point2 points ago

Hmm it's too bad there isn't a way to communicate with him and ask him what his thoughts on the subject are? You'd have to be in a relationship or speak for that to happen!

[–]supermonkey1313 0 points1 point ago

-_-

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]supermonkey1313 0 points1 point ago

Ummm... okay, that's good to know.

[–]mrchowwow 0 points1 point ago

You have a crush on me!?

[–]supermonkey1313 0 points1 point ago

Most likely not.

[–]mrchowwow 0 points1 point ago

Noted.

[–]supermonkey1313 -1 points0 points ago

There is a very, very, slim chance, however. I'll message you, trying to be as vague as possible.

[–]mrchowwow -1 points0 points ago

I was mostly joking, being a vegetarian atheist. But, there are a LOT of us out there.

[–]supermonkey1313 1 point2 points ago

Still, it'd be cool to know that someone I know is a Redditor.

[–]westknife 0 points1 point ago

Wait a second... is it Neil Degrasse Tyson!? He can't be your crush because he's MY crush.

[–]iaacp 0 points1 point ago

Neil Degrasse Tyson isn't atheist, so no.

[–]supermonkey1313 0 points1 point ago

What. The. Lump. No.

[–]namith 1 point2 points ago

I'm distracted because to me this gif says "you just asked a really good question that I have a really good answer for."

[–]Oxtorius 1 point2 points ago

Why does it even matter? I'm an atheist and my girlfriend is a Christian. It never ment a simple thing in our relationship.

[–]sam_hammich 3 points4 points ago

Your experience is not typical.

[–]BlueParrot 1 point2 points ago

You know how Sweden has a reputation for nice women...

Highest proportion of atheists in the world!

[–]Mattycore 0 points1 point ago

Sweden is like an oasis of beautiful freely thinking people lol

[–]Modokon 0 points1 point ago

I like it in my Volvo, with ABBA cranked to 11.

I also chase chickens...kill the chicken...

[–]Mattycore 0 points1 point ago

Lol not a bad life

[–]akr8683 1 point2 points ago

i'm really tired of dating girls and having to listen to their idiotic religious beliefs - not well formed, personal reasons for belief, but really really stupid beliefs.

[–]Mattycore 0 points1 point ago

Trust me dude, I've dated plenty of gorgeous atheist women. They're plenty out there.

[–]akr8683 0 points1 point ago

where do you live? I live in MISSOURI. My school is in a town of about 20,000.

[–]Mattycore 0 points1 point ago

I'm from the greater Philadelphia area with millions of people lol sorry bro but you gotta get out of their.

[–]poolboywax 1 point2 points ago

is she on reddit? does she know your username?

[–]Zamb97[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yes she's on reddit but I don't think she knows my username

[–]poolboywax 1 point2 points ago

i wonder how many girls out there are thinking "i just told a guy recently that i'm an atheist. i wonder if this is him."

and i wonder if one of them is her.

[–]Aptspire 1 point2 points ago

They've got the moves like Sagan :D

[–]thuhnc 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit, is that Carl Sagan? This is now the best .gif ever.

[–]Mattycore 0 points1 point ago

Yes it is

[–]han5henman 0 points1 point ago

i showed this to a friend of mine (a female), she called me a noodle. apparently thats meant to be affection. thanks carl! <3

[–]contemplor 0 points1 point ago

Mine is. She has agnostic, but if I trust anyone, it's science as her religion on her facebook page. (And no, I don't stalk her, I just clicked the about section because I wanted to know if I was really into her or not)

[–]daBandersnatch 0 points1 point ago

And then I found out she didn't want to date.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I'm jealous. There are no such thing as atheist women here in Southwest Missouri. Hell, there aren't even any agnostic ones.

[–]Mattycore 0 points1 point ago

Get out, get the fuck out. Being on the east coast and Philadelphia, I have a hard time finding girl who even believe in god. It's crazy lol

[–]jebusthe2nd 0 points1 point ago

i will laways laugh at this GIf what ever context it appears in.

[–]drfunkenstien014 0 points1 point ago

Is..is that George Harrison?

[–]Mattycore 0 points1 point ago

No my reddit friend, that is the one and only Carl Segan. Author of the book and movie 'contact'.

[–]Skarmotastic 0 points1 point ago

I live in deep south Texas, so it was more of a "Marry me now!"

[–]Elle_Yeah 0 points1 point ago

I don't know how I haven't seen this .gif until now. Upvote for you.

[–]AnomalousX12 0 points1 point ago

Seriously one of the best feelings when you find out the girl you're interested in shares your (a-)religious beliefs. Finding out they're religious is just such an "Oh..." moment for me. I mean, conversion is always possible but I don't want to be that guy unless someone tries to do it to me first. I'm pretty firm in believing that relationships can't work between two people with different religious beliefs (If they're both very strong believers).

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]AnomalousX12 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I'm definitely not supportive of that sort of "Conversion." I don't do any drugs, I'm 21 and I refuse to drink, I work extremely hard to save sexual activities for real and serious relationships, and I don't find myself very attracted to women who do much of any of that stuff. When I attempt to convert, I just use logic and reasoning and try to put myself in their religious world in order to find how to tear it apart. I don't try to loosen them up by showing them how good being "Sinful" feels. That sends the wrong message about atheists, in my opinion. I want to show people that we can have the same morals that they try to have without a fear of hell hanging over us.

[–]tuffbot324 0 points1 point ago

Sauce?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Here's the source.

From Episode 7 of the Cosmos series. (Here it is on Netflix Instant Stream!)

[–]tuffbot324 1 point2 points ago

Thanks!

[–]dustinechos 0 points1 point ago

It's in one of the cosmos episodes. A elementary student asked him why the earth is flat.

EDIT: doubt I can find it. Someone posted it on youtube a while ago. You should really just go watch all of the cosmos series.

[–]tuffbot324 0 points1 point ago

Thanks

[–]IncognitoDopeAccount -1 points0 points ago

Holy shit, this is front page material here? I knew this place was a circlejerk, but god damn, this is like /r/circlejerk level circlejerking. A gif of Carl Sagan? That's all you need to get over 700 karma? This is one Ron Paul away from being literally the bravest thing I've ever seen.

[–]Zamb97[S] -2 points-1 points ago

For the record, I'm just as surprised as you are, and it's making me think that the rest of reddit might not be so wrong about /r/atheism

[–][deleted] ago

[–]fintorro 0 points1 point ago

Atheist dating site?

[–]goofygoobarock -1 points0 points ago

That sounds awful.

[–]sneeze10 -2 points-1 points ago

...do...do those exist, fuck I should have known learning how to google would be necessary

[–]BTMaverick707 -1 points0 points ago

Never said do... Shouldn't take things so literal.

[–]sneeze10 -1 points0 points ago

i was joking, i forgot inflection cant be shown while typing
