The irony is more visible when you realize that such a religion relies on having an imaginary super-parent figure.

[–]Aavagadrro 2 points3 points ago

Childish things need to be put away? Fuck that. Be responsible, but you have to keep that child like sense of wonder and curiosity, otherwise life will just drive you crazy.

[–]Xuanwu 1 point2 points ago

Worrying about what is childish is also childish. To be an adult is to know yourself enough to do what is right and moral without concerning yourself with judgement of others.

That includes playing video games in your spare time, and disbelieving invisible sky fairies.

I've always thought that being an adult isn't about being "mature", but more about knowing when to not be immature.

Basically, leaving the room when you have to blow a thunderous fart.

[–]Crimsai[S] 0 points1 point ago

Exactly! Unless it'll be really funny.

[–]Lots42 -1 points0 points ago

True, true, true. You gotta wait until everyone is quiet.

Bonus: Fart behind the small kids, confuse the adults.

Whenever someone talks about childish things it makes me think of an old Stephen Wright joke. "Any book is a childrens book if the kid can read." Just because kids do it doesn't mean it's childish.

Side note : I feel for you about being a closet atheist. My gf is probably the only person who knows I'm an atheist. It doesn't come up in my family but her family is crazy religious. I'm surprised my tongue wasn't in two by the end of her family party for the fourth.

[–]Crimsai[S] 0 points1 point ago

That sucks, man. Is your gf also an atheist? I've always had the impression that religious people in America (I assume you're from America since you mentioned the 4th) are a lot harsher in their beliefs, but I feel like my mum would fit in well in the bible belt. I remember her recently talking about how she thought Whitney Houston was possessed before she died. I also found my dad reading some book about "God's war on terror", about how Islam is the anti-christ. On top of that, growing up in Northern Ireland, religion could often be a life or death matter depending on who you talked to.

Wow you have me beat completely. You got my sympathy. Her family is more hilarious than offensive.

[–]Lots42 1 point2 points ago

Apart from religion it's still dumb. I have a shitload of childish toys and I enjoy them. I just got finished dusting a bunch of G.I.Joes.

[–]Phapeu 1 point2 points ago

Do people really quote the bible often apart from priests in church?

I'm just curious as I've never heard anybody do it.

[–]MUnhelpful 0 points1 point ago

When arguing in favor of their personal prejudices as legislation, yes - although I also see plenty of statements of religious "truths" without specific scriptural quotations.

[–]Phapeu 1 point2 points ago

Fair enough. There doesn't really tend to be as much theological debate where I'm from as there appears to be (from Reddit) in the US. Thanks for answering.

I'm a covert Atheist too. What religion are you pretending to follow?

[–]Crimsai[S] 0 points1 point ago

Christianity. I grew up in a Pentecostal church, the ones who believe in healing and speaking in tongues and stuff, which I believed in until about a year ago. The problem is, amongst other things, I think it would kill my mum if I left. My brother and sister no longer go to church, and I know how much it hurts her to think her children are going to hell. Honestly, I'm just trying to hold on for the next two years until I hopefully get into university somewhere far, far away.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

If you tell her then she'll just believing the university turned you atheist.

[–]Treesandlove 0 points1 point ago

I know what you mean. I'm covert because i know that it will crush my parents and they arent exactly living the ideal life either. Also i'm pretty sure my family won't accept it and continue loving me. And I don't know if i can live with that.

covert atheist

What the fuck?

[–]12w12w -1 points0 points ago

STOP BEING A COVERT ATHEIST. You don't need to shout it, but don't be afraid to say you're an atheist when it comes up.

[–]Crimsai[S] 0 points1 point ago

I wish I could but it's not such a black and white issue.

[–]padre_pedofilo -3 points-2 points ago

Here is the truth http://map.gsfc.nasa.gov/universe/uni_age.html and then you have this lie http://www.creationtips.com/earthsage.html, and what you get is confusion. The first one is true the second one is false but because they teach them both to children who do not know which is the real data they then lock up on both the universe is 14 billion years old and the Bible says it is 6 Thousand years old and the children can not think with this conflicting data and their minds lock up and get confused. This is what bugs me!
