You can basically get the cops called on you for lighting any right now in Indiana, with the high temps and zero rain we've had.

[–]williemcbride 15 points16 points ago

I'm in Colorado, and it's even worse here. Half the goddamn state is burning.

[–]squishymonkey 4 points5 points ago

I was about to call the police on some people down the street last night for setting off fireworks, but the police were already down there within 10 minutes. They're really cracking down hard here.

[–]DangerousIdeas 5 points6 points ago

With good reason.

[–]williemcbride 0 points1 point ago

They should be, too. That shit isn't a fucking thing to play with any more, it's a legitimate danger.

[–]squishymonkey 0 points1 point ago

Totally. I don't even know how people can complain about not being able to shoot off fireworks. It's like they'd rather celebrate their freedom by showing of explosives and endangering the lives of others, than celebrating a different way for the time being.

[–]exor674 2 points3 points ago

I wonder how many people are going to be setting off fireworks illegally tonight... *sigh*

[–]williemcbride 4 points5 points ago

I'm only 17, and this is the first year that nearly all of my friends said "You know what, we should NOT do the fireworks this year." Normally we have shittons of illegal fireworks, but it's so bad that even us dumbass teenagers aren't lighting 'em off.

[–]exor674 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for being responsible!

[–]Learned-Hand 8 points9 points ago

Somewhere in your state, a Jeff Goldblumesque character is desperately trying to convince the governor that he needs to call in the national guard in advance.

"You're going to have wildfires erupting in crowded subdivisions across the state. Rapid response evacuation is the only way to save lives!" But his pleading will fall on deaf ears.

Edit: deft to deaf [7] Thank you, holy moustache

[–]St-Moustache 5 points6 points ago

Wouldn't deft ears jump to solve the problem?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

You'd think more people would understand Jeff's simple explanations of chaos theory.

[–]IForgotMyPants 1 point2 points ago

Arizona here. Last year they legalized selling of fire works, but it's still illegal to use them. Probably for the same reason you guys have, dry heat. Although oddly enough, it pouring rain right now.....

[–]alexkria 1 point2 points ago

I'm in Indiana and people have been setting off fireworks here for a week..

[–]UhCrunch 0 points1 point ago

Fellow Hoosier here, I can confirm this. [Then again I'm from New Castle, so it's probably just Meth labs exploding from the heat]

[–]SparxD 0 points1 point ago

I'm in California and my neighborhood has been setting them off for nearly a month already.

[–]Kurupt55 1 point2 points ago

Yeah theres a fireban in several counties here it sucks

[–]Tarman83 3 points4 points ago

Here in KY fireworks have been banned. You can't buy them locally. Didn't keep the hicks from blasting them off at 1am this morning.

[–]Cuplink 1 point2 points ago

Thankfully we have Indiana to buy them at.

[–]Bladewing10 1 point2 points ago

Yup. It's hilarious that people think a "ban" is going to prevent people from buying and shooting them off. I just went across the river and bought an armful and I'm going to be shooting them off tonight.

[–]Tarman83 0 points1 point ago

It's just policy. It'll be impossible to actually enforce, but if there's actually a risk of fire, they have to atleast attempt to keep it from happening. At the very least, people will be a bit more responsible knowing they're banned for that reason. Nobody wants to be that guy.

[–]magmay 0 points1 point ago

no cookouts either :(

actually, I think dearborn county doesn't have a fire thing up, but then again it's dearborn county

[–]Zimoria 0 points1 point ago

I'm so worried some idiot is going to light up my lawn with their stupidity. =[ I hear the fireworks but I can't usually see where they're at so theres not much of a point in calling the police. =/

[–]itouchboobs 0 points1 point ago

That's why you get along with your neighbors. I'm in ft wayne, and we are shooting them all day.

[–]CTDiesel 0 points1 point ago

Certain parts of Indy have been lucky recently. North of town and parts east got a decent soaking in the last several days along with some parts of the south. Central hasn't got much more than a drop, if any. Where we are we've had about 3-4 minutes of moderate rain in about two months time now.

[–]FakeColours 0 points1 point ago

Yup, its illegal in Bartholomew county right now

[–]gnit2 67 points68 points ago

Last night wasn't the 4th of July, hate to break it to ya.

[–]stuckit 38 points39 points ago

Tell that to the people lighting the fireworks off after midnight near my house.

[–]toxicxgaming 8 points9 points ago

Well they lit it off at midnight that counts as July 4th

[–]stuckit 0 points1 point ago

that is what i was implying by "after midnight".

[–]highlandprincess 7 points8 points ago

My city did their fireworks last night because it's supposed to rain tonight or something.

[–]miss_jessi 14 points15 points ago

Our city always does fireworks on the 3rd. I have no idea why, though.

[–]CraigularB 2 points3 points ago

A lot of places do. In my hometown I think the surrounding towns all kind of staggered their big displays because people will go to more than one show over the weekend since the towns are so close.

[–]BrotherSeamus 2 points3 points ago

Get liquored up during fireworks show.. sleep in the next morning. Genius really.

[–]pacman404 0 points1 point ago

Because everyone has to go back to work on the 5th, but most everyone has the fourth off. You can stay up late with your kids or drink or whatever and not worry about waking up early to handle business. At least that's why my town does it on the 3rd

[–]Mahuloq -1 points0 points ago

Fireworks are not restricted to one day of the year. Also, because it is a Wednesday alot of people fire their off on the weekend.

[–]Tectronix 56 points57 points ago

its cool until the field across from my house catches fire because of people setting off fireworks...

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

I worry about this every year. Amateurs who have no business operating explosives firing off fireworks from backyards all around my house. What if one of them lands on my roof or in my yard and sets it ablaze?

[–]vcaylor77 5 points6 points ago

Yup. Table on my patio caught fire due to someone's carelessness. Scared the dog shit out of me. I'm just glad I was here and able to put it out before it got out of control.

[–]Potater 4 points5 points ago

You have dog shit in you?

[–]vcaylor77 4 points5 points ago

Not now, no.

[–]iamcase 0 points1 point ago

You had dog shit in you?

[–]HaiUzeGuize 3 points4 points ago

This is why's it's good to have a few buckets of water on standby. Also, you can get a Class-C Limited User License from the ATF for $75 and it's good for the rest of your life.

[–]danE3030 1 point2 points ago

you can get a Class-C Limited User License from the ATF for $75 and it's good for the rest of your life.

source?

[–]HaiUzeGuize 0 points1 point ago

Sorry, I misread, it's a $75 PERMIT with no renewal fee and it's only good for a year. You only need a license to sell, manufacture and store explosives.

http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-5400-13.pdf

Edit: You can also get a full User Permit for $100 and it only costs $50 to renew it every 3 years.

[–]penis-butter 1 point2 points ago

Then it becomes awesome.

[–]Decyde 100 points101 points ago

It's America until you have to clean that shit out of your yard. We use to have neighbors a block away light shit every 4th and EVERYTHING landed in mine and the next door neighbor's yard. It was pretty annoying cleaning up hundreds of bottle rocket sticks and other misc garbage. Oh, and when you ask them if they will clean it up they said you can't prove it was ours.....Grats getting fined the next 3 years +. Lets see if we can make tonight the 4th.

[–]TheCollective01 59 points60 points ago

That's why we have laws against so much shit...because stupid people ruin it for everybody (your neighbors down the block, not you).

[–]Decyde 13 points14 points ago

Yea, that and if it's very dry outside and you light some types of fireworks you run the risk of fires. That in the middle of a city could really do some damage. Right now, most of the lawns in my neighborhood are dried up and add that to the brush and junk from the massive wind storm last weekend then you got yourself the potential for a nice mess. And I'm not against fireworks at all. I have 2 big grocery bags full downstairs right now but I'm going out to the outside of town to let them off this weekend.

[–]JoelQ 17 points18 points ago

Fires? No way. I'm in the dry, arid, brush mountains of Colorado. I don't think it will be a problem.

[–]Decyde 6 points7 points ago

That whole mess started from snakes and sparklers!

[–]nextplzzzz 3 points4 points ago

What if we just make a really huge snake firework that way it will be safe for everyone!?

[–]Bestpaperplaneever 0 points1 point ago

What a coincidence that I rewatched this episode a mere two days ago.

[–]MacMonkey 2 points3 points ago

Who the fuck gave the snakes sparklers?!

[–]bobnojio 1 point2 points ago

I want an answer for this. ^

[–]jestr6 13 points14 points ago

Michigan just changed the law. Now idiots are allowed to purchase and ignite "consumer grade" fireworks the day before, day of and day after the Fourth. Unfortunately all these morons heard was "All fireworks are legal now! Let's shoot them off in a densely populated residential area until 1am while getting so intoxicated that we can barely stand let alone maintain control of low grade explosives! 'Murica fuck yeah!"

Or something like that. Meanwhile, I am now outside during the hottest day Michigan has seen this year (I think), picking up a small garbage bag full of cardboard and solid fuel remnants. In addition I now have to wash the very visible residue of said solid fuels, off my vehicles.

Ok crazy old man rant over. Happy Independence Day to all American Redditors! Canada, that's a pretty sweet bridge you guys are rockin' on Google. U.K. sorry it didn't work out, it was us not you. I'm glad we stayed besties though.

TL;DR Angry old man hates cleaning up firework aftermath.

[–]icanseestars 5 points6 points ago

You should try living here. Fireworks are illegal but the police ignore it. Fireworks will go off until 1 am and the air will be so filled with smoke that you cannot breath outside without thinking you're living inside a just-fired shotgun.

[–]knoxlax48 7 points8 points ago

quit being a pussy

[–]blaqpope 2 points3 points ago

+1...I don't believe for a second that the smoke is so fucking thick outside you cant breath. You guys really are a bunch of twats

[–]Bladewing10 1 point2 points ago

Seriously. The amount of butthurt in this thread is hilarious. It's one night a year where people get to blow shit up. How can anyone have a problem with that?

[–]jestr6 1 point2 points ago

Sorry to hear that, I feel ya man. Where is "here"?

[–]RupertGraves 1 point2 points ago

There was a couple in the parking lot of our apartment who were virtually blacked out drunk. I knocked the lit firecracker out of their 8 year old's hand - he was just standing there holding it watching us come out. He forgot to throw it. Golf clap This is America indeed...

[–]jestr6 1 point2 points ago

Please tell me you slapped the hell out of the parents.

[–]RupertGraves 1 point2 points ago

I will be placing a call to child protective services tomorrow as soon as they open. I don't have high hopes, but maybe it will scare them straight if they are investigated.

[–]HSpencer 2 points3 points ago

As another Michigander dealing with this shit, I feel your pain. Was trying to work on a fence yesterday evening, and I have really bad paranoia problems, so every time one of those goddamn things would go off, I'd have a mini heart attack and drop whatever board I was holding. Eventually it was next-to-impossible for me to do any work, and it was just... so frustrating, ugh. They kept shooting the damn things off until 11, 12, even 1 in the morning too. I was so tempted to call the fucking cops for a noise violation, even though it's technically legal.

Mind you, these people were at the other end of the street, probably a football field's distance away. I felt so bad for their actual neighbors.

Edit: Also, given how INSANELY hot it is (for Michigan) right now, isn't doing that sort of stuff in a residential area an EXTREME fire hazard? Like, their house was at the corner of a 3-way intersection, so there were houses on all sides. Plus, they were shooting off legit fireworks, not just sparklers and firecrackers.

[–]jestr6 1 point2 points ago

If they lighting them off in the street, it is not legal. They must be launched from private property. Also, depending on where you live, I'm pretty sure after 11pm is illegal as well. I know it is where I live.

I did call the cops but they were so swamped they never sent anyone over. I don't really mind fireworks, but the howitzers they were launching are completely uncalled for. God I sound like a cranky old man. Really I am a nice guy everyone!

[–]HSpencer 1 point2 points ago

Shit, they were lighting them in the street from the get-go, yeah. If I had known that's illegal, I would've called it in right away. Sorry, but I worked hard on that house and the new fence being put in, and I am NOT going to watch it go up in flames because of a bunch of drunk idiots. Digging 30-something holes sucked hard enough.

Also, for reference, this was the downriver area.

[–]jestr6 0 points1 point ago

Sent you a message regarding the Michigan law, didn't want to clutter up the thread.

[–]I_TYPE_IN_ALL_CAPS 1 point2 points ago

while getting so intoxicated that we can barely stand let alone maintain control of low grade explosives!

EXPLOSIVE FIREWORKS ARE A GOOD THING. IDIOTS AND IRRESPONSIBLE DRUNKS WILL BLOW FINGERS OFF. FROM THAT POINT ON, THEIR HANDS WILL BEAR THE MARK OF STUPIDITY, LIKE A SCARLET LETTER A. FOR EXAMPLE:

HANDS CHANGE TO CASHIER, EVERYONE NOTICES MISSING FINGERS

"AH, IDIOT, HUH?"

"NAH, JUST AN IRRESPONSIBLE DRUNK."

"SEE, BILLY, THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN DON'T DRINK RESPONSIBLY."

THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE WITHIN A GENERATION.

[–]jestr6 1 point2 points ago

While I can't argue the end result, I'd really rather get to that point without my house, lawn, neighborhood catching fire first.

[–]tawayokay 5 points6 points ago

Dude it's just once a year.

[–]dnj 8 points9 points ago

Why do you hate your neighbour's freedom so much?

[–]Bladewing10 2 points3 points ago

It's a couple nights a year. I think you can deal with some fallout for such a brief amount of time. Are you going to call the police if your neighbor's plastic bag rolls into your yard as well?

[–]jpanside 0 points1 point ago

hmm they should invent fireworks that completely burn themselves up so that there is no need to clean other than the launcher.

[–]nova20 0 points1 point ago

I usually just leave that crap in my yard and let the lawnmower take care of it. Then it's like confetti!

[–]blinkdmb 25 points26 points ago

Or like the people who live in my neighborhood, they decided set off fireworks at 1:30 AM and wake up my son. I have just as much of a right of a nights sleep as you do to blow off fireworks in the middle of the night.

[–]violetxrain 2 points3 points ago

Actually you have much more of a right to sleep.

[–]Dicktremain 6 points7 points ago

When the cops showed up did you say, "What do you wanna do?"

[–]The_Underminer 5 points6 points ago

Batdad knows no fear, Batdad knows no pain!

[–]JoelQ 0 points1 point ago

I can't think about that episode without getting this song stuck in my head.

[–]ramsrgood 6 points7 points ago

wrong subreddit.

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points ago

You should move to Germany where we can set off as many fireworks as we want. Ever see a German New Years Eve? The entire sky is ALL fireworks. Freaking amazing. Also, can drink in public. I am an American but I have far more freedom living in Germany.

[–]Lucky_Bastard63 19 points20 points ago

You can set off fireworks in the middle of a city any time you like?

[–]JAMDIAM 34 points35 points ago

I was in Berlin for New Years a couple of years back. This is indeed true. After midnight, it was like the Soviets were storming it again.

[–]toThe9thPower 4 points5 points ago

Too soon!

[–]cbmuser 8 points9 points ago

This is actually wrong. Sale and use of fireworks has always been allowed in Germany from Dec, 29 throughout Dec, 31 only, that is, within two days if New Year's Eve.

And if you're going to set up fireworks inside a city in the middle of the year, you can count to three and the police will be there to fine you.

There is only one exception where - while still not legal, but the police will still grant it - you can use fireworks ourside the season and this is when Germany's team is playing soccer on TV.

[–]Lucky_Bastard63 0 points1 point ago

That is why I asked... so it is just like most cities in America where it is allowed during certain times. Some cities have out right bans on the public using fireworks in the city just as I am guessing Germany and every country has.

[–]cbmuser 0 points1 point ago

so it is just like most cities in America where it is allowed during certain times.

Correct. It's officially only legal at New Year's Eve to fire them. I just looked it up on the German Wikipedia and it says, you may only use fireworks from Dec, 31st 12AM until January, 2nd 12AM. Anything else requires a special permission for explosives. As I said, it's tolerated on certain occasions, but not legal.

The laws are so strict, because we always have hundreds of people every year on New Year's Eve with injuries from fireworks. They're just too dangerous in the hand of non-professionals.

Interesting fact: Importing fireworks from other countries is a serious crime. You're only allowed to buy fireworks from German distributors as they have to carry a certain seal from the Federal Agency for Material Testing.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Yup. People do it pretty much any soccer game... I think you would get the cops called on you if you did it after 10 pm repeatedly on a day where it wasn't expected. But it would be considered a noise violation and you wouldn't get in trouble for the actual fireworks.

[–]3DPDDFCFAG 5 points6 points ago

This is not correct. While it is done nevertheless, fireworks are only allowed to be sold 1 week before New Years (edit: just checked, only 12/29 until 12/31) and only allowed to be fired on New Years Eve.

[–]colinmhayes 1 point2 points ago

We can in Chicago, too. Mostly because the cops have better things to do.

[–]Lucky_Bastard63 0 points1 point ago

This is true in most cities and places but it is still illegal.

[–]xstaticxgpx 2 points3 points ago

enjoy your censored video games. im sure one night of fireworks makes up for that though, amiright?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

My husband gets them uncensored. It isn't that hard.

[–]xstaticxgpx 0 points1 point ago

just like smoking weed everyday or drinking before you turn 21 in the US isn't that hard. doesn't make the law any less insane.

oh and how about that ban of swastikas? Makes me seem like you guys prefer hiding your past instead of just dealing it head on.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Indeed but you get in serious trouble for doing this things when you get caught in the USA.

[–]xstaticxgpx 0 points1 point ago

the only thing you don't get in serious trouble for in the US is white collar crime (just look at the banking collapse, 1 or 2 people got charged for some bullshit and the big fish went scott free).

that and maybe traffic accidents, as compared to europe maybe... not sure how you guys deal with accidents over there

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't know. I don't drive here.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I agree. If you get caught making too much noise after 10 here the cops will be nice the first time they are called. The second time they won't be.

[–]Bitter_Idealist 1 point2 points ago

Freedom to be a douchebag.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

If that is what you choose. But unless you've actually lived outside of the USA how the hell do you know what I am talking about?

[–]Bitter_Idealist 0 points1 point ago

Because I have lived outside of the USA? Not sure why you would assume I haven't.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

You've actually lived in Germany?

[–]Bitter_Idealist 0 points1 point ago

Yes. Why is that so unbelievable to you?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Because then you would understand why I said what I said. Unless you live in a USA I never visited or lived in.

[–]iamnotfromtexas90 0 points1 point ago

" I am an American but I have far more freedom living in Germany." that just blew my mind.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It is true. Also, the cops are really nice.

[–]NathanD3 25 points26 points ago

I don't know if i'm just slowly turning into an angry old man, but I fucking hate people lighting off loud fireworks late at night. If you want to do it fine, but go to a park, or somewhere that's not a neighborhood, with people trying to sleep. Also my house has been hit multiple times by my jackass neighbors shooting bottle rockets.

[–]vcaylor77 11 points12 points ago

It's America until your errant embers set someone's patio on fire. This happened to me night before last and it was really frightening. At just before midnight, I looked out of my living room window to see an outdoor table on fire not even three feet from my house. I'm so glad I happened to be home and awake at that hour.

Kudos to those responsible folks who use care and caution with their celebrations and to hell with those who don't.

[–]ViolentOctopus 25 points26 points ago

I'm sorry, I thought this was /r/funny.

[–]JangSaverem 4 points5 points ago

Hey, from what I remember while I was living in 1777, in Boston, there were cannons going off early in the morning waking everyone up. People freaked out because the war was still so recent and still had a looming terror. After all was quite on The Western Front we realized that it was celebration and this was the opposite of what we though it was. Normally these actions of frieworks and cannon along with gun salutes were not allowed but today, on the day of independance, those rules get...well not thrown out but those with judicial power look away. However, though they will look away for a short time, you are a person and are still subject to certain laws such as noise problems or litter problems. No one likes when you leave your firework trash everywhere or you are blowing them past Midnight (on july 4th) people still have things to do and you are causing a disturbance. Go ahead and enjoy the fireworks but be responsible and clean your damn trash up.

[–]Tenshi_girl 19 points20 points ago

Believe it or not, some of us have to work on the 4th. Even if that means spending part of the day on Reddit. That said, I usually don't mind until it keeps going after 1am.

[–]ShitforTits 1 point2 points ago

I'm working until 7, and then going to watch fireworks at a nearby lake.

Best of both worlds? Fuck yeah double time and then pretty colors and loud noises.

[–]GanglarToronto 3 points4 points ago

OP, sorry, but if you light off that many and probably after many complaints, you deserve whatever you had coming to you. Don't care when America became independent, you are an obnoxious douchefag just like the others who light of 100lbs of fireworks every 10 minutes.

[–]andybent25 11 points12 points ago

I live in an apartment complex, that has about 15 buildings within the entire complex. When you set off fireworks ten feet away from my building, you better damn well believe I'm calling the cops on your ass.

[–]MassiveResponse 1 point2 points ago

For people who don't live in apartment complexes, could you explain?

[–]andybent25 0 points1 point ago

It's a large set of apartment buildings all in one location. Think of a residential neighborhood, but with apartments. They're all very close together, and the people setting off fireworks were obviously thinking out of their asses.

[–]danE3030 3 points4 points ago

You could also just ask them to stop without involving LEO's, but that would require interacting with humans face to face, not sure if that's a deal-breaker or not.

What if you smelled some weed being smoked coming into your apartment and it was bothering you? Would you ask them to stop or just call the cops? Not a loaded/leading question, I'm genuinely curious if it would make a difference.

In an ideal world we could always just talk to people before having to resort to calling in the cops but I know if its a bunch of drunk douchebags lighting fireworks the chances of having a productive talk are slim to none.

[–]jestr6 2 points3 points ago

Your last sentence is correct. I did and have "interacted" with my neighbors regarding this subject. However, all I got for my troubles were a bunch of drunks berating my wife and me. So next step was LEO. Had about as much success with them as I did with interacting with my neighbors.

[–]danE3030 0 points1 point ago

Ugh, sorry to hear that, my experiences have been similar.

[–]andybent25 0 points1 point ago

Comparing a firework setting multiple apartments on fire and endangering lives versus the smell of weed is idiotic. People had already been out to talk to them and tell them to knock it off, and they didn't stop. I'm not going to wait around for them to set my fucking building on fire.

[–]taboo007 8 points9 points ago

You can be free until 10 pm then you can't make a noise! At least that what my neighborhood is like.

[–]NickelPickler 2 points3 points ago

No, this is Patrick.

[–]lloopy 2 points3 points ago

In Denver, you get a fine of like $500 and a month of jail time.

But then again, Colorado is burning, and people are losing their homes, so it's probably a good thing that there's some disincentive for setting more fires.

[–]M4053946 2 points3 points ago

When my kid was less than six months old, and my wife and I were sleep deprived, the neighbors decided to set off fireworks EVERY weekend. At 9:00, 10:00, and 11:00 pm. It was extremely annoying. Fireworks July 4th? No problem. But all through the summer? Yes, I'm going to call the cops.

[–]masterm 0 points1 point ago

11 pm isn't late, maybe you should have talked to them first.

[–]M4053946 0 points1 point ago

Asking nicely hasn't worked. And, I know that "late" is relative, but when the lights are out in all the homes, and the entire neighborhood is quiet except for the explosions you're setting off, then you're setting them off too late.

[–]meatwad75892 2 points3 points ago

If you were lighting fireworks in a dry area with a burn ban, then fuck you. I'm all for 'Merica and fireworks, but fire is a dangerous thing can really put a damper on someone's day, and it's just not a cool thing to do.

If you weren't, then carry on good sir!

[–]kocyandia 20 points21 points ago

its the forth tonight and anyone setting off ground to air fireworks is gettin the cops called on them by me. WHY? because this is 'murica and i can and i dont want my house or any thing around me on fire since we havent had a decent rain for 2 months

[–]kocyandia 6 points7 points ago

indiana here BTW

[–]hooizyoo 3 points4 points ago

I didn't know Indiana still had commies.

[–]bvanman 6 points7 points ago

Now I get why people say Indiana is a red state.

[–]Tearill 5 points6 points ago

So youre the kind of asshole who lights fireworks before the forth for the forth.

[–]Pretty_Odd1111 6 points7 points ago

we are on a burn ban in Indiana, $1000 fine if you are caught using fireworks...it sucks

[–]kocyandia 24 points25 points ago

i called the cops on some folks last night, its fun and games till the neighbor hood burns down

[–]imfm 2 points3 points ago

Burn ban here, too. I don't give a damn about the noise, but go fire them off somewhere that won't burn down my house.

[–]kocyandia 0 points1 point ago

agree 100% here they have a big show at the speedway every year that the fire dept overseas

[–]Pretty_Odd1111 1 point2 points ago

i agree, but my friend had a huge party planned the day they issued the ban, they spent $200 on fireworks they can't use

[–]masterm 0 points1 point ago

what's unfortunate is they dont draw a distinction between firecrackers and fireworks. Those little fuckers won't set anything on fire, especially if you plant them right.

[–]Pretty_Odd1111 0 points1 point ago

ban on anything that burns, Indiana is not happy, some counties are pushing their fireworks back for a month because we don't know when the ban will be lifted

[–]masterm 0 points1 point ago

Cigarettes burn, matches burn, your internal combustion engine burns. it's all a mater of how you burn.

[–]Pretty_Odd1111 0 points1 point ago

ok lets clarify no explosives are allowed to be used during the burn ban :)

[–]masterm 0 points1 point ago

thats stupid, there are many non combustible explosives

[–]Pretty_Odd1111 0 points1 point ago

yeah, but Indiana isn't the most detailed, so it's pretty much just any fireworks at all, no fire crackers or anything you can light

[–]kelustu 24 points25 points ago

I would call the cops on you for lighting fireworks on the night of July 3rd.

[–]othersomethings 2 points3 points ago

Well, I don't begrudge anyone their freedom to do so, and certainly didn't call the cops, but I was silently cursing out my "jumping the gun" neighbors last night as I was trying to rock my son back to sleep for the third time, at midnight.

I expect it on the 4th. Not the 3rd, 2nd, 1st, and basically every night since the fireworks sales stands first showed up.

[–]SoggyCheez 1 point2 points ago

Impressive you got the police to call you. Next lets try to at least a fire truck to come over.

[–]h0rn37 1 point2 points ago

We actually had some punk kid shoot fireworks at our Fire Engine while responding back to quarters for a call... Later on that night a cop pulled into our firehouse and asked us to take them. Oddly enough, he gave them to our Engine Officer as he said "Yeah, the kid was firing them off ____ Street" who'da thought it was the same street!

But seriously, just be careful and don't be stupid like that.

[–]fortvlc 0 points1 point ago

Wait. They shot them at your fire truck?

If they're doing this, I'll have to keep my eyes open while responding to any calls.

It's all fun and games to shoot fireworks at the firefighters until you accidentally shoot a bottle rocket through your bedroom window.

[–]h0rn37 0 points1 point ago

Yup... it hit the side of our Engine and we were like "Wtf was that..." I hopped out and didn't see anything but a water bottle so I assumed we ran over that...

Be careful if you're on shift tonight! Last year I was on a stand-by and I had a group of fireworks "go awry" and fire right at us... oy.

[–]kleptooo 1 point2 points ago

might be a dumb question but after you shoot like bottle rockets and stuff up does it all blow up or does the trash fall down on random people houses? im from cali so all we have are stupid fountains

[–]GanglarToronto 1 point2 points ago

The sticks fall down on roofs and yards, etc edit: sometimes hot and still on fire to ignite grass/furniture/other faggotry

[–]CoyoteStark 1 point2 points ago

You have to have a BAC of at least .08 to light off fireworks on any day other than Merica's birthday.

[–]venustas 1 point2 points ago

Right now, in the midwest, there's a complete ban on fireworks and other forms of dangerous burning. Trash fires, welders, cutting torches, chainsaws, etc. But then again, my state is already on FUCKING FIRE.

[–]rylos 0 points1 point ago

It's a little late for a ban now, isn't it?

[–]kindredflame 1 point2 points ago

Fireworks within the first 2 hours after sunset I can live with. Fireworks into the wee hours of the morning, not so much. We have some idiots a few houses down from where we're staying who set off fireworks from around 9pm until about 2 this morning. Not continuously. Just periodic bursts of firecrackers and bottle rockets that lasted 10 minutes at a time coupled with drunken hollering followed by 10 or 15 minutes of silence. The dogs and kids would just be settling down to sleep, then the commotion would start. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. For 5 hours. Our decision to call the police came right around the time my buddy's 2 year old was so psychotically desperate for sleep that he was starting to bang his head onto the floor.

[–]splashysmash 1 point2 points ago

See and I live in Utah, meaning I have NO sympathy for anyone lighting fireworks right now. Our entire state is on fucking fire. So the people who still feel like pyrotechnics are a solid idea during the driest conditions we've seen in forty years is a solid idea should literally be kicked in the balls. Amen.

[–]Joshyboy401 1 point2 points ago

Dude, I can't even light fireworks in NYC

[–]Ultrace-7 1 point2 points ago

If you want sympathy, give details. How late we're you shooting off fireworks? How many? Hw dangerous/loud were they? Too many assholes feel like they have the right to keep everyone else up at the wee hours of the morning with dangerous (or dangerously misused) fireworks.

[–]Protocol2319 1 point2 points ago

If you fired any less than 28800 bottle rockets in less than a minute, then your neighbors are pussies.

[–]madwickedguy 1 point2 points ago

A HUGE swath of states in the midwest have a personal fireworks ban in place for a reason. There are red flag fire warnings all over because of the lack of rain, creating a VERY real danger of setting your entire fucking neighborhood on fire asshole.

[–]this_is_an_alt 1 point2 points ago

as if you only set off fireworks one night of the fourth celebration extravaganza (I know where I am from people started setting off fireworks the day before yesterday and various firework celebrations will happen probably till Saturday night)

[–]OnlyStandard 5 points6 points ago

[–]shadyoaks 6 points7 points ago

it's all fun and games until your whole state is on fire.

[–]gyrorobo 4 points5 points ago

And then it's hilarious

But seriously, I live in Michigan and we just got some big ass rainstorm all day yesterday so my neighbors better enjoy some nice fireworks.

[–]colinbr96 4 points5 points ago

Yesterday I had a cop pull up and flash his badge for blowing smoke into his yard. It was a bit overkill in my opinion.

[–]QuintinT 2 points3 points ago

I never understood why people light fireworks off the day before the 4th

[–]StayDilated 1 point2 points ago

For everyone saying that fireworks are dangerous and that is why they should be illegal and are also saying they are "messy"..lets start making a list of other things that shall be illegal.

  • Hammers - Cause numerous hand injuries each year and can also be used to kill or severely injury another.
  • Axe - See hammers
  • Cars - Cars are involved in thousands beyond thousands of death and injuries nationwide year round. Sometimes, they can even catch on fire which also raises the risk of fires and massive explosions.
  • Hair Spray - Hair spray and other aerosol products can cause fires, damage our o-zone layer and can be used in conjunction with other products to create explosives
  • Saws - See hammers and axes
  • Any type of heavy machinery
  • Pyrotechnic shows - Contrary to popular belief, these shows aren't immune to injury or malfunctions
  • Smoking
  • Fireplaces
  • ovens
  • Water heaters
  • 100% of all Chemicals

shall we continue?

Stop buying into laws that are here to "protect" us. You cannot and will not be protected no matter what law is put into place. you can still get hurt and you will get hurt. Stop being fucking pussies and enjoy freedom. There was a reason we could see that the flag was still there..and no it wasn't because a flood light was being pointed at it.

[–]violetxrain 1 point2 points ago

But those other things can cause injuries if used improperly. Fireworks can cause widespread damage when used correctly. There's really no way to control where the embers land once they're in the air and the damage is too widespread. If you have an accident with an ax or hammer you can injure yourself of someone who's assisting or just closer than they should be. If you have a mishap with fireworks you can end up burning down several acres of land devastating both wildlife and domestic life.
With that being said, a professional fireworks show is done with much more caution than some random person playing with them at home. Most importantly there are always fire fighters present so that if anything does happen to catch fire it can be contained asap.
So I'm not entirely against fireworks, but lets leave it to the professionals just as you would with many of the items on your list.
Oh and overall I don't believe in laws to protect us from ourselves mostly because if someone wants to do something they'll do it regardless of what the law says.

[–]InHarmsWay 0 points1 point ago

Anyways, fireworks will weed out the stupid people who are reckless around explosives.

[–]rileyrulesu 3 points4 points ago

ITT: Grumpy old men telling you to stop having fun.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

If you were the one setting them off at midnight last night in Dallas, TX then you deserved it. Middle of a huge city and shooting those things off that late? There are children sleeping that late. It wasn't even the 4th!

[–]Ultrace-7 1 point2 points ago

Actually, at midnight last night, it was the fourth.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

lol. Well it started at like 9-10. The big "finale" happened at midnight. It was mostly the early ones that bothered me because we were trying to get our baby to sleep. And we live in downtown. I mean come on.

[–]YanDavison 1 point2 points ago

Not anymore its not.

[–]wEll__0kaythen 1 point2 points ago

You asshole!

[–]shadyoaks 0 points1 point ago

I was concerned because I heard people across the street last night setting some off; I live in Utah and there's already enough wildfires going right now. Fireworks are actually prohibited in this area because of that. Almost called the cops on them too but they stopped.

[–]mjolle 0 points1 point ago

So you did.

[–]SparxD 0 points1 point ago

I'd be curious to know where you are located and what the local rules are. Where I live, all but the shittiest of fireworks are banned. People are only allowed to sell fireworks starting the Monday before the 4th, through the 4th (which this year meant a 3-day selling window), and only for charity. Also, we're only allowed to shoot them off on the 4th, and I think there are time restrictions, too (i.e. NOT after midnight on the 3rd/morning of the 4th).

I love fireworks. Especially the big ones. I love blowing shit up as much as the next person. What I don't like is the fact that there are still some shake roofs in my neighborhood that could literally destroy a home if a firework landed on it. I also don't like that my poor dogs have been in misery for almost 3 weeks now because people have already been shooting them off for that long. I can't afford to, nor do I want to, medicate/sedate my dogs for an entire month.

Because of idiots in my area, the fireworks rules are getting more and more strict every year. Soon, we won't be allowed to have fireworks. They discuss banning them outright every year now. I've more than once thrown out the idea that people should have to pay a small fee to get a license to shoot off fireworks, and it would involve having to take a safety course and signing an agreement that they will only be shot off during a certain date and time, and won't be shared with anyone who's not licensed. It would help make the 4th safer, and at the same time, generate some revenue for the city, county, whatever. Then the person would have to show the license to buy the fireworks, and then the sellers would be able to sell larger, more fun fireworks, and know they aren't putting ammunition into the hands of the area's next wanna-be arsonist. I know it's not ideal, but it's a thought.

[–]Themajor13 0 points1 point ago

In Eastern Montucky there is a $500 fine for being caught with fireworks...

[–]the_alpacalips 0 points1 point ago

In Michigan, they changed the law so that you can light off any amount of fireworks the day before, the day of, and the day after any of the 10 government recognized holidays. The cops can still cite you for a noise complaint though.

[–]bobnojio 0 points1 point ago

so wait... you got the cops called on you, while you were doing something that was likely illegal (even if your state allows fireworks, thats likely a noise violation at the minimum).

gotta go out of city limits to blow shit up, son. that way you dont need no safety precautions.

[–]StoneDeaf 0 points1 point ago

In my beloved country Sweden you actually (or legally if you prefer) need a permit from the Police to use fireworks. No one follows the rules, but anyways. And they're only sold before New Year and Easter, any other sale is in someway illegal...

[–]commanderspoonface 0 points1 point ago

Having a holiday where we light off a bunch of explosives during one of the hottest and driest parts of the year is probably the stupidest thing America has done so far.

[–]name0tavo 0 points1 point ago

Is there anyone whose had the police called on them and tell me what the punishment was? I live in Missouri, and although it is illegal to set off fireworks, the cops usually don't care on July 4th. But now with the risk of forest fires, they'll be cracking down. I already bought some fireworks a few weeks ago, and I don't want all of them going to waste. Please note, I don't plan on firing any rockets, just small firecrackers, fountains, and maybe some parachutes, nor will I be doing this past 11:00 PM. I do plan on cleaning up any trash.

[–]rylos 0 points1 point ago

In missouri in general you can shoot them off all you want normally, but right now a number of areas / cities are being pussies due to the fire hazard. In my city the city council debated on Monday whether to ban fireworks, and decided that since we've been stockpiling them for a couple of weeks already, that to ban them in town would not only piss off a lot of people who would shoot them off anyway, a lot of people would head for the surrounding countryside to shoot them off, where the fire hazard would be a lot greater. So we got to keep our own little slice of war zone! Tonight the fireworks display is still on, with the addition of a few more firetrucks, just in case some stray sparks set the country club on fire.

[–]UhCrunch 0 points1 point ago

[–]girlikecupcake 0 points1 point ago

Good. When I lived in Detroit, the fucks down the street from me would light them the entire week leading to the 4th, between midnight and two in the morning, and we had a baby trying to sleep. The 4th we can understand and plan for, but the while fucking week? No. I will call in a noise complaint.

[–]manonthemount 0 points1 point ago

Where and at what time? America is about exercising freedom insofar as it doesn't infringe upon others.

I woke up this morning to people shooting off fireworks at 3 AM in a densely populated area.

[–]evergleam12 0 points1 point ago

I have the same problem, I work at 4am. After a hour of fussing my son falls asleep at 9pm. A hour later fireworks wake him up! My wife works nights so I'm on my own, did I mention this happens on a Monday night?

[–]LordofBobz 0 points1 point ago

maybe if firework laws werent fucking retarded and you could light them other places then it wouldnt be done in the neighborhoods. but thats the only place its legal, in michigan anyway, parks schools and everywhere else gets you fined. 4th is no fun anymore, everyone just wants to start calling cops

[–]SomeGuy565 0 points1 point ago

Yep. America. Where i have the right to NOT have fireworks shot into tbe air towards my house by a bunch of drunken idiots screaming shit like "yee haw momma. Did ya see how i dun blowed tbat up! Do it again!"

You have rights. I have rights. Fuck off.
