I have to re-watch this film.

[–]bricardo 1 point2 points ago

I did re-watch it. Very good, but it would be much better if Clint had realized that these were first time young actors, and that they needed more takes than the experienced, high caliber actors Clint usually works with. It's a bit of a shame, but the movie still works well. Better the second time even.

I'm not gonna lie. Lots of big, fat, fatties here in Texas.

[–]clickwhistle 43 points44 points ago

A recent survey indicated that two out of every three Texans is one person.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

But there are also a lot of people who aren't fat here!

[–]AustinTreeLover 4 points5 points ago

Not in Austin. I work out, eat healthy, and I wear a size 6. I'm like a fat, sloppy cow here.

Austin is one of the healthiest cities in the U.S. Of course, it's not typical of Texas in general.

Besides being overweight, it seems to me that people are just bigger here. Seriously, it's not just that folks are fat, they're just giants.

[–]leif777 36 points37 points ago

I just lost 20 pounds in 6 months just by not eating as much. I didn't even change the types of food eat. I just ate 2/3rds of what I normally ate. I tried working out and running but that lasted a 2 weeks. Anyway, I figure I can lose another 5lbs. I can at least take my shirt off when I go swimming now.

[–]HorizonShadow 28 points29 points ago

That's how it works.

[–]mamjjasond 7 points8 points ago

That's very good for you. Consider yourself lucky you didn't have to go through an insurmountable amount of struggle to lose that weight.

[–]donagan 2 points3 points ago

Exactly! It's a simple energy balance. If you want to loose weight exercise more and/or eat less. Not rocket science.

[–]Nom_de_Guerra 11 points12 points ago

Thank you for that.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points ago

As a Canadian, it's even more disgusting since here I'm paying for that idiots healthcare

I have no problem with paying to help other people with treatment, but it's annoying as shit to see the emergency room clogged up with a bunch of fat people having troubles because of their unhealthy body. Their decision to stay fat is costing everyone money and costing us wait times at hospitals

[–]Yo_Soy_Candide 19 points20 points ago

Edit: Seems many people can't comprehend my point. My reply is to counter the false notion that being fat costs everyone else more money in healthcare dollars. Which is not true. I am not advocating that people should be fat, I am dismissing the stupid argument that they shouldn't be because it costs us more in taxes. They shouldn't be because it lowers their life expectancy and we all want to live long.

You know what fucking costs us Canadian taxpayers a lot? Old healthy people living so long. Not fat people dying early. Your pissed at your healthcare costs? Go yell at Grandpa. As a Canadian, dumb ill-informed Canadians piss me off.

Forbes article

Now there is no doubt at all that these unhealthy behaviours do have costs, that’s not at issue. The major cost is of course to the imbiber, smoker or lardbucket in the form of a shorter lifespan.

Yes, certainly, there are costs to treating the diseases brought on by too much booze, tobacco or food. But there are costs to treating all diseases, all modes and methods by which we might possibly reach that undoubted destination, the grave.

Research article

Although effective obesity prevention leads to a decrease in costs of obesity-related diseases, this decrease is offset by cost increases due to diseases unrelated to obesity in life-years gained.

Actual costs over 20 years:

The lifetime costs were in Euros:

Healthy: 281,000

Obese: 250,000

Smokers: 220,000

[–]n3onfx 15 points16 points ago

Sooo... because fat people or smokers die earlier they cost LESS because they wont have a bunch of more expensive sicknesses later on?

Brb I'm going to tell everyone to thank me for smoking, I actually cost the less!

[–]tuffskittlez 8 points9 points ago

I don't know why you're getting downvoted, you ARE right.

[–]gunthatshootswords 6 points7 points ago

For sure. Fuck old people.

[–]Obskulum 1 point2 points ago

Haha, let's laugh at them because they're fat and disabled, haha.

[–]OldNose 60 points61 points ago

In Australia they call these 'road trains'

[–]Stanstanlol 17 points18 points ago

Wait...there are fat people outside of America? Surely you're mistaken. If reddit has taught me anything it's that cats are cool, reposts are fine, and America is the only place you could possible be fat.

[–]birdnerd 7 points8 points ago

I rented a car when I visited. I loved the 'Warning - Road Train' signs. They will honk, wave, gesture, flash their lights, but they won't fucking slow down!

[–]tehdon 1 point2 points ago

Slowing down unexpectedly would be very bad for the Road Train.

[–]joshychrist 51 points52 points ago

I want to know why they're not on the fucking sidewalk.

[–]sheriff_skullface 75 points76 points ago

They just merged from the drive-thru.

[–]shstmo 28 points29 points ago

Because sidewalk.

[–]Nightshade33 36 points37 points ago

Cause they need the whole shoulder lane.

[–]RahvinDragand 9 points10 points ago

The sidewalk has a weight limit.

[–]fuckyoubarry 4 points5 points ago

Cause the sidewalk is only a few inches thick.

[–]readzalot1 0 points1 point ago

Some places don't have cut outs at the curbs for wheelchairs. They should, but they don't.

[–]Finaltidus 17 points18 points ago

[–]DevilHorst 39 points40 points ago

the music makes it even better imo :D

[–]shadybrainfarm 4 points5 points ago

Hey south Florida was doing ok until that damn zombie attack gave us a bad name

[–]sheriff_skullface 13 points14 points ago

Sorry, but Florida was fucked up long before the zombie attack.

[–]st1va 8 points9 points ago

South Florida was responsible for that entire Bush/Gore fiasco. We've had a bad name for a while now.

[–]bdog2g2 6 points7 points ago

I believe in the end you have the Supreme Court to blame for that.

[–]st1va 1 point2 points ago

The Supreme Court was part of it.

The rest was that the ballots were printed wrong. The names weren't where they were supposed to be. And old people, stuck in their ways, didn't TRULY read the ballot causing a lot of voting to be swayed oddly. (Third party candidates got a significant part of the voting.)

And the hanging chad thing didn't help. It was a failure all around.

[–]DownvoteDaemon 1 point2 points ago

Speak for yourself I love Tallahassee.

[–]girtalert 7 points8 points ago

You must not live here.

I'm 100% they are in their wheelchairs because they are fat.

Simply being in one doesnt make you fat unless you have a TERRIBLE diet.

[–]masterbasist 27 points28 points ago

the one in the back is missing a leg..

[–]Sionn3039 84 points85 points ago

dat diabeetus

[–]anonymous92 14 points15 points ago

It was actually amputated due to diabetes. What happens is due to the heavy amounts of sugar in their diet, their blood becomes sugary and less fluid, so if they get a cut on their foot bacteria are attracted to it like crazy, and due to the lack of blood flow from their blood being like mayple syrup in terms of viscosity, there is a lack of immune response. Usually the lack of blood flow also reduces feeling in the legs, so they don't even know they cut themselves. The infection would travel up the leg and eventually kill the person, but doctors instead amputate the foot.

This is all from a minor cut, and having a poor diet.

[–]_my_troll_account 13 points14 points ago

their blood being like mayple syrup in terms of viscosity,

Lol. Where did you hear this? I don't mean to offend, but it made me laugh. Their blood sugar levels, although physiologically high, are nowhere near the levels needed to cause a dramatic viscous change like that. What actually happens is that the high sugar levels in the blood lead to thickening of the walls of blood vessels due to a number of sort of complicated things. We're not entirely sure why it happens, but we think that in part, sugar in the blood binds with proteins and these sugar-protein molecules accumulate in blood vessel walls. Thicker walls means thinner lumen, which leads to less blood flow, especially in very small blood vessels like capillaries. Nerves are largely fed by capillaries. Without blood flow, the nerves don't work right, so diabetics can't tell that their feet are injured if they get cut or burned. They don't know they're injured, so they don't properly care for their wounds. Repeated trauma with slowed healing (also due to low blood flow) can lead to necrosis, gangrene, and infections, and eventually the leg needs to be amputated. This is why we advise any diabetic to perform a daily foot inspection for any injuries that need to be properly taken care of.

Additionally, it has little to do with the amount of sugar in their diet, but more to do with a combination of insulin deficiency and insulin resistance. That's more complicated though.

Just for some perspective on this (warning: very amateur, unscientific analysis)

192 grams of sugar are found in 1 cup, or 236 mL of maple syrup. A fasting glucose of 126 mg/dL is diagnostic for diabetes mellitus. Let's make that 300 mg/dL for a very poorly managed diabetic who just ate a big meal.

For maple syrup, 192 g of sugar in 236 mL is equal to 192000 mg of sugar in 2.36 dL. That's a level of 81,355 mg/dL. That's a sugar level almost 300 times higher than a level you would ever expect to see in even the worst-managed diabetic patient.

[–]Vespasianus 1 point2 points ago

You're mistaken. Haven't you ever seen someone with diabetes obtain maple syrup with just a sterile lancet and a lot of pressure?

[–]ilovedrugslol 1 point2 points ago

That is not how diabetes causes amputations.

[–]infinex 7 points8 points ago

That could be something like diabetes, which is strongly linked to obesity.

[–]IPickOnYou 23 points24 points ago

And you KNOW they're on their way to Walmart.

[–]shstmo 1 point2 points ago

Sounds like some self-confidence issues. You don't exercise because you're afraid of what people will think of you because you don't exercise. There has to come a day where you courage-wolf-it-up & say to yourself "enough is enough, haters gon' hate", or you'll never get out of that terrible circular logic.

Why are you worried about what some person you don't know at the gym is thinking? Your body is your business, no theirs. There will always be assholes in this world, you can't change that. You know what you do have control over? Your diet. Your routine. Your sleep habits. You obviously have what it takes to better yourself: Hell, you've lost almost 100lbs once before. Discipline hurts, and it's hard. But you know the rewards it brings. You're more confident, you feel better, you look better, your blood pressure and LDL are a bit lower.

But you know what? It's your choice. You can sit down with a pint of ice cream and Netflix at the end of the night, or you can go try to up your squat numbers. A month from today, you have to decide where you want to be, and WORK for it. Hard. Every single day.

[–]boober_noober 20 points21 points ago

I don't know if it's just me but if I see a fat person biking or walking I actually congratulate them in my head. I judge them in their favor. Good for you.

[–]n3onfx 10 points11 points ago

Same here, seeing a fat person doing sports is a positive thing, you think "that person is taking back control over his life".

On the other hand, seeing obese people buying liters of coke and loads of unhealthy food at the mall induces mostly disgust.

[–]FiendishBeastie 1 point2 points ago

It's not just you - I give them a mental high-five. The dedication and willpower it takes to make that kind of change deserves mad props.

[–]OhSoMexicellent 2 points3 points ago

I mean, I shouldn't have to feel like shit if I want to go for a walk.

Then don't, and go for a walk. I bet you 9/10 people who see you out walking would cheer you on if they could. People love improvement stories, just go over to r/fitness to read the stories. People don't like seeing someone with 10 bags of Doritos in their cart with 2-liters to match.

[–]bldgv8 2 points3 points ago

You're trying to make a change, you shouldn't feel ashamed!

[–]fuckyoubarry 1 point2 points ago

Sometimes people are just regular fat, then they get a fat related injury and the fat piles up while they're stuck in bed or a wheelchair, so after the injury heals they're too fat to get back out. Or maybe the injury never heals and they're a fat disabled person.

[–]Bentheviolin 6 points7 points ago

I feel really sad now. I hate when people make fun and film obese people like this.

[–]SalamanderSylph 1 point2 points ago

I live in London and I have never seen someone so fat that they needed a wheelchair to move. It just so happens that there is a far higher prevalence of these cases who reside in the the USA.

[–]RocketTuna 29 points30 points ago

If you didn't eat les pommes frites, you didn't go to France.

[–]gmorales87 9 points10 points ago

[–]Koin- 6 points7 points ago

Because we all know french fries are from belgium. But don't tell anyone, we like to keep the credit to us.

[–]Yoshi_Girl 3 points4 points ago

That's just something everyone enjoys; paying a decent price for a good sized meal. The PROBLEM is when you eat those meals all the time and then on top of that pair it with a low activity rate. If I wanted to I could afford to buy fast food and eat out all the time, but I don't because it's very unhealthy.

[–]Im_smarter_than_you 1 point2 points ago

I'd much rather get more food and eat it as leftovers.

[–]ahorseinasuit 2 points3 points ago

Although France is catching up with the US on the boombalati front. Their rates have doubled in the last 20 years.
