I love how his ears just automatically adjust themselves as his attention refocuses. How was it evolutionarily advantageous for us to lose that ability again? Or is it just unnecessary, as we clearly outclassed the other apex predators with everything else going for us?

Not too long ago I saw a documentary about how it is slowly becoming a trend in some parts of the US to have little pet monkeys. Only that the owners know nothing about them and treat them like human babies. These monkeys often suffer due to that, start getting aggressive because they want to escape. That's when owners abandon them or slap them.

It's very difficult to offer them a natural habitat in which they'd feel comfortable. I always feel bad when seeing gifs such as this one

Well, it's in what looks like a bathroom sink, so it probably isn't in a zoo or sanctuary. If it's not in a zoo, sanctuary or in the wild but is still being filmed, then it's probably in someone's home, so the scenario Herpaderperper outlines is plausible. It is very sad to see gifs like this.
